Did I ever tell you how Chris and I met?

November 12, 2006 by Tricia

Well in an earlier post I told you about my alter life as a Reptile guru, and now I’m going to reveal yet another alter life! Yes, I am a woman of many interests, talents?, and careers.

When I first moved to Toronto I had come to go to Sheridan College to take a course in Special effects make up as I had decided I wanted to work in the film industry as a make up artist. Unfortunately I found out two weeks before the course was to begin that they had overfilled the slots and I would have to wait until the next course began.

I was crushed. I’d left my hometown to move the big scary city of Toronto to go to college and in the end I couldn’t get in. What a disappointment.

I was living with my sister at the time and she worked in the jewelery trade. So, while I had initially been working in the same company as my brother – it’s nice to have connections isn’t it?- my sister was pulling strings to get me a job in a new jewelery manufacturing company. I got the job and I had the most gorgeous Armenian boss. I eventually moved up to manage the company and all his girlfriends for him. The only real bonus was that I often got a drive home in his Porsche for my efforts.

Actually, I learned a lot while I worked for Arthur – from wax molding, to casting, to being able to manage 13 chauvinistic European male jewelers. No, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think all European men are like that- it’s just these men were master jewelers and suddenly an 18 year old Canadian girl is there boss? They gave me a hard time but I stood up to them and gained their respect in the end.

I learned enough from my former boss to eventually start my own business as a Diamond cutter. No I didn’t cut diamonds- I cut designs in gold with a hand held diamond flywheel and a massive diamond cutting machine that spun at 35,000 rotations per second. That machine scared me!

The majority of my work was wedding jewelry. I did a lot of the beaded millwork you see on the edges of wedding bands, or the bright straight cut along the edges of rings, ladies and mens wedding rings and bangles. I also cut the bright star shape that you often see smaller diamonds set into on wedding bands or signet rings. That type of design can be done with engraving tools but it’s not as bright as when it’s cut with a diamond.

My sister and I had an office together when I had my business. She had about 200 customers a day come in to see her as she was a very fast, very popular engraver. Why am I saying was? She still is an engraver. Unbeknownst to me, a young guy would visit my sister but he had his eye on me. This guy turned out to be Chris – my husband.

Yes, Chris was a jeweller as well. Eventually he worked up the guts to talk to me when I was out with some other jeweller friends – uh drinking at a bar across the street if you must know.

From the moment we started talking we both knew we would eventually marry. In fact I think we even talked about how things might be when we got married on our first date. It was true love.

Unfortunately Chris was nervous about the proposal , and he didn’t even end up asking me until we’d been together for five years. Yes, he kept me waiting even though we knew from day one we’d get married. What a silly guy, eh?

He proposed to me at a New Years party we were hosting. He’d told one of our friends that he was going to propose but then got nervous. I had a feeling he was going to propose as well and I was getting upset that he hadn’t asked yet. Our friend eventually grabbed us both by the hands and dragged us into our bedroom and then shut the door on us. He finally asked after we had some privacy. LOL

Now, I don’t know if you know this but it’s very bad luck for jewelers to make their own wedding bands. Luckily, Chris’ old roommate from his college days had become a jeweller as well – and had married Chris’ sister – so as a wedding present for the two of us he hand crafted our bands.

My band is about 10mm wide, and it’s concave. It has hand carved grape leaves and vines entwined around the whole band, with alternating diamonds and emeralds encircling the whole band. Emeralds are very delicate creatures so I do not wear my band all the time. Chris’ band is convex, crafted with yellow gold with a strip of platinum in the center encircling the whole band. He’s got big fingers so I personally think the band looks like a very fancy napkin ring, but that’s just me. Both bands are lovely.

As you can see I’ve had a few different career paths in my life plus some bumps along the road that aimed me in a different direction than the one I was headed. I’m glad those things happened though, because if I had gone to school to be come a special effects artist I probably wouldn’t have met Chris and that just wouldn’t be right.

My other life

November 12, 2006 by Tricia

I don’t know how many of my readers realize that I have an alter life – well maybe you might call it an alter lifestyle choice? I’m a massive pet lover or rather animal lover but unfortunately, as I mentioned in a recent post I’m allergic to dogs, cats, birds, horses and other types of farm animals. I guess anything with hair and dander really. My allergies actually ended up altering my education plans because, since I was a little girl, I had always wanted to become a veterinarian. Being a nurse is not quite the same, but I suppose that satisfies the nurturer in me.

Anyway- my alter life. Some of you know that I am a reptile lover. Yeah yeah, I know most of you aren’t, but I am and it’s not just because of my allergies. I’ve always been fascinated by reptiles and amphibians.

I was lucky as a child, we had a beautiful cottage on old family land. It had a creek close by where I could find dozens of frogs, salamanders, snakes and turtles. Even better, there was also an old rock quarry close to our cottage area too, and I’d visit that area regularly in June to see the turtles laying their eggs in the sandy ground, or to try to find the babies marching steadily towards the water.

I wasn’t given permission to have any type of pet at home when I was growing up, so as soon as I moved to Toronto and got my own apartment I got my first turtles. I was happy with the turtles for many years but I was starting to develop a strong interest in lizards. I spent several months doing research on what type of lizard would be best for me and I ended up- with my husband by that time- getting two Chinese Water Dragons.

At the time it was difficult to gather much information of true value on the internet and most of the books were outdated. This was 1995 By the way. I realized that with all of my research I had more information gathered in my notebooks and in various emails that I’d kept than was on any website on the internet. So I decided to start my own website and a mailing list for water dragon owners in December 1995.

Over the years I’ve become quite well known for my gigantic website on not just water dragon care, but the care of over 100 commonly kept reptiles. I even wrote an article in an annual reptile magazine this year. Even veterinarians contact me for my pet care information regarding iguanas and water dragons in particular.

I’ve cared for 6 Chinese water dragons, 4 geckos, 3 box turtles, two red eared sliders, two painted turtles, and 1 very large male iguana in the time that I’ve owned reptiles as pets. Right now I only have my adopted box turtles.

Most of the pets that I’ve kept were previously owned and had health problems, and due to my nursing knowledge I was able to develop my skills in special needs pet care. One of my dragons had leukemia, and another had fallen and had paralyzed her bowel function, and believe it or not I helped her pass waste, hydrated her with subcutaneous injections and kept her alive and happy for three years after her accident.

Our iguana came to us as a very sickly animal. He was the size of a one year old iguana but he was three or four years old- stunted, under weight, rock hard dry skin, both ear drums pierced, scabs on his body and dry gangrene in his toes and the end of his tail and he had these tiny little bugs crawling all over them. The pet store that gave him to us though they were fleas at first and tried to sell us flea medications, but flea medications would have killed him. They were just red mites. Some good soaks in the bath and constant cleaning of his very bare initial cage rid him of the mites quickly. Unfortunately it took us at least 6 months of caring for him two or three hours a day to get him healthy and tame.

Our iguanas name was Napoleon. He died in July 2004 and he took a piece of my heart with him. You might not think of a reptile being cuddly or friendly, but he was the sweetest friendliest animal I think I’ve ever met and he adored me as much as I loved him.

He’d follow me around the house when we’d let him, come over and climb into my lap when invited, and literally hug you back when you picked him up in your arms. He was 13 years old when he died and as sad as I am that he’s gone, I know he lived much longer than he would have if we’d never rescued him. Actually even after we rescued him we only hoped he’d live for three or four years – he was so abused. His bones were curved and bent out of shape too. Such a sad case.

So that’s what I do when I’m not blogging or working as a nurse. I write articles on reptile care for my site, herpetological societies, and magazines, and I help thousands of people every year through my site, email and my mailing lists.

Next time you go into a pet store that happens to sell reptiles- ask the clerk in the reptile area if they’ve been to Tricia’s page and I bet they’ll say yes.

TVadio streaming online internet TV

November 11, 2006 by Tricia

I know that many of my visitors listen to internet radio while they are surfing the internet or working on their computers. I’ve also heard from people that live in Europe or other Countries/ Continents who are behind on the popular television series that we in North America get to see as each new episode is broadcast.

Well, I’ve found an interesting site, called TVadio that might satisfy the demand for both of these types of internet broadcasts. TVadio has developed a software that you can download for free if you click here. TVadio sounds like an interesting and easy way to access online internet TV channels.

TVadio is working to connect members to high quality internet TV channels. You’ll be able to browse and watch these channels with a click of a button. The channels are organized by keyword or tags, as well as genre and each channel is well described so you’ll have a good idea of what it’s all about before you start watching a particular channel.

TVadio has picked only high quality internet TV channels for it’s users, no short films. You will also be able to access TV content while using the TVadio browser. You can use the TVadio browser to select channels to watch or browse through the TVadio website and watch the shows from there.

The site and free browser software are currently in beta but with your feedback they plan to add onto the site and develop the software in ways which will make it even easier to use. So, do try it out and send them your feedback.

TVadio already has quite a selection of Online TV channels to view with plenty more to come. Try it out and see how you like it. It’s free so you’ve got nothing to lose.

Doctor I work with wins Giller Prize!

November 10, 2006 by Tricia

Wow! One of the doctors that I work with in the ER, Vincent Lam, received a very prestigious writing award on Tuesday evening! He won the Giller prize!

What is the giller prize?

Jack Rabinovitch founded The Giller Prize in 1994 to honour the memory of his late wife Doris Giller, an outstanding literary journalist who died of cancer in April 1993. He was assisted by several friends – most notably the late Mordecai Richler, author Alice Munro, and academician David Staines – in building the Prize’s creative template.

In 2005, The Giller Prize teamed up with Scotiabank to create The Scotiabank Giller Prize. It is the first ever co-spons0rship for Canada’s richest literary award for fiction. Under the new agreement, the purse doubled growing to Cdn. $50,000 with $40,000 going to the winner, and $2,500 being given to each of the four finalists. The Scotiabank Giller Prize is dedicated to celebrating the best in Canadian fiction each year, and to enhancing marketing efforts in bringing these books to the attention of all Canadians.

Dr. Lam is such a wonderful man. I’m so very happy for him. He’s a very good doctor and great to work with too. Actually, I think all the docs I work with in the ER are good to work with- they really do listen if a nurse has concerns about a patient.

My husband had shown me a newspaper article about the Giller prize and the 5 nominees two weeks ago. The article that I read featured Vincent Lam. As soon as I saw the article I had a feeling he would win.

The top 5 nominees were chosen out of over 100 nominees. The five that had been up for the final prize all wrote very good books. Dr. Lam was the newest author in the group, I believe.

The awards were shown on TV on Tuesday evening and before each nominee came up to the stage a brief description of their book and their life was shown through something that had been filmed earlier.

Dr. Lam’s presentation was hilarious- to me anyway because they present his book in the hospital setting – the hospital that I work in actually and the characters in the little sketch that they showed were all doctors, nurses and even a unit clerk that I work with in the ER. My husband and I were laughing – “Oh there’s Annette!” “Colleen, you big drunk!” Ahhhh “Dr. Kanahi” (gorgeous man), “Pam? Pam? She’s not nurse.” and Dr. Kumar too! It was meant to be a serious and dramatic short film, but when you know the people that were shown in a film it somehow becomes quite humorous.

Famous Canadian Author Margaret Atwood presented Dr. Lam (she actually discovered him), and then just before the award was presented the three judges discussed their feelings about each of the 5 novels up for the prize. Two of the judges are famous Canadian authors, and one was our former Governor General (remember highest position in Canada besides the Queen) Adrian Clarkson. The Governor General was the only one to discuss Dr. Lams book. To me – the author that presented him, and the judge that discussed him being such prominent Canadian figures told me a lot – I just knew he would win the award.

In the last 10 minutes of the show they awarded the Giller Prize to Dr. Lam. He kept his cool and did a very nice acceptance speech. I was so very proud of him, and of course I still am.

The CBC did an interview with Dr. Lam the following day.

His book – Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures is what appears to be a serious of short often humorous stories, but they all tie in together in the end.

He brings to vivid and convincing life the disparate but interdependent worlds of school and home, heartbreaking young love and life-altering fear in stories that introduce us to Fitz, Ming, Chen, and Sri, young medical school students and doctors in Toronto.

In “How To Get Into Medical School,” the impulsive Fitz and the ultra-rational Ming explore the possibilities of a relationship that is tested, first by the vigilance of a disapproving family and then by the extraordinary commitment demanded of medical students. In “Take All of Murphy,” three students face the challenge of their first dissection of a corpse — and the unusual quandary of deciding whether following the anatomy textbook or keeping a tattoo intact is more important. And in “A Long Migration,” perhaps the most lyrical of the stories, we see beyond Chen’s immediate world into the past of his family, and in particular that of his grandfather. Once a high-living and flamboyant member of the Chinese expatriate community in Saigon before the Vietnam War, now Percival Chen is dying in a Brisbane retirement home, and his grandson’s modern medical recommendations must make way for older potions that arrive for Percival from an older world.

You can read more about Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures: Stories at amazon, and you can purchase the book there as well, or in your local bookstore as it should be on store shelves now.

I like reading celeb gossip – do you?

November 10, 2006 by Tricia

Occasionally I give my brain a break and just travel around to different blogs to read what they have to say.

When I’m in real relax mode sometimes I end up finding the Celebrity Blogs amusing to read. I kind of like Damn I’m cute because there’s so many posts it’s easy to find something of interest to read. The latest posts are a Nip and Tuck spoiler and Reese’s divorce, and some dish on Britney.

Yeah I know – how shallow of me to like these kinds of blogs right? Come on, tell the truth, some of you find celebrity news interesting too don’t ya? I don’t want to hear about it all the time, and in fact if I do hear about it all the time I’ve been known to complain very loudly, but every once in a while it’s kind of fun to read these kinds of blogs.
