Thirteen Things about TRICIA in the GARDEN

1…. I think I sprained my ankle today. It hurts when I walk on it or move it but it’s not swollen or bruised. Yet.

2…. I did it running after a RAT!
3…. Yep, it seems we have a few Rats in the neighborhood. Probably some human ones, but I’m talking about the cute brown ones.
4…. Yes I actually thought the rats were kind of cute compared to the pigeons that flock to our yard anyway, at least the rats are smart.
5…. I had thrown some left over French fries into the backyard for the birds or squirrels to eat. They like their junk food too. Apparently rats also love French fries.
6…. It was amusing to watch the rat in the middle of the yard, French fry in mouth, pat at one of the small birds (House Wren?) with it’s paws as if telling it to get away from it’s fries.
7…. When I’d had enough of seeing the rat sneaking back and forth from yard to hidey hole in the neighbors yard I ran at it to try to scare it and that’s when I twisted my ankle.
8…. Now, I suppose we’ll have to do something to get rid of the rats. One neighbor suggested rat traps, but my hubby and I are such animal lovers I can just see us looking at a dead animal in a trap and bursting out in tears at what we’d done. Any suggestions?
9…. Speaking of neighbors, my husband met one of ours on the street when she was bringing her child home from daycare and invited her into the backyard. I don’t know why but I dislike this woman. There are very few people in this world that I dislike, only three that I can think of at this moment, and for some unknown reason she’s one of them. The other two I have good reason to dislike.
10…. This neighbor brought her 20 month old daughter into the yard and let her loose. I was the one running after the kid, worrying that she’d fall on our landscaping stones and hurt her head. Mom was too busy rattling off why she’d been fired from her last job to care.
11…. Then the little girl started trying to pick the flowers. Fine I don’t mind a few damaged flowers or even some of my flowers being picked.
12…. But the little girl also started EATING the flowers! Luckily they were tulip petals, which I was pretty sure at the time were non-toxic, but did check on again on the computer when they finally left. It was kind of funny because the little girl was chewing on them like they were the greatest snack, however, I kept cautioning the mom to not let her eat the flowers as I wasn’t sure if they were safe or not.
13…. Now I’m hoping that I’m right and the tulip petals were fine and that the child is fine … otherwise I’m sure this woman wouldn’t hesitate to sue. Aarrrgh! Stupid people!

Mothers Day

May 2, 2006 by Tricia

Valencia Rose from my Garden

Mother’s Day is just around the corner on May 14th. It is a day where we take some time to thank the person that brought us into this world and/or cared for us when we were young, and even when we are grown up. How do you plan to celebrate the occasion? Are you a mother who is expecting a treat or gifts? Or do you plan to visit your own mother and make her day special?

My mother has unfortunately passed on, and this day makes me somewhat sad. When my mother was alive though, we would always try to get together with her and either cook her a wonderful dinner or take her out someplace special. I miss her, but I will remember all the good things about her on that day.

My husbands mother is still around. I’m not sure what we are doing yet. I know we are all getting together the following weekend since my husbands brother is coming for a visit from Chicago. I’m looking forward to that. Tim is so fun to be around. I’m sure we’ll get into some kind of trouble! He likes to party.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on Mothers day and on how you plan on celebrating it.

Flowers are always a great gift idea for Mothers day – I found a great site on the internet with exceptional selections of Mothers day flowers and Mothers day gift ideas called DotFlowers. Their Monticello Rose Bouquet or Abundant Glory Arrangements are beautiful and sure to impress.

I remember reading a post a while back that argued that not all mothers deserve to have this special day in honor of them because they are not or were not good mothers. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this as to why your mother does or doesn’t deserve this special day of honor.

May the Force be with you

May 1, 2006 by Tricia

I’ve spent the last three days with my immediate family and I’ve come to the realization that we all have a very unique sense of humor, and it seems that my niece has inherited it. Petra and Kris- First Dance

My very first niece got married this weekend.

It was the first marriage of a niece or nephew from within my family, the first from her mothers side, and from her new grooms family too, so it was very special. But of course all weddings are special.

I really wasn’t sure how I’d feel about her wedding.

I hadn’t mentioned this before but for some reason I really don’t like weddings.

I think that’s probably fairly rare for a woman to feel that way, but I do. I don’t know why I feel this way either, but weddings tend to make me feel sad.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m very happy for Petra and I’m sure she’s going to have a long and happy marriage because her new husband is just the nicest man and head over heals in love with her.

I was also very excited to be going to her wedding, but I think I thought I’d feel sad at her wedding. My parents have both passed away in the last few years and I thought this would contribute to my emotions, because I know they would have loved nothing more than to see our beautiful Petey get married.

But I was wrong! I had the best time.

I was a bit emotional when I first saw her walking down the aisle on my brothers arm, but it was pure happiness for her. She was just gorgeous too! I don’t have any children of my own yet, and due to my illness there is a chance that I never will. So I suppose I feel that all my nephews and nieces are my babies too.

Maybe that’s why this wedding didn’t make me feel sad, and instead made me feel so happy. A very special person within my family was starting life with her new husband.

The wedding took place outside at a lovely Country Club. It was sunny but the wind was a little cool. The bride and groom and wedding party stood on a rocky outcropping near a very large pond or perhaps a small lake. Swans swam in the water nearby, and Canadian geese flew in the background. It was as close to perfect as any wedding can be.

I uploaded several pictures to my flickr account if you’d care to view them.

Regarding that unique sense of humor gene that my niece must have inherited? Guess what music they played at the end of the ceremony as they walked down the aisle as husband and wife? The theme from Star Wars! It was the last thing anyone expected and it was hilarious!

Petra didn’t tell her mother before hand what music was going to be played because she was afraid her mom would try to veto it, and she’s probably right.

She’s been a Star Wars fan since she was a child. I’m not sure how she gained her interest since the first three movies were already several years old by the time she was born. Either way, as odd as the music was to hear at the end of a ceremony – it was fitting in it’s own way.

The reception took place at the same Country Club as the ceremony. We were treated to a huge assortment of hor’dourves while the wedding party had photographs taken. Mussels, squid, pastries, salads and on and on. Then we sat down to a dinner that started with a lovely salad, then an entree of roasted chicken, fillet Mignon and vegetables, followed by French pastries.

Near the end of the evening a small room was set up with several types of deserts, assorted fruit and a chocolate fountain. I never made it into the room so I’m not sure what all the goodies were, but I heard they were delicious.

I danced all night. The music was great. I think everyone except my own husband danced that night.

I also felt pretty good up until just before midnight. By this I mean I didn’t feel totally healthy all day, but I felt well enough to let go and enjoy myself. I’m glad that I was able to enjoy myself for most of the evening because I think I really needed to have some fun.

Then midnight rolled around and my tummy decided it had, had enough, so after some lengthy good-byes we left and got back to our hotel room by about 1 a.m. The reception ended at 1:30 anyway, so we didn’t miss much.

The wedding cake wasn’t really a cake at all. Another twist – It was perhaps a couple hundred cupcakes layered on top of each other to look something like a three or four tiered wedding cake.

The following day, Sunday, the immediate family went to my brother and sister-in-laws home. The new bride and groom joined us for brunch and the opening of the gifts.

If you look at the pictures that I uploaded you’ll see some with the bride and groom surrounded by gifts. Many of the gifts in the background of the picture were from the showers that were held prior to the wedding and were already opened, and then there were the wedding gifts.

One of the best gifts was perhaps from my brother Terry and his wife Rene, who live in Vancouver. They gave the new couple a week from their time-share to use for their honeymoon. I thought that was sweet.

Now for the oddest part. The new couple purchased a house about two years ago. A house that was to be built in a new housing development. The home was supposed to be finished by September 2005, then the closing date was pushed back to December, then I believe May 2006. Well … it’s still not finished. The new completion date is sometime in July!

I suppose it doesn’t make too much sense for the new couple to rent a place for only a couple of months before their home is complete (if it ever is), so they are going to continue on as they have been doing for the last year. By this I mean the groom will continue to live at his parents house, and my niece Petra will continue to live at her parents home.

Petra would occasionally go to Kris’ parents and stay there for a few days each week, and I guess that will continue, but until their home is complete they will not officially be living together as a couple.

This just doesn’t seem right. I can see a delay of perhaps as much as two months for a newly built home, but 10 months or more? No way.

I’ll save my tale of this evenings events for tomorrows posting.

Grilled Veggies

April 28, 2006 by Tricia

Shelly from the Dramedy of Life posted about buying her first grill a few weeks ago and I mentioned to her that I had a great grilled veggie recipe that I’d be willing to give to her. Well, she wrote to me on Wednesday asking for it, and I thought I might as well share it with the rest of you since it’s BBQ season.

I love grilled veggies and this recipe is very good! In fact, as I wrote it out for her the other day I was craving it so bad that I had decided to make it on Thursday.

Unfortunately I didn’t. After our dinner on Wed. I started having so much abdominal pain I was sure I had another bowel obstruction, and I’m sure that I do or that it’s resolving. Great- just in time for the wedding that I must go to on Saturday. I ended up staying up all night in pain wondering when I’d end up going to the hospital, and didn’t fall asleep until 10 am Thursday morning. I’m still in pain but it’s not as bad right now as it was. The grilled veggies will have to wait until perhaps next week as they are too chunky for my delicate system right now. I’m going to be sipping liquids at that wedding- I just know it. BTW I think it was the BBQ steak we had for dinner that did it.

Anyway, on with the recipe:

I got this out of The Presidents Choice Barbecue cookbook. Presidents choice is a local no name brand of product sold in one of our local grocery stores (loblaws, Ziggy’s). You might have Presidents Choice brand items in your stores in the U.S. – I’m not sure, but it’s originally Canadian.

Grilled Mixed Vegetables with Dijon Vinaigrette:

  • 8-10 Jumbo Mushrooms for stuffing, or large white mushrooms
  • 8-10 shiitake mushrooms
  • 1 small zucchini
  • 1 small eggplant
  • 1 each red and yellow pepper
  • 10 to 12 thin asparagus spears
  • 1 red onion
  • 12 cloves of fresh peeled garlic

Dijon Vinaigrette:

  • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2 cloves fresh peeled garlic, finely chopped
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons fresh coriander (or arugula)
  • 3/4 extra virgin Olive Oil
____________________
  • Slice jumbo and shiitake mushrooms into halves or quarters, depending on size.
  • Cut zucchini and eggplant in half lengthwise, then cut into 1/4 to 1/2 inch slices.
  • Cut red and yellow peppers in half. Remove seeds and cut each half into 4 strips.
  • Trim course ends off asparagus, then blanch in boiling salted water for 30 seconds; drain.
  • Slice top off onion and peel, keeping root end intact. Slice onion in half vertically through the root. Cut each half into quarters, cutting through roots so wedges hold together.
  • Blanch garlic in salted boiling water for 4 minutes. Drain.
____________________
  • Place vegetables in grill basket and grill over medium-high heat, turning periodically, for 15 to 20 minutes or until tender and lightly charred.
  • Meanwhile, prepare Dijon vinaigrette: Mix together vinegar, mustard, garlic and coriander. Gradually whisk in olive oil until thickened.
  • Add enough vinaigrette to vegetables to coat. (Refrigerate any leftover vinaigrette for other use). Toss lightly and serve at room temperature.
  • Makes 4 to 6 servings.

I usually prepare the Dijon Vinaigrette when I’m preparing the veggies. I’m not a huge mushroom lover, but hubby is, so I tend to use less mushrooms than the recipe calls for. I also tend to use two or three medium to small zucchini’s since we both enjoy grilled zucchini. Sometimes I use the eggplant, sometimes I don’t- it depends whether others who are joining us like it. I also substitute green peppers if necessary since the colored peppers are usually more expensive. I suppose you could use other types of peppers on the grill if you wanted to as well. maybe some slightly spicy ones? I sometimes add cherry or tiny Tom tomatoes and grill them as well. Mmmm grilled tomatoes. Now I’m getting hungry.

I really like asparagus so I often use a whole bundle. I steam them in the microwave for 15 to 30 seconds to soften them as this achieves the same effect as blanching in boiling water. I do that with the garlic as well … but I think blanching them in boiling water for 4 minutes is less smelly and might have better effect. You may not have had grilled garlic before, but it’s one of our favorites- the garlic is so mild after it’s been steamed or blanched and then grilled. It’s sooooo good. Yes, I do put more cloves in than the recipe calls for, sometimes as many as two whole clusters of garlic!

This recipe is a big hit at outdoor BBQ related parties, but works well for indoor parties too if it’s made in advance. I’ve used it at my own dinner parties and I’ve prepared, and even cooked it, before hand to bring to others homes. People always come back for extra helpings.

Leftovers – tastes great cold. Can be used in a grilled veggie Sandwich, or you could even used the leftover grilled veggies and Dijon Vinaigrette in a cold pasta salad.

If you think you might like grilled veggies try it this weekend. I’m sure it will become one of your favorite recipes too.
