More doctors, new meds and Thyroid nodules

April 1, 2009 by Tricia

What an exhausting day!

I had an appointment with a new doctor this afternoon. An Internist. My family doc had suggested I see him over a year ago but delayed referring me until recently. Uh huh … she’s become a dud in the last year or so.

Anyway, I went to see the new doctor, the Internal medicine guy, just to get another set of eyeballs on my Crohn’s case. Nothing has been helping ease my pain and symptoms in the last four years, so as long as I don’t end up having to go through all the tests like yet another colonoscopy, gastroscopy and other tests I’m fine with seeing if this new doctor can help me.

After discussing my medical history and recent symptoms he decided to try me on a different Crohn’s drug. I’m to try it for two weeks and see if I feel any better on the new meds. Of course I probably won’t be able to fill the prescription until the weekend as we go to Costco to fill our scripts these days- it’s cheaper!

I hope this works.

I’m tired though … it’s exhausting seeing a new doc when you have Chronic health problems.

Plus … last week I thought my throat looked a little puffy so when I went to see my pain doctor I had her take a look at my neck and she sent me for an ultrasound. Just as I thought, the right side of my thyroid (the only part of the thyroid I have left since I had the left side removed 19 years ago when I had a tumor with pre-cancerous cells in it!) has lots of solid thyroid nodules in it.

I just got that news yesterday so that’s been worrying me too. I mean, since the last thyroid growths I had had precancerous cells and resulted in surgery I have a feeling that these ones will be precancerous or perhaps even have developed into cancer since my family doc hasn’t been keeping an eye on my thyroid function over the last several years – so I’ll probably end up having surgery to have the rest of my thyroid removed soon too. Biopsies first though …

So now I’m waiting for my family doctor to call me. My pain doctors office, the one who sent me for the thyroid ultrasound, called me yesterday with the results (solid nodules, one more dominant than the others) and said they were faxing the info to my family doctor that day … so why haven’t I heard from my family doctor today? I know she works everyday, but Monday … Grrr … I just want to get started, as in get a referral to an Endocrinologist, and find out how serious these new growths are. Not to mention that I shouldn’t have had new growths since I’ve been on Thyroid replacement therapy for almost 20 years!

The only good news that happened so far today (well other than trying a new medication) is that there was a message on my phone saying that we won a free hotel stay. LOL I’ll have to see if that’s for real or not, but a little good news is nice.

I hope that you had a better and healthier day than I did!

WP_Posts database crashed – HELP!

February 28, 2009 by Tricia

I need some help fixing my husbands blog – Guitar Licks. Today when he visited the site (while I was still sleeping) the blog had error messages stating that the WP_posts database had crashed.

When you visit his site it loads with the WP theme and sidebars, but there’s error messages at the top and a “post cannot be found” message where current posts should be listed on the index page.

Some of the errors state:

ALTER TABLE wp_posts ADD FULLTEXT `yarpp_title` ( `post_title`)

ALTER TABLE wp_posts ADD FULLTEXT `yarpp_content` ( `post_content`)

So I’m assuming this error has something to do with the Yet another related post plugin that I’m using on most of my blogs. This blog is using the plugin version 2.16 and is using WP 2.62.

In the Yet another related posts plugin admin area there was a message that said:

YARPP’s “consider titles” and “consider bodies” relatedness criteria require your wp_posts table to use the MyISAM storage engine, but the table seems to be using the engine. These two options have been disabled.
To restore these features, please update your wp_posts table by executing the following SQL directive: ALTER TABLE `wp_posts` ENGINE = MyISAM; . No data will be erased by altering the table’s engine, although there are performance implications.
If, despite this check, you are sure that wp_posts is using the MyISAM engine, press this magic button:

I clicked on the “magic button” as the plugin seems to be working just fine in all of my other blogs and I ended up with even more errors!

Help!

I’ve looked at the WP database for this blog and the WP_posts table says “in use” and I can’t browse it. I also can’t use the backup plugin in Guitar licks – it’s there and functioning but just hung when I tried to do a back up.

I’ve backed up the whole database using PHPmyAdmin so I have a copy in case something goes terribley wrong. Now I just need to know how to fix it.

Should I just place a check mark on WP_posts and then click the repair function at the bottom of the structure screen in PHPmyAdmin and see if that repairs the problem?

I’m nervous about attempting to fix this as I’ve never had to try to repair a database error before. Any help would be appreciated.

Some posts draw more spam than others

February 21, 2009 by Tricia

Last week I wrote a post about how Chris and I have been trying to eat healthier in the past month. Not that we usually don’t eat good low fat foods or anything, but we really stepped it up in light of Chris’ high Cholesterol.

Well let me tell you … that post has received more spam comments in the past week than any other post I’ve written in the last month!

The comment spammers are all from sites that talk about weight loss, health foods and diet pills. Oh and a few of the spammers seem to be fixated on hamburger for some reason, even though I never mentioned hamburger let alone hamburgers in the original post. Weird.

Do you ever write posts that seem to bring all the comment spammers out of the woodwork? What topics draw the most spammers?

My computer is too full

January 28, 2009 by Tricia

This morning when I started up my computer and opened up my email and browser programs everything started moving really slow. It took Firefox about 10 minutes just to open up and my email program waited about five minutes before it slowly started checking for mail.

At first I thought that maybe my internet connection was really slow. After all it’s been snowing here since late last night (and continues to do so now) and it made sens that the storm might be affecting my connection to some degree.

I don’t think it was my internet connection though … I think it’s my laptop. It’s so full! Even though I move files and digital photographs that I’ve uploaded from my camera off to my other computer every now and then, the hard drive is just too full … either that or I don’t have enough computer memory although at 1 GB of RAM I think that should be enough.

I think sometime in the next few days I’m going to have to go through all the files on the computer and perhaps delete old ones that I don’t need, plus programs that I don’t use too. I’ve got plugins for WordPress stored in folder, themes and so on … now that WP can update plugins so easily I don’t need to have copies of all the free plugins I use stored on my computer.

I’m certain it’s not a virus slowing down my computer. I use Norton Antivirus and regularly scan for viruses. My computer is just well … stuffed!

Have you ever run into this kind of problem? I just don’t know what to do with all my files – ie digital pictures, documents and so on. Maybe what I really need is a bigger hard drive!

Still getting used to Twitter

January 23, 2009 by Tricia

Over the last month and a half my Twitter following has really grown. Of course that’s because I worked at finding people with similar interests to follow and most (not all) followed me back. I also added a “Follow me on Twitter” url to each of my blogs and I think that has helped increase the amount of followers as well. (My twitter url is in the sidebar under Subscribe if you’d like to follow me)

Unfortunately, since I’ve been very sick most of this month, I haven’t really been tweeting .. so I haven’t been greeting my new followers or posting interesting updates. Most of my updates have been about new posts on my husbands and my own blogs.

There’s a few things that I’ve noticed about Twitter that bother me:

1. I’ve had a few people follow me and it seems like they followed and then immediately unfollowed. I was able to tell that they weren’t following me anymore because the amount of people they were following was so low that I could easily check to see if I was listed as being followed by them. So it seems like a few people go ahead and follow maybe 2000 people at once and immediately unfollow most of them as soon as they follow them … Why? No idea but I suspect it’s so that they have a higher following count than the amount of people they are actually following.

When I see those kinds of things I simply don’t follow the person as it seems they are up to no good.

As a rule I tend to follow most people back who follow me unless they are doing things like I’ve described above, have spammy tweets or most of their updates are about topics that I have absolutely no interest in.

2. People that follow you, but haven’t even made one single tweet or if they have they only have a few, but their tweets are all marketing some product. I’m sure if you are on Twitter you’ve come across those marketers that are selling some new affiliate product or some kind of diet or weight loss product … maybe something like Leptovox or similar products?

Sorry, but if you are just marketing a product I won’t follow you back.

3. People that don’t fill out their Bio. If a person hasn’t written very many updates in their Tweet account and they haven’t filled out the Bio or listed a website I have no idea if I want to follow them back. At the very least, if you have a twitter account, please do fill out your website url as that can help potential new followers get a sense of who you are and what topics you might tweet about.

What do you like or dislike about Twitter?
