Shopping spree

April 9, 2007 by Tricia

The other day after my doctors appointment my husband and went shopping. Chris always has Mondays off. It’s great for him. We always have a long weekend, plus if either of us needs to make appointments his having Mondays off is quite convenient.

I went on a shopping spree!

I’ve needed to get some new clothes for a while. Since I’m mostly at home I didn’t need to get anything fancy. I just wanted a couple pairs of pants and I wanted to get a new pair of pajamas … well ok a T-shirt nightie. Comfy stuff.

So we went to the shopping mecca called Walmart. They’ve built a new super store close to where the previous Walmart had been. It’s huge!

I ended up getting two pairs of pants, a few t-shirts, three nighties and uh a bra. I needed that stuff!

We also picked up some groceries. I’ve never minded picking up dried goods – cereals and packaged foods like that, or canned and bottled items, but this store is more like a grocery store now. The old Walmart had a freezer section along with the rows of packaged food items, but it didn’t sell fresh food. This one does.

This last time and the time before I didn’t hesitate to get some fruit, veggies and salad makings. They were in good shape, and the price was right. I have however been hesitant to purchase fresh meat from Walmart. You know there’s some stores that you just don’t buy fresh goods from. For me, one of them is a grocery store called Food Basics here in Canada. They have great prices but their meat sucks. It seems to be off a lower grade than in other grocery stores.

So … does anyone purchase fresh meats at Walmart?

I did notice that they had some name brands – possibly some those of you from the US and other countries might not be familiar with like Maple Leaf which a good brand maker of meat products. The prices were reasonable and the chicken, beef and pork looked fresh and of good quality. I was tempted, but hesitated. I thought it might be best to ask my readers opinion first. I hate to waste money.

Who buys meat at Walmart? Is it good? Have you been happy with the quality?

Browsing Bestpricedfurniture.com for redecorating ideas

April 9, 2007 by Tricia

Spring has me in it’s grip and I think I’m starting to go stir crazy. I want to get out and work in my garden but we’ve had a spell of cool weather so I can’t really get out there and do too much just yet. Instead, my mind has started working on our reno projects.

With any luck we’ll have our living room and dining room reno finished this year. Yes, I said this year. I’d love to say it will be finished in a week or two but every time I do say that it doesn’t happen. However, it had better happen before the end of the year! LOL

Being optimistic that our living room and dining room will be complete soon, I’ve started to think about how I might redecorate. Co-incidentally I’ve been asked to write an article of an online store called Best Priced Furniture. Great timing!

I like the way that the Bestpricedfurniture.com site is laid out. It’s very easy to shop for different types of furniture or office items by browsing the categories listed on the left hand side of the page. You could also select any of the tabs at the top of each page to reach customer service, do an advanced search for a particular item, or browse the sites best sellers and clearance items.

One of the items that I’ve been keeping my eye out for ever since we purchased this house has been bar stools. We haven’t begun this portion of our living room/dining room reno, but we’d like to cut out a portion of the wall between the kitchen and dining room. I don’t know what you’d call that sort of design but I guess when it’s complete it would look like an open serving window between the two rooms.

If we do this I’d like to place a wide enough counter in the cut out area so that it could be used for serving dishes easily, and also to create a place where a couple of people could perhaps sit on bar stools and eat breakfast or brunch and perhaps even talk with someone in the kitchen as they work.

Now, one reason why we haven’t already picked up a couple of bar stools for this future serving area is because we’ve been very picky about the look of the stools. We just haven’t found anything that we’ve liked so far. That might have changed!

barstool.jpg Take a look at the Montello Swivel bar stool that I just found at Best Priced Furniture. The bar stools would be in the dining room and we have a 1920’s era dining room set – table, chairs, and buffet – and this style of bar stool would look lovely with the antique dining room set.

If you are thinking of redecorating a room, getting a new bed or bedroom set have a look at BestPricedFurniture.com. I’m certain that you’ll be pleased with the quality and variety of the furniture items that they sell. Oh and don’t forget – they don’t just sell furnishings for the home. You can purchase office furnishings at their online store as well as patio furniture and rugs.

My best friend is …

April 8, 2007 by Tricia

Julie, over at Just Julie wrote a great post about a woman that she met after talking to her online.

The two quickly became the best of friends and Julie wrote about her in a post called Who’s your Best Friend. Her post got me thinking – Who’s my best friend?

Well, I’d have to say without a doubt that it’s the man that is sitting near me eating his breakfast, with his stinky feet on the table.

Chris and Sofie guitar lesson He’s a great guy. Other than his love for me, his next greatest passion is playing guitar. This is a photo of him fooling around with my elderly stalker … I mean neighbor Sofie. We gave a copy of that photo to her kids. They love it.

Chris and I met back when we both worked in the jewelery trade. I had my own business cutting designs on jewelry with my diamond cutting machine, making molds and gold plating jewelry and other objects. Chris worked as a jeweler for another trades person.

He noticed me first. I shared office space with my sister who was and still is an engraver, and he’d occasionally come into our office to get jewelry engraved for his companies clients. He never spoke to me when he’d visit the office, and I was busy doing my own work at the back so I can’t say that I ever really noticed him at that time. Hey, it was a busy office!

It turned out that we hung out with some of the same people in the Jewelery trade. In fact, he was taking a gem setting course at the college that was being taught by our mutual friend Paul. Paul was a partier back then, and I guess Chris and I both were too.

I had gone with Paul one evening while he taught his class and then we were going to go a party at a friends later. It turned out that Chris was also going to the party so we all went together and somehow I ended up spending the whole time at the party talking to Chris and even singing with him as he played the piano that was in the house.

Chris and I have been together ever since! He’s been with me literally through thick and thin. We’ve both gone back to school while we’ve been together, as well as started new careers. We have financial troubles and health troubles and still here we are.

He’s been very supportive of me every time I’ve gotten ill and particularly through this, perhaps the worst crohn’s flare that I’ve been through.

I know that there are many husbands and wives out that there that wouldn’t say their spouse is their best friend. Some might even think that it’s wrong to feel that way. However, Chris and I can spend days together and not get sick of each other ever. We always have a good time – whether we are simple watching TV, or working on one of our home renovation projects together. Yes, we argue every now and then but not all that much compared to some folks.

He knows my thoughts, my likes and dislikes, how to make me happy when I’m down. So that’s why Chris, my husband is also my best friend.

Who’s yours?

A visit to the pain doctor

April 6, 2007 by Tricia

This past Monday I had yet another appointment with my Pain doctor. She’s really a family practice doctor who happens to specialize in pain. She treats a number of people, even so rather well known people – so she’s gained a good reputation as a pain specialist.

She’s disappointed that the many pain meds that she’s put me on haven’t been helping all that much.

We aren’t going to try the synthetic marijuana again. When I told her that I was out of it for a few days after trying my first one, and that the same thing happened when I tried it again she thought the side effects were too much. It’s surprising though, considering that I’m on some very heavy pain medication you’d think the nabilone wouldn’t have hit me so hard. Oh well.

She also talked about weaning me off some of the pain meds that I’m currently on – again, since they haven’t had spectacular results. When she said she might take me off some of my meds I was terrified. They have helped me. Much more than she realizes.

I’ve been in pain on and off since 1992. I never had any pain medication at all. So that means I had no form of relief until I met this pain doctor in January 2006. With this latest Crohn’s flare that’s being going on since the fall of 2004 I was in terrible terrible pain. It was just getting worse and worse. Before being started on some pain meds in January of 2006 I could barely function. I was just lying on the couch all day. Not being the tiniest bit productive.

When I started taking the pain medication I got up off the couch. I started this blog and within a few months several others. I found a way to make money from home. Now, while I’m still not all that physically active, at least I can tolerate sitting up and moving around my own home. I can think more clearly too. When the pain wasn’t being controlled everything was just a fog and my concentration levels were very low.

So the pain meds didn’t help me get back to work. Unfortunately not. However, they did help me get a bit of my life back, not as much as I hoped, but through my work on the computer and the earnings I’m bringing in I feel like a contributing member of this household again.

I don’t think she’d ever completely take me off my medications. Well, if I really started to improve and get better certainly I wouldn’t need them anymore, but while I’m still sick I’d better stay on some. I can’t imagine going back to being unproductive and in constant severe pain 24/7 again. I’d lose my ability to make some income too.

Yes I still have some days when I’m in severe pain, and most days there’s at least moderate pain. The pain meds have cut my pain levels by at least 50% when they are working. Unfortunately, Crohn’s is a disorder that affects your digestive system and I know for a fact that my body doesn’t always absorb the pain medications that I take. How … well lets just keep it simple and say pain meds float. Ok? So, on the days that the pain meds move too quickly through my system it’s literally like I haven’t taken any pain meds at all.

I think after explaining the “digestive problem” to her, and that the pain meds have helped to some degree she understands. She did take me off the nabilone that I only tried twice. As I said the side effects were really bad and literally put me back on the couch with a spinning head and blurred vision, and she took me off another medication called Tramacet which is a mild morphine derivitate – similar to tylenol with codeine (I’m allergic to codeine so I couldn’t take tylenol #3, and this med was like tyl #3).

Well see how I do without the tramacet. It definitely didn’t do as much as the other and much stronger pain meds that I’m on.

Maybe I should put a disclaimer at the end of my posts? “This post has been brought to you by the benifits of strong pain meds.” It might help explain some of my stranger posts. LOL

My niece has a wicked sense of humor

April 6, 2007 by Tricia

Earlier today I received a nice email from my niece wishing us a happy Easter. She’s the first and only of any of my niece’s or nephews to have gotten married so far.

I was just thinking that it’s become clear that she’s inherited my side of the families sense of humor, especially her fathers. With her Easter greeting she sent a photo that I’d like to post, but I’m afraid it might offend as many people as would find it funny. My niece is an animal lover herself, but she sent a photo of a dog that looks quite a bit like her own with a rabbit in it’s mouth – well you can really only see the rabbit ears. Sick humor huh?

I guess her sense of humor became apparent when, at the end of her wedding ceremony last year she and her new husband walked down the aisle to the the Star Wars theme. LOL They both love all the star wars movies, but even so, I’ve never thought of the theme as wedding music!

She’s also the one who sent me photo’s of her cats dressed up in Halloween costumes. In her note she decided that her male cat, Hunter, must be gay because he seemed to like the princess costume better than the more masculine Dracula costume that she’d purchased for him.

I wonder what she’ll come up with next?
