Get treated like a VIP with MDVIP

June 12, 2007 by Tricia

If you feel like your doctor doesn’t pay attention to you when you visit him or her, or perhaps your HMO doesn’t let you or your family see a doctor as often as you feel that’s needed you might be interested in looking into MDVIP where they practice something that’s known as Concierge Medicine.

MDVIP is a health care program where the doctors are able to give more focused care to their patients. In fact, the doctors only take on a limited patient load in order to devote more of their time and attention to their current patients.

The focus at MDVIP is preventive medicine. By that I mean the doctors that work with MDVIP provide more detailed and thorough screenings and checkups for their patients in order to catch any illnesses or disorders early or in fact prevent them from occurring in the first case.

Patients are actually given their doctors cell phone or beeper number that they may call day or night if they feel it’s necessary. Now that’s VIP service isn’t it. I’m actually kind of surprised that they offer that level of service!

Now, I live in Canada and we have a great health care system but one of the things we don’t get is such personalized healthcare. That’s one advantage Americans have over us.

If MDVIP sounds like a great health care program you can visit the MDVIP website and learn more about switching over. There’s quite a bit of information on the site including patient testimonials, an FAQ and information about joining the program.

Feeling sucky today

June 12, 2007 by Tricia

I feel like such a whiner these days. It seems that each day that goes by I just feel worse and worse. Yet at the same time I’m so sick of doctors appointments that don’t seem to help.

I think I’ve tried every kind of medication for Crohn’s there is. I’ve tried bland diets, elimination diets, lived on broth and jello … there’s just not much else that I can do.

I could live with some of the symptoms that I have if I could just get the pain level down. Yeah, I’m on pain meds too …

Just thinking about the pain docs I used to work for …

June 12, 2007 by Tricia

When I first started my nursing career I worked with a number of doctors and nurses in a pain clinic. We did nerve block treatments locally and under general anesthesia to relieve peoples chronic pain. It really worked for some of the patients, while for others it only worked until the numbing medications that we used wore off.

Anyway … we had a very strange assortment of doctors. Most were anesthesiologists and had worked in major hospitals in the past but for some reason they now worked in this pain clinic for the most part on a full time basis. I always wondered why there were there since at the time, and I guess currently, we had a major shortage of anesthesiologists in the hospitals.

I often wondered if they’d done something wrong in the hospitals where they had worked before and got fired? Well, I didn’t wonder if that were true for all of them, but some … yeah .. they didn’t really even belong in the pain clinic.

I got thinking about these doctors because I saw this online ad for Dr. Larry Shapiro. It’s for hair transplants in Florida. One of the doctors I worked with was a Dr. Shapiro but as far as I know he never did hair transplants! However, the founder and owner of the clinic did do hair transplants for some time. Can you see how I ended up thinking about the doctors I used to work with at the clinic?

I wonder what happened to them?

I worked there for almost 10 years and I loved my job but it was a horrible place to work. The manager was a true bitch. She took turns picking on different nurses each day of the week. I’m sure it made her day if she could make us cry. Yeah that’s how bad she was. So I don’t have fond memories of the place, even though I really really liked my job.

Did you ever work in a place where one person caused you and perhaps several of your co-workers grief every day?

Sleep, Pain and Caffeine

June 11, 2007 by Tricia

I was just thinking about ways to make myself feel a little bit better and as I said in my last post I think a weeks worth of sleep is really what I need. I don’t sleep well and it’s been proven that people with chronic pain feel worse when they don’t get a proper sleep. There is a definite connection between pain and sleep. So I think the number one thing that I can do for myself that might help this horrible Crohn’s flare is get some sleep. A lot of it!

The other thing that I was thinking of was to change some of the things I drink and eat. Ok, well I can’t change much about what I eat. I can’t eat a lot of solid foods because I don’t digest them well and feel worse after eating … so for the most part – mush it is. Ok no I don’t eat mush … but I probably have a heck of a lot more soft easy to digest foods that most people do. Rice, soup, broths, apple sauce, cottage cheese, yogurt and chicken are the main things that I eat. Yummy huh.

I have noticed that I’ve been drinking a lot of coffee lately. Probably because I’m so chronically tired that I feel the need to get more caffeine in my system to wake myself up. I think I’m going to drink more green tea instead. Perhaps I’ll get some organic matcha. This is one of the best forms of green tea that you can drink. It’s full of antioxidants, and like all green teas it’s caffeine free.

I wouldn’t doubt that I’ll feel a bit better, if not a lot better, if I start getting some good sleep and perhaps stop drinking things with caffeine in them.

Yep, I think I’m going to start doing all of this today. I’m going to finish what I’m currently doing and go to bed. That will be a few hours earlier than it has been normally!

What a great start if I can do it.

Wish me luck!
