Midnight’s been acting strange today

April 20, 2008 by Tricia

Poor Midnight.

She had a great day yesterday. Chris and I took her to the park and she ran around and played fetch with us. She also played with other dogs too. Then when I was outside doing a bit of gardening Chris brought her out to watch me work so she was outside a good portion of the day yesterday.

She was even introduced to the hose for the first time when I watered the garden beds after planting some new plants. She kept trying to drink the water as I sprayed the garden.

Today though, I’m not feeling so hot and since I haven’t slept I’m not really even that steady on my feet. So other than Chris taking her out a few times she hasn’t had that exciting a day.

Actually, she had us worried earlier. Chris took her to the park and he met a man with a one year old Chocolate lab and for some reason Chris felt comfortable enough to let Midnight off the leash in the park. That’s something we’d decided we weren’t going to do yet because she’s too young, too excitable and doesn’t always listen when she’s excited.

Apparently she did listen to Chris as she played with the other dog and came back to him when called, but when Chris came home with her she was panting really bad. We’d never heard her pant so hard or for so long. She just kept flopping down on the ground.

We gave her water and a couple of ice cubes in case she was both hot and thirsty, but still she kept panting. She finally seemed a lot better after about 15 minutes but she was really tired out and slept for a while.

Since that time she seems ok, but she keeps looking outside and whining. She can see the park from our front door. She can probably see dogs down there and kids playing on swing sets and I hope that’s the reason she’s whining.

She’s just acting odd.

Poor Midnight.

She’s really INto her food

April 15, 2008 by Tricia

My puppy … you gotta love her … she totally lives for her food.

IMG_3319

Back on March 15th we got a new bag of Nutro’s Healthy Choice Lamb and Rice formula dog food for large breed puppies. After we dumped the contents into one of her dog food bins Midnight couldn’t resist looking in the bag to see if we’d forgotten any pieces or crumbs.

I’d cut out a portion of the bag because I wanted to keep the feeding directions. When you have a growing puppy it’s important to know how much you should be feeding them when they reach a certain weight or age range. So there was a small cut out in the bag.

She dove into the bag and ended up wearing it on her head. It was pretty funny and I couldn’t resist taking some pictures.

At least, thanks to photography, I now know exactly how long the second largest bag lasts! We just opened another bag for her last night so one bag lasts approximately one month. Well … we mix it with another dog food – Blue Buffalo Large breed chicken and brown rice for puppies, so I guess if we were only feeding her the one food a bag would only last 15 days. Boy, dogs are expensive!

Whenever I post photos of Midnight people comment on how shiny her coat is and some have asked what we’ve been feeding her. Well now you know – Nutro Healthy Choice Lamb and Rice formula dog food for large breed puppies and Blue Buffalo Large breed chicken and brown rice for puppies.

When we first got her she was pretty sick. She had a bacterial infection in her bowel, roundworms, diarrhea, an eye infection and then an ear infection, dry skin and dandruff. Her coat wasn’t always nice and shiny, but about a month after she came to live with us we started to notice how shiny her fur was becoming. I guess it was one of the first signs that she was getting healthier.

She still has red eyes (and we’re still treating them) and her movements are sometimes still loose so she gets Pepto Bismol every day, but overall she’s a very happy fairly healthy 7.5 month old puppy who’s extremely motivated by food!

Her latest pastime is climbing on the couch and looking out the window or ringing the bell we hung from the front door to go outside.

BTW the window is smudged. She rubs her wet nose on it and licks the window as she watches what’s going on outside.

Do your pets do silly things when you get a new bag of food or even when you are about to feed them? Midnight runs and jumps around the kitchen and whines as we prepare her food. Silly dog.

I have another story and cute picture of Midnight on one of my other blogs if you’re interested.

I’m So Stuffed!

April 7, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I went grocery shopping in the early evening and we came back with fresh Halibut steaks, new asparagus, corn, fresh organic strawberries and salad fixings. We also bought some wine – a Pignot Grigio.

So guess what we had for dinner?

I marinated the Halibut in a mixture of chopped chives – fresh from the garden, dill, paprika and a tiny bit of cayenne pepper and a splash of the white wine.

As the fish marinated, I prepared the asparagus by rinsing them and snapping off the woody ends (they were young asparagus so the ends were pretty good). I then placed them in a microwave steamer container. When I cooked them I put them in the microwave for about four minutes, took them out, drained the tiny bit of water that was in the container, added a tiny bit of margarine and a splash of lemon juice and microwaved them again for 30 seconds. Yummy.

I shucked the husk off of two corn and steamed them in the microwave as well (5 minutes).

As if the fish that Chris eventually barbecued on the grill, the asparagus and corn weren’t enough I also made a salad with fresh chives, green onion, sweet onion, organic salad mix, tomato, radish, cucumber and tomato.

We also had a glass or two of that lovely wine and I’m a little light headed right now.

For desert we finished off some fresh pineapple that we already had. I chopped it up and mixed it with some of the strawberries that we’d purchased at the grocery store.

The meal was delicious, but it was much larger than we normally have these days. So I’m stuffed.

I think I might head for bed soon!

What did you have for dinner?

BTW Our puppy got to taste a few new foods tonight. We gave her a small piece of strawberry, fish, and radish. She seemed to love them. We also gave her some cucumber, salad leaves (spinach and lettuce) and a tiny piece of pineapple. She’d had a taste of each of those before. She’s not big on the leaves but seems to really like cucumber.

A lovely spring weekend in the city

white Tulips

Such a dreamy picture of some of the white tulips that I grow in my garden …. It’s the perfect time for a gardener to be dreaming of tulips and other spring flowers too. The weather is finally beginning to warm up and all the plants in my garden are beginning to come out of their dormant state.

I was just saying on my gardening blog that it’s such a beautiful day here in Toronto that I expect to go outside this afternoon and tidy up my garden. Hopefully I don’t become obsessed and stay out there for hours!

We’d also like to take our dog out for a good walk today.

Last weekend we went to Cherry Beach twice (although Sunday was super cold and windy, especially at the beach, so we ended up going to The Brickworks for our walk). It was beautiful! Yesterday we ended up going to The Beach and walking on the boardwalk. So today … if I can pry myself away from the computer and then from the garden, we’d like to go to Cherry beach again.

I just love living in Toronto. The weathers fairly nice most of the year (not this past winter!) and there are so many things to do. I love it. Plus now that we have a dog we have more incentive to get out and enjoy what this great city has to offer.

What have you been doing on this beautiful spring weekend? Working in the garden or doing something outside as you enjoy the great weather?

Gardeners, Plant and Nature lovers can join in every Sunday, visit As the Garden Grows for more information. GTS participants remember to check in at As the Garden Grows each week so that we’ll know you made a new post!

Cool gadgets for your pet

April 3, 2008 by Tricia

Anyone who’s visited this site in the last five months or so would have to be blind not to have noticed that I talk about our Labrador Retriever puppy at least once a week. We got her last November and she’s become a huge part of each and every day since she arrived in our home.

When I write about our Lab puppy Midnight many of you have taken the time to share stories about your own puppies and adult dogs. Some of you miss those puppy days and others have offered great tips that have helped keep me sane as I try to train Midnight. I really appreciate all of your comments. They’ve helped!

I’ve never been much of an online shopper, however since we got Midnight I find myself searching various online pet shops for interesting toys and other items that I could buy her. She’s a very pampered puppy! Not only have I bought her a new bed online, but I’ve also purchased treats, a fashionable doggy coat, and at least a dozen toys!

One of the stores that I’ve browsed and will likely purchase some items from in the near future is Pet Gadgets. Their tag line is PetGadgets.com – Innovative Pet Products and it suits their online store perfectly.

Pet Gadgets has some really cool items. Ones that I haven’t seen at other online pet shops. For instance they have items such as PetPeek which is a bubble window for your fence so your pet can look out at the world, a dog house air conditioner and heater, a vibrating pet massager, an Adirondack Dog Chair and hundreds of other great items.

Just like any pet store they have a wide range of products for all types of pets. You’ll find training supplies, auto accessories, waste management products and solutions, bowls, feeders, collars, leashes, eco-friendly products, treats, toys, grooming tools and even items for handicapped pets.

I think I’ve looked at just about every section of the site and I was amazed at the variety of products and how handy many of them seem. As I said earlier they have items that you just won’t find in other pet stores and online stores. I found the prices to be quite reasonable as well.

If you have a pet it’s definitely worth taking a moment to visit Pet Gadgets. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
