We’ll have visitors soon!

August 9, 2007 by Tricia

My brother in law is going to be visiting this weekend from Chicago. He’s bringing two of his teenage kids with him. Oh this should be fun!

We called my brother in laws cell phone last night right around midnight just to see where he was. You see he’d said that he expected to be at Chris’ parents house by 1 or 2 a.m. Unfortunately it took him about two hours to get out of Chicago yesterday so he was behind in his drive and he was just at the US Canada border in Sarnia. Yeah, he was way behind – about four hours behind!

We found out that this trip isn’t just a visit to Canada to see relatives. When his kids were born we thought that he’d filled papers for them so that they’d be dual citizens of both the USA and Canada. You see, up until a year or two ago my brother in law had retained his Canadian citizenship and his wife is American so his kids should be eligible to have citizenship in both countries.

So right now I’m not sure if his kids have their Canadian papers or not. I don’t think they do since my brother in laws mission this visit is to secure Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) for his kids. I would have thought that they’d have had that since birth.

Hopefully things go smoothly otherwise that’s all we’ll hear about most of this coming week!

Chris’ brother was supposed to come to Toronto on Friday but now he might not come until Saturday due to this paperwork problem that he’s trying to resolve.

As long as we get to go to the Taste of the Danforth this weekend I’ll be happy. We didn’t go last year when Tim came down because he had his youngest child with him and he was afraid of losing him in the huge crowd!

The neighbors might move!

August 8, 2007 by Tricia

My karaoke neighbors might be moving!!!

Watch now that I said it won’t happen.

They’ve decided that September is a good time to try to sell their house so they are going to “test” the market and put it up for sale in September.

Dare I say that I do hope that they sell and that we get quiet neighbors? I fully realize we could get even worse neighbors but I’m willing to take the chance.

Not only do these people karaoke almost daily and or play guitar and tuba! They also cook quite a bit of their food in their enclosed back porch. You know, the porch that’s attached to ours? They fry their smelly foods back there.

Not only does this smell up our house if we have our back door open, but it also makes me fear that a house fire will start. Our houses are made of brick but if their porch caught on fire so would ours.

Oh I hope we get better neighbors.

It feels like I’m walking on a toothache …

August 7, 2007 by Tricia

Well guess what? I got my gardening done. Or pretty much done.

Chris was puttering around outside yesterday evening. He was supposed to be doing one small thing then he was going to come back inside let me know he was done and then we’d go out and start working on putting compost and mulch down on the garden beds.

Well he puttered for two hours and by the time he finally came back inside it was at least 8 pm. So that’s when I went out and started working in the garden.

We returned inside at 3:30 am!

Yes I am a midnight gardener. Yes I am an extreme gardener.

The only problem was that when I took my shoe off I could barely walk on my left foot. It felt like what I’d assume walking on a toothache would feel like. Every step brought tears to my eyes.

Remember I said I’d injured both my feet in the past and that I thought the humidity was finally making them ache? Broken bones, sprains, strains and oh yeah a torn posterior tibialis tendon count as some of the past injuries. So the foot that was hurting like it’s never hurt before was the one that had had the torn tendon a few years ago. That was a gardening accident from overuse! I literally ripped the tendon while planting roses for 14 hours and didn’t know how bad I’d hurt myself until two days later!

My back hurts too … and yeah my stomach/abdomen is still aching as well.

Who says gardening is passive???

I guess you could say I’m a lump of pain today.

But the gardens done!

I can’t bear the heat but I have to

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

We’re having another heat wave. I guess the one we had last week never really stopped, but it was much more comfortable on the weekend since there wasn’t as much humidity to deal with. Now we’re back to heat and high humidity making it almost unbearable to go outside and work in the garden.

Yes … I need to get some work done in the garden. I feel terrible, but there’s so much to do outside. Do you believe that I still haven’t put mulch down on my garden beds? Stupid me! My plants would be doing so much better if they at least had a nice layer of mulch around them as it helps to hold the moisture in the soil and keep the plants roots cool.

So right now I’m waiting for it to at least cool down a few degrees so I can go outside. It’s just after 6 pm and the temp is still quite high. It’s 30 c but with the humidity it’s 36 c which is 96.8 F.

I also want to get all our remaining garden work done this week because we’re going to have house guests for a few days. Chris’ brother and two of his kids are coming from Chicago on Wednesday and they’ll be staying in our house from Friday until at least Monday I believe.

The way I’m feeling I don’t want house guests at all but this has been planned for months. It’s hard to say no when you have that much advance notice. Oh well, if I’m not feeling well they’ll just have to entertain themselves I guess.

Chris never tells me his work schedule!

July 31, 2007 by Tricia

Does your spouse work shift work? When I was at work in the ER I did shift work, but I’m off work right now due to illness. My husband has always done shift work as well since he’s worked at the hospital.

What bothers me about his shifts is that he doesn’t always write down the schedule ahead of time. It’s not like we have tons of plans to make, but it would certainly be easier to book doctors appointments, plan meals and figure out other things if he’d write his darn schedule down!

Normally he works 7:30 to 3:30, 10 to 6 pm or 12 noon until 8 pm shifts. Most of the time he’ll be on the same shift throughout the whole week. So once I know his schedule that week it’s not too bad. It still doesn’t help with planning future events, but at least I know what’s happening that week.

This week his schedule is totally different. When did he tell me of the change? Sunday evening! This week he’s covering for a senior co-worker who’s on holidays so he’s working from 3:30 pm until 11:30 pm. Since he’s worked in the OR recovery area he’s never worked that late a shift.

I don’t mind that he’s working this shift. I’m sure he likes it compared to all the 7:30 am shifts that he worked when he had to get up at 5:30 just to get ready. I just wish I’d known. I think it’s actually a pretty boring shift. Last night he when they didn’t have patients he was going over all the Folded Brochures just to pass the time. Tidying them up and so on.

There’s only the two of us at home too. So when one of us works in the evening a meal needs to be planned that can be eaten alone and also easily reheated for the person who’s been working late. Even better, I like to make a meal that can be heated at work for Chris so that he doesn’t end up eating a full dinner really late at night.

His not telling me of his shift change didn’t allow me to make something decent for him to take to work with him last night. However after he left for work I got busy making a very easy yet delicious meat sauce. I made a huge pot of it. I always end up freezing some since there’s too much and also I like having a few easy things stored in the freezer for quick meals.

I let my sauce simmer for close to three hours. By the time it was done I was starving! I made spaghetti to have with the meat sauce and yum. It was delicious. Chris had some spaghetti and meat sauce when he came home from work and loved it too.

So now, thanks to the big batch of spaghetti sauce that I made we’ve got some quick and easy meals that Chris can take to work or that I’m happy to eat alone.

So, back to my initial question. Does your spouse work shift work? Do they let you know of schedule changes in advance? Or is your spouse like mine making you guess at the schedule all the time?
