Thoof is a great way to gain visitors to your site and measure your posts popularity

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

Have you joined Thoof.com yet? It’s a site where you can go to read news articles, view photographs and videos and or posts from websites and blogs.

Members may submit their stories to Thoof when they’ve created a post that they’d like to share with the world.

Submitting your stories is actually a great way to drive traffic to your site. I know a number of bloggers who have been using Thoof regularly since they discovered it, and they’ve said that they get new visitors every day. There’s even a Thoofit button that you can drag to your bookmarks that makes it even easier to submit a story or article that interests you from any site on the web. You can find that button on the submit it page.

What’s more, when you visit Thoof and search for a particular type of story, photo or video the site will remember the choices that you’ve made so that the next time that you visit stories, photos and videos of a similar nature will be on the front page when you sign in. In this way Thoof can become your own personalized news site.

Thoof has recently added a new feature to their site. When you submit a story you’ll get a ThoofRank badge that you can add to your site. This badge will measure your stories popularity on Thoof.

I think this is a great idea. Other than looking at our sites stats or how many comments we get on a particular post we have very few ways to measure the popularity of the various posts we create. Now, when you submit a story to Thoof and use the ThoofRank badge you’ll have another way to measure how interesting your story is to others.

I think I’m going to start using Thoof more often. I mean other bloggers have said they are getting traffic to their site from the stories they’ve submitted and they’ve also said they like the stories they are reading on the site. It’s a great way to keep up with other bloggers.

I’ll start by submitting this story. It’ll also be a great way to test out the new ThoofRank badge. I wonder just how popular this story might be?

So who’s going to join me at Thoof?

Funny spam

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

Do you ever get spam email that makes you laugh? I’ve always got quite a bit of spam, probably as a result of the mailing lists I run and my website that’s been online for 12 years, but lately I’ve been getting all kinds of spam for sexual supplements.

I’m not going to mention the products by name as it will probably end up bringing more spam to this blog – like I need any more! I’m sure you’ve probably been getting this spam too though.

It’s basically stories about how someone had an accident and it destroyed their sex life until they found such and such a product. I think the stories are funny.

Have you been getting this kind of spam or other types that make you laugh because it’s so ridiculous?

I can’t bear the heat but I have to

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

We’re having another heat wave. I guess the one we had last week never really stopped, but it was much more comfortable on the weekend since there wasn’t as much humidity to deal with. Now we’re back to heat and high humidity making it almost unbearable to go outside and work in the garden.

Yes … I need to get some work done in the garden. I feel terrible, but there’s so much to do outside. Do you believe that I still haven’t put mulch down on my garden beds? Stupid me! My plants would be doing so much better if they at least had a nice layer of mulch around them as it helps to hold the moisture in the soil and keep the plants roots cool.

So right now I’m waiting for it to at least cool down a few degrees so I can go outside. It’s just after 6 pm and the temp is still quite high. It’s 30 c but with the humidity it’s 36 c which is 96.8 F.

I also want to get all our remaining garden work done this week because we’re going to have house guests for a few days. Chris’ brother and two of his kids are coming from Chicago on Wednesday and they’ll be staying in our house from Friday until at least Monday I believe.

The way I’m feeling I don’t want house guests at all but this has been planned for months. It’s hard to say no when you have that much advance notice. Oh well, if I’m not feeling well they’ll just have to entertain themselves I guess.

We used to make popcorn all the time

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

I was puttering around cleaning our kitchen cupboards the other day and I came across and appliance we haven’t used for a long time. It was our popcorn machine. We got it as a wedding present way back in 1994!

We used to have movie nights and make popcorn fairly often, but we haven’t used the popcorn machine for a few years now.

When I found the machine that had been tucked into a back corner of a cupboard I thought about making some popcorn for Chris. I can’t eat it myself these days since it aggravates my crohns, but Chris would have enjoyed it if I had made up some popcorn.

Trouble is, if I made some I’d want to eat it. Popcorn was a popular snack on night shifts when I was working at the hospital. It used to drive me nuts when I’d smell it knowing I couldn’t have any. I’m sure it’d do the same if I made some in my own house!

Do you have a popcorn machine? Do you use it?

Simple flowers – Simply beautiful

Blue Gentian

Blue Gentian Gentiana septemfida

I’ve been slow to get out and take photos of my blooming plants but the other day I went out for an hour and came back in with 279 photos! All but 4 were keepers.

The photo above is of blue Gentian. It’s a simple flower that blooms once or twice a year. It’s buds are interesting swirled cone shapes and then they open up into these delicate flowers.

The flowers above have a companion. Did you notice the ant?

Musk Mallow Malva moschata

Musk Mallow Malva moschata

The flower above is called Musk Mallow. It’s a North American native plant.

It’s very easy to grow, very hardy and as you can see it produces small delicate beautiful flowers. What more could you ask for in a plant?

Oh I know … did you know that you can eat the flowers and leaves of the musk mallow? The plant even has medicinal properties as well. I also believe that the root of the first flower, gentian is edible. See I grow a lot of plants that are not only beautiful, but edible as well.

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information.
