A lot of sound for a mini-speaker – Bassboomz Review

March 8, 2013 by Tricia

I’ve been listening to quite a bit more music lately. It’s not just because I’ve suddenly become interested in new musicians or bands, no, it’s because I’ve been lucky enough to have been given some very cool music related items to review. Do you remember the Bassbuds Earbuds that I was given a couple of months ago? Well the same company that makes them – BassBuds, sent me a BassBoomz mini-speaker and let me tell you, I love it.

Bassboomz

The Bassboomz mini-speaker arrived about a week and a half ago and I’ve been putting it through it’s paces testing it out in various ways. The Bassboomz mini speaker is only 2 inches high but for a mini speaker it can broadcast sound quite a distance. I was quite impressed by both the quality of the sound and it’s volume/depth levels.

The speaker is meant to be used with smartphones, mp3 players, laptops and tablets. I quickly and easily connected my brand new blue Bassboomz speaker to my Nokia smartphone via Bluetooth in a matter of seconds and moments later music was pouring out of the speaker in rich bass tones. The volume was quite loud when it first came on and that really startled me. It also impressed me because I really did not expect this mini speaker to be able to produce such volume. At full volume I’d be able to hear the music playing out of this speaker in my living room from my bedroom upstairs! Mind you I have a small house, but still, that’s loud! Oh and at full volume they say the speakers battery will last about 4 or 5 hours and at 70% of the volume you should get 5 to 7 hours of battery life.

I connected the BassBoomz speaker to my laptop via Bluetooth and it worked seamlessly as well.

The speaker is designed with an innovated Bass Expansion system for an impressive volume to size digital amplifier. This is what gives it those deep rich bass tones. The speaker twists closed for easy transport, but with a simple twist and release the bass expansion system in activated.

If you’re fortunately enough to have two of these lovely wireless mini-speakers you’ll find that you can use two speakers on one device. That’s right, dual connectivity is available. Two times the fun!

I can easily see myself using my BassBoomz in various ways! I’m picturing taking it to the beach this summer or using it outside in the backyard when I’m gardening or just simply spending time on the patio enjoying a beautiful summer day. It’s small enough to easily throw in my purse.

If you’re interested in learning more about the BassBoomz minispeaker visit the BassBuds Website. You might also be pleased to know that you can save 50% off the retail prices of a BassBoomz minispeaker during the month of March by using the voucher code – BBZ649106

8 Great Things You Should Do Before Adding A Puppy To Your Home

March 8, 2013 by Trish

TwoCuteBeagles

American author Gene Hill once said, “Whoever said you can’t buy happiness forgot little puppies.” If you’ve ever enjoyed inhaling puppy breath while being licked in the face by a wriggling bundle of fur then you understand this statement firsthand.

Getting off on the right paw with your new pet is important. You want to shower it with love and affection so that it will provide you with a lifetime of loyalty. But without properly preparing, instead of a dream dog you could be on the road to a doggone difficult situation.

Perhaps you are reading this article because you are planning to get a new dog, or because you just recently added a new dog to your home. Either way, what an exhilarating time for your family! Everyone is excited and wants to pitch in to help, right?

Use These Tips for Success

As the head of household, it’s your job to take ahold of your family’s momentum and direct its energy into the following tasks. These tasks will help provide your puppy with a seamless transition from littermates to human pack family.

1. SUPPLIES – You will need more than a plaid raincoat and rhinestone-studded collar for your pet. Metal or ceramic water bowls, a non-retractable leash, an ID tag, and a crate are all essential items. You will also want to use the same brand of dog food, and if you must switch then make a gradual transition.

2. RESPONSIBILITY – Since everyone in the family is so eager to help out, now is the perfect time to divvy up the chores with an official family chore chart. You can even use the chart as an incentive to reward younger family members who are old enough to receive an allowance.

3. RULES – The new puppy isn’t the only one who will need some ground rules. Make sure your family knows whether or not the puppy is allowed on the furniture. Dogs and kids both need consistency, so establishing rules for a new pet has dual benefit if you have children at home.

4. PUPPY-PROOFING – Keep small toys off the floor, because they could pose a choking hazard. A good rule of thumb (rule of paw?) is that if an object is not safe for a toddler child, then it is not safe for a dog of any age.

5. CRATE TRAINING – Get some kind of a kennel or crate for your dog. This will help with bedtime, separation anxiety, and potty training. Make sure the crate is size-appropriate, because having a crate that is too large is as bad as having one that is too small.

6. HOUSEBREAKING – Potty training your new puppy not only keeps your house clean, but it also keeps your family healthy because dog feces could carry harmful bacteria. For this reason, make sure you use poop bags to properly clean and dispose of outdoor waste as well.

7. REGISTER – Registering your dog with the proper community offices, like city hall or county department of agriculture office, proves that you are a responsible pet owner. It does not cost a lot of money, and when you attach the registration tag to your pet’s collar then it could help your pet become found if it is ever lost.

8. FENCING – Fence in your backyard, if possible. Sometimes standard fencing is not an option, for example on rental properties. In this case a PetSafe wireless fence is a great alternative. It allows your pet to freely explore the yard around your home with less risk of running away.

According to the Regional Center for Animal Control and Protection in Roanoke,  Virginia (www.rcacp.org), you should keep a good, current picture of your pet. After all, there is little use in having everyone look for your 3-year-old dog based on a photo if the only picture you carry is of how he looked as a puppy.

Getting Advice from the Professionals

If you don’t already have a vet in mind, ask your local animal shelter for recommendations. It is important to get your new puppy to the vet in that first week after bringing her home for the first time. The initial wellness exam can help the vet better detect problems that could pop up at a later time.

Another appointment you will want to make is for a grooming session. Some professional groomers offer a puppy package with discounted prices for the first year of the puppy’s life. This gets your dog used to toenail clippings and other necessary procedures for personal hygiene.

Choose The Perfect Greenhouse Suited To Your Garden And Budget

March 6, 2013 by Trish

You have many different possibilities when it comes to choosing a greenhouse, you can choose to start small with an inexpensive starter greenhouse or a larger greenhouse that is created to be the centre of your garden. It can be difficult trying to decide what greenhouse kit is perfect for you, to give you a little help, read on to help try and discover the perfect greenhouse kit for your plants and lifestyle.

Look At the Variety of Greenhouse Kits

There are many different styles of greenhouses; this can include different shapes, styles, sizes and materials. You should start by considering the amount of plants you want to include in your greenhouse and whether you want to grow this amount in the near future. Your greenhouse should not be crammed full of plants, otherwise you will find that they are going to struggle to grow and you will not be getting the full benefits of using a greenhouse.

The light diffusion of greenhouse coverings can differ greatly, with different coverings providing better environments for plant growth. The different styles of greenhouses include glass, plastic and solexx, it is thought that glass and solexx provide the best environment for growth.

If you are just starting out you will probably be better off choosing a plastic greenhouse, this is because they are much cheaper and they can be easily moved so you can find the best place for it in your garden without making any long lasting decisions.

How Long Do You Wish To Grow Your Plants For?

Choosing your greenhouse should depend whether you are completing a short term or long term growth plan. Not all greenhouses will provide your plants for steady growth all through the year, so if you are planning to grow all year round you should be prepared to pay the price for this.

Choose a Greenhouse with Strength and Durability

A good greenhouse should be able to stand up to daily weather and harsh weather without a problem. You should make yourself aware of what potential hazards there are to your greenhouse, this can include falling branches, rocks, debris, wind, rain and snow.

Your greenhouse should be able to withstand all weather situations, to check that you are choosing a good quality greenhouse you should test its abilities by shaking it and spraying hose water directly at it, this will ensure it will not provide you with any problems.

Maintain Your Greenhouse

It is important that you create the time to maintain your greenhouse. In the summer it is likely that a lot of dirt will attach itself to your greenhouse. You should be able to manoeuvre easily around the greenhouse to clean all areas of it successfully.

The Secret Of Great Improvisational Cooking

February 21, 2013 by Trish

never accept an invitation from a stranger unless he gives you candy -Linda Festa

Sometimes you can get bored following the same old recipes, sticking to the same old instructions, obeying every word of the cookery book as if it was law. Sometimes wouldn’t it be nice to break free, go wild, and create some mad new invention?

The risk, of course, is that your mad new invention will taste like wet pants. And it will be so awful that it somehow becomes famous, and they’ll name it after you, and your name will forever be associated with the taste of wet pants. This is the risk that all pioneers must take.

Fortunately, if you master a few simple concepts and skills, you stand a much better chance of creating something that not only doesn’t taste of wet pants, but doesn’t taste like dry pants either, or, for that matter, any kind of undergarment. In fact, it’ll taste good!

Find A Good Base

Once you know how to make a few simple dishes, you can experiment with them. Pizzas are good for this- if you can make a decent pizza base, or a pie crust you can pile pretty much anything you like into the filling or topping and it will probably hold together. The same is true of pancakes- a stack of pancakes with a savoury topping makes for a great, quick meal that leaves plenty of room for trying new flavours.

You can go a step further if you know a basic chicken curry or chili recipe. Once you know how to whip up a decent curry sauce you can start experimenting with different spices, vegetables and meats to create a host of different dishes.

Learn Which Combinations Work

Once you’ve got a good base to work from you need to find a way to figure out which flavours work together. This leaves you plenty of room to experiment with small quantities, but there are a few staples that always seem to work. Lemon and tarragon always work well with chicken. Apple and pork always go together. Lime and shrimp is another time honoured classic.

If you know which flavours work, try experimenting with similar flavours. For instance, if apple and pork go together, will apricot and pork go together? (Yes and it’s delicious.) Have a read through the recipe books to see what surprising flavour combinations can be transplanted elsewhere. For instance, dark chocolate is a popular ingredient in chilli con Carne. However, it can also work well in a beef casserole.

Substitutions

Finally, the easiest way to create a new dish is to simply switch out some of the ingredients to create new flavours. A good way to do this is switching the meats around- switch pork sausages out for beef sausages. Turn your chick recipes into turkey recipes.

If a dish requires plenty of potato, see if it would work with sweet potato instead, or even butternut squash. The more you experiment, the better an idea you’ll get for what works. The more you know what works, the more outlandish you can afford to get with your experimenting. Before you know it, you’ll be Hestol Blumenthalling it up with bacon and egg ice cream.

Lacy Valentine Cupcakes

February 10, 2013 by Trish

These cupcakes are much easier to make than the design would suggest. Using an edible icing sheet with a lace print design enables you to incorporate fancy prints into your desserts with little effort and time.

Tools & Ingredients

  • Cupcakes
  • Buttercream Icing
  • Piping Bag (plastic disposable)
  • Fondant
  • Icing Sheet with Lace Print Design
  • Small flower gum paste cutter
  • Sugar Pearls
  • Rolling Pin
  • Heart cookie cutter
  • Piping Gel
  • Plastic mat or cutting board
  • Shortening
  • Ball tool

Steps

  1. Roll out fondant to 1/16” thickness on a greased mat/cutting board.
  2. Apply a thin coat of piping gel over the area where you are applying the print.
  3. Peel the plastic backing off the icing sheet and apply to the area where you applied the gel. Rub back and forth on top of the icing sheet to make it adhere.
  4. Place the heart cookie cutter over the area of the print you want included in your cut-out. Be sure to press firmly all around the sides of the cookie cutter to cut all the way through the icing sheet and fondant. Wiggle the cookie cutter slightly back and forth to release the cut area from the rest of the fondant.
  5. Set the cut heart aside to dry.
  6. Roll out a small amount of pink fondant to 1/16” thick. Use the gum paste flower cutter to cut out 3 flowers for each heart.  Using the ball tool, press into the center of the flower to create a spot for the sugar pearl.
  7. Apply a tiny bit of piping gel to the center of each flower and stick a sugar pearl in the middle. Use a little more gel to adhere the flowers along the side of the heart cut-out.
  8. Cut a hole on the pointy end of the disposable cake decorating bag. Fill bag 2/3 full with pink icing. Pipe buttercream icing on the cupcake, beginning with the outside and moving in a circular motion around the cupcake.  (It will resemble the look of a soft-serve ice cream cone).
  9. Stick the heart cut-out into the fresh icing. (If you let the icing harden up, the heart won’t stick).

It’s best to make all the heart cut-outs in advance and then you will be able to quickly put the cupcakes together as you ice them.  The sugar pearls are sold in Michael’s Craft Stores, online cake decorating stores and sometimes you’ll find them in gourmet stores. If you can’t find them, you can substitute pearl tapioca or simply pipe a white dot in the center of the flower.

You can use any kind of cake decorating bag, but I use the disposable ones so that I can just cut a hole and throw the bag out when I’m done. If you have plastic or linen cake decorating bags, then just use a large round tip to pipe the icing.

Icing sheets taste good and are so easy to incorporate into cupcake designs and other desserts. If you had to pipe the lace pattern, you’d be spending hours doing what takes mere minutes to do with these valentine cupcakes.
