In the Spring I plan on riding my bike more often

February 22, 2008 by Tricia

Spring will be here soon and if you’re like me, suffering through a very cold winter with lots of snow, you’re probably yearning for the nice weather to arrive. Usually by this time of year I’ve got cabin fever. It’s not quite as bad this year because we’ve got the puppy and whether I like it or not I’ve been getting outside every single day. No matter how cold it’s been. Brrrr

As I said when we got our puppy one of the reasons we got her was so that I could get more active. That new resolve had led to a lot more walking. I think I probably walk at least three to five extra miles each day now.

When the weather gets better, in about a month, I’ll get my bike out and hopefully start to go for rides a few times a week if not every day. If I don’t ride too fast our puppy can trot along beside me for while I go for a short ride.

We do need to get another bike though. My husband Chris has two bikes but neither of them are in good shape. One is a ten speed that only has one speed now! The other is also a 10 speed but it’s totally dismantled.

So I think one of the things we’ll purchase in the next month or so is a new bike for Chris. We have great bike trails near us here in almost downtown Toronto and then there’s always the boardwalk area at the beach too. They’re great areas for both walks, runs and bike rides.

I took a look at the Beach Cruiser website and I really like one or two of the cruiser bike styles. I think Chris will like them too.

I really like the yellow one that I included an image of at the top of this post! It’s so bright you couldn’t miss it and I like the style too. It’s a womens model and the price is quite reasonable too! Who knows, maybe I’ll even get myself a new bike too! They accept credit card and Paypal as forms of payment. Perhaps I could get the two of us new bikes using the earnings in my Paypal account. Now that would be nice!

They have cruisers for men, women and children as well as low rider and chopper style models too. Take a look at the site if you’ve been thinking of getting a new bike or if you have plans to become more active this Spring.

I’m certain that any of the cruiser models would make a fantastic gift for someone special in your life too.

The pain is back

February 19, 2008 by Tricia

It seems I spoke too soon. My pain is back with a vengeance.

It’s just after 4 a.m. and I’m lying on the couch in severe pain. Crohn’s disease sucks. There I said it. It sucks. I hate it. It seems like my whole life revolves around this stupid disease. I can’t plan for next week or next month or even for tomorrow for that matter because I never know if I’m going to be feeling well enough to do anything.

Yesterday was the first day in more than a week that I felt ok. Ok doesn’t mean I feel well. It means I feel well enough to get some things done, go for a walk, do some shopping, get some house work done etc.

I’m certain that I had a bowel obstruction over the weekend. It resolved over night and I awoke on Monday feeling a lot better. As a result I probably ended up doing too much yesterday.

Chris was home since Monday is his normal day off, but it also happened to be a holiday here in Ontario – Family day. It didn’t feel like a holiday weekend though … it just felt normal since as I said, Chris usually has Mondays off work.

Since Chris was home he did the dishes and started my day by grooming the puppy. She’s started shedding again in the past week or so and she’s shedding a lot! I sat on the kitchen floor brushing the puppy’s coat with the zoom brush and collected about three cups of hair! The floor was covered with hair and sweeping just wasn’t doing the job so I ended up vacuuming the whole house, the dogs two doggy beds and yes folks I even took the vacuum to the dog. Luckily she didn’t mind – she likes the vacuum.

The rest of my day was spent spending some time with Chris and our puppy, working on the computer on some of my sites and making dinner (baked chicken breast, steamed veggies and a fresh salad – most of that not being so hot for someone with Crohns – oh well!). I haven’t gotten much done on my active sites or the new sites for quite a while because I’ve been feeling so awful. The email is also piling up. I’ve got quite a few sites to add to the blogrolls that I run and several saved emails waiting for replies. I just can’t keep up with it all these days it seems.

By 10 pm my abdominal pain was coming back and my left knee was aching too. It seems the Crohn’s is going to my joints – or else it’s the weather, I haven’t figured that one out yet.

The pain has gradually gotten worse as the night progresses. My pain meds are doing absolutely nothing to touch the pain. If it keeps getting worse I’ll probably end up going to Emerg this time.

This totally sucks. I think I need new intestines … is there a market for that???

Two hour lost repeat – Scrolling commentary???

January 30, 2008 by Tricia

Ok I’m happy that the powers that be decide to help us remember what happened on Lost at the end of the season last year with tonights two hour episode, but WTF is with the scrolling commentary at the bottom of the screen?

Does ABC think we’re children that can’t remember unless we read the really cheesy lines that are supposedly telling us what’s going on on screen?

It’s really distracting! I hate it!

Come on ABC … if we really couldn’t remember everything that happened in those last two episodes most of us could read recaps or even watch the complete shows online.

Did/does anyone else find the scrolling commentary terribly distracting? and cheesy?

Clean house and cleaner air too

January 25, 2008 by Tricia

Even though I’ve been feeling terrible the last few days Chris and I did manage to get some housework done on Monday. He was off work, as he often is on Mondays, and late in the afternoon we decided it was time to vacuum. It was the first time we vacuumed around our puppy.

Now don’t get the wrong idea and think we live in a pig sty. We don’t have any carpeting in our house so dusting, sweeping and mopping regularly is usually sufficient. However, every once in a while it’s good to pull out the vacuum and do a thorough job of cleaning.

We had no idea how our puppy would react to our very loud vacuum.

I had a feeling she’d be ok with it as she doesn’t seem to mind when I use my blow dryer and the groomer said she was interested in their big blow dryer when she was being dried off at the groomers last Monday. Still … you just never know how an animal might react to something new so we wanted to try out the vacuum when Chris and I were both home. That way one of us could comfort her or totally remove her from the room if she started to freak out.

Turns out that she loved the vacuum. Chris started the vacuum and she went right up to it and acted as if it was a new toy to play with. She didn’t seem to mind the noise at all and was happy to watch as Chris vacuumed all of the dining room chairs, the inside of the air registers and so on.

It’s good to know that we can pull out our vacuum whenever we need to now and know that the dog won’t be upset by the noise. We just have to make sure she doesn’t bite the cord or the vacuum hose when we aren’t looking!

I’ve always found this house to be a little dustier than I think it should be … well compared to newer houses anyway.

I think it’s because we have an older furnace system – an oil furnace actually, and also because our 1927 triple brick house is made of lathe and plaster. Well the interior walls are made of lathe and plaster I mean! I’m also sure it doesn’t help that our living room dining room ceiling has had a bit of work done on it and is currently waiting for us to put up that tin ceiling I’ve been talking about for ages.

Sometime in the future we’ll think about changing over to gas heating. At that time we’ll also need to get a new furnace. I’m sure a new furnace with better filters or an air cleaning system on the furnace will make a huge difference in the amount of dust in the house!

Oh, on Saturday we splurged and got two air purifiers. Chris and I both smoke. Yes I know – we’re bad. We plan on quitting soon. We figured that the air purifiers will help with the air quality in our home too as they clean the air of dust, pollen, smoke, mold and bacteria particles. They are Honeywell Hepa air purifiers with permanent filters.

We were going to get one big air purifier, however since the air purifier should be located in the area that we sit in and smoke in most often to be most effective we figured a big one, one large enough to clean the air in a large open living room dining room would be too noisy to sit be side we opted to get two of the next size down. So we got two medium sized air purifiers. One is near where we sit in the living room and the other is at the other end of the room in the dining room.

So now our house is really clean and the air should be a lot cleaner too!

Do you use air purifiers in your home or do you have a funny story about your pet and vacuums or other cleaning equipment?

We finally got some more snow

January 23, 2008 by Tricia

Well we got some more snow yesterday. One of my regular readers had comments on one of my weekend posts that it looked like we had no snow. We didn’t! It was freezing cold here for the last week and there wasn’t a flake of snow on the ground.

Those of you who don’t garden or don’t experience severe cold weather may not realize this, but when it’s really cold outside the snow helps to insulate and protect the plants in our yards. When there’s no snow the plants are exposed to all of the elements and it’s not a surprise when you end up losing a few plants in the spring as a result. So I’m happy that it snowed!

Our puppy is happy that it snowed too. She just loves to jump around in the snow and even roll in it. I have a feeling she’d be happy if there was snow outside all year round! I’ll take that as a sign that she’ll probably also enjoy the beach and frolicking in the water come summer.

You know what’s really weird? Over the weekend we went to Walmart to get a few things and on probably the coldest day of the year so far we saw a man walking around with a set of Cleveland golf clubs. I can’t remember where I saw the man – perhaps it was outside one of the malls we went to … but it sure was strange seeing someone walking around with a big golf club bag when it was so very cold outside.
