The Food Fairy

January 3, 2009 by Tricia

I swear that my Labrador Retriever, Midnight, believes in the Food Fairy.

Oh sure she knows where food comes from … you know, the top of the fridge (dog cookies), the fridge, the dog food bin under the table, the kitchen counter (mmm carrots!), occasionally our plates (tender pieces of chicken breast), and of course the kitchen cupboards.

Still, she’s convinced that there’s some other magical place that food comes from … I’m sure of it.

Why?

Well, you see, whenever Chris or I take her outside for a walk the first thing she does when she comes back in the house is to run into the kitchen to check her food bowl. Sometimes she actually finds food in her bowl and I’m sure she must wonder where the heck it came from … hence the reason I think my dog believes in the Food Fairy.

When food magically appears in her bowl what actually happened is that Chris or I stayed in the house and perhaps ate a granola bar while the dog was out and then placed the crumbs in her bowl. Or maybe I was preparing dinner when Chris took her out and I placed some veggie scraps (piece of tomato, carrot, cucumber etc) in her bowl as a surprise.

Ever since she started receiving these magical food offerings, which happen very rarely I might add, she’s always made a habit of checking her food bowl every single time she comes back in from outside.

Does your dog believe in the food fairy too?

BTW I’m still waiting for the money fairy to make a surprise visit to our house!

Dogs don’t make good Christmas ornaments

December 25, 2008 by Tricia

I just wanted to take a moment to wish all of my visitors and regular readers a very Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays.

I hope that you’re able to spend some time with close family and friends during the holiday season.

Now remember … don’t decorate the dog (or cat). They don’t make good Christmas ornaments …

Even if they are awfully cute!   That’s one sad looking dog though, isn’t it?

We’ll be spending some time with the in-laws today. Chris’ brother came up from Chicago with one of his sons so we’ll be getting together with the gang for a Christmas meal and at some point over the next few days we’ll have a house full of guests!

I have to admit that over the last few years – since I’ve been so sick (with Crohn’s) and since losing both of my parents I don’t have a lot of Christmas spirit. However I try to make the best of it and try to cherish time with friends and family. That’s what the holidays are for, right?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Keeping a dog can be expensive!

December 15, 2008 by Tricia

When we got our Labrador Retriever a little over a year ago I knew we’d have some extra expenses, but I guess I didn’t take into account just how much extra having a dog costs.

The first few months were the most expensive as we bought a crate to keep her in at night, got a dog bed to use inside the crate, experimented with a few different types of food (she was sick when we got her too so we had extra medical expenses too), puppy training classes and we also went through several dog toys as we tried to find ones that wouldn’t be destroyed within minutes! We’ve also tried several different leashes and harnesses in our effort to get her not to pull so much when we take her out on walks.

midnightonporch I guess that’s what happens when you are a first time dog owner, eh?

These days The biggest expense in relation to keeping Midnight is her food and toys. She obviously needs food and we feed her with a higher grade dog food – no chemicals, natural ingredients as we’ve found that’s the only kind that works well with her sensitive digestive system.

She also needs toys. Labs are high energy dogs that tend to be chewers. If we don’t provide her with something appropriate to chew on she’d chew the furniture. She’s tried that too, but luckily she hasn’t done too much damage! Yet!

Toys for power chewers (really durable hard toys) are not cheap and Midnight seems to go through her toys pretty fast. We bought her a power chewer bone (foot long nylabone) a month ago and she’s chewed it down to about three inches. So we just got her yet another one on the weekend.

I don’t mind buying her toys if it keeps her busy and keeps my furniture intact, but man, it’s getting expensive! I think I’m going to watch for a sale on durable dog toys and when I see some on sale I’ll buy two or three at a time. That should save us money and keep her occupied!

I was just looking on Buy.com and I found this Ruff Wear Turnip dog toy. It’s a large rubber, turnip shaped toy. It has a hole in it that you could stuff with dog treats (great way to keep dogs happy and occupied for a while), plus the toy bounces like a ball so we could play fetch with her.

I don’t know if it would be all that durable if she were to lie down and start chewing on it, although I think it would last longer than some of the toys we’ve bought her in the past! This toy would probably be best if we were actively playing with her with the turnip toy.

For those of you with dogs, especially large breed dogs … did you find it a little more expensive than you thought it would be after you got your dog? What kind of toys do you buy your dog (especially dogs that are chewers)? I’m just looking for new ideas to keep her occupied and of course anything that’s inexpensive or that might save us some money would be much appreciated.

How would you like to have this wrapped around your finger?

wrapped around your finger

I’m not sure what kind of animal this little creature is, but it sure is cute! Oh and it’s so tiny! I wonder how big it will be when it’s full grown?

Anyone know what kind of creature this is?

Attack Kitten!

December 3, 2008 by Tricia

Wordless Wednesday

pouncing kitten

Ready, set, POUNCE!

I don’t know what the kitten lying on the bed did, but the cute black kitten seems to think it needs punishment. Look at those claws as the kitten flies through the air! I’ll bet that hurt when it landed on the other kitten!

Actually, it kind of looks like the kitten on the bed is about to jump on something itself. Maybe it moved before the other cat had a chance to land?

BTW these are not my kittens, although I kind of wish they were. They’re so cute!
