One more week of my husbands vacation – will I survive?

July 30, 2010 by Tricia

It’s been a busy week! I think I’m glad the weekend’s here, even though I’m going to be on my own for the next few days.

My husband has been off work for the last two weeks. The first week was a 1 week layoff from work due to budget cuts and this week was the first week of his two week holidays. Yes … he’s off for a total of three weeks!

Since we didn’t make any definite holiday plans (except for this weekend which just got messed up!) we’ve just been hanging out at home.

It’s been nice to have my husband at home, but it’s also thrown me totally off my work schedule. Every time I start to do some work on the computer – usually on one of our many blogs, he comes in and starts asking me questions about something else or suggests that we go out and do something. So my websites have suffered while he’s been off.

We’ve also had a few drop in visitors this week. One was Chris’ nephew and another was a friend from work that hasn’t visited for a long time. I didn’t mind having visitors over, but since I’m still not feeling so great and I’m way behind in my work it did disrupt things to some degree.

I was looking forward to going away this weekend. My husbands friend is having a big 30th wedding anniversary party and I was supposed to go, but since we can’t bring our dog someones got to stay home and take care of her. All I wanted was to go up north and hang out in a cabin (and later at my sister in laws trailer), just lounge in some of the rustic furniture and relax.

Now that I know I’m going to be home on my own for three or four days I’m scrambling to make some plans of my own. I’m going to see if some of my friends want to get together for a spa day or a girls night out (or both). If I can pull it off I think that will make up for not going up north this weekend.

It’s probably better that I stick around home anyway. I’m still not feeling all that well. I’ve been dizzy several times this week and I’ve had a constant migraine that gets worse, than dies down, then gets worse again – but never seems to go away. There’s no news yet on the head MRI that I had last week – hopefully that means that no news is good news.

So what are your plans for the weekend? It’s a long weekend here in Canada so that means we have three days to enjoy some time off.

Met the new neighbors

June 5, 2010 by Tricia

Our brand new neighbors came to visit their new house earlier today. I still have no idea when they’re planning to move in, but they were here for several hours today cleaning up the house.

They pulled out at least two rugs and what looks like some flimsy wall partitions and placed them in the backyard. There’s also a few garbage bags with what looks like broken 2 x 2’s and cheap furniture. Most of that is probably stuff the last bad renters left in the house … probably in the basement because their 14 year old daughter was living down there with her boyfriend (yep).

I guess my husband went outside to meet them sometime in the morning while I was still in bed trying to sleep. He took them in our backyard and feed them some of our fresh strawberries (picked fresh off the plants). I complained a bit about that when he told me because I haven’t even had a strawberry yet. LOL He gives them away to people whenever they visit our yard and I almost never had more than one or two of our own home grown strawberries each year.

Later when I was up we went and knocked on their door to officially welcome them to the neighborhood. My husband had gone out to a local bakery and bought $20 worth of pastries and desserts for them. We also put a few cold soft drinks in a bag in case they were thirsty working in their new hot house.

So I only met the man. I think his wife was out when we arrived at their door. He was dressed in one of those head to toe coveralls that you can buy for painting and he looked hot. He seemed nice enough. My husband who had met and talked with both of them before they were really into their clean up and were still relatively fresh found them to be quite nice.

My husband was actually quite nervous that we’d end up with bad neighbors seeing as the last two renters were so terrible. However we figured someone with the money to buy a house in this neighborhood (no house are cheap in Toronto) would probably be ok.

I don’t envy them all the work they’re going to have to do to fix up the house. When we first bought our house we started doing major renovations. I remember working about 18 hours a day continuously for weeks to get everything down .. talk about a natural fat burner ! I didn’t need to lose any weight at the time we first got our house but with all that work on our renovations I somehow managed to lose about 40 lb in a month .. oh and my Crohn’s was acting up at the time too so that didn’t help. I was skeletal by the time we were ready to move in. LOL

We still don’t know if our new neighbors are going to do a lot of renovations. I think they just want to clean up their new home, maybe paint and then move in. Apparently they gave up their apartment about two months ago and have been living with his parents while they waited to get possession of their new house. I know if I was living with my in-laws I’d want to move fast. LOL

Hopefully the new neighbors turn out to be good people. At least we made an effort to be friendly and welcome them to the neighborhood. Everyone is fairly friendly here on our street and in the general area, it takes some getting used to if you come from an area where you really don’t know your neighbors – like an apartment building, but hopefully they’ll turn out to be nice too.

My poor tired husband

June 1, 2010 by Tricia

My husband just got home from work a little while ago and he’s exhausted! He’s been taking a few extra shifts from his co-workers over the last few weeks so he’s been working more hours.

I also kept him busy in the garden over the weekend. He was outside with me when he came home from work on Friday and then we put in several hours on Saturday and Sunday in the garden as well.

He’s more tired than usual this evening. I think it’s because they put in a new document management at work and he had to learn how to use it – even though he doesn’t produce many documents as a hospital attendant/ orderly.

If my back wasn’t aching so much I’d cook him up a nice meal … but I think we’re just going to relax and put a frozen pizza in the oven. Hey it’s easy and we don’t eat “fast” food too often.

Another beautiful day

April 15, 2010 by Tricia

It’s another beautiful day here in Toronto. After a week of normal weather we’re having a really nice day! Currently it’s 19 C (66 F) and it’s supposed to get warmer still.

My garden is appreciating all this great weather. As I’ve said a few times recently, my garden is way ahead of itself. If I didn’t know the date, I’d swear it was already May when I look at my garden. I have tulips coming up and developing flower buds, Glory of the snow flowers blooming, crocuses, muscari, snow drops and many other plants coming out. It’s amazing.

I think I might just bring my laptop outside so I can get some work done and enjoy this beautiful day in my garden.

Sorry that I haven’t been writing too much lately. I seem to have picked up yet another bug. On Sunday I woke up with a really sore throat and my abdomen was hurting like crazy. I’m better now than I was on Sunday but I’m still feeling off. My husband is sick too. He came home from work early on Tuesday, stayed home yesterday and then tried to go to work today but ended up coming home a couple of hours early. Darn viruses!

Hopefully you are enjoying some nice weather too and NOT fighting some kind of bug like my husband and I are!

A great day for gardening and barbecuing

April 2, 2010 by Tricia

It was such a nice day today! My husband had today off since it’s Good Friday so we took advantage of the great weather (24 C! 75 F unheard of temps here in Toronto for early April) and spent several hours outside tidying up the garden.

We spent a lot of time working on the garden beds in the front of the house. Of course this is always slow going because we know a LOT of our neighbors so we were stopping to talk to them briefly every so often.

While we were outside we saw our old awful renter neighbors drive by a few times. They seem to be hanging out at a house down a side street that’s opposite our house so we can see them quite easily. Since our old neighbors and the people they are hanging out with are basically criminals my husband and I thinking of putting in some kind of security system … maybe one of those wireless security systems of course we’ll have to price it out, but with people like that hanging around we’ll feel better knowing we have a security system.

After we were finished tidying up the front garden beds and moving a few plants around (ever try digging up a rose that’s been in place for 10 years? AH!) we did a bit of work in the backyard and then my husband fired up the BBQ.

We just finished eating some fantastic tasting hamburgers. I was starving so it’s great to have that tasty food in me!

Did you take advantage of the holiday today and perhaps get some yard work done as well? Or maybe you got together with family?
