Save me from the monster!

August 13, 2008 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

Ah! What the heck is that!

It looks like this puppy is afraid of the dinosaur image on the bag doesn’t it? I’m not surprised … the Dinosaur head is bigger than the dog!

I’ll be that puppy would like to do some DNA testing on that dinosaur to find out if the species was a herbivore or carnivore! Actually I’m not even sure that dog is a puppy. it looks like one, but it’s possible that it’s an adult small dog.

I’m being gassed out of my home by a farting dog!

August 9, 2008 by Tricia

Ok, I’ve always thought that my Labrador Retriever puppy might be part goat due to the way she eats grass, but now I’m starting to think that my supposedly purebred lab might have a little Bulldog in her too.

Why? Well this weeks she’s been a farting machine!

She’s never been one to pass much gas. Oh occasionally when she’s squatted to do a movement we’ll hear a little phwtttt, but that’s about it.

She was just lying on the floor sleeping near me a few minutes ago and I actually heard her fart five or six times! Stinky ones too!

We haven’t changed her diet (well other than to eliminate Nutro Natural Choice Large breed puppy food about a month ago due to concerns as several dogs have fallen severely ill or died after eating it lately!) or anything else. The only big change for her is that she went into heat a week ago Wednesday or Thursday (10 or 11 days ago). I’m really starting to think that hormonal changes might be causing her gas.

I wonder if her gas is causing my headache? There’s a little more methane in the air these days – in my home at least! Yes – I still have a headache/migraine – it seems to change in severity so I’m calling it a combo. I’ve had this headache since sometime Monday … about the time Midnights farts really started up. See … there might be a connection.

I wonder if you can give dogs Beano? If you can maybe I could add a few drops to her meals for a day and see if it helped? 😉

Watching my neighbors become thieves!

July 28, 2008 by Tricia

It amazes me how the lure of something sweet has made so many people in my neighborhood become thieves lately.

peach.jpg Our neighbor across the street has a peach tree.

I remember the first year we moved into our house (June 2001) I could see orange blossoms and then what appeared to be some kind of fruit in the tree. I never did investigate what it was as we were so busy renovating that year that I barely had time to look at my own yard let alone the neighbors. However I did see people walking along the street stopping at the house and reefing on the tree branches to pull off what I thought at the time were pretty flowers.

I think growing Peaches is a little iffy in this area. For most of this decade winters here in Toronto have been fairly cold with little snow. I’ll bet that’s not that great for a lot of fruit producing trees as they likely get a lot of winter damage.

You see, I don’t think my neighbors tree has produced any fruit since that summer of 2001. I know I watched for the tree to bloom the following year or two and I didn’t see anything special, nor did I see people in the neighborhood paying particular attention to that neighbors yard.

This past winter we had a ton of snow. I guess the neighbors peach tree liked it because it’s just covered in fruit this year. So much so that there’s peaches all over the sidewalk and half the street in front of the house!

One reason why there are so many peaches on the ground is because at least 20 people a day seem to be stopping off at the house, walking into the neighbors yard and yanking on the branches of the tree.

Most of the people doing this will knock down a number of peaches yet they’ll only take one or two peaches leaving the rest to rot on the ground.

I have no idea if our neighbors mind these peach stealing intrusions, but considering how rough some of the people are on the tree I think I’d mind if it that tree was in my yard. Plus they have to clean up the mess that the thieving neighbors left behind.

raccoon.jpg The raccoons are having a great time in the peach tree too. I have to be careful each night when I bring my puppy outside to do her business as the last few days I’ve seen several raccoons prowling around.

Of course when I’ve watched they eventually head over to that peach tree, climb up and then start throwing peaches down onto the neighbors recycling bin. Then the raccoon will climb down and go over to where it’s peaches landed and eat them right by the neighbors back door under their security light. Smart eh? At least the raccoons hand pick their fruit and then eat what they took off the tree unlike their human counterparts!

If you had a neighbor with a fruit tree and you wanted some of the fruit would you just help yourself when the neighbor didn’t seem to be around or would you wait and ask permission to take some of the fruit?

She loves sticks, water and food!

Midnight in her new favorite place – The Beach!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen her any happier than when she’s in the water with a stick to fetch and other dogs to play with, she just loves it.

Well ok … when she’s eating or offered a treat she’s just as happy. It’s a very close tie, too close to call.

Oh and the last time we were at the beach (last weekend) there were a number of wind and Kite surfers there. Man those guys are built! They don’t need any kind of bodybuilding supplements with the workout they get on the lake. We had a hard time keeping Midnight away from the kites that came down close to shore!

Another day at the beach

July 19, 2008 by Tricia

I’m so tired right now.

Earlier today Chris and I took Midnight to Petsmart to get some dog food and to get some new toys. Midnight’s a big chewer so she’s going through her toys fairly fast. I wish we didn’t have to keep getting her so many toys, but it’s better for her to chew on something like a toy than my stairs or the living room table leg like she has done in the past!

It was another hot day here in Toronto so we decided to take our Lab to Cherry beach so that she could cool off in the lake. I guess we were there for a few hours. Midnight had a great time playing with one of her new toys in the water (an orange training dummy) and did her best to keep the other dogs from stealing her toy. Most of the other dogs that were at the beach today weren’t big swimmers so Midnight was able to keep her toy to herself by swimming further away from shore than the other dogs dared to go.

She had a great time but I still think she had a better time two weeks ago when we first took her to the lake for a swim.

We’re all tired after our day out. Midnight is crashed out on our lazy boy chair. Chris is lying on the love seat and I’m stretched out on the couch. Midnight loves lying on the furniture – especially where ever we were just sitting. I really have to check out some furniture stores or pet stores to see if they have any dog style couches as I’m sure she’d love to have her own piece of furniture. She’d still steal our favorite spots too I’m sure!

It’s supposed to be warm here again tomorrow but it’s also supposed to rain a lot so I guess it’s good that we got outside to do some fun things today.

What did you do today? Did you spend any time outside? Do anything fun?
