One of my favorite Spring flowers

We still have about a month to go before Spring will finally be here, and given the weather we’ve had the last two days it might feel like a long wait! With the windchill factored in it’s currently -16 Celsius or only 3.2 F! Brrrr

Since Spring will soon be here and I’m trying my best to ignore the cold I thought I’d show you one of my favorite spring flowers. Now I think most people think of tulips when they think of Spring. I do too, but for me … Peonies are probably my favorite Spring flowers! Too bad I have to wait until late Spring -almost summer before mine will bloom!

Here’s a lovely almost white Peony called Peony Pecher:

This peony produces large double petaled blooms each June. They are just a little smaller than a bread plate oh and the smell … they have that lovely light peony scent. I just adore these flowers!

Last year I planted three new peony plants in my garden. One is in the front flower bed and two are in my planted boulevard – so if they survived the winter I’ll have 6 peony plants in total! Hopefully I’ll also have an abundance of flowers!

Do you grow Peonies?

Grilling in my kitchen

February 27, 2009 by Tricia

Earlier this evening, when Chris came home from work, I suggested to Chris that we get a Foreman Grill. I’d got a notice from a department store in our area that the G 2 EZ Broil grill was on sale.

We’ve been eating a lot of boneless Skinless chicken breasts lately and I’ve been getting kind of tired of baking them in the oven so I thought the grill might be a great addition to our kitchen appliances and I was fairly certain that I’d use it just about every day.

So when Chris got home from work I told him about the grill. I’d also looked up some reviews on that particular model to see how others liked it and it had good reviews, so we went out to the store to get one. We also stopped by a grocery store to pick up some salad making supplies and some hamburgers.

After getting the new grill out of the box and setting it up we grilled two hamburgers on it. man is that thing fast! Only five minutes and our burgers were done. Yummy!

Along with our hamburgers in Pita buns we had steamed veggies (carrots, broccoli and cauliflower) and I made a salad with baby mixed greens, grape tomatoes (none of the regular sized tomatoes were ripe enough in the store), cucumber, green pepper and a little feta cheese. We haven’t actually had a salad with our meals for quite a while so it was a very nice addition. Plus I made us each a big salad so it was filling too.

I already have some thawed chicken breasts in the fridge, so tomorrow we’ll have grilled chicken. Sunday perhaps we’ll have some of the Sole Fillets I bought last weekend. Hopefully everything cooks nicely on the grill!

Now if only I’d remembered to look for compact flash cards while we were in the store earlier I’d be set. I need a new one for my camera. Oh well … we still have the rest of the weekend.

A lovely day for a walk

February 26, 2009 by Tricia

Midnight, my Labrador Retriever, and I took advantage of the nice weather earlier today and took a long long walk.

We were supposed to have a warmer than normal day that was filled with snow, rain and then showers, but to my surprise we didn’t get the bad weather – only the nice warmer than average temperatures. Not that 6 Celsius (42 F) is all that warm, but for February, especially after a very cold January, it sure felt nice … Spring-like even.

Midnight in kitchen

I haven’t been walking Midnight as often as I should since I haven’t been feeling all that well the last several months. Oh, Chris walks her – usually twice a day, but if I can walk her at least once a day as well all the better for her. It makes our evenings much more peaceful if we have a well exercised and tired dog!

For my own sake I should be out walking her every day as well! It’s good exercise and Midnight tends to pull on the leash (although she’s getting a little better and not dragging us around as much lately) so it’s a fast paced walk if I want to keep up with her!

We walked for 45 minutes this afternoon and then when Chris came home from work we all took another 35 minute walk.

Midnights still up and begging for a rawhide chew, but I expect that she’ll be tired out and want to sleep soon …

don't bug me I'm sleeping

I took this photo a few weeks ago when Midnight was napping on her favorite chair … I don’t think she liked being woken up to a camera in her face.

So … fellow dog owners, do you walk your dog several times a day or have a yard that your dog can get burn some of it’s excess energy off in?

The snow is back

We’ve had such nice weather for most of February.

It warmed up to above seasonal temperatures for several days making it seem very spring like and all the snow that we had melted away. Unfortunately that’s over now … it’s snowing like crazy this weekend so all we’ll see for a while is white when we look outdoors.

I think for today I’ll remember how nice and warm summer is by enjoying this lovely Cactus Dahlia:

Flowers all year round indoors and out

Some how this year I’ve managed to have flowers almost continuously, by this I mean I’ve had flowers either in my yard or in my house since last spring!

At the moment my kitchen is the bloom factory. If you’re a neat freak you wouldn’t like the look of our kitchen table as it has at least 10 plants on it, but at least that only happens in the winter. During the warmer months most of my plants go outdoors or onto our enclosed porches.

We have two types of Orchids blooming (another just finished it’s flowering), a small hibiscus that puts out one or two flowers every few days, one Amaryllis that just finished blooming and when my husband was in the hospital the nurses that cared for him gave him an African Violet plant – in bloom.

Our Thanksgiving and Christmas Cactus’ keep putting out the occasional bloom as well … so as I said we’ve had flowers surrounding us for a year now! That’s a first.

The Orchids are just lovely right now.

Purple Orchid 5

This purple one is one of my favorites. I love it’s intricate pattern. I almost looks like a butterfly to me.

These white Orchids are new. I bought the plant in the first week of January and it’s still blooming!

White Orchids 18

I love how the flowers all line up in a delicate row like that.

Oh … here’s a shot of my messy plant covered table … the plant with the weird spider like things is an orchid that’s producing babies. Those spider leg like things are air roots and the green leaves are new plants growing high above the base of the main plant.

Do you have any flowers blooming in your house right now? Even some store bought Valentine flowers?
