Retirement communities and coping with loneliness as one ages

August 9, 2007 by Tricia

Do you ever think about what might happen to you as you age? No, I don’t mean wrinkles, achy joints and so on. I mean, do you wonder if you’ll be able to continue living on your own in a house, apartment or condo or do you wonder if you’ll end up in a nursing home?

As a nurse, the prospect of ending up in a nursing home is not appealing. Yes there are good ones out there, but my feeling is if I can’t really move around – even in a wheelchair or something – then I really don’t want to be in the position of having others care for me.

I guess it’s because I know the level of care involved for a person that’s bed ridden, and how in some places that care is not quite up to par.

Now, retirement communities are a different story. If I was able to move about, cook for myself and I was generally enjoying life living in a retirement community might not be all that bad.

Many retirement communities are set up so that people are living in apartment or townhouse like dwellings – similar to if they were living on their own. The only major difference is that everyone who’s living in the retirement community is around the same age as you are, and there might be on site nursing care or a doctor that comes around once a week or once a month to check on the residents.

A nurse might even come in daily to help with taking medications and so on, but otherwise the residents live on their own.

Many retirement communities are also set up with a pool and perhaps a communal area where crafts or other community related activities take place so that residents can socialize with one another. I think that’s great since loneliness is often the number one complaint of the elderly. You’d think it would be declining health but it’s loneliness.

I’m actually not surprised at that fact. As I watched my parents age they were saddened as they lost friends they’d grown up with and known most of their lives, lost their own parents and siblings, and eventually when my mother lost my father there was no denying that loneliness was going to be a huge factor that we, as her children, would have to combat.

I’m all for those who are growing older or who are elderly living on their own if they are able to cope or living with relatives, but if they don’t have enough people in their lives to keep them from falling into depression due to loneliness or if their loved ones aren’t able to visit as often as necessary to be sure that the person is coping I think the next best thing is a retirement community.

What do you think?

Organic herbal remedies for Psoriasis and Eczema

August 9, 2007 by Tricia

I suffer from eczema. I think I’ve had it since the day I was born. When it flares up it can be an uncomfortable affliction and depending upon where it’s located it can also be unsightly.

If you suffer from Psoriasis or Eczema you might be interested in visiting www.champori.com where they sell natural remedies for both of these disorders.

There are organic herbal sprays and creams made with unique Tibetan recipes that you can use on your psoriasis, eczema and even atopic dermatitis. View the photos and testimonials on the site to see what you think.

I may consider trying this for my eczema the next time I have a flare.

It feels like I’m walking on a toothache …

August 7, 2007 by Tricia

Well guess what? I got my gardening done. Or pretty much done.

Chris was puttering around outside yesterday evening. He was supposed to be doing one small thing then he was going to come back inside let me know he was done and then we’d go out and start working on putting compost and mulch down on the garden beds.

Well he puttered for two hours and by the time he finally came back inside it was at least 8 pm. So that’s when I went out and started working in the garden.

We returned inside at 3:30 am!

Yes I am a midnight gardener. Yes I am an extreme gardener.

The only problem was that when I took my shoe off I could barely walk on my left foot. It felt like what I’d assume walking on a toothache would feel like. Every step brought tears to my eyes.

Remember I said I’d injured both my feet in the past and that I thought the humidity was finally making them ache? Broken bones, sprains, strains and oh yeah a torn posterior tibialis tendon count as some of the past injuries. So the foot that was hurting like it’s never hurt before was the one that had had the torn tendon a few years ago. That was a gardening accident from overuse! I literally ripped the tendon while planting roses for 14 hours and didn’t know how bad I’d hurt myself until two days later!

My back hurts too … and yeah my stomach/abdomen is still aching as well.

Who says gardening is passive???

I guess you could say I’m a lump of pain today.

But the gardens done!

I can’t bear the heat but I have to

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

We’re having another heat wave. I guess the one we had last week never really stopped, but it was much more comfortable on the weekend since there wasn’t as much humidity to deal with. Now we’re back to heat and high humidity making it almost unbearable to go outside and work in the garden.

Yes … I need to get some work done in the garden. I feel terrible, but there’s so much to do outside. Do you believe that I still haven’t put mulch down on my garden beds? Stupid me! My plants would be doing so much better if they at least had a nice layer of mulch around them as it helps to hold the moisture in the soil and keep the plants roots cool.

So right now I’m waiting for it to at least cool down a few degrees so I can go outside. It’s just after 6 pm and the temp is still quite high. It’s 30 c but with the humidity it’s 36 c which is 96.8 F.

I also want to get all our remaining garden work done this week because we’re going to have house guests for a few days. Chris’ brother and two of his kids are coming from Chicago on Wednesday and they’ll be staying in our house from Friday until at least Monday I believe.

The way I’m feeling I don’t want house guests at all but this has been planned for months. It’s hard to say no when you have that much advance notice. Oh well, if I’m not feeling well they’ll just have to entertain themselves I guess.

I’m not sure I can take this anymore

August 6, 2007 by Tricia

I don’t know what’s going on with me and my body. By body I mean my abdomen and the Crohn’s disease that plagues it.

I’ve been in horrible pain for most of the last week. I take medication for the Crohn’s and I take pain meds. Neither seems to be helping much at all.

I have pain all the time, but when it’s really bad it seems to localize itself to my lower right side. The symptoms and pain levels are comparable to someone suffering from appendicitis. If you’ve ever had appendicitis you now know what I’m going through – all the time.

It’s really hard to stay upbeat when you feel this bad.

I don’t know how I’ve managed it, but I’ve been fairly positive in the more than 2.5 years that this Crohn’s flare has been going on. I really try hard to not let it get to me and I keep my mind occupied with other things like my hobbies – gardening, photography, reading, blogging and so on … but if this horrid pain keeps up I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to stay positive.

I need a break from the pain.
