How do you cope with your dogs shedding?

July 12, 2008 by Tricia

Fellow dog owners I need your help. Midnight’s been shedding like crazy for the last month and there’s no sign of it stopping soon.

We’ve had her since November and she only shed twice prior to this, perhaps for a month at a time. The first two sheds were easier to deal with. Perhaps because she was smaller and maybe because it was puppy fur, but now she’s got her real fur and she’s really shedding heavily.

We have hardwood floors throughout the house and I sweep once a day. We have a vacuum (no closets so it’s in the basement) and I hate pulling it out because it’s big and clunky. Plus Midnight thinks it’s her special toy when I do bring it out.

I’ve been thinking of getting another vacuum – one that’s a little smaller, lighter and easier to handle. It’s got to be a good one though. I thought about getting one of those Sebo vacuums since they are good for people with allergies. Chris and I are both allergic to dust mites and uh … dogs. So it might be a good idea to get one.

I’ve been grooming Midnight every two days. I go over her coat with the ezgroom brush and then the furminator. The Furminator takes out hair from the undercoat and it’s supposed to really help with shedding. Then I go over her coat again with the ezgroom brush. It helps, but not enough. Maybe it’s just the heat causing her to shed continuously. At this rate she’ll be bald by August!

Anyone have any tips for me other than what I’m already doing? Sweeping and vacuuming the floors and then grooming the dog regularly. What else can I do?

Trying to decide what to do this weekend

July 11, 2008 by Tricia

At this moment I’m busy trying to decide what to do this weekend. Chris and I have lots of options – some better than others. Help me decide?

My nephew has a photographic display at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition this weekend. I really should go to that to see his work and to check out the other artists. I just love pottery and sculptures and if the artwork is anything like last years I’ll be buying some items this time around.

The only problem is that tomorrow is going to be HOT. Really hot. So … do we go to the art show tomorrow or Sunday when it’s going to be a bit cooler?

We have gardening that still needs to be done as well. We started mulching the backyard garden last week, but about 1/3 of the back garden beds aren’t finished yet because we ran out of mulch! We bought more but haven’t had time to add it yet. Certainly if it’s going to feel like 40 Celsius (104 F) tomorrow I don’t think I want to be working in the hot sunny garden. Of course I could just stay inside where it will be nice and cool, work on the computer or be lazy and curl up and read A New Earth, Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. Yeah it’s a self help type book. It was a gift from Chris’ aunt. I should read it at some point.

The other thing that Chris and I would both like to do, but don’t have to do, is to perhaps go back to Cherry Beach this weekend with our dog Midnight. We took her there last Sunday and she had a ball playing in the water. We’d taken her to the lake before, but she’d never done more than splashed in the water. This time Chris was throwing toys into the deeper water for her to fetch and we got to see her swim for the first time. She took to it well and other dog owners said she was a great swimmer. They couldn’t believe it was her first time.

We all had fun at the beach so I think that’s a must do.

Of course this is summer in Toronto and there’s always all kinds of festivals, events and things to do on the weekends. I guess I should check what’s going on so that we don’t miss out on something good.

At this point I’m thinking we should go to the beach tomorrow – the hot day. It’s cooler by the water and if we get hot we can always get in the water. Certainly with all the wet dogs running by we will get a bit wet. Then on Sunday we could go to the Art Exhibit and then finish our gardening when we come back. If there’s any other good things going on in Toronto we’ll I guess we can try to go to one of them on Saturday evening.

Looks like we’re going to have another busy weekend. What are your plans for the weekend?

Anyone else having trouble getting food for your dog?

July 5, 2008 by Tricia

The last few months we’ve been having a terrible time getting a steady supply of the two brands of dry dog food that we feed our Labrador Retriever puppy.

The first few months were ok, but by March one of the brands that we were feeding our dog with a sensitive tummy became unavailable for a while. It was Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Chicken and Rice dog food. I guess the company was having trouble getting one of the ingredients for the dog food and it messed up their whole supply until June.

Luckily we were also feeding her another dog food – Nutro Natures Choice Large Breed puppy Lamb and brown rice dog food. However now whenever we go into get pet supplies we have trouble finding this particular brand.

Chris went to the pet store early this morning specifically to look for the two brands of dry dog food that we feed Midnight and they were out of the Nutro again! A Nutro rep happened to be in the store and she told him that they are having trouble getting a supply of lamb for the food. I guess they get their lamb from New Zealand and there’s been a drought there that’s affect the livestock.

Naturally she suggested that we switch to one of their other products, but as I said earlier our dog has a very sensitive stomach so I really don’t want to start switching her food every time I need to buy her a new bag of food. I said it that way because I suspect that if we switch to one of their other products or even another brand that we’ll run into supply problems again. That seems to be our luck lately.

Are any of you having trouble getting certain brands of food for your dog? Or is it just us having terrible luck picking a company that can keep our dog supplied in healthy food?

My dogs strange habits

July 3, 2008 by Tricia

Midnight has been doing something really strange lately. It started a week or so ago.

She’ll come over to me and say I’m lying on the couch with one or both feet over the edge she’ll lift her front leg so that her body is over my foot/feet. Obviously she wants her belly rubbed.

Then, after a minute or two of having her belly rubbed by my foot, if I’m obliging that is, she’ll move forward and lift one of her back legs and then sink down so that she’s sitting on my foot. Now this is a dog that weighs at least 60 lb so it’s not all that comfortable for me! She does this with my husband too but not as often as she does it to me.

Once I pull my foot out from under her she’ll back up so that I can scratch her bum with my foot, then she’ll start the whole process of getting my foot underneath her again – over and over until I get tired of having my foot abused and sat on and pull it back onto the couch.

Anyone else have a dog with weird habits like trying to sit on one foot that happens to be sticking out?

Weird dog.

Oh yeah did I tell you that on Saturday she chewed on my refinished staircase? The one that took me three weeks to scrape paint off of, sand, stain and coat with varnish? She’s lucky she’s still living here!

Where’s the off switch on a puppy?

June 26, 2008 by Tricia

Gawd … our puppy is so hyper right now and it’s almost 11:30 pm! While we were outside gardening this evening we kept her inside in her crate. Obviously that was too long cause she’s got energy to burn … and of course Chris and I are both tired after doing all that work on the yard.

Arghhhh

When we came inside and let her out of her crate she ran around the house like crazy … running low to the ground the way puppies do when they are playing. It was funny but I knew then that she’d probably be a handful for the rest of the evening.

Chris is fading fast and I’ve got work to do on the computer. This might be a long night. Now if only I can find the office supplies I bought the other day .. that would be good. I’m totally out of pens .. my husband steals them all the time.

Hopefully the puppy settles down soon. If she doesn’t I’ll see if I can summon the energy to take her out for a long walk. That might help.
