Cooking Christmas Dinner This Year

December 24, 2007 by Tricia

Are you cooking Christmas dinner or are you going over to a family or friends home to dine?

I didn’t cook a Christmas dinner last year or maybe even the year before that, but this year I’m going to cook even though there will just be three of us.

Chris is off until Thursday, so earlier today we went out to a grocery store and I bought a fresh turkey, Cranberry jelly, peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, asparagus, stuffing mix, pumpkin pie and plum pudding. Yes, that’s a lot of food, but mmmmm it will be so very good!

I love turkey and if I do say so myself mine usually turns out pretty good. Sure we’ll have leftovers forever but that’s ok. Chris can go back to work with delicious turkey sandwiches.

I’ll probably freeze some of the left over turkey too. Left over turkey is great to have around when you’re making a home made soup, stew or even a stir fry.

What will you do with your left overs … well, if there are any I mean.

Christmas with the in-laws!

December 24, 2007 by Tricia

How is everyone on this lovely Christmas Eve?

We’re having a quite Christmas here this year. I don’t think we’ve celebrated Christmas on Christmas day with Chris’ family in years! It’s always a day or two before Christmas or the following weekend. It seems that no one can manage to get together on Christmas day for some reason.

When my parents were around we had this problem too of course, but we tried to alternate Christmases between the families.

Anyway … Yesterday we went to Brantford to have Christmas with Chris’ parents and his two sisters, their spouses and their kids.

It didn’t quite work out that way though.

Chris’ younger sister had been to Sarnia the night before seeing friends and as they returned home they discovered that their young daughter was very sick so they ended up in a walk in clinic. My niece has strep throat so bad she won’t even drink any liquids! I don’t envy my sister in law at all today!

Chris’ older sister and her husband didn’t make it either! It turned out that she had a cold or the flu and since they are going to Hawaii on Christmas day she wanted to rest and get better before their flight.

So as it turned out it was just Chris and I, Chris’ parents and one of his aunts.

Chris nephew was in the basement with a friend while we were visiting, but for some reason he didn’t want to eat dinner … so that dinner for 12 or 13 people ended up being for only 5!

So that was Christmas with the in-laws.

Oh and I’ve said before that my mother in law can’t really cook … I think she said she cooked the turkey for 10 hours. It was good but it was very dry.

We brought Midnight along for the day so she could meet the family. She was afraid to go in the house when we first go there! I coaxed her in and then we kept her on her leash for a while as we led her around the main floor showing her the house and introducing her to the in-laws. She did pretty good while she was there. No accidents (actually she hasn’t had an accident for close to a week so she might be housetrained!) and she didn’t jump on people too much. Over all I’d say it was a good experience for the puppy. (and us)

Avot mV allows you to watch near real time video on your mobile device

December 21, 2007 by Tricia

Mobile phones that are capable of accessing web based video are becoming more common. I’d say one of the most well known mobile phones would be the iPhone and also the iPod Touch.

Unfortunately, just like in the old days when everyone connected to the internet using slow modems web based video delivered to cell phones can be slow to download and when playing while downloading the video could go through delays or be of poor quality.

I don’t have an iPhone but I do have a mobile phone with web capabilities and I’m excited about the Avot mV video delivery platform that’s been introduced by Avot Media.

Avot mV is apparently the first solution to give mobile users unlimited access to any web-based video. The platform, once installed on your mobile device, will enable you to quickly and easily search, personalize and play videos from all over the internet.

To download Avot mV directly to your mobile phone you can just point your mobile browser to the Avot mV – Product Site. If you are using your computer you can simply visit the Corporate Site to learn more about this innovative program. You’ll also be able to download a copy of Avot mV to your desktop. At that point you’ll need to hook up your mobile device to your computer in order to upload the program to your mobile device.

I’m certain that you’ll enjoy using Avot mV. The platform features intelligent search capabilities that will incorporate your personal preferences which will make searching for videos across the internet easier and faster.

I hate typing in urls or even much text on my cell phone. I bet you do too. One feature of Avot mV that I’m sure you’ll appreciate is that you can simply point and click on videos that you’re interested in instead of having to type in urls. This is of course most beneficial to iPhone users since the iPhone is a true “touch” phone.

Once you’ve found a video that you’d like to watch the Avot mV platform transfers the content to your mobile device in as little as a few seconds. This is much faster than earlier mobile solutions. Since the video is transferred to your mobile so quickly you’ll be able to play the video in near real time and as a result you should not experience grainy video quality, delays or jitter.

You can maximize the size and clarity of the video just like you can when viewing a video on your desktop computer screen.

If you’d like to download videos and then organize them into a playlist that you can watch when you are commuting to and from work or when you are taking a break you can do so with the Avot mV platform. In fact you can create an unlimited number of playlists. I know if I was still taking the subway to and from work each day this feature would definitely be of interested to me!

You can see a list of supported web enabled devices on the Corporate site. Mobile devices such as the Apple iPhone/iPod Touch are supported.

If you are interested in the Avot mV platform visit the website to learn more about it and you can also visit the Avot Media Official Blog to keep up with the Avot mV platform news.

There are some great gift ideas at Greatclubs!

December 17, 2007 by Tricia

Still trying to think of the perfect gift for a loved one? Why not get creative. Think about what your special person enjoys. Perhaps an imported brand of beer? Fine wine? A cigar after a fine meal?

Did you know that greatclubs.com has a number of clubs that offer monthly gifts of top quality products. There are 8 different clubs to choose from and any of them would make a perfect gift for your loved one over the holidays, a birthday or as a special occasion gift.

Of the eight clubs I’m pretty sure my husband would enjoy the beer of the month club the most. Membership can be as little as one month up to 12 months. Members receive a variety of beer from microbreweries from all over the country. Members get a twelve pack of microbrewed beer in 12 ounce bottles. There are four different types of wonderful beers in each twelve pack. Along with the monthly 12 pack members receive Beer Expeditions – the beer of the month club’s monthly newsletter. Beers can be reordered at discount prices too!

Another great club is the wine of the month club. Members receive two delightful wines each month from small award winning wineries. Many of the wines are from international locations. Members may choose to receive all white, all red or a mixture of red and white wines each month.

If someone were getting me a monthly club gift I’d hope to receive a membership in the Chocolate of the month club. Mmmmm delicious! Other clubs at Greatclubs.com include the cigar of the month club, Flower of the month club, Pizza of the month club, Fruit gift of the month club, and the coffee of the month club. The eight clubs are priced between 20.95 to 31.95 per month and as I stated earlier you can try a one month membership or any amount of months up to a 12 month membership. Delivers can be scheduled monthly, every other month or every third month.

If any of these clubs sound like they might make a great gift for someone special in your life you can go to Greatclubs.com to learn more about the particular club that interested you.

She’s not chewsy at all

December 14, 2007 by Tricia

My little chewaholic

Midnight our Lab puppy

Midnight is such a nut when she plays! She loves getting up on the couch with me and while up there she likes to play with one of her toys. Usually it’s a set of Nylabone keys or a squeaky toy, but yesterday it was a green flexible Nylabone bone.

She got right into chewing it.

The funny thing is when she’s really into playing with one of her toys she rolls onto her back, all four legs up in the air, back legs kicking and she’s gnaws on her toy. Rolling back and forth as she sometimes toys the toy up in the air with a flick of her head. She grunts, groans, snorts and makes a lot of funny noises as she does this. She also enjoys kick me or bracing her back legs on me and pushing. When she’s bigger she’ll probably push me right off the couch!

Midnight our Lab puppy

I still haven’t managed to take a really good photo of her when she’s on her back acting like a nut, so the one above will have to do. Look at those sharp pointy teeth that she likes to nip me with when she’s in a frenzy … anything nearby will do!

She’s having a ball trying to chew my leg off here in this photo!

Midnight our Lab puppy

I think she looks like a bit like a bat when she’s lying on her back in a toy induced frenzy. Her pointy ears flop back and look very much like the pointy ears on bats. Naturally I call her bat dog when she’s doing this as well as silly dog, nut dog and a number of other little nicknames.

As you can see from the photos she doesn’t look like a sick dog and she doesn’t act like one either!

I think she’s getting healthier.

The vet called again on Wednesday night and told us that the stool culture didn’t grow any bad bacteria – as in really bad illness causing bacteria. So that was good news. We told him how hyper the worming meds made her on Tuesday and he still thinks we should give her her last dose again next Tuesday. I’ll be giving it first thing in the morning if that’s the case so that maybe she’ll be ready to settle down by late evening. The other night was just crazy!

She’s a good little playful pup even if she does have some health problems. She’s also very motivated by food so that’s made it easy to train her. Not that she’s fully trained for anything yet, but she’s responding fairly well …. well if I don’t count all the pee accidents she had yesterday. I think she ate too much snow when we were out. We had a big storm yesterday and as a result she was a peeing machine! Arghh!

This evening we’ll be going to our first puppy training class at Pets Smart. The first class was actually last Friday, but both she and I were too sick to go. The trainer told us he’d catch us up on what we missed.

I expect she’ll have a ball meeting the other dogs and dog owners. She hasn’t met a lot of other dogs yet as we’ve been protective of her since up until last week she’d only had one set of vaccinations, but she has met a lot of people on our short walks and she’s usually a ball of excitement jumping, squealing and doing those little puppy runs back and forth that are so adorable.

I’ll let you know how puppy training class goes!

If you aren’t sick of puppy pictures yet check out this really cute photo of Midnight on my photoblog. Oh and I almost forgot. She damaged the first of what I expect will be many items before her first year with us is over. I wrote about it in Collateral Damage if you’d like to read that story.
