A nice relaxing long weekend

September 2, 2008 by Tricia

Doesn’t Labour Day weekend being over make you feel as if summer has ended? After visiting several blogs earlier today I get the feeling that a lot of people seem to begin to think of autumn and winter once the last long weekend of summer is over.

I’d like to say that we had a busy weekend, but we really didn’t. It was Chris’ last weekend of his two week holiday and now he’s returned to work. So we did some of the things that he wanted to do, like going to this really divvy bar called “The Wally” that he’s always wanted to go to ever since we moved into the area. We’ve been in this neighborhood for 7 years now so I guess it was about time that we went to the Wally.

We went to the bar yesterday afternoon and sat on the patio. It has an enclosed patio that you can only access by walking through the dark and dingy bar so we couldn’t bring our dog Midnight. Chris is dying to find bars and restaurants with patios that are dog friendly- of course Midnight needs to settle down a bit more if she wants to come out with us regularly. We each had a beer (ok Chris had two) and ordered French Fries and Onion Rings. The servings were huge! If we’d known how big our little snack was going to be we’d only have ordered one or the other.

The Wally has lots of good reviews for it’s food and atmosphere and I must admit the prices were very good and the snacks tasty. Our total bill for three beer and two very large snacks came to just over $16. Not bad at all.

If you’re dieting or taking Fentraphen it’s probably not the place to go as I doubt that they have any low calorie food items, but it was a nice thing to do on a beautiful summer afternoon.

We didn’t do much on Sunday, but on Saturday we took Midnight to a place called “Sunnybrook Farm” which is really part of a huge interconnecting park network here in Toronto. Chris wanted to see how Midnight would react when she saw the horses that they keep at the stables there seeing as her first few months of life she lived in a pen in a large barn where horse were kept.

There were a lot of flies bothering the horses, this one was rolling in the sand to try to get rid of the flies.

I think she liked seeing the horses. At first she tried to get under the fence, but when we wouldn’t let her she just sat and watched as they milled around their coral. After that we went for a long hike on some trails and through the forest. Chris took Midnight into a little creek twice on our journey so both he and the dog got to cool off a bit while I stayed on the creek bank taking photos.

After our outdoor adventure Chris had wanted to go for a beer on a patio with the dog, but we couldn’t find any dog friendly patios to visit so when we got home we all went outside into the backyard and Midnight played in the yard while Chris and I had a drink at the patio table.

At one point Chris picked up Midnight (not an easy feat as she probably weighs about 70lb now) and put her on one of our Patio chairs:

She has that “Help me, I don’t really like being up so high” kind of look on her face, doesn’t she?

If you lie in Canada or the US you had a long Labor day weekend too – what did you do?

I feel like crap, absolute crap

July 8, 2008 by Tricia

I’m in so much pain tonight. Well … really for the last week or so. Remember last week I gushed about eating fresh corn on the cob and how rare it was for me to eat it because it usually caused my Crohn’s to flare up? Yeah, well … I bought six cobs so that means we ate corn three times last week. That was at least two times too many for me.

I knew the corn would do me in, but sometimes you just gotta do it. I’ve certainly been paying for eating it the last few days.

Today I’ve had a lot of fevers. Not great when it’s super hot outside, but you know I had such a high fever when I took the dog outside for a pee at about 4 pm that the slight breeze that was hitting me made me shiver.

I shouldn’t have been shivering outside today, it was damn hot! When I was shivering outside with a fever it was 29 Celsius (84 F) and with the humidity it supposedly felt like 38 Celsius (100.4 F). Ridiculous eh?

I feel bad since it’s Chris’ birthday today. I’m sitting here like a lump when we should be celebrating.

Well, hopefully I feel better tomorrow. Chris won tickets two weeks ago for subscribing to the Danforth Music Hall’s newsletter. They give away free tickets each month to their newsletter subscribers – well to one lucky subscriber each month, I mean. So tomorrow night we’re going to see Amos Lee. He’s supposed to be a great musician however I’m not certain that I’ve ever heard any of his songs. It’s a good venue though and it will be a great thing to go out and do for Chris’ birthday.

So wish me luck that I feel better tomorrow!

There’s lots of things going on in Toronto for Canada Day

June 30, 2008 by Tricia

Tomorrow is Canada Day. It will be Canada’s 141st birthday. Our country seems so young, but we have a history that goes back into the 1600’s.

I hate it when the holiday falls in the middle of the week. Some employers give either the Monday or Friday off closest to the holiday to compensate for a mid- week holiday day, but there are lots of Canadians out there that had to work today – my husband included. He’ll have tomorrow off though and that’s the main thing.

We’re trying to decide what to do for the holiday. I already mentioned in my last post that we’ll probably have nice thick sirloin steaks and fresh corn on the cob for dinner, but what else will we do …

If you guessed go to see some fireworks you’re probably right. If the weather is decent we’ll likely head over to Ashbridge’s Bay to watch the fireworks. They load all the fireworks onto a barge on Lake Ontario and set them off over the water. It’s spectacular. Naturally I’ll try to take some pictures if I can – fireworks aren’t easy to photograph! BTW if anyone has tips on how to photograph fireworks properly I’d love to hear from you.

If you’re in the Toronto area you might be interested in learning about what’s going on in the city for Canada Day. I surfed the web and found some other bloggers talking about their Canada Day plans and some Canada Day Event listings. Here you go:

Canada Day Around Toronto – Although Ottawa is, bar none, the best place to celebrate Canada Day, Toronto is no slouch in the festivities department:. 8:00 pm, Mel Lastman Square — The official City of Toronto celebration. A concert and fireworks to music …

Canada Day Fireworks – Find out where and when to check out Canada Day Fireworks…

Canada Day – Coming soon to a more convenient day near you? – When I was a teenager, Canada Day meant gathering with my friends at Major’s Hill Park, drinking (sorry, Mom) and generally having a good time. The bars were packed, the buses were free after 10 pm (another something Toronto might …

HOLIDAY WEEK – Our Annual Canada Day Preview – Finally, if you want to catch me, please come down to the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Johnada will be celebrating the only way I know how – by attacking people with blow up donuts at the first Canadian Donut Olympics. Only in Canada …

I hope that all the Canadians reading this have a great Canada Day – even if you just stay home and relax.

Man that was a great dinner

June 29, 2008 by Tricia

I’m pleasantly full right now. Chris and I just had a delicious dinner. Yum.

Earlier this evening we went out grocery shopping. The stores will be closed tomorrow by the time he gets home from work since the next day is Canada Day so we had to get everything we’d need for the holiday today.

I’m so glad we went shopping. Our grocery store had grilling sirloin steak on sale so I picked up some for our dinner tonight and two for our dinner on Tuesday. They also had fresh corn on the cob. Now I can’t eat corn on the cob very often thanks to my Crohn’s – I eat it maybe once or twice a year and I often pay for it dearly, but I love it and there’s nothing better than fresh corn on the cob, especially when it’s a rare treat.

I also picked up ingredients for salad – organic mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumber and some light feta cheese. Plus they had berries on sale so I picked up fresh organic raspberries, locally grown strawberries and some blueberries.

As we left the grocery store we stopped in the wine shop and got their wine of the month – a lovely Australian Shiraz. Oddly enough that’s the only thing that I’ve mentioned that we didn’t have this evening.

Once we got home I quickly marinated the steaks with Montreal Steak sauce and prepared the corn, salad and fruit for our “strawberry” shortcake.

Chris grilled the steaks on the BBQ to perfection and as I said the meal was delicious. Steak, corn on the cob, a nice salad and a light dessert of fruit over a small piece of angel food cake. Yum.

Is it the flu?

May 27, 2008 by Tricia

Earlier this evening, just after Chris got home from work, I suddenly became really nauseated. I have no idea why.

I tend to get mildly nauseated quite often due to the Crohn’s disease, but what I experienced this evening was full on nausea. I hope I don’t have the flu.

I was laying on my side on the couch doing something on the laptop when it hit me. I decided to just try lying flat to see if that would help and it made it worse. It took about two hours to settle down again – all of the time with me thinking I was going to toss my cookies at any moment. Bleh.

Needless to say we didn’t have the nice steak that we were planning on barbecuing. We had macaroni. Other than soup it was the only bland thing I could think of that probably wouldn’t upset my stomach even more. I’m not the biggest fan of mac and cheese either so I guess I had another awful dinner.

Hopefully I feel better tomorrow after a good sleep.

In other news … I think Midnight has started to figure out how to undo the latches on her crate. Two or three times in the last week I’ve found one undone when I know they were both done up. I guess we’ll have to get one of those small tsa locks to put on the crate when we go out if she keeps this up.

Darn smart puppy.
