Driving me nuts with questions!

May 5, 2009 by Tricia

My husbands cousin’s wife .. I guess I could call her my cousin-in-law, is driving me nuts! Since I’m a nurse she calls me up or sends me an email every time she’s sick or has some kind of health related question. As you might imagine, with Swine Flu in the news last week she called me at least three times a day!

Do you have any friends or relatives like that? People that ask your advice about something your knowledgeable about because of your work? Doesn’t it drive you nuts?

She’s calmer now about the flu … but now she wants to lose weight so she’s sending me questions about how to lose weight fast and sending me links to places like the atro phex review site for me to read and advice her!

** Big eye roll **

I think that I’m just not going to answer the phone or her email for a week or so and maybe she’ll get the hint.

A perfect Spring weekend

April 24, 2009 by Tricia

It’s going to be a beautiful weekend here in Toronto. Already it’s 19 Celsius (66 F) outside, and tomorrow the temperature is supposed to reach 26 Celsius (79 F) or more!

Other than Chris going to the Nuance progressive rock concert on Sunday at the Black Swan (he wrote about it on his blog if you’re in the area and want to learn more) we don’t have any specific plans for the weekend, but I think we’ll probably be spending quite a bit of time outside enjoying the nice weather. Perhaps we’ll have a barbecue tonight.

I have some bulbs that I want to plant (Crocosmia) and a few other things that I need to do in the garden such as prune some of the roses. Tomorrow will be the perfect day for doing that kind of work. maybe we’ll even have some time to take our dog, Midnight to Cherry beach or to Taylor Creek park for a run off leash. She’d love it.

Is the weather going to be nice in your area this weekend? Any plans? A trip to the cottage or maybe the Outer Banks or perhaps just staying in the city and doing some yard work like we plan to do?

Dog toys disappearing like socks in the dryer!

April 23, 2009 by Tricia

Ok, I think just about everyone has done a wash and ended up with missing socks – probably several times, right?

Well I think I’ve discovered something else that has that strange disappearing phenomenon. Dog toys, in particular, around here at least, white nylabones.

Back in December or early January Midnight was playing with the nub of her nylabone and then it seemed to just disappear in thin air. By nub, I mean it was just the end of what had been a foot long hard plastic bone – maybe the size of a small orange.

We searched the house looking under tables, chairs, the couches and in all the corners. It didn’t turn up. Then we thought that maybe it might have fallen between the couch seats (our loveseat, couch and lazyboy have a total of five reclining seats) so we searched all of the nooks and crannies in the couches and still didn’t find it.

Then we started to wonder if maybe she’d swallowed the darn thing. Labs will eat just about anything and even though it was probably a little big to swallow I suppose it’s possible.

Four or five months have gone by and we still haven’t found the bone nub. If Midnight did swallow the plastic bone she’s shown no signs of problems – not that it would be good to have a large piece of plastic bone in her stomach of course …

Fast forward to earlier this week. We bought her a new bone sometime in January and she’s been working on it ever since. Surprisingly the bone was still close to it’s original size, but the ends were worn, one in particular had a sharp arrow like point.

Just like the last time, one minute she was playing with it on the floor and the next it was gone. Where – who knows …. but again, I think it must be in one of the couches. We’ve searched, but we can’t find it. This time I’m 99% sure that she didn’t swallow it … it was just too big … if she did try to swallow it I’m sure she wouldn’t have been feeling well after doing so!

I think our couches are becoming like dryers … just like washing and drying socks – you never seem to get an even number back and with the bones, it seems that we lose ever second one we buy her. Where the heck do they go? Man, searching for lost dog toys is harder than one of those Wall St jobs I think! LOL

For those of you with pets or even kids for that matter … do you find that toys just suddenly seem to disappear without a trace? Have you ever found toys that have been missing for ages? If so where? Maybe your answers will give me some hints as to where to look for Midnight’s bones.

Delicious Sweet Potato Fries

April 22, 2009 by Tricia

Over the last two weeks I kept seeing this commercial on TV for McCain’s new Sweet Potato Fries. My husband loves Sweet potatoes and yams and the few times he’s had Sweet Potato fries in restaurants he’s loved them.

So about a week ago we decided to get some of the new Sweet Potato fries when we were shopping for groceries. They were ok – not as tasty as some of the ones I’ve had in restaurants, but not bad. Unfortunately the bag didn’t have all that much in it – four small servings which we ate over two days.

When we went shopping last weekend I decided to buy some sweet potatoes and try making my own baked Sweet Potatoes fries. I didn’t think it would be too hard … I mean I’ve done it with regular potatoes- just some oil, garlic or onion powder and some Italian seasoning and bake. Yummy!

So on Monday, after looking at about 15 Sweet Potato Fry recipes online I decided to try my own hand at making some of these delicious treats.

I sliced up two sweet potatoes. Now I don’t know if you’ve ever cut a raw sweet potato, they are really hard … so instead of cutting them into wedges or “fry” like shapes I just cut them into circular slices, about 1/4 inch thick.

Here’s My Recipe for Baked Sweet Potato Fries:

2 sliced Sweet potatoes

In a bowl, mix:

2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp Cayenne pepper
1 tsp Paprika
1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1 tsp brown sugar

Mix olive oil spices and brown sugar (optional) well and then stir the sliced Sweet Potato slices in the mixture until well coated with oil and spices.

Lay the coated Sweet Potato slices out on a baking pan and put them in an oven that’s been preheated to 425 F for approximately half an hour. I turned the “fries” after about 15 minutes.

Soon after putting the Sweet Potato slices in the oven the house was filled with the smell of cinnamon. I loved it!

My first attempt at sweet potato fries went well. They were absolutely mouth wateringly delicious. Sweet and tasty with a hint of medium/hot spice at the back of your throat after you’d swallowed a piece thanks to the Cayenne pepper. Unfortunately, probably due to the brown sugar that I added to the coating mix, our fries didn’t get crispy. The sugar probably prevented that. I still have some sweet potatoes so I’ll probably make Sweet Potato fries again this weekend – this time without the sugar. I’m sure they’ll be crisper, and likely just as tasty.

Do you like Sweet potato fries? Have you ever tried making your own? If so what spices do you put on yours – if any?

BTW sorry for not writing for a while! I think this is my longest gap in three years! I had a bad bad bad reaction to Sulfasalazine. See my post below. I had a rash all over my body, was nauseated and massively headache for about a week and a half. I hate taking new meds – I really do!

I think someone called the police on me!

April 7, 2009 by Tricia

Oops, I think I scared my neighbors!

Just before midnight I went outside with our dog to let her do her final business of the evening. She took her time playing in the odd April snow that we had on Monday and then we headed back to the house.

When I got to the screen door and tried to enter it wouldn’t open! Was it locked? Had my coat sleeve accidentally hit the tiny latch on the screen door handle on the way out?

So there I was standing outside in the cold wondering how I was going to get back into the house. Chris had gone to bed earlier and surely he was asleep. How was I going to get his attention? I mean, it’s not like I could access the inner door … I was standing outside our enclosed front porch so there was three doors between me and the warmth of the house.

Oh boy.

So I started rattling the screen door in it’s frame and calling out Chris’ name. Considering the time I didn’t want to yell too loud, but I had to call out Chris’ name in the hope that he’d hear me, didn’t I?

I’m not sure how long I was out there calling Chris’ name and rattling the screen door, but I don’t think it was any longer than five minutes. Finally Chris appeared at the front door in only his underwear. He couldn’t understand why I wasn’t in the house. I had to rattle the screen door again to show him I couldn’t get into the front porch. He reluctantly came forward and opened the door – he didn’t want to get cold!

I asked him if the door had been locked and he said it wasn’t. I guess the condensation inside the porch must have frozen on the screen doors latch and it quickly froze shut when it closed behind me when I took the dog outside. Funny … that never happened when it was really cold during the winter or, for that matter, ever before!

Once I was inside I started to calm down. I guess I got a little rattled at the thought of being locked (or frozen) out of the house at that time of night.

Once I’d put our Lab Midnight to bed in her crate I happened to notice some car lights outside as I passed the front window. I seemed like the car was parked or idling on the corner, so I parted the curtains and guess what?

It was a police car!

Oops!

I went upstairs to change for bed and told Chris that a police car was in front of our house across the street. As I told him the police car moved forward, did a U-turn and headed back towards the hospital where we both work. There’s almost always police in the Emergency Department so one of them must have taken the call that was so close. Good response time if they were coming for the “disturbance” I was creating.

I’ll bet that one of my neighbors heard me yelling for Chris or rattling the door and called the police. The neighbors in the house adjoining ours might have heard the door rattles and thought someone was trying to break into their home, perhaps. Or maybe someone thought my calls of Chris’ name were really cries for help?

Either way, I’m pretty sure someone close by must have called the cops. Sorry! My bad! < blush >

I think I might just slip the cellphone in my pocket from now on when I go out late at night – just in case something like that happens again!

Strange, isn’t it that the door seemed to freeze closed – I mean, it’s cold out, but not all that bad.

Have you ever been locked out of your house? Or frozen out as in my case?
