Early morning appointments

December 16, 2012 by Tricia

I have to get up sooooooo early tomorrow morning! I have a medical test. Yes a medical test. Not an exam .. a darn medical test as in an ultrasound. Why oh why did I have something scheduled so early in the morning, especially the day after I spent a week killing myself studying for my final exam I don’t know but it’s an important test and I have to do it. Sigh.

Even worse, I have all kinds of tests coming in January and February. It’s so strange, just as I started getting healthy enough to return to work I started having all these set backs and now I’m being put through the ringer with a ton of medical tests again. Figures!

I’m also really bad at finding places that I’ve never been to before – well ones that are in confusing areas. The place I have to go to tomorrow is supposed to be near the subway but in a basement area. I have to look for a few landmarks and signs to help me locate the place. It might as well have a Custom signs here sign and I’ll probably miss it .. I’ll probably get lost! LOL Which means I’m going to have to leave even earlier just to make sure that I make it there on time, just to allow some “getting lost time”.

Do you ever get lost when you’re trying to find a place that you have to be? I mean everyone gets lost every now and then but I mean trying to find some little office on a tiny little street? That will be me tomorrow morning!

Finally finished my exams!

December 16, 2012 by Tricia

I finished writing my last exam! Yeah! No more finals. No more school. I’m done. I just have to wait for my absolute final marks and it’s official – I’ll have completed my courses!

I kind of feel like going out and celebrating. I probably should do that, and I likely will, but first I think I’m going to spend a couple of day just relaxing! It feels so strange not having to pick up a book and study study study all day like I’ve been doing for the last three months straight. I almost don’t know what to do with myself!

I’d better watch it .. with all this new free time on my hands I might start shopping on the internet and end up with a houseful of Beaver Cowboy Hats or something crazy! LOL

Did you or someone you know just finish writing exams? Are you or they relieved? Tired? Happy it’s over?

Musical interludes

December 14, 2012 by Tricia

My husbands been playing his guitar a lot more often lately. He’s always played his guitar a lot, but as I said he’s playing more and more these days.

He has an obsession with Led Zeppelin recently. I don’t know why, but he’s been trying to figure out Kashmir on his acoustic guitar again. I know he figured it out several years ago but I think he forgot that he figured it out so he’s at it again.

I really don’t mind him playing guitar. I love it actually .. except, the only time he plays it is when I happen to be concentrating on something, like say when I’m studying for a big final exam for example. Sigh … He just had to look something up on Youtube last night in the middle of my studying and play along with it.

When he did stop playing guitar last night and I could resume studying he decided to restring his guitar. I noticed that he’s using a new brand of strings – good ernie ball strings. I’ve never seen him use that type before. He must be experimenting!

Hopefully he lets his guitar rest for a couple of days. I really have to have some peace and quite so I can concentrate, but after Sunday evening he can play some celebration songs because my exam will be done and the house can be full of all kinds of sound.

One more exam and then I’m done!

December 13, 2012 by Tricia

I’m so happy to say that I’m almost done my nursing courses! Yeah! One more exam to write and I’m done done done! I’ve done extremely well in my studies too. Considering it’s been some time since I’ve had to study this hard it’s nice to see I was able to get back into the groove and get the kind of marks that I was getting when I originally studied nursing.

Then … with any luck I’ll be back to work some time in the new year. I just have to have a couple more meetings with Human Resources at my workplace and ta da .. back to work for the first time in a while. That will be interesting!

It took a while to getting back into studying all the time but I think I might actually miss it in a few days when I’m done. I was actually thinking that I might take a surgical nursing course sometime in the spring. Break out the scalpel blades! LOL I certainly already have experience in that area from my work in the pain clinic and from having worked with a plastic surgeon but if I take a surgical nursing course I’ll definitely be able to work in the OR in our hospital. In the meantime I hope to get back into the ER. I loved working in the ER.

Ok .. back to studying if I’m going to ace that last exam.

What to Do If Fire Ants Bite You?

December 10, 2012 by Trish

For most people, a fire ant bite is simply just another type of ant bite. It’ll swell up and be itchy for a few hours. After a while, the itchiness goes away and there’s only a red spot left, which also typically resolves after a few days. However, for some people, especially those with compromised or weak immune system, a single fire ant bite could be very deadly. It could not only trigger an allergic reaction and hives, but it could also cause anaphylactic shock.

If you belong to the latter group, what should you do?

Recognize the Symptoms

Some people don’t know if they’re allergic to fire ant bites until one bites them. If you’re unsure, then here are some of the symptoms that you have to watch out for.

One, itching and a red raised spot over the bitten area is very common. However, if the itching spreads to more than just the stung area and you develop hives as well as swelling on any other part of your body, then you’re allergic to it. You also have to watch out for any abdominal cramping as well as vomiting. Some people also even experience extreme nausea with difficulty breathing. Other symptoms include difficulty dizziness, swallowing, and hoarse voice. Swelling of the throat as well as the tongue may also be present.

If no antihistamine medications are given, it could lead to sudden hypotension or low blood pressure, unconsciousness, then ultimately to cardiac arrest. This is called anaphylactic shock, which is very life threatening and can lead to death.

Emergency First Aid Treatment

If an allergic reaction to fire ant bite has been confirmed, it’s important that you immediately take your medication. This can retard the effects of the ant bite and prevent worsening of the symptoms.

However, if you don’t know if you’re allergic to it or not but you’re starting to feel the symptoms, then you need to go to the nearest hospital immediately. Tell someone and have them take you to the hospital. Don’t drive yourself though. Not only are you putting yourself at risk, but you’re also putting other people in danger. When you reach the hospital, you will be given medications to stop the effects. These include antihistamine, epinephrine, and corticosteroids. If the symptoms are severe and you’re having pulmonary problems, then oxygen as well as intravenous fluids may also be given.

Because of the severe allergic reaction that you had from a fire ant bite, you may be prescribed an injectable epinephrine, which you will have to carry with you at all times. You need immediate relief the next time you get bitten by a fire ant.

Dealing with Fire Ants

Just because you have the necessary medications to help with fire ant bites, it doesn’t mean that you won’t do anything to get rid of these pests. Eliminating them from your property is just as important as keeping your medication close. So hire a reputable pest control company who can help you get rid of the fire ant colony effectively, safely, and completely. It’s better if you let a professional company do the job for you than to get rid of them yourself. Not only are they skilled, but they also have the right product and tools.

Jennifer Dallmeyer writes for Insight Pest Solutions. A fire ant bite can be deadly to those with weak immune systems, so it’s important that you get rid of their colony immediately.
