Well my Redneck neighbors are finally gone!

September 3, 2009 by Tricia

The nightmare is over …

Ahh … a sigh of relief! My redneck nuisance neighbors are finally completely gone – only three days after their rental lease ended!

These are the neighbors that moved into the house next door in January. I call them rednecks because they were loud, didn’t take care of the house or property (you should see the weeds in the backyard, some are five feet tall!) and well … they seemed to collect tires and cars!

As they slowly moved out of the house next door (moving began the second weekend of August) I counted a total of 16 tires being moved from their backyard and maybe the basement! Who the heck needs 16 tires?

They were the worst movers too. They borrowed a truck from a friend (looked like a UPS truck but it was painted silver) for a few of their moves but they didn’t know how to pack the truck. It seemed like they were just carrying things out one at a time and hadn’t packed anything at all!

I thought that they were finally out of the house on Saturday, but on Monday the guy showed up with his son and they started hauling stuff out of the basement! However, they didn’t take much of it away. Instead they put a big HD flat screen TV on the front porch as well as two single mattresses and some other stuff and left it there until today! They’re lucky that nobody stole it off the porch!

I think that someone was casing the house last night though … there was a guy standing outside my house last night for about 15 minutes and he kept looking at my neighbors porch. He was also trying to call someone … I wouldn’t be surprised if he was trying to contact someone with a truck so that they could steal that TV!

Oh and on Monday when the guy and his son were hauling stuff out of the basement window they piled most of it in the driveway. It was garbage bags full of clothes, a tacky set of cupboards, a very used dresser and a bunch of other stuff. Our driveway looked worse than it did during the 6 week long garbage strike (at least it smelled a bit better!).

If I needed any proof that they were ignorant low class people I got it on Tuesday when the home owners son and wife came to take a look at the house and clean it up! They let me come in and they showed me how their renters had painted the walls (tacky colors and stripes on the doors???) and how the paint was peeling and bubbling everywhere because they must have used latex paint over oil paint!

The carpets were ruined as well! They got a puppy in January shortly after they moved in and from the looks of it the dog did his business on the carpet – several times. There were stains all over the carpet in the living room, dining room and hall way.

I know they kept the dog in the kitchen most of the time, but the dog ruined that room too. The home owners had put in nice laminated wood flooring in the kitchen before they rented the house and now the floors are scratched and bubbling up in places. Not something that usually happens to laminate so that dog must have been peeing all over the place and they must not have even tried to clean it up! Can you imagine cooking meals in a kitchen that had uncleaned dog pee in it? Yuck!

The rednecks also broke two chandeliers and a window. The chandeliers were ones that my old neighbor (Stalker – Sofie) who’s about 88 years old now, made when she was much younger and worked in a lighting factory. So they’re old chandeliers and had sentimental value as the woman had made them herself! They also managed to crack the porcelain tile in the bathroom. How, I don’t know!

All in all I think that it cost the homeowners more to rent to these low class people than it should have! They tore out the carpeting today and are having it replaced. I think they’ll also have to replace the kitchen floor, fix that cracked porcelain, repair at least one window pane and repaint most of the house! Oh yeah, and clear out all the weeds in the backyard!

There were some new people looking at the house the other day and they might move in as early as September 15th. They haven’t signed the lease yet though, so I don’t know if they’ll be my new neighbors or not. In a way I’m half hoping that they don’t move in because they were recommended my the former renters! Ah! They’re friends! If they do move in I hope that they don’t turn out to be anything like the people that just moved out as that was a nightmare for Chris and I (yes we fought over the things that our neighbors were doing because they frustrated us so much!) and an even worse nightmare for the home owners!

I’ve I’ve learned anything from this it’s that renting out a house is kind of scary! You never know what tenants you’ll get! (or in our case neighbors!)

Have you ever had nightmare neighbors or rented a house or room to someone that just destroyed the property?

I think the top of my head is going to blow off – yeah it’s a migraine

August 30, 2009 by Tricia

I don’t know if it’s the weather or what, but the last few days I’ve been pretty much put out of commission by headaches and migraines! Friday and today were both total write offs. I’m only just beginning to feel slightly human right now … after a day of throbbing head pain.

My husband was out all day and that didn’t help. Have you ever tried to take care of a dog (ie go out for pee breaks?) when you can barely stand up because when you do it feels like the top of your head is going to blow off?

My husband didn’t help when he got home either. He got back at about 9:30 pm and he had his cousin and his cousins two sons with him (they’d been helping another cousin fix a drainage problem in her backyard all day) and even though he knew I felt like death warmed over he brought the kids in to say hi. GRRR So of course I had to stand up for hugs and then see them out the door to their car again. Not fun!

If my husband does anything else like that tonight he’d better hope that Blue Advantage gives him good coverage ’cause I felt like punching him earlier! LOL

I hope that this migraine goes away soon and stays away. It’s gotten cold here in Toronto and it was overcast all weekend. Like I said earlier maybe the weather has something to do with the headaches?

It’s a dog’s life – Our Labrador Retriever, Midnight – turns two!

August 25, 2009 by Tricia

It was only a few hours ago when I realized that my precious Labrador Retriever, Midnight, was turning two today! Hmmm how does one celebrate a dogs birthday?

Close up of our Lab - Midnight Midnight was a sick little puppy when we got her (Nov, 23, 2007). Oh she looked healthy enough to brand new dog owner eyes, but by the next day we knew we’d purchased a sick puppy! She had diarrhea, a gastrointestinal infection, eye infections and even ear infections. I think during that first month of having her we weren’t all that sure she’d make it this far!

Of course, as new puppy owners -experiencing the highs and lows of puppyhood (boundless energy, nipping, accidents, shedding! and of course her illness) we weren’t sure we’d make it this far either! It can be exhausting taking care of a puppy, let me tell ‘ya!

Our little sweetie is healthy now and has been pretty much since her last birthday (but the first 9 months with us she needed lots of extra care!) and she’s been a fantastic addition to our home.

I’d really miss her if she weren’t here. We got her as a companion for me since I’m stuck at home sick with Crohn’s and she’s become my best little friend. She keeps me up when I start to feel down and she makes me laugh several times each day. Hey, they say laughter’s the best medicine, don’t they … so it’s great that my dog makes me laugh and smile.

It’s hard to believe she was ever this tiny!

I think she only weighed about 8 lb when we got her and now she’s around 70 lb! Big change!

You can see how much bigger she is now that she’s fully grown if you look at her beside the 8 inch high stones in our raised bed garden above, and in the picture below.

Midnight is a happy go lucky dog. She thinks she’s a watch dog – growling or barking through the screen door or window at people walking by our house, but really, she’s one of the friendliest dogs you could ever hope to meet. Barks and growls end as soon as she reaches a new person or dog and happy noises, frantic tail wagging and back end wiggling ensue. People who know her say they love how she “dances” when greeting them.

Our dog has lots of quirky habits – including a lust for chewing on cardboard boxes (we give her empty pop cartons to satisfy her urge), rolling on her back and yipping with joy (we call this having “fun fun”), backing up to us for a bum/ thigh scratch rub (constantly!), doing somersaults on the couch when she wants a rub, and a foot fetish (lick, lick, lick!).

Destroying a cracker box – on her bed of course!

She also has a never ending desire to play “dog Hockey” which consists of her dropping one of her favorite flat Nylabones at our feet so that we can shoot it across the hard wood floors for her to try to catch. If we get the bone past her it’s a goal for us. LOL She makes a good goalie though so we don’t get that many pucks er … bones past her.

Like most Labs Midnight is true water dog. The first time we took her to the beach and set her loose (right here in Toronto, Cherry Beach) she went right into the water and didn’t want to come out. We had other dog owners admiring her swimming skills asking us how long she’d been swimming – we’d look at our watches and say “oh, about 15 minutes. It’s her first time in!”.

Here she is on a recent swim in Lake Ontario with a new doggy pal:

She also loves taking a dip or splash at the pond in another dog walking area we take her to regularly … of course she’ll pretty much roll around in any water she finds … but oddly enough if it’s just rained or if I’ve watered the lawn she doesn’t like to walk on the wet grass and get her feet wet, but give her two inches or more of water and it’s a whole new story! Strange dog!

After the day is done and all the playing is over Midnight likes to become a lap dog … or in the case of the picture below a chest dog! Here she is cuddling on my husband!

Of course she has also taken over the lazy boy chair in our living room. Curling up in the center of it with her head and usually one paw thrown over the side … here’s a typical sleepy pose:

One of my favorite things about Midnight is the Wookie noises she makes – Whoogh woogh woo gahh … strange noises, but that’s the way she talks to us. LOL She also makes a kind of soft clucking noise when she’s looking at people, dogs or anything out side.

I’ve added lots of pictures to this post … perhaps too many! However, if you’re a dog lover and you’d like to see more pictures of our Midnight from 3 months old to two years please visit her Flickr page. She’s also got her own category on this blog “Our Puppy” if you want to read some of the stories about her and see more pictures in context.

So … I guess we now need to figure out how we’re going to celebrate her birthday. Maybe a special treat at dinner? Yeah, I think that’s a good way to celebrate.

There’s music in our house again!

August 22, 2009 by Tricia

I’m a happy camper today!

Our Home Theater receiver stopped working … oh, about two years ago. I think we had a power surge or something … anyway, since that time I haven’t been able to listen to the radio or my CDs. Well I guess I could have played CDs on my computer (but it’s already slow) or listened to a portable radio – but it’s not the same!

A few months ago my husband was all Gung Ho about buying a new receiver for our home theater system, but as it turns out that’s not so easy since we have a powered bass speaker and newer receivers don’t have that (or the other way around – non-powered?). Not to mention the fact that we have absolutely NO money to spend on things like this anyway.

As it turns out my husband was walking our dog early this morning and he passed by a house having a garage sale. He saw a Kenwood receiver and the people only wanted $10 for it. So he decided to buy it after the man he’d been speaking with assured him that it does work.

I had slept in and by the time I got up my husband was busy hooking the “new” receiver to TV, Multi-CD player (holds 200 cds!) and speakers.

That was a nice surprise … especially when we discovered that it did work! Now if only someone would “leave’ a few jars of the best face wrinkle creams for my dry skin outside my door that would really make my day!

We listened to music all afternoon as we did things around the house and it was great! Finally … our TV can have a bigger break each day while I listen to music or the radio.

It’s been so long since I was able to easily listen to the music that I love. Music also seems to make me feel a bit better when my Crohn’s is acting up … so who knows, maybe this will help my health a little bit too.

I’d say that the price of $10 that my husband paid for the receiver was a good deal when it made me so happy.

Car crashed right in front of my house!

August 22, 2009 by Tricia

Wow! Someone just had a car accident right outside my house! That’s never happened before!

I was sitting in my living room doing some work on one of my sites and BANG! Crash! and then the dog started barking. LOL Of course, our front doors open so she could see everything as it happened … hmmm I guess she’s a witness.

I think the accident happened because one of our neighbors has a lot of relatives over today and naturally the relatives parked their cars on both sides of our busy street (in No Parking areas!) so it made the street narrower … and cars around here tend to speed by … I’ve even seen some try to pass one another. So I suspect someone was doing some daredevil driving and didn’t judge how narrow the street had become because of all the parked cars!

I pity the poor guy the next time he needs to get an auto insurance quote! He crashed right into a parked car. How exactly I don’t know, but it did a lot of damage.

It’s been interesting around here this week between my Redneck neighbors moving out, the big (tornado) storm and now an accident feet from my house!
