I really need to get into shape!

September 28, 2007 by Tricia

You know being stuck at home due to illness can really make you get out of shape fast. I’ve been feeling so awful for the past two months that I really haven’t done much of anything.

When I work in my garden, wow, I really feel it. I don’t think there’s been a time this summer when I’ve worked in the garden and haven’t come in with a sore back.

I need to get back into shape! I’ve lost muscle tone – that’s for sure. Lately I’ve been thinking that I should buy one of those treadmill machines. It’s going to be cold here soon and bad weather will follow. I couldn’t convince myself to get outside as much as I should in the summer so I doubt it will change in the winter time. That’s why I think some form of exercise machine might be in order. Maybe I’ll even try something like muscle milk to speed up the process of getting back into shape. Maybe.

To make matters worse my doctors talking about putting me on prednisone soon. Almost everyone I know that’s been on steroids ends up gaining weight. I’m at a good weight right now, but if I go on steroids I’ll probably bloat up and gain weight. Great. Inactive, out of shape and facing weight gain? Bad news!

Make Yourself Beautiful

September 26, 2007 by Tricia

If you live in the UK you might have heard of the cosmetic surgery company Make Yourself Beautiful. MYA as I’ll call it for the remainder of this article, has clinics throughout the UK in London, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle. MYA also makes regular visits to major cities throughout the UK to perform cosmetic surgery on clients who are looking to improve true physical flaws or those who simply want enhance their looks.

As you might expect some of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed by MYA surgeons are Breast reduction, Breast uplift, facial surgery such as rhinoplasty, body reshaping and other non surgical procedures such as microdermabrasion, and of course Breast Enlargement, one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries of all time.

One of the things that makes this company stand out for me is that when they do a surgical procedure such as breast enlargement the patient must stay overnight in a hospital. As a former cosmetic surgery nurse here in North America I know that many procedures are often performed in clinics and the patients are recovered in place for about 6 hours and then allowed to go home. I feel that it’s safer for a patient to be observed overnight and I’m very happy to hear that MYA requires their breast enlargement clients to stay overnight in a hospital. Good for them.

Many women have their breasts enlarged after losing pregnancy weight or because they are naturally small breasted and want to enhance their looks and possibly their confidence in their body image. I also know that many women end up having breast enlargement surgery when they decide to have a body flaw corrected. For example it’s common for women to have one breast be slightly larger than the other, but some women have quite a difference in the size of each breast. Those women might elect to have enlargement surgery on the smaller breast to even out the size of their bust.

It’s actually quite interesting to hear the variety of reasons why women decide to have breast enlargement surgeries. I’m sure many people believe that it’s simply done in order to have large breasts, but there are so many valid reasons for having it done like the examples I’ve listed above that once you hear a few you begin to realize how this surgery could really change some peoples lives for the better.

If you happen to live in the UK and if you’ve been considering having some form of cosmetic surgery visit the Make Yourself Beautiful website to learn more about their services and to book a consultation.

The Doctor is in the House!

September 26, 2007 by Tricia

Wasn’t House amazing tonight?

I love the constant bickering and back biting that goes on between Wilson and House. One kidnaps the others guitar so the other kidnaps a patient? What other show has that kind of humor going on while a medical mystery is trying to be solved? None!

As some of you know I started the WatchingHouse blog on the 451 network last November, but I gave that up and I’m no longer writing that blog. I found I couldn’t write a serious recap of the show and actually enjoy watching the program. I started to dislike watching House because I knew I always had to write up a summary after watching the show. Plus I had to make a post daily and with the show going on hiatus several times last year it was very hard to keep coming up with material.

So here I am writing about the show after watching it again eh? Well this isn’t a summary. Just an opinion. No pressure.

I still find that the medical facts on House suck. Lots of mistakes. More so than any other medical show that I watch. I was hoping that that would improve this year, but if the season opener is any hint as to what’s to come I’d say that there will still be plenty of medical mistakes.

So it looks like House will have a room full of potential team mates next week. That should be interesting. The preview looked like it will be a funny show.

I think it was true to form right down to three medical misdiagnoses before finally finding the real problem just in the nick of time. What – you didn’t notice that just about every show in the past has three guesses that end up being wrong before House or a team member finally figure out what is making their patient so sick? Uh huh – happens all the time. That’s the House formula and they’re sticking to it.

So what did you think of the season opener? Did you feel it was still true House even without his three team members from last year? or was it missing something?

Doctors, drugs and pregnancy

September 25, 2007 by Tricia

At the end of August I had an appointment with my pain doctor, but I had to cancel it because I had the flu at the time. I then had to wait two weeks for my rescheduled appointment.

Of course this has thrown my prescriptions all off. When I missed my appointment I was almost due for a new prescription of my pain meds. She doesn’t like to write out prescriptions when medicines aren’t due. I don’t mind that as I used to work in a pain clinic for close to 10 years and I know that people in chronic pain can abuse their drugs and overuse them.

So, when I was due for my meds I had to call my pharmacy who then placed a call to the doctor to get the refill.

Now since my appointments are out of whack I just had to do that again. I’ve only got a few days worth of pain meds left.

I hate having to call the pharmacy to get refills. They are slow, don’t always call the doctor and the whole experience of having to ask a third party for my pain meds kind of makes me feel like a drug abuser.

To top that off, during my last appointment with my pain doctor in mid September we were talking about what would happen if I became pregnant. You guys know we’re trying to get pregnant right? Well that’s not always the best thing when you are on pain meds. None of the meds I’m on will hurt a baby, but the doctor did talk to me about the fact that if I’ve been taking pain meds while pregnant our baby would probably have to go through a mini drug rehab when it’s born.

I’m hoping that’s not the case if I do get pregnant. Many women with Crohn’s end up going into remission when they get pregnant and often feel their best while pregnant. I’m hoping I’m one of those women as I’d be able to get off my pain meds and have a truly healthy baby if that were the case.

Whatever happens if I do get pregnant I think I’ll try to get off the pain meds that I’m on even if I’m still having pain symptoms from the Crohn’s disease. Keep your fingers crossed that the non narcotic pain medication that I got two weeks ago works for me as I’ll be able to start getting off the heavy duty pain meds if it works!

Chris and the talent show

September 25, 2007 by Tricia

Yesterday was Chris’ day off work but he ended up going to work for a while anyway.

He’d planned to go to work on Monday most of last week. You see they had a talent contest at lunch time and Chris had planned to play guitar and sing a song with another guitar player. It didn’t help that his workplace called at 8:30 in the morning asking if he could do an extra shift because someone had called in sick. Chris managed to pass that shift on to someone else though as he really wanted to be in the talent contest.

Before the contest Chris went to work to help them set up the “stage”. Somehow he managed to get sidetracked by someone and ended up helping one of the other hospital employees put IBM memory in a computer! Yes it was one of the IT staff he was helping. I don’t think that there’s anyone Chris doesn’t know in the hospital.

Chris and his friend from work did well in the talent contest. They came in second! They probably would have won, but one of the nurses that works in the hospital brought in a saw and played Amazing Grace on her saw. Strange talent, but she must have been good at it as she won.

I didn’t even ask Chris if he won a prize or anything for coming in second. I’ll have to ask him in the morning.
