Headachey, sick and having some mighty strange dreams!

March 20, 2009 by Tricia

I’ve been feeling just awful all week. Rather than my normal Crohn’s aches and complaints I think I might be fighting something else this time around.

I’ve had a headache since either Monday evening or sometime early Tuesday morning, fevers (normally have lots thanks to the Crohns) and I’m feeling nauseated. If I am fighting something I hope I get over it soon! This is a drag!

Another thought occurred to me. My dog who I haven’t had spade yet (been meaning to all year but we keep having health and or financial emergencies) just went into heat for the second time. Maybe her hormones are messing with mine and that’s why I’m having a headachey week? Hey … anything’s possible.

Maybe you’ve experienced this as well … you know when you are getting sick? Sometimes your dreams change. Either your don’t seem to dream at all (noticed by those who seem to dream all the time otherwise) or your dreams suddenly get even stranger than normal? Mine have gotten stranger!

The other night I dreamed that I was standing up near the couch and placing crackers with peanut butter on them on the COUCH (???) when I felt someone staring at me. I went over to the loveseat by the window and I could see the body of a man leaning against the window and looking down at me. Then I glanced at the door and the lock was damaged and two people ran into the house. I woke up after that terrified with my heart racing! Scary and strange dream, eh? Maybe our mouse or whatever wild animal it is that we have in our wall influenced that dream?

Then last night my dreams had TV commercials in them! Hmmm you know you’re watching too much TV when your dreams start to have commercials. LOL One was a life insurance commercial that drives me nuts whenever it comes on because it’s three times as loud as the other commercials and the TV show that I’m watching and another was about motorcycle accident lawyers Los Angeles. That was weird, I live in Toronto, why would I dream of LA lawyers or motorcycle accidents other than the fact that I’ve always been a little nervous around motorcycles. Odd.

Do you have strange dreams when you have a cold, the flu or some other bug? I always seem to have ones that are much stranger than normal and that’s saying something since most of my dreams seem to be more than a little out there to begin with. LOL

Herbed Pasta with Spinach – I’m Stuffed!

March 17, 2009 by Tricia

I’m so full right now! Chris and I just had a kind of late dinner. Oh I was prepared to cook it by about 6:30, but Chris wasn’t due home from work until eight so I had to wait before I could try out a new recipe.

Yesterday while reading the March issue of Chatelaine (a Canadian Magazine) I came across a recipe for Herbed Pasta with Spinach. I modified the recipe a little bit as we didn’t have any goat cheese (feta) and I couldn’t find a brand I liked in the grocery store yesterday. So I used 3 tablespoons of herb and garlic light Philadelphia cream cheese instead of the goat cheese and I added chicken to the recipe. Yummy!

Here’s the original recipe:

Herbed Pasta with Spinach

  • 1/2 of a 450 gm pkg of chunky pasta (rigatoni, rotini) – about 2 cups
  • 19 oz can of stewed tomatoes
  • 1 tsp Italian Seasoning (or 1/2 tsp each of dried basil and oregano leaves)
  • pinch of chili flakes
  • 1 cup crumbled goat cheese
  • 3 cups baby spinach leaves
  • Cook your pasta as per the package directions and set aside.
  • Meanwhile, pour tomatoes with juices into a large saucepan and set over medium high heat. Add seasonings. Boil uncovered, stirring often to develop flavors – about 3 minutes. Reduce heat to low and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally while pasta cooks.
  • When the pasta is cooked, drain and then stir pasta into the tomato mixture along with half of the goat cheese. (Here’s where my recipe differs. I added the light cream cheese directly to the stewed tomatoes when they were simmering as I didn’t have any feta cheese). Stir in the spinach leaves (they will wilt quickly once added to the hot pasta) and serve with the remaining cheese sprinkled on top.
  • My recipe also differed in that I added chicken to it. Prior to making the sauce and pasta I got out a large skinless boneless chicken breast, cut it into bite sized pieces and then sauteed the meat in a pan with some Italian spices, basil and garlic. I then set the chicken aside until the pasta dish ready and topped our servings with the chicken pieces.

Delicious!

I only used half the sauce and half the chicken that I’d cooked for our meal so we’ll have this dish again tomorrow. I certainly don’t mind eating the same meal for dinner two nights in a row – not when it was this tasty!

Do you ever come across recipes in magazines that look and or sound so tasty that you want to try making them right away?

What a beautiful day in Toronto

March 6, 2009 by Tricia

It was just lovely today here in Toronto. Warmer than most early to mid-Spring days! By 3 pm it had reached 18 Celsius (64 F)! We’re supposed to have above zero weather up until next Wednesday or so, but it looks like today will have been the warmest – unless something changes over the next few days forecast wise.

It was far too nice a day to stay inside. Earlier in the day I looked outside at the garden, there were still a few small patches of snow in the shady areas, but it was melting fast. For a few minutes I even contemplated doing a little yard work – tidying up the garden, but it’s far too early. I’m sure we’ll have some freezing weather before the end of March.

So … Midnight our young Labrador Retriever got the most benefit from the nice day. She got a nice long walk with me in the afternoon and then when Chris came home from work we all went out for a very long walk. All in all, Midnight probably got two hours worth of walks today.

In the winter when there’s lots of snow Midnight likes to roll in the snow. We’ll be walking along and she’ll jump on someone’s lawn or in a snow bank and either roll around in the snow or do a faceplant and slide her body along the snow as I walk along side her. I try to make sure the snow is clean where ever she does this. It’s pretty funny to see the faceplant slide. I’ve seen her push her body like that through the snow for 10 feet or more. I’m sure anyone watching must wonder what the crazy dog is doing.

There’s very little snow now – only in really shady areas. That didn’t stop Midnight though … she tried to roll in the wet and sometimes muddy grassy areas and even attempted her faceplant slide. Of course I stopped her each time as I didn’t want to bring a dirty muddy dog back into the house. LOL

She tried to roll in the wet grass a few times when Chris and I took our evening walk, but it was just too wet and muddy.

We did something different for our evening walk with Midnight. When Chris came home he told me that our hospital was finally getting two new Restaurants. Al we’d had before was the hospital cafeteria and a coffee/ quick food area in the lobby that was run by the cafeteria staff. The new restaurants or food places are Subway and a Panzerotto Pizza. The Subway shop isn’t open yet but the Panzerotto Pizza had opened today.

So we walked to the hospital and while I stood outside with Midnight Chris went inside and ordered us two Panzerotto’s (They are like folded fried pizza’s, yummy, some might call them Calazones?) and some chicken wings. The place was really busy and I ended up standing outside with Midnight for over 45 minutes! It was probably busy because it was just after 7:30 so a lot of staff were getting off work and visiting hours were about to end so maybe some of the visitors were getting food before going home too.

Since there were a lot of staff getting off work I wasn’t too bored waiting for Chris to get our food. I talked to a few nurses and other hospital staff that I knew. One ER nurse that I used to work with had just received a new Bedat watch for her birthday. Man was that a nice watch!

After walking home Chris and I sat down to eat our food. I’m soooooo full now. That Panzerotti was filling! I don’t think I’ve had one for several years and now I know why … they make you feel so stuffed! In fact the panzerottis were so filling Chris and I only had two wings each so there’s still 10 left for us to have with tomorrows dinner.

How was the weather in your area today? I’m pretty sure most of the Northern States and Canadian provinces had fairly nice weather today.

A lovely day for a walk

February 26, 2009 by Tricia

Midnight, my Labrador Retriever, and I took advantage of the nice weather earlier today and took a long long walk.

We were supposed to have a warmer than normal day that was filled with snow, rain and then showers, but to my surprise we didn’t get the bad weather – only the nice warmer than average temperatures. Not that 6 Celsius (42 F) is all that warm, but for February, especially after a very cold January, it sure felt nice … Spring-like even.

Midnight in kitchen

I haven’t been walking Midnight as often as I should since I haven’t been feeling all that well the last several months. Oh, Chris walks her – usually twice a day, but if I can walk her at least once a day as well all the better for her. It makes our evenings much more peaceful if we have a well exercised and tired dog!

For my own sake I should be out walking her every day as well! It’s good exercise and Midnight tends to pull on the leash (although she’s getting a little better and not dragging us around as much lately) so it’s a fast paced walk if I want to keep up with her!

We walked for 45 minutes this afternoon and then when Chris came home from work we all took another 35 minute walk.

Midnights still up and begging for a rawhide chew, but I expect that she’ll be tired out and want to sleep soon …

don't bug me I'm sleeping

I took this photo a few weeks ago when Midnight was napping on her favorite chair … I don’t think she liked being woken up to a camera in her face.

So … fellow dog owners, do you walk your dog several times a day or have a yard that your dog can get burn some of it’s excess energy off in?

Cold or allergies?

February 24, 2009 by Tricia

Sniffle, sniffle, sniffle … cough, cough … That’s what my days been like. I think I might either be coming down with a cold or else my sniffles and coughing are remnants of the allergic reaction I had on Saturday night thanks to the shrimp that I ate. I’m still patting my self on the back for that great addition to our meal (NOT).

I still have some hives on my face and neck, and I noticed today that the area above and below my eyebrows is a little puffy and red … kind of like I just plucked my eyebrows.

So as I said I’m not sure whether I’m getting a cold or it’s still my allergic reaction that’s making me feel yucky today. Either way, I think that by the time Chris comes home tonight he’s going to find me curled up in our new Sferra sheets that I just put on our bed. All warm and cozy and trying to recover from whatever my body has decided to do to me today.

Hmmm maybe I’ll make myself a hot Toddy later … yeah that will make my raw throat feel better and make me sleepy too.

I hope that you guys are having a better day than I am!
