It’s all about ME

July 3, 2006 by Tricia

Now you've done it Well now someones gone and done it. They’ve blown my record. Tsk tsk.

I’ve been writing in this blog for just over 5 months. Somehow it seems longer, but it really has been only a short time since this site came into existence.

I’ve had 1175 comments. I’m amazed at how many people have taken the time to stop and comment on the latest post, or on the site in general. Thank you for taking the time to read, and to let me know that you’ve been reading by leaving a comment.

The 1176th comment is however quite different from all the rest. It’s the first “bad” comment:

“*snore*
do you really think anyone cares to read a blow by blow of your medical experiences? get a life.” signed Bored.

I’m laughing! If you’re so bored “Bored”, why did you even bother to write a comment? You obviously took the time to scroll down the page in order to read Steamrolled, or you were visiting from the Carnival of Blogging Chicks. Either way, I’m not really bothered by your comment, just mystified that you took the time to write something if the post was so dull. When I’m bored I just move on and perhaps visit again later to see if the next post is more interesting.

Just to clarify though, I do have a life. It’s just kind of on hold, or at the very least moving in slow motion right now because I do have medical problems. Unfortunately for “Bored” a person with medical problems will occasionally write about their medical experiences, as dull as that may be.

In case my cartoon header didn’t spell it out for you “Bored”, I’m a nurse. See the nursing cap and the stethoscope up there on the table? When I do get back to work in the Emergency department I’m pretty sure that there will be times that I will be writing (as confidentially as possible) about other peoples medical experiences. I’m sure there will be days that I come home and write about the patient whom I comforted as they died; a child who stuck a toy figurine up his or her nose; a patients angry or crazy relatives; or the latest shooting victim. The tone and content of this site might change when I have “more of a life”. For some it will be more interesting, for others perhaps not their cup of tea. Only time will tell.

If I was feeling healthy, and was back to work, there’s a good chance that this blog would never have started. But I’m off work at the moment, and I’ve got some spare time on my hands, and well, since I’m ill I need to keep my mind occupied so I don’t dwell on my situation and how bad I’m feeling. So I write.

I actually started this site with the full intention of writing about Crohns disease and how it was affecting my life, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. It’s too depressing to talk about and I’m trying to stay as up beat as I can so I write about anything and everything that pops into my head or that I encounter in my day to day goings on.

I’ve found that over the years with this illness that if I stay busy and keep my mind occupied the pain doesn’t get to me as much as it does when I’m just sitting around not doing much of anything. Writing on this site, my 4 other blogs, and my two huge websites, as well as helping all of the people that write to me about their sick pets keeps me pretty busy. I think it would keep anyone busy! It’s also therapeutic.

I don’t write on this site to entertain people. I write what I want to write, and I do it for me. I’m not going to lie, I know people are reading my site so I try to write in an interesting way, and try to amuse at times, but the main person I’m writing for is ME. I love the comments and the feedback that I get from the people who read this site, and I’d hate it if I suddenly wasn’t getting any comments, but I’d still write.

As for the post that “Bored” took the time to comment on, well that was all about me, but in a way it wasn’t written just for me. I wrote that out so that others would know that sometimes common tests that are performed thousands of times can go bad and that complications can develop afterwards. The medical tests are important and they could save your life, but things don’t always go smoothly. I was in a potentially life threatening situation – it could have been a bowel perforation that I suffered from after the tests, instead it was a bowel obstruction. Both are very serious. Luckily I’m getting better and finally starting to feel more like myself.

One other thing before I step off my tiny soapbox (and probably fall!). I talked about my cartoon header earlier. I’ve been reading on some sites that people “hate” blogs with cartoon headers and some even go as far to say they won’t read them, or vote for them in battles etc. I’m sure those people haven’t read this far so perhaps my point is falling on deaf ears, but I just want to say that it’s very unlikely that my header will ever contain a picture of me.

I use a ‘toon to represent me in order to protect my privacy and that of my husbands. I work in a huge hospital yet I know almost everyone that works there. Regular patients also know me and would recognize me if they saw my picture on a blog. While I’m not totally hiding my identity I really don’t want to make it easy for someone to connect this site with me.

My ‘toon reflects my life – nursing, plants/gardening, music (that’s my husband and my stalker neighbor in the photo), and my work in herpetoculture (see the iguana on the couch?). I don’t really look like the cartoon me – but I do have auburn hair – cut short and layered, I’m tall, have long legs, hazel eyes – on which I wear contacts or sometimes glasses, I’m on the slim side right now due to my illness, and I’m very lucky that I take after my parents and my siblings and look younger than my age. My nose is a little bigger than hers though. I likely wouldn’t dress quite as she is dressed, but the way she’s standing kind of reflects my klutzy nature. LOL

So I’m sorry if you don’t like cartoon headers, but as you can see I did that for several reasons and I tried to make my ‘toon reflect my life and looks as much as I could. All she needs is either a garden trowel or a syringe in her hand and she’d be just about perfect.

Ha ha, all this for one bad comment that really didn’t bother me. Really. I just thought that given this comment perhaps my readers should know a little bit more about me and this blog.

I finally got ’em:

No wonder that monkey on my back was so heavy! There were two of them.

Oh La La Friday

June 23, 2006 by Tricia

Oh La La Friday

Oh My, I started a new meme! Want to join me?The official home of Oh La La Friday is on my other site Odd Planet. Please visit Odd Planet for instructions on how to play and how to get your site listed on the Oh La La bl0groll.

It’s simple really. Just post a picture on Friday of something that makes you say “Oh La La”. In other words, something that makes you drool, something delicious, delightful, gorgeous, daring … You get the picture? No pornography though.

If you want to participate send me an e-mail or leave a comment at Odd Planet and I’ll send you the blogroll code and add you to the roll when you have posted the roll on your site. Participants must play at least once a month to remain on the roll.

Fridays may not be the best day for this meme. If you want to participate but don’t want it to be on a Friday please let me know. The other day I was thinking of was perhaps Tuesday. What do you think?

I’m also starting another meme over at As the Garden Grows called Greenthumb Sunday. It will be for gardeners, house plant enthusiasts, and nature lovers. Participants can post pictures of the plants they grow or lovely nature scenes and landscapes. If you want to get in on that meme head on over to As the Garden Grows.

Now, without further ado, here is my first Oh La La Friday entry:

Just Joey Rose

Leave a link and a comment if you are participating in Oh La La Friday. Thanks!

That monster bite me!

June 19, 2006 by Tricia

I’ve been mauled!

I haven’t been around for the last few days because I needed to get some work done in my very neglected garden. Naturally I decided to garden during a heat wave! Boy am I smart or what?

So I go out into my backyard to give all my plants some much needed love and attention and what do they do to me? They attacked me! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you! Literally.

The ringer leader was this thug of a rose called Antique 89. Some name on that girl huh? I think I’ll just call her monster from now on. I thought I could take her. Yeah, she’s seven feet tall, only a little more than a foot taller than me, but I’m smarter, or at least I thought I was when the battle began.

I chose to wrestle with the monster first because the wind had started to blow her over and she really needed to be straightened out. Turns out I was the one that got a straightening out. She was heavier than I expected and I ended up half underneath her before I knew what was happened.

That’s when the screaming started. She sank her gigantic thorns into my back, into my arms, hands and legs. The more I moved the more entangled I got. There was no winning this battle, or so I thought.

Some time during the eternity that I was fighting with this mother of a rose our boarder came outside looking for me. She didn’t find me. Hello? Roses don’t scream! That was me under neath that huge green thing in the corner that was making all the noise.

I finally shoved a few stakes in beside her thick stems and got untagged from her thorny branches. She was still leaning heavily on me and I’m sure blood was dripping on the ground below her leafy bows. I think I tired her out. I used my trusty garden tape to tie her to the stakes that I had surrounded her with so that she couldn’t harm anyone else.

Just then my husband came outside and said “Oh, I thought you were going to call me if you needed help?” He obviously didn’t hear my screams and the subsequent sobbing that occurred.

I went on to battle several other roses over the weekend and won those fights easily. Oh yes, they bit me, but after tangling with the monster I barely felt their thorns.

You see, my arms are on fire. My battle with the thorny monster was on Friday and still my arms are burning. I have at least 50 scratches from the tips of my fingers to just above my elbows on each arm. I look like I’ve been attacked by ten cats. I was wearing pants when I was struggling with the rose but she still managed to scratch up my legs pretty good. I’ll have to take a better look at those pants and see if there are holes in them now.

I’m going to have to stay on top of this gardening situation from now on, especially where Antique 89 is concerned. She’s tasted my blood, now there will be no stopping her if she’s given a small chance. Nope! I’m either going to have to cage her up to keep her from taking other victims or I’ll have to battle her wearing armor. Now isn’t that pretty picture? Particularly if it’s 100 F out! Whew!

And how was your weekend?

It’s been a busy week

June 15, 2006 by Tricia

Thirteen Things about About this past week

1…. I discovered that an old friend of mine was reading this site and I was thrilled when she decided to contact me. Hi Lisa!

2…. I was also happy that we seem to still be on the same wavelength, and that there are some similarities in what is going on in each of our lives right now.

3…. Lisa contacting me, caused me to get in touch with another friend that I haven’t spoken with for a few months. So it’s been an “old friends” sort of week.

4…. Our new boarder moved in on Saturday, or rather we picked her up from the home that she’d been staying in and helped her move in.

5…. Her former “Homestay Parents” told us she was very demanding and that she was a “princess”. So Chris promptly nicknamed her princess after she’d been here for a few hours.

6…. It turns out that our new boarder is a little demanding but I think we can handle it. She kind of follows me around the house when she comes home from school. However she does offer to help with dinner and sometimes clears the dishes off the table when we’ve finished eating and I do appreciate her doing this occasionally.

7…. The boarder only made me mad on Sunday. We were supposed to be going to Chris sisters when he got off work late Sunday afternoon and we’d told our boarder about our little trip. She said that she would be going out and meeting with friends at a Jazz festival. I asked her if she’d be eating out and she said yes. So great- no one would be home for dinner since we’d all be out. Sunday arrived and she went out to meet some friends in the afternoon but not before informing me that she wanted dinner at 5 pm before she was going to go out with her friends for the evening. Huh? We won’t be home at 5? I ended up making her a dinner and then Chris and I left to go to Waterloo. That will not happen again. So far that’s been the only incident that upset me. Everything else has been pretty good.

8…. Sunday was Chris’ nieces’ first communion. We couldn’t make the ceremony but we showed up at his sisters for the party in the evening.

9…. The party ended up being in and around the hot tub! Unfortunately Chris had forgotten to remind me to bring a bathing suit so I didn’t go in.

10…. Chris did though and he pretty much spent the whole evening soaking in the hot tub. Now he wants us to get one. hmmm where in our tiny backyard shall we put it?

11…. Actually I do have an idea on where we might put a hot tub if we ever got one. We have an enclosed back porch (Florida Room) and it has a very large storage area underneath it. My thoughts are that we should dig down into the cement storage area and sink a hot tub partially under the Florida room. If we dug deep enough we could even put in an entrance to the basement. This would be great in the winter as we could get right into the tub by entering through the basement rather than trudging around the backyard in the snow. I think I like this idea.

12…. The rest of the week has been spent working on my two new sites and moving this one over to it’s brand new domain.

13…. Chris saw the sleep doctor today to get the results of his sleep study. Just as I thought he has sleep apnea. Severe sleep apnea according to the doctor. Now he might need to wear one of those special breath masks when he sleeps, or have some surgery on his throat and sinus’ to see if it helps. We’ll see what happens. Last Thursday I had my appt with the sleep study doctor and found out that I have skipped heart beats when I’m sleeping. So I guess the two of us have some sleep problems after all.

It’s Pointless!

June 4, 2006 by Tricia

I truly believe you guys are trying to drive me mad.  Do you know how much I stress over choosing a renter?  Every time I put my site up for rent I wait until the middle of the night before I torture myself with making a decision.  Of course, since I usually wait until at least 12 hours have passed from the time I started the rental offer I seem to end up with 10 + bidders each time. That makes it even harder. What makes it really bad is that I currently have two sites that I put up for rent so I put myself through this twice a week! Arggh.

15 bidder this time round!

I took my time rating each site that had made a bid, but when I saw Pointless Drivel I think I knew that I would ultimately pick the fabulous Mr. Fab to be my roomie this week.  Now lately, when faced with an overwhelming amount of bidders I’ve either chosen the site that bid first or whichever site appeared to be younger than the rest or in need of some promotion.  If I had done that this time round I certainly would have picked Evolution of Gina as it is the youngest site.  Gina and all the rest, please forgive me and bid again. I just had to go with one of my fav’s this week.  Sorry!

Pointless Drivel has quickly become one of my favorite sites to visit daily.  Why? Well because you just never know what the heck Mr. Fab might be talking about that day and you just have to know, that’s why.

His audio posts reading out his dramatic versions of popular songs are hilarious. As are his posts about his fascination with lemurs and by-products of lemurs, virtual sisters, co-workers, outings with his wife.  You name it, whatever is happening Mr. Fab has something interesting to say.  I won’t even go into his posts about his body parts (nipples for one!) or the ones about being a metro-sexual.  You’ll just have to find them and have a good laugh when you do.

Now to spread some love, if you have the time, after you’ve visited my newly chosen renter of course, why don’t you take some time and visit these wonderful sites:

Luka’s Incogbl0go – A personal site about the owners day to day life. One of the things that I like best about this site- other than the owner herself who seems to be a very nice person – is that she opens up her site to others on the last Friday of every month so that people can come on and write guest posts.  It’s a fantastic idea.

Modern Princess – A well written site that contains stories about the owners family life, kids, general observations and some absolutely fantastic sounding recipes.  Her latest post is a recipe for stuffed and roasted strawberries that sounds wonderful.  Oh they have chocolate in them, even better. Yum!

Adventures in Cyberia – Interesting site! The creator has built this site by creating alter egos of real life bl0ggers using sims2. It’s like a soap opera or day time drama.  Check it out.

Scooter McGavin’s 9th Green – Scooters currently renting on my other site Odd Planet right now. If I didn’t choose him for that site this week I probably would have picked him to rent here this time around.  He’s a persistent guy! Bids just about every time I tell ya. He does discuss popular television shows, Movies and new music on his site. He’s currently rating the best of Prince. I must admit that I think Prince is a talented artist so this was an interesting read for me.

Backyardigans Fan – Well, I have to admit, as a person without children, I had no idea what the backyardigans were until I looked at this site. If you are a parent with young children who enjoy the backyardigans or if you are a fan yourself then this site is for you as it’s everything backyardigan.

Utenzi – This popular site has great writing. Utenzi talks about life, day to day goings on, discusses products, software, movies – well a whole variety of things! It also appears that he’s a kayaker, which is something I’ve never tried, but since I love canoeing and whitewater rafting too he must be a good guy. He does wonderful write ups on his renters and some of his bidders too.  Seems like an all round great person and his site is a worthy read.

Green – Great site.  I’m still trying to figure out why it’s called green? She also has one called Purple. I enjoyed her recent rant post about people rubbernecking and gawping.  Yes that’s a word.  Go see!

Meltwater. Torrents. Meanderings. Delta. – For a guy who’s just injured himself badly and ended up separating his shoulder he’s sure pumping out the posts this week.  Must take him forever, but he’s doing it. Matt’s latest post is a beautiful photograph that you just have to see.  It’s breath taking. Matt’s site is another one that I read regularly. He writes on a wide range of topics from humor to nature, to observations about society. Always a good read.

Useless Advice from Useless Men – The useless men are at it again.  You have to visit this site. People write to them, asking them a question that they long for an answer to and the useless men give their advice, often with hilarious results. I love visiting this site as it always makes me laugh.

Just Jill – This site is new to me, although it appears to have been around for a while. I really enjoyed one of her recent posts where she talked about who she was 10 years ago and the changes that have taken place in life since that time. This site is worth keeping an eye on.

Long, Slow, Beautiful Dance – I like this site.  The posts are fresh and interesting. Laci was in a car accident earlier this week and now she’s lamenting about the joys of living without a car while hers is in the shop being fixed. Take a peek.

Evolution of Gina – This appears to be a brand new site started near the end of May. I’ve never seen Gina’s site before but I’m pretty sure that I’ll be going back for a visit now and then.  She’s living in a small town and making her way in life. She’s written a few poems and talks about her life and the people in it and of course discusses some of the joys of living in a small town.  Check it out.

The Invisible Bl0gger – This site is fairly new to me but it’s quickly gaining my attention.  I enjoy the writing style. This southern lady seems honest and puts herself out there for others to see who she really is.  She has a wonderful post about being from the south and it made me laugh. I think you’ll enjoy it too.

Dr. Wickidy – An entertaining site about the adventures of Dr. Wickidy in his wacky world. Each post is another adventure in the on going story of Dr. Wickidy.  Readers get to participate by voting on what might happen next. It’s a fun site that should make you laugh.
