The old way of drying your clothes

This weeks theme is Old Fashioned

Blue clothes line covered in frost, ice and snow

We do have a dryer, it came with the house when we bought it (it’s 30 years old and probably qualifies for this photo hunt theme too!), but we sometimes dry our clothes the old fashioned way on a clothes line in the backyard.

I don’t think that there as many people using clothes lines these days as there used to be. I grew up with my parents using a clothes line or later one of those odd large metal umbrella looking things in our backyard and when we moved into this neighborhood we noticed that most of our neighbors (all the closest are in their 80’s) used clothes lines.

Our house had a clothes line but it wasn’t in good shape. The actual line was sagging and the wheel was rusted. We got a new set up and one of our neighbors showed us how to tighten up the line properly.

We rarely dry anything on the line in the winter. Well not unless I want a stiff frozen piece of laundry! I think I have used it in the winter once or twice though when it’s been unseasonably warm. Mostly the clothes line is just a great place for the birds to hang out in the winter.

Frosted clothes line

In the summer we use the clothes line quite a bit. Unlike some of our neighbors we don’t dry our under garments on the line. No one needs to see those! We tend not to dry towels or sheets on the line either as they aren’t as soft when dried on the line as they are when they’re dried in a dryer. We do dry all of our cotton clothes on the line though and that makes up the bulk of most of our laundry during the summer.

The clothes smell so fresh and clean when they are dried outside! Oh and did you know that the sun is a great way to keep white clothes bright and clean? It naturally bleaches the clothes.

Since our dryer is ancient and I’m sure its an energy hog we also save a lot of money by drying a good portion of our clothing on the line during the warmer months. In the winter I often hang clothes in the basement to dry instead of using the dryer for everything.

When it’s cold out everyone wears a coat!

This weeks theme is Important

It’s really cold out! It’s -15 Celsius with the wind chill (5 F) so keeping ourselves and our puppy warm when we venture outside has become very important!

Lab in winter coat 8

Unfortunately she doesn’t really love her coat. She’s trying to figure out how to wiggle out of it in the picture below:

Lab in winter coat 8

I think that’s in part because it doesn’t fit her all that well.

This brand has really long neck and abdominal straps … long enough that the straps are so big I can’t really even Velcro them together as I should be able to do! I’ll have to do a little sewing magic to the straps to make it fit better I guess.

When Chris took her for a walk in her coat she held one of the neck straps in her mouth and apparently walked really nicely. Perhaps we’ve learned a valuable trick? The next time we take her out in nicer weather ie when she’s not wearing the coat, we’ll have to let her bring a toy with her. Perhaps that will at least keep her from eating leaves, grass, dirt, rocks, stones and garbage along the way!

She’s been sleepy all day for some reason. She’s also had a lot of diarrhea this week – just when it had been getting better! I hope she’s not sick.

Here’s a photo of my sleeping pup. She fell asleep on Chris’ knee:

Midnight is getting bigger!

This weeks theme is Skinny

When we first got our puppy, Midnight, in November she was exactly three months old and she was a skinny little thing. She doesn’t look that skinny in the above photo, but believe me she was very sick and she was much too thin.

She’s grown quite a bit in the 7 weeks that we’ve had her. I think she’s going to be on the small side for a Lab as she only weighs 20 pounds right now, but she’s apparently healthy again and growing and gaining weight as each day goes by.

Just to show you how much she’s grown. I placed her doggy bed on her favorite chair last night. We’d taken her doggy bed away a month ago or so when she started having diarrhea while in her crate and well … she also chewed a hole in her bed. Darn those labs and their need to chew! So last night was the first time she’d used her doggy bed in quite a while.

As you can see she’s grown a lot. She pretty much takes up the whole doggy bed when she lies in it now. Good thing I just bought her a new one eh? She won’t get to use the new one for a couple of months though. I’d like to wait until she’s finished teething or at least just about done finished teething as I’m hoping her chewing will have slowed down or at the very least all the new adult teeth she’ll have won’t be so sharp and damaging!

Oh and she’s definitely not skinny anymore. I think she’s just right for her size.

Did you know that leashes are tasty?

This weeks theme is delicious

Labrador Retriever Puppy Midnight

I think our Lab puppy, Midnight, finds her leather leash to be absolutely delicious. She’s always trying to chew on it when we first put it on her. In the above photo I’d put the leash on before I got my winter coat and other gear on so she had time to settle down for a good chew.

Here’s an areal view:

Labrador Retriever Puppy Midnight

She already chewed through, or well just about chewed through, her vinyl leash just before Christmas. I wonder how long this one will last?

As you can see she’s grown a bit and I think she’s gained some weight. She’s doing a lot better although I think she’s still fighting something. She goes for her third set of shots on Monday.

Melting old snow sure is messy!

This weeks theme is Messy

IMG_2796

Remember that storm that I said we had two weeks ago? Well I took this photo two weeks ago Sunday in the evening once most of the snow had finished falling. Pretty messy huh?

That’s our car in the foreground on the right in the driveway, and our neighbors car on the street surrounded by a mountain of snow.

We’ve had temperatures around freezing or just above freezing mostly since that time so the snow’s been melting slowly. We’ve even had some rain and a thunder storm or two as well. Imagine, thunder in December! Weird. Very weird.

Since we haven’t had much new snow, only a dusting, the melting piles of snow are kind of dirty from car exhaust and look quite yucky. Midnight, our puppy tends to do some of her business on our front lawn so our snow is starting to have a bit of a yellow tinge to it as well. Do you know how hard it is to keep a puppy from eating dirty snow that’s on the lawn or in the snow banks we pass on our walks!
