Sounds in the Night

June 2, 2006 by Tricia

I thought I heard a noise!

I was sitting on my couch last night watching T.V. It was about 11 p.m. and my husband was working an evening shift. Chris wasn’t due back until after midnight.

I thought I heard a noise outside so I turned the T.V. volume down. It was still pleasantly warm outside, so while I had the front door closed, I still had the kitchen window at the back of the house open. I sat there, my muscles tensed, listening carefully.

Then the phone rang.

It was my husband calling from work. I started to tell him that I’d heard a noise but he was in a hurry. He wanted to get one of our friends e-mail addresses for one of the nurses at the hospital. I walked over to the computer and I was looking up the address while I spoke with Chris. As I started to look for the address I thought I heard more noise coming from the front of the house.

The front door knob rattled, then it clicked. I told my husband that someone was at the door. Then the door opened and it was our boarder. He nearly scared me to death and I told him so!

Well, it was actually our former boarder. You see, he packed his bags and moved out yesterday morning. He’d left his big suitcases here because he was going to travel around the province for a few days. He was due to come back sometime today to pick up his bags. That’s why he still had a key. Just in case Chris and I were out when he came back today.

Today. Not Yesterday at 11 p.m.. Today!

He totally took me by surprise and I think he’s lucky I wasn’t sitting there waiting with a gun in hand. We don’t arm ourselves for personal protection here in Canada – not legally anyway. But if I had had a gun, or something worthy of protecting myself with in the house, this would have been the perfect situation since he’d given me some warning sounds first. Now that would have taken him by surprise wouldn’t it?

Tell me folks, if someone has a key to your home but doesn’t live there anymore, and only lived there temporarily in the first place, would you think it wrong of them to just walk in at 11 p.m. at night without at least knocking on the door first to announce themselves?

Hey buddy you don’t live here anymore! You can’t just walk in and scare me half to death.

As you can probably tell from reading some of my posts, our boarder was starting to tick me off in the last few weeks. He came here from Korea to study English so he was away at school all day each weekday. Sometimes he’d come home by 5 p.m. or so but he’d head upstairs and go to sleep. I’d end up delaying our dinner until he woke up or until we managed to wake him up. I shouldn’t have done that, but I did.

Other times he just wouldn’t come home until 8 or 9 or even later, and he wouldn’t call to let me know that he was staying out and that he’d miss dinner or be late for dinner. How am I supposed to prepare a meal for someone when I don’t even know if they are coming home? I found his behaviour rude and disrespectful. The room and board that he paid for included three meals a day, but this isn’t a restaurant.

We have a new boarder moving in on the 10th. She seems like a very nice person. He was too, overall, but as you can see he did some things that I considered quite rude. At least after our experience with our first boarder I know now to have a few more rules, and to set them right from the beginning. I don’t mind if my boarder goes out after school with friends and has some fun. That’s great. All I want is a phone call so that I know whether I have to make dinner for them or not. I think that’s fair.

Anyway. What do you think? Have you ever had someone who happened to still have a key to your house come in unexpectedly and scare you?

Evil Thoughts

May 28, 2006 by Tricia

I’m dragging my feet about posting these days. It’s not that I haven’t had anything to write about, it’s just that a few things have happened this week that made me feel a bit down.

Mostly it was my visit to my family dr. that got me down. She promised me that she was going to get me back on some of my crohn’s meds if I continued to get worse and AGAIN she decided against it and wants to experiment with some herbal mixtures. I can officially say that I’m fed up with every single one of my doctors now. I can’t get better and get back to work if I’m not being cared for properly, and I’m starting to go just a bit stir crazy sitting at home.

Anyway, enough of my grumbling. Since I’ve been feeling more than a little bit evil this week it seemed like the perfect time to take the “How evil Are you” quiz:

You Are 38% Evil

A bit of evil lurks in your heart, but you hide it well.
In some ways, you are the most dangerous kind of evil.
How Evil Are You?

It turns out that I’m not as evil as I thought I was, but looking at the questions and having answered yes to most of the top 4 paragraphs I was starting to think the quiz was going to say I was 80% evil or something.

I found the questions very revealing in some ways.

Yes I do have vengeful feelings. I have broken the law in minor ways in the past, I’ve looked at nudie pics on line – can’t help it when you come across them accidentally can you? That I’ve lingered over a few of them wasn’t asked but to be honest, yes I have.

I’ve wished people harm but I’ve never acted on those feelings. I believe in fate and Karma and the people that have hurt me will probably get theirs eventually. I don’t hate kids or harbor secret desires to be mean just for the fun of it. I would never pick on someone with disabilities.

I do however have a lot of trouble tolerating blatantly stupid people or people who act weak but can and should be doing something for themselves to change the situation they’ve got themselves into.

I already know that I would give my life if I had to in order to save many others. In fact, thanks to SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) hitting Toronto in 2003 and working as a nurse in the midst of this terrible infectious disorder, I knew I was potentially risking my own life by continuing to work in the emergency department. However, if I, and others like me, weren’t working to help stop the spread of SARS it would have infected and killed many more people than it actually did.

I’ve never spit in someones drink, but I must admit that I’ve felt like it. I have blamed a fart or two on other people. Who hasn’t?

I have kissed people that I shouldn’t be kissing, particularly when I was just sweet 16. That is a story for another day though.

How about you? Did you take the “how evil are you test”? Did it make you think about things a little bit when you saw the quiz questions?

Are you a vengeful person? Have you taken revenge on someone? Or would you never dream of having an evil thought or doing something that might be considered mean no matter how deserving a person might be? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Va Va Voom and a way we go!

May 27, 2006 by Tricia

vavavoomheader

As I said recently on my other site I hate this part of the week. I dislike having to say no to so many people who bid to have a spot on my site each week.

I had an amazing 15 bids to choose from today. Just out of curiosity, why do you guys bid on my site? I know it’s not only because of the price. I charge 50 credits but I do work for them by making references to my new renter frequently. Is it because I have half decent stats in my past rentals history? Or because you get permanent links on my site as a bidder and the chosen renter? Just wonderin’.

I had almost decided to pick the new option to accept the first bidder, but I’m a little afraid of that option. I usually like most of the sites that put bids in, but what if the first bidder turned out to be a site I don’t like or that I would have a hard time thinking up things to promote them and get my readers to visit? With the luck I’ve been having this week that’s probably what would have happened.

After much thoughtful deliberation I’ve decided to go with Va Va Voom as my renter this week. I’ve admired her site since I first came across it. I love her writing style, and it turns out that she’s a wonderful artist. All the graphic images on her site have been created by Ms. Va Va Voom herself.

She’s recently discovered that she has a fascination with Big Butts. You should visit her and find out how she came across this recent discovery about herself. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed when you visit her site. It’s lovely to look at and use and her writing style keeps you entertained and interested in reading more.

Amazing site!

I’d really appreciate it if my visitors would take some time to visit a few of the sites that put bids in this week.:

Thai Curry Stir Fry

May 25, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things about Tonights Dinner

1…. This is such a fantastic dinner I thought I’d give you the recipe.

2…. Start with 1/2 lb boneless skinless chicken breast cut up into small pieces.

3…. Add 1 tbsp Canola oil to a large pan or wok, heat on low until oil is hot and then add the chicken to the pan, stirring occasionally until the meat looks cooked.

4…. Add one can of Thai Green Curry sauce. Most grocery stores seem to carry this these days, just look in the aisle where rice is sold, or where products to make Chinese, Mexican and Indian foods are sold.

5…. The Thai curry sauce is hot, so I often add a half can of Coconut milk to it to tone it down. Works beautifully.

6…. Once the sauce, coconut milk and chicken has simmered on low for 5 minutes I add the rest of the ingredients.

7…. I was lazy this evening. I added two cups of frozen veggies consisting of cauliflower, carrot, broccoli. I also had some pre-chopped frozen peppers and zucchini in the freezer that I added to the mix.

8…. 1 can of sliced water chestnuts

9…. 1 cup snow peas (you know the green pea shells)

10…. Let this mix simmer for another 15 minutes on low heat.

11…. While the above ingredients were cooking I got out another pot and heated water in it. I then added a package of Rice Vermicelli noodles to the water and let the noodles sit in the warm water for 5 minutes to soften up.

12…. When the Thai curry stir fry looks and smells (mmmmm) done (approximately 20 to 25 minutes from the start of cooking) toss in the vermacelli noodles and serve. This curry can also be served over a bed of rice, which is the way we usually have it.

13…. Now I just need someone to feed. It’s almost 8 p.m. and our border hasn’t come home yet. He hasn’t even called to say he would be late. I’m ticked because he does this all the time. I think it’s just rude and disrespectful. Don’t you? My husband won’t be home until after 10 p.m. because he’s working an evening shift. He can, and will, enjoy the meal when he comes home.

Well, maybe my roomie Noi will enjoy this meal with me. She has her own Thursday Thirteen up now too, so go see her!

Cold as Ice

May 22, 2006 by Tricia

I just heard the ice cream truck go by blaring it’s loud monkey circus music, well that’s what it reminds me of anyway. I think the guy must be high on something. It’s freezing here! 9 C or for those on the other side of the border that’s 48.2 F. Yep, I want an ice-cream when it’s this cold. Not! Brrrr!

I’ve been freezing all weekend. I’ve been hanging out in an ice hockey arena though so that’s probably why. Chris’ brother came up from Chicago with his youngest son for a spring hockey tournament, so I’ve been hanging out and partying with a bunch of Americans all weekend.

Considering how cold it’s been here I should have gone to Florida and hung out at Mr. Dribble uh Drivels Fabulous Karaoke party. Sounds like it was a blast and heck it’s warm there!

Why would they hold a tournament on our long weekend? Don’t they know this is the big camping weekend in Canada? The May 24? Victoria Day? Did my nephew’s Pee Wee team win the tournament? No. He did play very well though, scored almost all the goals for his team, but then he’s half Canadian so it’s in his blood.

Friday night we staying in a hotel that’s attached to the airport. I have no idea why it’s important to tell you that the hotel was attached to the airport but I did, so whatever. It was surprisingly quiet considering … well our room wasn’t, but the hotel with all the air traffic flying overhead was.

We shared a room with Chris’ brother T and kept the people on either side of our room awake all night. Sorry to anyone that was next door to us … and oh, thank you for your very polite note of complaint. I can’t believe someone would write such a polite note, and compliment my husband on his guitar playing, even though this poor person had to get up early to work. I did try to get the guys to settle down a bit around 3 a.m. but they weren’t listening to me. We finally crashed around 5:30 a.m.

My nephews second game of the tournament was at 8:30 a.m. T and I didn’t make it … we just couldn’t get up, but my husband managed to go and watch them lose. It seems that my nephew only won the games I watched – Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. I guess I should have gone to Sunday’s game huh? Maybe they would have won the tournament.

All the in-laws were staying in the hotel too. By late Saturday night I’d had enough and wanted to go home to sleep in my own bed. Besides, T out did himself Friday night and early Saturday morning. He fell asleep in the van after his son’s second game on Saturday while we were traveling to this wonderful steak house that he really wanted to eat at. He’d been longing for a big juicy steak. We ended up leaving him in the van while we went in to eat the delicious food. We did get him something to eat, we aren’t that cruel, but after he ate he fell asleep again on the floor in his parents hotel room. Did I say he’d been drinking all day without eating anything up until the time we got back to the hotel? No, well he was. That’s when Chris and I decided to leave. We were afraid that if T did wake up he’d want to party again and while that might be fun he did have to drive all the way back to Chicago the next day after his son’s last game.

Sunday was another brief out-law day, and then home to relax in my own house. The out-laws are just nuts. I’ll tell you about them some time, probably when they do something stupid meaning it won’t be in the too far distant future.

If I ever warm up we might go and watch the fireworks this evening. There’s usually a spectacular display at Ontario place or Ashbridges Bay on Victoria day. Or I suppose we could take our chances and walk to the park down the street. There are always some fools out their with their own fireworks. Of course you have to be alert when you’re watching amature fireworks displays because they go off sideways and usually directly into the crowd as often as they go up in the air.

Maybe we will do the park thing. Running around avoiding misfired fire works is not only good exercise but it will also keep me warm.
