Basic Cooking Tips for the Novice Cooks

October 28, 2012 by Trish

After many years of being pampered by our moms in a very comfortable atmosphere of home, there will always come a time that we need to be on our own, and this is a reality that seems too scary for many of us. Why not? Finding our own place or raising our own family means having all the responsibilities of keeping our home. And one of the most dreadful activities for many of us is cooking. Cooking and preparing food is something you need to do on a daily basis. Of course you can easily call a restaurant to have some food delivered to your home, but as you know, home cooked food is always better.

What this all means is that we all need, one way or another, to learn how to cook. If you are a beginner in cooking, then it makes sense that you’ve got a lot of hesitations and fears. But as you try and overtime, you will surely be used to cooking and will eventually be able to make healthy and delicious means for your family. Here are some tips you should keep in mind as you begin your journey to becoming a great cook.

1. Purchase only fresh and good quality fruits, vegetables and ingredients.

Whenever you go to grab some groceries, make sure that you only get the freshest produce. Your vegetables need to look plump and fresh, and the leafy ones must not be blackened or wilted. For frozen food items, see to it that there are no signs of ice crystals in the food bags because this means that it already got thawed and put back to the freezer. When buying fruits, be sure you pick those that don’t look plump or too shiny.

2. Never undercook or overcook food.

Food should not be under or overcooked. First of all, eating undercooked food is unhealthy and can even be fatal, especially for foods like beans, meat and sea foods. On the other hand, overcooking your food means losing a lot of the most important nutrition you can get from your food items. If you are referring to some recipes, make sure that you follow the instructions accurately.

3. Avoid pouring too much or too little water.

If you try to notice, there are so many recipes that involve adding some water, which is usually to cook the food, prevent it from burning, or even to simply adjust the food’s consistency. Adding not enough amount of water can lead to burnt food or food that is cooked in the outside but undercooked in the core. Meanwhile, if you add too much water in soups, for instance, you may need to cook the food longer than necessary to reduce the water, and this leads to the overcooking of the food.

4. Use the appropriate size of pans and pots.

When it comes to cooking, size does matter in terms of the pot or pans you are going to use. If you cook a small amount of food in a huge container, you will be wasting gas. And if you fry a huge slice of meat or fish in a small pan, this can result to uneven cooking of the food.

5. What to do after boiling vegetables?

Once you have sliced and boiled your vegetables to perfection, make sure that you can still use the water you used for boiling. You have to know that this water actually contains all the nutrients of the vegetables you have boiled. Thus, it is a pity to just let it go down the drain. Be more creative and find other ways that you may still use the water from the boiled vegetables.

6. Start cooking only once the pan is perfectly heated already.

One basic and important rule in cooking is ‘hot pan cold oil’. If you start pouring the oil when the pan is heated enough, the food you are to fry is less likely to stick to the bottom of your pan. In addition, doing this will retain the quality of your cooking oil, which directly affects the quality of your food as well.

7. See to it that you taste the food while you are cooking.

One of the basic things you will learn even from cooking classes New Orleans is that it is essential that you taste your food every now and then until it is completely cooked. This way, you will know what needs to be adjusted, like maybe you need to add more water or salt or perhaps you are overcooking your ingredients already. Doing this will help you avoid any disaster in the taste and quality of your food.

8. Always have some instant food reserved.

As a novice in cooking, you cannot expect yourself to produce perfect dishes and meals. Of course, learning is a process that naturally takes time and a lot of practice. Failure is also inevitable, so it is something that you need to prepare for.

Knife Skills: What You Can Learn From Cooking Schools

October 25, 2012 by Trish

Admit it. The most impressive parts of any cooking programme are where the TV chef fillets a fish or finely chops a bundle of fresh herbs, showing off their rapid and adept knife skills. Slicing and dicing with speed and accuracy isn’t just extremely useful from a technical, time-saving perspective; it also looks fantastic. Whether you’re looking to save time in the kitchen or simply show off to your date, it makes sense to learn how to use a knife expertly. Whilst it’s possible to read about these methods in cookery books, it’s undoubtedly more effective to get some hands-on experience.

Knife Classes at Cooking Schools

For professional chefs, the ability to wield a knife efficiently is a core skill, being amongst the first assignments they are given in the kitchen. It makes sense, then, that amateur foodies receive some instruction in cutting – allowing them to slice and incise rather than hack and slash. You’ll learn the techniques involved in preparing herbs, spices and vegetables first. Whether it’s potato julienne or carrot brunoise, precisely cut plant matter is an essential part of a well-presented and tasty dish. Once you’ve got this aspect of knife competence under your belt, you’ll be able to move on to meat and fish. This is where the magic happens. Keen students will learn to adroitly portion these staple foods, deboning fish and seeking out the best cuts of chicken or beef. A good knife skill course will also teach you how to select the right knife for each task, and let you know what’s involved in keep them in tip top condition, meaning that you’ll be able to keep a keener edge for longer. If you’re interested in getting to grips with proper knife technique, you’ll want to look for a reputable class – cooking schools in London are probably the best bet at finding high quality suitable courses.

Cooking Schools in London: a Real Experience

A good cooking course will be an adventure that students undertake together. Keen cooks will have the opportunity to make new, like-minded friends as they take part in an interactive learning experience. As you would expect, a knife skills class is very hands-on! The course will be taught by an accomplished professional chef, with the class size kept at an appropriate level so that each student is able to fully benefit from their tutor’s knowledge. As well as specific direction from the head of the class, the teacher will be able to offer individualised hints and tips, ensuring that everybody is able to refine their technique. Everything you dissect will be provided by the school, making the class easy to fit within your timetable – no need to go shopping in advance! What’s more, you’ll get to consume your creation at the lesson’s conclusion alongside your new acquaintances, making it an ideal tasty prelude to a night out.

Sharp Skills

No need to be jealous of those famous chefs anymore. With some interactive teaching provided by one of the many cooking schools in London, you’re sure to impress your friends with your new abilities. Here’s to a fillet-filled future!

How to Host a Holiday Ugly Sweater Party

October 17, 2012 by Trish

Image by TheUglySweaterShop on FlickrPeople have been having holiday ugly sweater parties for years, and for good reason. They’re a ton of fun, and they offer you a chance at a bit of sarcasm during a season that is often dripping with goodness and hope. Think you’re ready to have an ugly sweater party this year? These tips can help.

Invitations

The best ugly sweater parties get a helping hand from the very start with great invitations, and there are a number of great ways to spice up your invite. Whether you choose to go with a sweater shaped invite, a fabric invite, or even a creative e-vite that includes the best pictures of ugly sweaters you can find, make sure that you get as creative with the design as you do with the wording. Don’t forget to include your name, the date and time, and any RSVP info. If you want people to bring food or holiday gifts, be sure to note that on your invite. Don’t forget to go with jazzy text like “The uglier the sweater, the better the party.”

Decorations

Wondering how to spruce up your location for an ugly sweater? Try sweaters themselves. Head to the thrift store and find as many horrible sweaters as you can, then send them to a charity clothes closet at the end of your party. Hang them on the walls or hang a clothes line and make a kind of garland out of them. You could also use knitting needles and creative yarn colors to decorate. Alternately, find as many horrible family photos as you can with ugly sweaters in them, and use those to decorate your location.

Party Food

Choosing the food for your ugly sweater party is very easy. You’ll want to go with items that reflect your theme. Sweater-shaped cookies are a natural. You could also decorate gingerbread men with great sweaters. You may want to think about food that’s already wearing a sweater like corn dogs or pigs in a blanket. You should also consider all of the tacky foods that are just part of the holiday season like fruitcakes.

Games and Activities

What’s a holiday party without a few exciting games? A fashion show is an absolute natural for the ugly sweater party. Be sure to have American Idol style voting, too, as well as a prize for the person with the ugliest sweater. You could also have a relay race where guests have to unravel one of the ugly sweaters you purchased at the thrift store. The winning team could even get a gift certificate to your favorite clothing store. Another relay race idea is to have a pile of ugly sweaters at one end, then have your participants rush to put on all of the ugly sweaters at one end, then take them off at the other end, and start all over again with the other person. You could also have guests decorate the gingerbread men you baked with the ugliest possible sweater and award a prize for that as well.

An ugly sweater party is a great way to get everyone into the holiday spirit this year. With a bit of advanced planning, you could have the holiday party everyone is talking about this year and will remember for seasons to come.

5 Creative DIY Projects on The Budget for Halloween

October 12, 2012 by Trish

Eek! Halloween is almost here. You don’t have a costume, or even an idea! Quick, get on the web for a number of available costumes. Wait. Rather than spend money on a grand costume this year here are some better ideas, how about some DIY Halloween costumes!

Our Jack-O-Lanterns for 05

rather than open your wallet, tap into your creativity. Do you need some help? Consider the following five DIY costume ideas.

1) Roll the Dice It’s a crap shoot finding a good costume at stores. However, your creativity supplies unlimited DIY ideas. Find a large-sized box (one for a large screen television or small refrigerator). Paint the box completely white, adding black dots to make a die. Cut holes in the box for your arms. Depending on the fitting, you could use ‘suspenders’ to hold the box in place. Voila, you have yourself a cheap but extremely creative costume. Go the extra yard and paint your face black and white as well.

2) Blues Brothers The Blues Brothers started out as a skit on Saturday Night Live, making way into a feature film. The brothers are legendary in entertainment and music. As popular as they were, there was not much to their iconic attires of black suits, black hats, and glasses. You’ll need a partner to pull off the effect. Additionally, Dan Akroyd was tall and slender while James Belushi was short and pudgy. If this is not your dimensions, use shoe lifts or a pillow to make your body more befitting.

3) “I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up!” This catchphrase first gained momentum in the 80s. It’s not funny to make light of medical emergencies; yet, the dramatic display of the elderly actor made her an ongoing sensation. All you need to reenact the ridiculous commercial is a piece of sturdy board. Paint the famous scene of the elderly woman on the floor, leaving a hole for your face. Use suspenders or tape to affix the piece of board to your body. It costs virtually nothing; and, it’s highly likely no one else will have thought of anything nearly as clever.

4) Marlboro Man The Marlboro brand wanted to align itself with its consumers, envisioning rustic, tough men smoking the cigarettes. The Marlboro man essentially is a cowboy. Looking as such requires little effort and money. Search for a western-styled shirt, a pair of boots, and preferably well-worn-in jeans. Obviously, you’ll need a cowboy hat to top it all off. Cigarettes (could alternate with candy cigarettes) are optional.

5) Decorations The above ideas address personal costumes; however, many people enjoy dressing their homes for the fall holiday. Decorations are expensive, yet often pale in comparison to homemade attempts. It’s really about investing time rather than money. Do you have an afternoon to invest into the project? Of course you do; if you ‘make’ the time. Many common household items and cheap arts and crafts can transform your house’s interior and exterior into a creepy crypt. Think about using cardboard cutouts for tombstones, purchasing fake webs to hang from trees and bushes, hiding a cassette player outside that plays eerie sounds and music, and best of all, dressing up as a scary character for ‘trick or treaters’! Creativity always wins out against money. It’s just a matter of investing your thoughts rather than your money. Take the time to mind the above suggestions; or, take these and make modifications of your own!

Find Yourself a Hobby and Enjoy Its Amazing Benefits

October 11, 2012 by Trish

Hobbies are considered by many as the activities that only those with laid-back and quiet lives can afford to have. The truth, however, is that the people who live busy and stressful lives are the ones who need hobbies or past time activities. The reason for this is that hobbies can bring huge positive changes to a person’s life. Here are some great things you can get from having a hobby.

You get to enjoy your free time.

Having a hobby gives you a chance to free yourself from all the pressures and stress of everyday work and hectic schedule. If you feel overwhelmed by all the responsibilities you have, you must be finding it hard to find the time or even allow yourself to take a break from all your tasks to simply sit and relax. But once you find a hobby to enjoy, it will be much easier for you to have a purposeful break. This way, you won’t feel as if you were just sitting around and wasting your time.

You can experience some positive stress.

If you are someone who isn’t overly stressed and you feel that you are actually under-stimulated, you will find that hobbies are actually a good source of stress. This is referred to as the healthy and positive kind of stress that can make us feel more excited about our lives. For instance, you feel that staying home the entire day is uninspiring and dull, you can attend cooking classes to give you a sense of self-worth and enjoyment. You will do this without any pressure, so you get to be productive without having too much to stress about.

You get the chance to meet people.

Many hobbies are in the form of group activities, which can help you become more sociable. Out of your hobbies, you can join knitting circles, golf enthusiasts and even fiction writing group. Such types of hobbies that let you have connections with other people can definitely boost your social life and can bring fun to your daily life as well.

Hobbies are a form of gratification.

According to psychologists, gratifications are meaningful activities that can bring fun and meaning to a person’s life. These activities come with some kind of challenge that will let you put to use all your great personal skills. Through your hobbies, you will have a sense of flow where you can lose track of time and escape the stressors of everything around you. As a result, you will give yourself a huge favor and eventually enjoy a more positive and healthy lifestyle and well being.

Hobbies protect you against burnout.

Especially for hardworking people, being stressed and pressured are inevitable. This is why these types of people are the ones who really need to form hobbies more. By engaging in some interesting and worthwhile pastimes, they will have something to look forward to and something that will free them from all the worries at work. According to some research, those people with high-demand jobs are vulnerable to burnouts. As a result, they tend to feel that sleep is the only way to rest and be free from any worries. However, still as indicated by the research, these people do not really have proper rest even as they sleep. But by doing an activity that is not at all related to their work, they turn out to be less fatigued and can benefit from good quality sleep. Through this also, they feel more enthusiastic about their work and positive about their lives in general.

Hobbies are beneficial to your health and well-being.

There was a study conducted about the relationship between health and hobbies. According to this study, those people who take the time to engage in any physical or leisure activity even for just 20 minutes in a day tend to be less likely to suffer from too much fatigue. In addition, participating in such leisure and fun activities help lower blood pressure, reduce weight, and increase physical function. These activities also were associated with very high levels of positive mindset and considerably lower levels of pessimism and depression.

You can build better relationships with your loved ones.

So much has been said about the psychological and health benefits of having a hobby. If you come to think of it, all these can lead to one great thing – better relationship with people. You can just imagine when you reach the point when you feel so good about your body and your life as a whole, you can definitely spread this feeling to your loved ones. You will surely find more reasons to spend quality time with them, and every minute you spend will be filled with love and happiness. At the end of the day, you will realize that what it simply takes to have a fuller and happier life is to address your own need of having time to enjoy and live life to the fullest.
