Wandering Husband

February 21, 2006 by Tricia

Oh no, not the kind of wandering that you’re thinking. I mean wandering, as in he literally goes outside of our house, presumably on a mission to do something and disappears for hours!

You see, my husband is what is known as a Social Butterfly. He is kind. He is sweet. He sees humor in just about anything. He is a compulsive talker. He’s the kind of guy that will talk to you about anything and everything, whether you want to talk or not. LOL

Whenever he’s outside our house he’s always spotting someone on the street and yelling (and I mean yelling) “Hi Neighbor!” and then running over to them to see how they are or what they are doing. He’s like a friendly dog.

When he leaves the house I never know how long he’s going to be. You would think that if he left to go to the corner store which is two blocks away from our home that he would return within say ten minutes. Nope- not very often. He usually finds someone to stop and talk to on the way to the store, at the store, AND on the way back home. Sometimes a trip to the corner store can take an hour.

At this moment I’m waiting for my forever wandering husband. At approximately 5:30 pm he went to visit one of our neighbors who happens to be an electrician. You see we are trying to finish up one of our many renovation tasks. We are putting in ceiling lights in two of our upstairs bedrooms, and moving the electrical switch in the bathroom so that it’s closer to the door. This project was started two years ago!

Did I tell you my husband is the worlds greatest procrastinator too?

Now, I tend to do my share of the renovation work that we decide to do. I come up with the ideas so I am the chief designer, visionary, and decorator. I do the majority of plastering, painting, staining, varnishing, sanding and finishing touches. But I don’t do electrical work … and neither does my husband it seems!

Two years ago he spent a good month putting new wiring in through the attic and down through the walls of our house, so that we could replace some old knob and tube wiring, and put new lighting in some of our rooms. We purchased the fancy ceiling lighting and set everything up. All that is left to do is to attach the new wiring to the electrical box in the basement and have it inspected and approved by an electrician. Once that’s done we’ll install the lights which I certainly hope work, after all I purchased them two years ago and likely won’t be able to return them if they don’t!

So, for two years approximately 90% of the work has been done. Why I’ve waiting so long for my new lighting upstairs I don’t know. It’s not like I haven’t asked my husband to speak with our neighbor and work towards getting the wiring hooked up and approved.

So that’s what my husband is doing now. He’s gone over to our neighbors- who by the way talks even MORE than my husband does, to see if he can get him to come over and look at the wiring job and show him how to do the final hook-up.

It’s going on 7:00 pm. My wandering husband is 5 houses away- I think! He might be visiting one of our other neighbors by now or standing on the corner talking with people passing by for all I know. Either way he’s been gone for an hour and a half! LOL

I’ll be sending out the search party soon!

Update: 7:20 pm, my laughing husband came home without the neighbor that he’d gone to retrieve. He states he was stuck there helping them. He’s mumbling something about moving things around in their basement. We’re both laughing. He says “you know Tony”, and I say “yeah you’re just like him, the two of you are the worst people in the world to put together and expect to get anything done ’cause of all the talking”. Gosh, what am I gonna do with my wandering husband?

Busy on my Computer

February 15, 2006 by Tricia

Wow! For a person that’s been home due to illness I sure have been busy.

I spent the day today cruising the internet for interesting sites and stories to write about, or to link to my sites. I also spent a bit of time at Bl0gClicker and Bl0gExplosion surfing fellow bloggers websites for fun of course but also to earn credits so that my two blogs will be shown in their rotation more often too.

While I was doing all of this surfing and clicking I also found the time to answer a bunch of email. I run 4 mailing lists and have one very large 10 year old website, plus another new website (that I’m slowly working on). My work on the Internet could be a full time job if I let it. Unfortunately I haven’t found a way to make an income out of it yet … but if I do, look out. ๐Ÿ™‚

While I was busy on the net today I also found three blogs that one of my Internet friends has created. I know Melissa through our mutual interest in Herpetoculture – the keeping of reptiles and amphibians as pets. She’s always a step ahead of me it seems. She has several large websites, and now It looks like she started blogging last March. I only just started a few weeks ago! I’m behind. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve added all three of Melissa’s blogs to my blogroll. You might be interested in visiting Lizards in Scarves – a knitting blog with a twist- she has pictures of her iguana’s with her knitted scarves on them. She also created another blog called Eggs in Hats. She seems to have come up with that blog when faced with the dilemma of her turtles laying infertile eggs yet again and feeling guilty over her pets wasted energy. The site is quite amusing. Check it out.

Her first blog seems to have started out like this one- a blog to write out thoughts that just don’t fit on the websites we already run. Melissa’s Miscellani blog is quite interesting to read.

I guess I didn’t do enough today because something compelled me to update my huge website a couple of hours ago! It took me three hours to finish what I was doing … and now I need to go to bed. Ya think? It’s 4:46 am. Yawn.

The one thing that I didn’t do today that I wanted to do was get over to a forum called HerpCenter that I moderate on. Well I haven’t been there for quite a while due to my illness. But since I’ve been busier behind the scenes lately it’s time I get my butt over there and start answering some questions and helping others. I feel bad that I haven’t been there in quite a long time, but as I explained to the owner of the site, when I answer posts my answers are very personal and when I’m not feeling all that well it’s hard to put your all into helping another person. When my abdomen is aching- if I’m able to sit up, I’d rather be fooling around with code and graphics and updating my site it seems. That’s what always happens anyways.

Maybe I need a laptop computer? Do you think I could type on it while lying down? ๐Ÿ™‚

Ok … enough rambling. I’ve got to get me to bed!

Paying Bills

February 13, 2006 by Tricia

Don’t you hate paying bills? I do.

There’s something about parting with that hard earned money in my bank account that I have trouble with. I know, I know – I’m paying for services that I need like heat and electricity, and ones that I want such as cable. It’s just a quirk of mine.

Paying the bills is a bit harder for me these days though. I’ve been off work since the beginning of December due to my possible Crohn’s disease, and while I’ve been receiving sick pay it’s not quite the same amount of money coming in as when I’m working.

Due to my quirk of just plain not enjoying paying bills (does anyone?), and my current financial situation I left it until the last minute to pay the bills this time round. Today was the day, hence my mini-rant.

I approached my desk earlier this evening with a mix of dread and determination. The pile of envelopes was larger than I thought it was. The theme from Jaws was playing in my head. Duhdun duh dun duhdunduhdunduhdun … and somehow I got through the experience without screaming or passing out.

The bills are paid! I’m still alive! Plus there is still a bit of money in the bank … for the next round. It won’t end will it?

How do you pay your bills? Do you wait until the deadline and pay them will dread as I do? Or do you pay them with joy the minute you get them?

Hemp for Breakfast

February 4, 2006 by Tricia

Well I never thought I’d be eating hemp for breakfast, but that’s just what I did this morning.

Yesterday, my husband and I went out to a bulk food store and we were looking in the bulk cereal section. Hmmm “what’s this?” Hemp Granola? Granola with hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds and other goodies. “what the heck, lets try it!”

So, this morning I poured some of the hemp granola into a small bowl. One thing about granola- you don’t need a big serving.

I added:

  • a small amount of Demerara brown sugar,
  • some raspberry flavoured cranberries,
  • poured on some milk
  • dolloped two teaspoons of berry flavored yogurt on top

Then I stirred it together. Wow! That was good.

I’m not much of a breakfast person but I’ve been trying to eat healthier. I’m not sure how this is going to sit though. I have crohn’s and fiber is not always a person with inflammatory bowel diseases best friend. So far so good though.

How was your breakfast? What did you have this morning?

Spring is coming!

February 2, 2006 by Tricia

It’s February 2nd and it’s ground hog day. Ground hogs all over Canada have predicted an early spring. Yeahhhhhhhhh!

I have my own spring predictors right here in my yard though. My roses. It was such a nice day out today, my husband decided to take down our Christmas lights. A short while after he went outside he came in excitedly and said “you’d better come look at your roses!”. I asked him ” why, is something wrong???”. He just said- “come and see and bring the camera”.

Charles Albanel rugosa rose with leaf buds Feb. 2nd 2006 It might be a bit hard to see in this photo, but my roses – all that I checked- have tiny red leaf buds starting to grow! Wow! I’ve never seen leaf buds so early. Gee, it’s usually at least sometime in April before I start to see leaf buds on my roses. (see larger picture for more detail)

I can’t believe it! It’s been such a warm winter here in Toronto. I think November and the very beginning of December was colder and more winter like than the rest of December and January. My garden is usually covered in at least a foot of snow at this time of year, and it’s usually freezing!

Now that I have leaf buds on my roses we are bound to get a very cold snap. Especially now that I said it, too!

In the late fall my garden was covered in layers and layers of leaves. We gathered about 40 or more bags of leaves from various neighbours and poured the leaves onto the garden beds. The roses were mounded with a mix of peat and soil first. Then after the leaf topping we put burlap around most of our roses.

Since I can’t actually see the ground of most of my flower beds since they are covered in leaves, I’ll just have to assume that my tulips and other bulbs are probably poking their head out of the earth and growing leaves too.

Hmmm my crocus’ usually come up out of the lawn in mid to late March and I usually count these as my first signs of spring. I’ll bet ya that my crocus’ come up in the next week or two if this weather holds!

To all those enjoying beautiful unseasonably warm weather- rejoice! Spring is just about here. To those that are still buried under the snow and shivering in the cold .. I feel for you, but spring will come to you soon too.

Spring! Wow. I’m starting to think about my garden now.

If you want to see an almost up to date list of what’s growing in my garden see my gardenweb members page.

’til next time,
