Strange Weather

October 10, 2006 by Tricia

I think my husbands in love with a weather man!

It was about five years ago when I first began to suspect that my husband was watching the weather on TV for more than the daily weather report.

I started noticing that he’d pay more attention to the weather report when a certain weather man was on. No. strike that. I think what made me notice his interest was that when other weather men or women did the daily weather he’d switch channels, but he wouldn’t when this particular meteorologist was on.

If Anwar wasn’t on Global he’d switch to another news program or to some other TV show that was on. I’d ask him:

“Why’d you switch the channel? Don’t you want to know what tomorrow going to be like?”

“Nah, it’s ok. let’s watch this.”

Meteorologist Anwar Knight When Anwar, yes that’s the meteorologists name, was doing his weather forcast Chris would watch the TV set intently. He’d get this funny little smile on his face and he’d even … giggle on occasion. WTF?

“Ok Chris, why are you smiling when he’s doing the weather?” I asked one night.

“He’s just funny. I like him.” Chris replied.

“Yah, you like him. Right.”

One day we were in a drug store, and as we approached the cash registers Chris suddenly got all excited and started moving to a particular cashiers line. “I think it’s him!” he said with a smile. “Who?” “It’s the weather guy, you know, Anwar!”.

Chris stood patiently behind him line waiting for his opportunity to strike up a conversation. I can’t remember exactly what he eventually said to him but I think he told him how funny he thinks he is when he does the weather and some other mundane conversation. Anwar clearly was in a hurry or perhaps he recognized the look in my husbands eye and wanted to make a hasty exit.

Now I’ve seen Chris when he’s met celebrities before, and far more famous ones at that, and he usually seems much calmer about it. We’ve run into Getty Lee, the lead singer from Rush, in the liquor store, and Chris even delivered products to his house when he used to deliver non-perishable grocery products way back when.

As the years went by I got used to Chris’ habit of watching this particular weatherman. In fact I generally found it pretty funny, and I’d tend to watch Chris more than the weather report, because he had such a look of adoration in his eyes whenever Anwar’s face was on our television screen.

Sometime during the past year Anwar disappeared.

We stopped watching weather reports. I never new if the next day would be sunny or if it would rain.

Then, one day, Chris was watching CityTV and the weather report started. Chris was about to switch channels when all of a sudden he got that little smile on his face. Yes, Anwar had switch jobs and now he works for CityTV.

My husbands happy because he can now indulge in his little Man Crush, and now I know that it’s going to be cloudy tomorrow with a chance of rain in the evening.

All is well in our little world.

Does anyone else’s husband have a little man crush goin’ on? Are there any women out there that think they’re a little bit in love with another woman on TV? Let me know. I’m sure I’m not alone in this. I’m not, right?

*Chris is aware of this post and it has his stamp of approval. He’s not afraid that he’s less of a man because he’s got a little Man Crush. Yep that’s my guy- secure, confident, and a little in love with a TV personality.

Coffee and Drool

October 9, 2006 by Tricia

I’m an idiot.

Doc Mom, sign me up for your idiot of the week would you?

Chris and I went to his parents home in Brantford Ontario (home of the Telephone, and Wayne Gretzky’s home town). We were there to celebrate our Canadian Thanks Giving.

It was a typical holiday family gathering – parents, aunts and uncles and siblings … uh no, there wasn’t any siblings. Chris’ two sisters and their husbands were supposed to be there but they didn’t show up.

We visited for a while then we sat down to a meal of –

  • Turkey
  • Maple Ham – I do NOT like Maple, I’m not a good Canadian
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Mushed I mean mashed turnips – not a fav
  • A combo dish of baked candied turnip and sweet potatoes
  • Two types of stuffing – I luv stuffing (get your minds out of the gutter)
  • Carrots
  • Three types of cranberry (jellied, whole and some kind of cranberry and marmalade mix?)
  • some red wine
  • A tiny slice of Chocolate caramel brownie cheese cake and a scoop of maple (yuck!) walnut ice cream.

Oh yes I also had a beer before dinner and one after it too.

After a bit more visiting, we snuck into a neighbors house that is under construction to see how the huge house was coming along. When I say snuck, I mean just about everyone that was at the dinner went to the empty shell of a house. Then Chris’ dad decided he wanted to take us to lovely downtown Brantford to show us the changes that are taking place there. I took some pictures since it has a quaint small town feel to it.

Then we visited for a little longer and then since we were taking Chris’ Uncle back home to Toronto we decided to hit the road.

We stopped at a Tim Hortons to get some coffee for the trip as we were leaving town. I don’t like drinking my coffee when it’s hot. I kind of like it best luke warm. So I opened it up, and sipped a bit. I was sitting in the backseat and I didn’t have a cup holder so I rested the coffee cup between my legs.

I almost never sleep in the car but I guess the turkey, full tummy, wine and beer got to me and I fell asleep for at least half an hour.

I woke up when my husband pulled off the highway and headed towards his Uncles home. My head was leaning far to the right. I blinked a few times “Where am I?” and “Why is my mouth wet?” Ew I was drooling! Yeah, my head was at such an angle that I must have drooled while I was asleep. I drooled enough that my shoulder was a bit damp too. Ew.

But that’s not why I’m an idiot.

Remember that coffee?

No, it didn’t spill. It must have continued to stand while it rested between my legs and I slept, BUT and this is a big but, it either sloshed a bit or the hot coffee steam made my pants wet.

Yeah, I woke up and discovered that I had Coffee Crotch. LOL And no I didn’t pee myself. Yes I’m sure. It was just the front and a bit of my pant legs that were damp and smelling strongly of coffee. Needless to say I had a shower and a change of clothes when we got home. No more coffee crotch for me.

I’m always doing some silly thing. Hopefully that was the dumbest thing I end up doing this month.

The Brazilian takes his leave

October 6, 2006 by Tricia

I just realized that our Brazilian boarder is going home tomorrow and I haven’t even written a rant post about him. What a change.

It’s not that he’s been a perfect boarder, but he certainly was better than the first two that we had. The first boarder slept all the time and seemed depressed. We just couldn’t connect with him at all. The second boarder was manipulative and lied continuously. I still have nightmares featuring the second boarder. **Shudder**

The only problems that we’ve had with this Brazilian student has been that he goes out with his new friends a lot lately every night. Now that’s not bad, in fact I kind of like it because we have the benefit of having a boarder and the extra income but the boarder isn’t around. No, what bothers me about him being out is that he doesn’t call and let us know whether he’ll be coming home for dinner or not. His room and board includes dinner so I’m obligated to provide a meal for him, but it’s kind of hard to figure out whether I should be planning a meal for two – me and Chris – or for three when he doesn’t let me know whether he’ll be home.

The other complaint is that all of the products he uses are extremely scented from his deodorant to his shaving cream. That’s a problem because I seem to be very sensitive to scented products. I get immediate intense migraines when I’m subjected to scented products like perfume or cologne, and occasionally I start having trouble breathing and have to use my puffer.

By tomorrow evening we’ll have our home back to ourselves. We had wanted to get another short stay boarder but we haven’t had any luck with the “English studies” agencies. None of them seem to be looking for home stay parents right now. I wanted to have another boarder for October and November and then have the house to ourselves for the whole month of December. I really don’t want to have a homesick student around at Christmas time.

Monday is our Canadian Thanks Giving day. On Sunday we’ll be going to my husbands parents house for a Thanks Giving get together, but I’m not sure what we’re doing on Monday. I might invite my sister and her kids over and cook us a nice Turkey with mashed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes and carrots, and peas. If I do that, I suppose we’ll have a pumpkin pie too. Yum. Yeah I think I’m going to do it.

Are there any other Canadians out there that are going to family gatherings this weekend?

Crazy neighbors

October 2, 2006 by Tricia

I think I’ve been experiencing a bit of writers block these days, or perhaps it’s just the lack of material to write about. I’m still sick – of course, so I’m not getting out much.

My neighbor Sofie is the only one stalking me these days. Shelli gave up on that venture on Friday. Sofie is the elderly Greek lady who lives next door to me. We took our air-conditioner out of the window the other day so now she can see me sitting at the computer from her dining room window again. It’s kind of creepy to look out your window and see someone peering at you several times a day.

When she’s not looking for me via the window she’s knocking on my kitchen window, or worse, I’ll be walking into my kitchen and see a little wrinkled face staring at me. I just about jump out of my skin every time she does that. You’d think I’d be used to it by now since it happens at least 5 times a week, but I think that’s one of those things that you just never get used to.

I know she’s just a lonely old lady, but it’s seriously creepy!

I think I know why we have an increasing number of rats in our backyards lately too. BTW I never saw a rat around until last year, mice a few times yes, but rats – no. Sofie goes into her backyard and distributes her table scraps in her garden. Not just things that will decompose easily either such as fruit peelings or veggie scraps, no she’s burying things like meat and bone in her garden too. Naturally scavengers such as squirrels, rats and mice find these goodies. I’ve found small bone pieces in my garden and on my grass a number of times and now I know they’re coming from Sofie’s yard. It’s probably the squirrels finding them and then bringing them over to my yard to bury their treasure.

I’ll never get rid of the rats now!

Speaking of rats, my husband Chris played a joke on some of our other neighbors a week or so ago. Except he didn’t tell me about his little prank. So I’m sitting at home, on the computer probably, when I hear this furious pounding on our door. I open it up and it’s one of the guys from a few houses over.

Now, this guy happens to be gay, and he lives with his partner and two boarders. We’re friendly with them and we’ve been over to their place for drinks and they’ve been over to our house too. We also help each other occasionally with various household tasks like helping move things or helping with renovating etc.

We’ve got a big Canadian flag hanging on a pole outside our house, and they have a Canadian gay pride flag hanging outside their house. Ours was stolen a couple of years ago. It ended up being some of our friends playing a joke on us. They were going to cut up our flag and send us pieces of it in a ransom note! Until they saw a note that I posted in our window basically ranting and shaming the neighborhood for such a dirty deed. They felt bad so they gave it back unharmed.

These two guys knew this story and we’ve joked back and forth about stealing each others flags and we’ve said that our friends should have switched our flags instead of just stealing ours way back when they played their trick on us.

So back to the pounding on the door and A standing there looking furious. I opened the door and asked him what was wrong since he looked so upset. He said “Is Chris home?”, I replied that Chris was out walking with our boarder. “Which way did they go?” I told him that I didn’t know, but I thought they were off on a long walk so they could be anywhere.

He then asked me if Chris had taken their flag down and put it on their backyard patio. I didn’t know anything about this and I told him so. He seemed very upset though and he wanted to get in his truck and go and find Chris. At this point even if I knew where Chris was I doubt I would have told him because I was starting to imagine my husband being run down by a pick up truck over a flag prank.

When Chris got him I asked him if he did something to the guys flag and he said he’d taken it down, rolled it up nicely and tucked it in their backyard – a few days before. I guess the guys aren’t all that observant if they didn’t notice that it was missing earlier than that day. I told Chris he’d better go over and apologize to A since he seemed so mad.

Chris went and talked with them and came back saying that A wasn’t mad, but I don’t know, he sure seemed mad to me. I don’t think we’ll be playing tricks with their flag again! Now they’ll probably try to get us back though.

The Front Garden

October 1, 2006 by Tricia

It’s Doctor Moms last day here. I’m so sad, she’s been a great roomie and we’ve had a lot of fun visiting with each other. I’m hoping that all of my visitors have gone over to visit with her too. You can still vote for the Idiot of the week. Look over her last few posts to rate the Idiot selection and then select one to vote for. She’ll announce the winner on Monday. Go on, go vote.

I thought that I’d show you a couple of the flowering plants that I grow in my front garden bed, and in our planted boulevard.

The flowerbeds at the front of our house were more of an after thought after we finished putting in raised flower beds with interlocking easy stone, and installed a patio in the backyard. We used some of the left over stones to create raised beds in the front.

The backyard garden was supposed to be our delightfully special garden, but the front has become a rival to it as it’s matured.

Here’s a photo of Autumn Joy Sedum.

autumnjoysedum

This plant starts out looking like a green succulent, but usually by the end of July the flower stalks begin to grow. As the flower buds develop the heads of the flower stalks are green at first, then they become a whitish colour. Personally I think they look a bit like cauliflower at this point. By the end of August the blossoms to be are turning a nice pink and the bees are starting to notice them. In fact they are often covered in bees.

By mid-September all of the tiny flower buds begin to open and they go from pink to this very pretty magenta colour. This colour will darken as the days get cooler. By the end of October the flowers will be finished and will have dried out. I think that they look sort of ornamental around this time when they are dried out, sort of like dried flowers – beige in colour but still interesting.

A few of the sunflowers that I grow in my front Boulevard Garden bed:

Mr. Fab seems to think I’m freakishly tall (I’m not, I’m only 5′ 10 1/2″), but if he saw my sunflowers he’d realize that they are the ones that are freakishly tall. Some of them must be 14 or more feet tall.

We planted our front boulevard flower bed with Siberian Iris’, Salvia, marigolds, alysium, dahlia’s, daylilies, delphinium, malva, cosmos, peonies, spring bulbs, four types of sunflowers, and we have a Morning Glory vine growing on the “No Parking Sign” that’s in the boulevard flower bed.

From April until at least the end of October there is always something blooming in that flower bed. We planted it more for our neighbors enjoyment than our own, and they all seem to love it. Plus, we are the only ones with a planted boulevard for several blocks, so our house is very easy to find if a friend or relative is trying to find it.
