Ottawa Goes to Stanley Cup Finals!

May 19, 2007 by Tricia

Current Ottawa Senators Logo

Whooooooo hooooooo!

Go Ottawa Senators!

My original home town hockey team is going for the cup! Bring it home baby!

I’m a Torontonian now, but my heart will always be with my home town of Ottawa. When the Toronto Maple Leafs play I root for them, but when they play Ottawa I’m rooting for the Sens – even if I have to do it secretly because I’m in a crowd of Leaf fans.

If my parents were alive they would be so happy right now.

Original Ottawa Senators Logo The original Ottawa Senators, who played hockey in Ottawa from 1894 to 1934 until the franchise relocated to St. Louis, Missouri after the 1933/1934 season, won a total of 10 Stanley Cups and were generally regarded as the greatest hockey team in the early days of the sport.

My dad was born in 1919 in Ottawa, and my mom in 1923 in the Ottawa valley. I’m sure they both rooted for the first Ottawa Hockey Club / Ottawa Senators. BTW I was a late late late baby in case you are wondering!

The current Ottawa Senators franchise began in 1992. My parents were thrilled when the Sens came back into the league. The new franchise of course is not really associate with the original Ottawa Senators except for a certificate that was issued by the NHL with the new Senators franchise, proclaiming reinstatement to the league.

Now, as ecstatically happy as I might sound I am sorry to say that I’m not the greatest hockey fan who ever lived. I am however Canadian, and hockey is a huge part of our culture. Hockey is also a huge part of both my families and my husbands culture too.

My husbands brothers two boys come to Canada every summer to train in hockey camps here in the Toronto area because we apparently have the best hockey camps around and if they want to play in the NHL some day this is their best chance at getting there. Get trained by the best to be the best.

My brothers played hockey, and Chris and his brother were excellent hockey players (played with the Gretzky brothers in Brantford) and could possibly have been NHL players too if they had pursued that dream.

Sorry if you’re a Buffalo fan.

Hey, a Canadian team hasn’t won the Stanley Cup in years! It’s time to bring the cup back home to CANADA where it belongs.

Go Sens Go!

Lingerie parties and Lingerie sales

May 19, 2007 by Tricia

Oh oh! I got an email earlier from my niece and she’s having a lingerie party! She’s holding it at the end of May. That could be interesting!

Thinking about lingerie parties just reminded me that for a very short time I once sold lingerie! It was sometime just before I started working as a nurse. I might even have still been in school at the time. I attended a lingerie party that was being held at a friends and some how I ended up getting talked into selling the stuff myself!

It’s kind of like holding Avon or Tupperware parties. You have your samples and you get a friend to hold a party. You go ahead of time and set everything up. What a pain when you have at least two racks of clothing! Then once everyone arrives you do a little presentation and anyone interested checks out the clothing, tries it on and hopefully orders from you.

I did ok at this, but it was time consuming and I felt like I was using my friends. Plus, you may not realize this about me, but I’m actually kind of shy in public. Especially when I’m around a lot of people that I don’t really know. I don’t think I’m as shy now as I used to be … I mean I’m a nurse – I’ve got to speak to strangers and ask them all kinds of personal details about themselves, and I do my darnedest to get a laugh or smile out of people and you can’t be too shy to do that! However, put me in a restaurant by myself to eat a meal or up on stage to give a speech and it’s not pretty!

Anyway, I don’t know if my niece is selling the lingerie or if she’s just holding the party. I wonder if I’ll end up ordering anything interesting?

Grey’s Anatomy – I’m disappointed

May 19, 2007 by Tricia

Did anyone watch Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday night?

I was actually disappointed with the show. You’d think they’d tie it up with only one drama to leave us wondering but it just left me feeling kind of sad. There’s just to too much drama in this show. I’m afraid to say that I think I’m starting to not like the show.

I’m sure that’s not how the creators wanted us to feel at the end of Season one.

So George won’t be going off to another hospital since he didn’t pass his intern exam. Ok that’s good, but if he didn’t pass his intern exam and doesn’t seem to want to do the program all over again where does that leave him – and us?

Izzy’s being her wishy washy self. Trying to hold back on George so that he can continue to be with Calle, but then right at a crucial moment she tells him that she’s in love with him. This is after George and Calle decided that they’d try to have a baby … so where does that leave both George and Calle, and George and Izzy. Frankly I don’t really care. As long as George stays in the program.

Then we find out that Derek was offered the job as Chief but he turned it down? Wasn’t that why he came to the Seattle Grace in the first place? So Calle will now be the head of the hospital. Hmmmm Baily isn’t happy about that, not one bit.

Speaking of Baily, both she and Addison were pretty much their normal selves. They didn’t have as much drama going on as the rest of the group so I don’t have a whole lot to say about the two.

The only real semi-happy ending is that it looks like the Chief and his wife might get back together. Yes they lost their baby, the one that the chief didn’t even know he was about to have, but his caring attitude towards his estranged wife might have pulled them back together. I guess we’ll see how that goes next season.

And what’s with Derek pulling back from Meredeth? She’s been trying, but I guess not hard enough. When Derek finally told her that he’s in for the long haul as long as she is, she made an excuse to end the conversation. Something tells me that she is going to end the relationship. You know what? I don’t really care about that relationship either. They’ve been back and forth so much that they’ve lost me. I don’t mean I’m confused, I just mean I don’t really care anymore. They’ve lost their magic because the creators can’t decide what to do with them. Focus people!

Who else … Alex and Ava or Rebbecca? Nah … if something was going to happen between them it should have happened at least two shows ago. They lost me on that one too. I j u s t d o n ‘ t c a r e.

Burke and Christina! What a heart breaker! I really thought they were going to make it. I loved the vows that Burke quoted during the surgery he was performing. I knew that any of the women in the room would have married him with those vows! Wow. Let me fan myself off – it’s hot in here. What I don’t understand is why he gave up at the end. Christina was trying. Yes she could have been more positive, but she was trying. She knew she’d be happy when that darn marriage was over.

Meredith kept saying throughout the show “Christina you’re going to do it right?”, “we need you to make it”, “We need this” … I think she wasn’t just talking about Christina and herself … I think she was talking about the show too. Now that that relationship has failed too … well the show just seems like a failure to me.

Well, I guess you now know what I really thought about the season finale … what did you think? Did they lose you too?

Accidently deleted a file? Use active file recovery to get it back

May 18, 2007 by Tricia

Have you ever been working in a program and all of a sudden you either go through a virus attack, formatting, or perhaps the power fails and you lose what you were working on? Maybe you’ve just accidentally deleted a file and couldn’t find out how to bring it back because it wasn’t in your Windows recycle bin?

Now, I know for some of you it’s kind of scary to think about tinkering with your computer either to find a file or to fix a problem. How would you like it if I told you that there’s a program out there called “Active File Recovery” that can easily recover deleted files and folders? Even from an already emptied recycle bin?

I’ll bet it sounds pretty good. Am I right? I mean, I bet there isn’t one person out there reading this post that hasn’t accidentally deleted or lost a file in some way at some time or another.

The program is easy to use, and what’s more its also and efficient data recovery tool when you system has crashed and isn’t bootable. I say that because the Active File Recovery software Enterprise installation package comes with a CD/DVD ISO image that you can burn in order to get a bootable CD or DVD with a lightweight version of Windows Vista that will run in RAM. That’s fantastic because well, you can’t fix your computer and recover your data if you can’t even get it to boot for you! Booting up a crashed system is half the battle isn’t it?

Active File Recovery will also allow you to perform Partition recovery. This means that after you’ve had disk partition loss, or format damage to a partition you’ll be able to repair it with Active File Recovery professional. You can also use the program to recover photographs and other media files, even those deleted from flash memory, or data that has been lost due to formatting a memory card.

The standard, professional and Enterprise packages range in price from $29.95 to $99.00. Corporate licenses are also available if you’d like to use this software for your business. All of the products include free technical support and free updates.

Visit the site and take a look at what this software package can do. If you want to thoroughly check this software out before you purchase a copy you may download a demo copy through the main page of the site.

Has the internet allowed you to consider working from home?

May 18, 2007 by Tricia

I just wrote about the idea of having a home based business and being able to work from anywhere in the world. How nice would that be?

It’s funny though. I was just thinking about how, when I was growing up as a child – the news, books, documentaries, and movies always made it seem that many people would be working shorter work weeks, fewer hours with higher incomes and that many people would be working from home.

I do believe that over the last decade or so that this has become a reality for more and more people.

The internet and advanced communications technology has made it possible for many people to work fewer hours in their place of business, work from home, work abroad and to make good money while doing so.

I think that women have probably had the most luck at taking advantage of the way things have changed with how we work.

I mean, if a woman wants to have children she often must take some time off to recover from giving birth and to care for her new born child. There are still many countries that do not guarantee maternity leave and that a job will still be waiting for a woman when they return from caring for their newborn. I could be wrong but I think even in the US – at least in some states, Maternity leave is not guaranteed. Maternity and or paternity leave is guaranteed here in Canada and that does make it easier for people to have a family and go back to the workforce when their child is a year old.

Women who don’t have maternity leave or who opt to stay at home while their children are young were traditionally left income- less. With the cost of living going up and up it’s hard for any family to not need two incomes.

I know several women who have used the internet to generate an income. Either through coming up with a fantastic website that generates a good income through advertising, or by creating small e-businesses that they can work from home. Some of these women have been inventive too and have come up with new products- often related to children or child care and have started out by selling these items over the internet.

Other women have worked out a deal with their place of employment whereby they are able to do most of their work at home and perhaps only go into the office once a week or less, yet still make the same or almost the same income as when they worked 40+ hours each week in the office.

Prior to the internet – say 15+ years ago, this just wasn’t possible. Yes men and women were still finding ways to make income from home and were being creative entrepreneurs, but there were fewer of them out there than there is now.

How has the internet changed your life? Do you work from home or generate some extra money through work on the internet or through your website or blog?
