Grow Your Own – The Dream of Self Sufficiency

October 8, 2012 by Trish

Grow Your Own – The Dream of Self Sufficiency

Autumn veg

When that electricity bill lands on your doormat as you’re about to leave for the job you hate do you ever long for The Good Life – growing and rearing your own food for the table and living free from the binds of modern living? Here’s our guide to the ultimate self sufficiency dream.

Land

If you’re based in the UK these are interesting times for those wanted to by land. With a growing housing crisis and a stagnant economy, the coalition Government is temporarily scrapping planning permission laws for house extensions and making some significant noises to suggest a relaxation of planning laws and possible development of green belt land. Buying a plot of land now might prove to be a significant investment if approvals for building become easier to get in the future.

To achieve our self sufficiency dream for a family of four, we reckon we’ll need a couple acres of land.

Shelter

Ideally you’d want an eco-home – straw built or timber frame perhaps, with low energy requirements. However, most properties with the land you need to go self sufficient are rather run down, draughty farm building, so pack plenty of thick socks and jumpers.

Food

Surely one of your top questions should be, what will we eat and will there be enough? You’re going to need to use you land carefully to ensure you have a food all year round. Vegetable patches will represent the majority of your crop and you will want to rotate crops each year.

It can take a lot of back breaking digging to get the ground ready for your vegetables and will you have the energy for digging on vegetables alone? You could kill two birds with one stone and get a pig. Pigs are nature’s answer to the rotavator, churning up the ground as they snuffle around for food. If you move your pig pen to wherever you need new ground churning up, they’ll do the hard work for you.

Pigs, chicken, vegetables, fruit trees and knowledge of how and where to find wild food are all vital for the self sufficient family

Water

Equally as important as food, the ultimate self sufficiency dreamer dreams of a borehole and a well, living off water pumped from their own land. Another important and free source of water is rain. Catching rain water is the perfect way to get water for crops and washing.

Power

The looming energy crisis is a global concern and responsibility. Renewable energy is the only future and massive and vital investments are being made to in such sectors as offshore wind power. These macro-scale projects trickle down into technological developments on a micro-scale and home wind turbines have become an excellent way of powering your home for free – free from those electricity bills. And with feed-in-tariffs, you might even find you get paid for energy you don’t use.

To keep the romance in the self sufficiency dream, be sure to install a wood burning stove for those chilling winter nights – you can even cook your vegetable and pork casserole on the top!

Out With The Old – The Therapeutic Benefits Of Regular Wardrobe Clean Outs

September 30, 2012 by Trish

Seasons change and times change. Changes in life can without a doubt be difficult, but in certain situations it can bring forth a great sense of renewal if you feel unsatisfied or monotonous. Believe it or not, but regularly rewarding yourself with a cleansed wardrobe can therapeutically benefit you and give you a new outlook on life.

Having to wake up for work in the morning with the same clothing options in your closet month after month can become tedious and boring. If you have come to a point to where you’ve tried every possible combination of skirts and blouses, your jeans have snags in them and your favorite purse no longer zips, then maybe it is time to purge and refresh your wardrobe. Neglecting your wardrobe and accepting it even if it does not meet your true personal expectations can drain you of your energy and self esteem.

Although you do not have to completely clean out everything in your closet if you so choose not to, start with clothing that you no longer wear. This can include shirts that are missing buttons or pants you are no longer able to fit. Also, remove clothing that you wore at a difficult period of time in your life, such as a divorce or family death. Casting these clothes out of your closet will also cast out any emotional baggage and ties. You would be amazed at how much better you will feel.

As stated previously, times change. Acid washed jeans and tie-dye shirts are a thing of the past. Getting rid of outdated clothing will make you feel more modern and youthful.

You could sell your old items to a second hand shop and get a small amount of money for them to put towards your new clothing and fashion accessories. You could also throw them into a bag and take it to the nearest donation center. Knowing that you are helping a less fortunate individual will bring about a rewarding sense of self satisfaction. You will also feel less wasteful. The clothing in your closet can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars, you definitely do not want to completely throw these items into the trash.

Cleaning out your wardrobe will provide you with a sense of freshness and freedom to take on any new style that you may want to try, but never possessed the courage to do so before. Become creative and try out new accessories that you never wore before. Become bold and daring with different colors and patterns. Obtain ideas from your favorite fashion magazines and create different looks that you like.

Once you fill your closet with a brand spanking new funky wardrobe, you are going to feel empowered and ready to take on the world in your new clothing and accessories.

Of course personal budget must be taken into consideration when changing your wardrobe. However, you can find some pretty amazing things on clearance racks. Change you wardrobe whenever you feel the need for a fresh start and when you are financially stable to do so.

I wonder if I can fix my couch?

September 27, 2012 by Tricia

I think it’s time to think about getting new furniture. We have leather couches and unfortunately, we let our dog on the couch and she’s not easy on the furniture.

Our couch and easy chair are starting to get a little worn. Not too bad, but enough that it’s time to either stop having the dog lie on the couch or perhaps look up some leather repair kits info and see if I can do some repair myself. Who knows maybe I can get the couch and chair to look almost new again. That would be nice!

I’m in no big hurry to repair the couch and easy chair, it’s just another task on the list. We’re still renovating but once the renovations are finished I will be looking at the decor with a critical eye. If I can’t repair the couch and easy chair I’ll be moving them to the basement and getting new furniture. Hmmm .. maybe I should just browse around for new furniture. Hey, I like that idea!

Trying to concentrate

September 18, 2012 by Tricia

I’m having yet another busy week. I guess that’s the way it’s going to be now that I’m back in school. I’m busy trying to return to work, going to school and maintaining all my sites at the same time .. oh and we’re renovating our house too! Yes that’s a lot isn’t it?

I’d be back at work already if my hand injury hadn’t happened – then I’d be even busier!

I’m having trouble concentrating studying when my husband is home. He’s always busy doing odd jobs around the house or picking up one of his guitars and playing music. I usually don’t mind, but now that I’m studying it’s a little distracting.

Oh and speaking of guitars, the other day he saw one called a jazzmaster musicians friend and that’s now his latest obsession. He loves jazz music, in fact when he first started playing guitar he played classical and jazz so he wouldn’t mind one of these guitars. Perhaps if he gets one of these guitars I can make a deal with him to only play it in the basement or upstairs when I’m studying? Yeah … that’ll work.

Ok … back to my studying!
