A snowy weekend here in Toronto

January 15, 2011 by Tricia

We woke up to snow here in Toronto this morning. Oh yes, we’ve had some snow on the ground pretty much since the start of the year, but unlike most other areas we haven’t been getting hit heavily with snow … well … until now.

In December it was the cold cold weather that was my biggest complaint. We barely had any snow … not even when New York was buried in it .. we barely seemed to have any, yet we were freezing. I mean freezing- – 27 Celsius (-17 F) or more with the windchill, brrr. My thyroid is acting up lately too (or maybe it’s S.A.D.) so it’s making me really intolerant to the cold so I’m freezing even inside the house .. so you can imagine how cold I felt when it was -27 Celsius outside. I might as well have been in the arctic in the dead of winter.

I’m not sure how much snow we’ve had this week, but it’s snowed a fair amount today and we’re expecting more through the weekend and I think there’s another big storm headed our way on Tuesday. I wouldn’t be surprised to see my jogging enthusiast neighbor moving around the neighborhood on Crescent Moon Gold 12 Snowshoes if the snow keeps up!

You know what’s kinds of strange about all of the snow we’ve had so far this winter? So far not one snow fall has been sticky snow .. you know, the kind of snow that’s good for making snow balls?

How do I know that?

Well .. my dog, a Labrador Retriever, really loves snow (and water, and swimming etc) and when she was a puppy I discovered that if I picked up snow and threw snow balls at her she thought it was one of the greatest things in the world. she’d try to catch each snow ball. It’s our little game every time we go outside and there’s fresh snow on the ground … that and she almost always has a roll in fresh snow.

So each time we go outside I pick up some snow and try to make a snow ball to throw at my funny black lab but it’s just not snowball snow. instead I’m just throwing handfuls of snow at her. She still thinks that’s fun, but not as much fun as snowballs.

Do you play in the snow? My dog loves when I take her out because she knows that I’ll play with her in the snow .. even if the snow’s not quite up to par. I have to remind my husband to throw some snow at the dog every once in a while …

How did you bring in the new year?

January 3, 2011 by Tricia

Happy New Year to all of my readers and visitors!

I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season and that the new year brings you health, happiness and that at least one of your wishes for yourself come true.

I had a fairly uneventful New Year’s eve and new years day … pretty much how I like it. I used to do the party thing … ie go down town to the clubs or go to someones New Year’s Party or even hold my own … but it’s such a hassle after a while. I know, that probably sounds like I’m a party pooper, but my husband and I just like having a nice dinner together and doing our own thing.

Hopefully none of you partied so much that you’re now looking in to inpatient rehab centers wink wink. LOL With any luck the hangovers are long gone and life is back to normal for most of you?

So tell me .. what did you do to celebrate the New Year and did you make any resolutions?

I didn’t make any resolutions. Hey, I already quit smoking in October! That’s a big one! The 12th of this month will be 3 months for me. Also, thanks to the medication that I’m taking for my migraines I can’t even have a drink (another reason we didn’t go out to any parties for New Years) so I haven’t even had a drink for close to five months. Not that I ever drank much before that, but that’s two big things I quit doing all before the new year.

So what resolutions did you make and did you break them yet?

Baking my first cheesecake

December 18, 2010 by Tricia

If I feel up to it, tomorrow I’ll bake my first ever cheesecake.

When my husband and I went shopping last weekend we got all the ingredients that I’d need to make at least two pumpkin cheese cakes. Of course … I spent Sunday and Monday busily baking cookies and then I had doctors appointments the rest of the week so there’s been no more baking since then.

Since this is the first cheesecake that I’m attempting to make I thought I’d make one for my husband and I to try and if that works out, I’ll make a second one closer to Christmas to take to my in-laws for Christmas day.

Hey we can freeze half of the first one if we want to – otherwise between the cookies and the cheesecake I’m pretty sure I’ll be looking for diet pills for women in the new year! You should see the top of my friend where I have bags and bags of all the cookies I’ve made stored. I’m expecting a cookie avalanche any day now.

The reason why I said I might bake the cheesecake tomorrow if I feel up to it is because I started taking more of my migraine medication on Thursday. Remember that anticonvulsant – Topamax that I started taking at the end of August that made me feel so weird for several weeks? Well I’m taking an extra pill each day now and I’m back to having some more weird side effects and I’m extra tired. It’s the tiredness that might keep me from baking tomorrow … but if I don’t bake the cheesecake tomorrow I’ll get around to it on Monday or Tuesday I’m sure.

Have you ever baked a cheesecake? Did it go well? Any tips for me?

Exhausted after shopping all afternoon

December 11, 2010 by Tricia

I’m so tired! My husband and I were out shopping this afternoon and we shopped for about 5 hours!

I’m exhausted!

The good news is that I think I managed to get just about everything I needed … now I just have to spend the next several days in the kitchen cooking! Oh boy! LOL

My feet are already sore after all the walking I did earlier today .. I can’t imagine how they’re going to feel tomorrow.

I have to try to remember to bring the camera out tomorrow when I’m baking all those cookies. I’ve been baking a lot in the last two weeks and I haven’t taken any pictures of the process or the finished product. I have to at least take a picture or two of the finished cookies tomorrow … I know I’ll make you guys drool over the chocolate chocolate chip cookies. Yum … hmmm perhaps the photos will even be good enough to be artwork prints? Well for foodies.

I’ll be baking cookies and more cookies this weekend

December 10, 2010 by Tricia

I think I’m gearing up for another baking session this weekend. I don’t know why I’ve become so interested in baking in the last couple of weeks, but my husband is loving it.

Earlier this week I found a few more recipes that I’d like to try making this weekend. One of them is the Cinnamon Swirl Brioche that I mentioned a few days ago, and the rest are cookies.

In particular I plan on making three types of cookies this weekend.

One cookie is called a Sugar Crackle Gingerbread Cookie. It’s not a gingerbread man cookie it’s a round cookie and it looks delicious. I love gingersnaps and other types of ginger cookies and the recipe for this cookie sounds delicious. The second cookie recipe that I’d like to try is a recipe that I found on Southern Plate called “Dishpan Cookies”. The cookies are made with oatmeal and cornflakes and they look like huge old fashioned oatmeal cookies.

The last cookie recipe that I plan to make is “Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies”. Mmmmm Decadent sounding. I love nothing more than chocolate and these cookies look delicious.

I think my house is going to smell fantastic again this weekend. Oh and I’m sure everything will be covered in flour again too – including my danze faucet! That’s the one thing I don’t like about cooking and baking – the cleaning or clean up.

We can’t really afford to buy a lot of Christmas presents for our family this year, but since I’m on a baking spree (and we have most of the ingredients I’m using here at home already so it’s not costing much) maybe I’ll make up some “home made” presents. That might work.
