How did you bring in the new year?

January 3, 2011 by Tricia

Happy New Year to all of my readers and visitors!

I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season and that the new year brings you health, happiness and that at least one of your wishes for yourself come true.

I had a fairly uneventful New Year’s eve and new years day … pretty much how I like it. I used to do the party thing … ie go down town to the clubs or go to someones New Year’s Party or even hold my own … but it’s such a hassle after a while. I know, that probably sounds like I’m a party pooper, but my husband and I just like having a nice dinner together and doing our own thing.

Hopefully none of you partied so much that you’re now looking in to inpatient rehab centers wink wink. LOL With any luck the hangovers are long gone and life is back to normal for most of you?

So tell me .. what did you do to celebrate the New Year and did you make any resolutions?

I didn’t make any resolutions. Hey, I already quit smoking in October! That’s a big one! The 12th of this month will be 3 months for me. Also, thanks to the medication that I’m taking for my migraines I can’t even have a drink (another reason we didn’t go out to any parties for New Years) so I haven’t even had a drink for close to five months. Not that I ever drank much before that, but that’s two big things I quit doing all before the new year.

So what resolutions did you make and did you break them yet?

Frustrating phone calls

January 3, 2011 by Tricia

I was talking to my father in law earlier today. He was calling because he wanted to talk with my husband about a hockey tournament that my nephew will be playing in.

You know when the hockey tournament is? Next year!!! Of course he didn’t tell me that when he called this afternoon … no .. he told me that he’d call back when Chris got home from work. Of course this is the day that my husband works until 8 so by the time my father in law called we were having a late dinner. So he called an interrupted our dinner to talk about an event that’s not happening until next year.

I know part of it is that my father in law probably just wants to talk to his son. That’s fine … but if he didn’t call almost every day just as we’re sitting down to eat I probably wouldn’t get quite so ticked off about it.

Also .. he’s going to start planning something that’s a year away … and of course the dates will change or something will change about it and this will result in even more back and forth phone calls between my husband, his father, his brother and nephew .. Everything my in-laws plan turns out this way .. well anything that they start planning ahead of time. I think they should just wait until a week before an event to plan how things should go it would save a lot of stress and phone bills.

There was one good thing about talking with my father in law earlier today … he reminded me that I have to look for a cell booster for my mother in laws cell phone. She has poor reception when she tries to use her cell phone in her office, maybe it will work better with a booster. I told her I’d look into one for her.

Merry Christmas!

December 24, 2010 by Tricia

Are you ready for Christmas? I think I’m about as ready as I’m going to be!

I cooked our turkey yesterday. My husband and I always have a turkey dinner at home – even if it’s just the two of us and even if it’s not eaten on Christmas day. We enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner and don’t mind eating leftovers – for a week or more at a time. LOL I guess you could say our Turkey dinner yesterday was in honour of Festivus since it fell on Christmas eve eve.

The turkey that I cooked was 13 pounds! I’m pretty sure that I’m going to end up freezing half of it. that’s ok of course as we don’t mind eating Turkey later on in January. I can pull some out for a quick stir fry. Yum.

My husband and I were out doing a little last minute shopping this afternoon before the stores close. We only had to get some grocery supplies, but somehow my husband managed to stop at a display of spyderco delica knifes. I didn’t realize that he likes them.

Tomorrow we’re going to the in-laws for Christmas dinner. I think my mother in law is cooking a turkey, but I won’t know until we get there – sometimes she doesn’t. I made a second pumpkin Cheesecake (yes I did make my first ever one on Sunday!) to bring to their house for dessert. I’m hoping it goes over well. I’m also bringing some of the cookies that I made over the last two weeks – four types!

Whatever you are doing for the holidays I do hope that you enjoy yourself and that you are with family or friends. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

My husband really needs a new job

November 30, 2010 by Tricia

I can’t believe that tomorrow is the start of December! The months have just been flying by this year.

Unfortunately I’m dreading the end of the year and the beginning of the new year. Money is going to be really tight for us around that time. My husband is going to be going through yet another temporary lay off at work. A two week lay off at the end of December.

So that means we really can’t spend any extra money in December at all and more than likely it would be best to spend less than normal. Yeah … nice time of year to try to do that huh? Something tells me that come the end of December those TV commercials for payday advance loans will be looking pretty good. LOL

January will be the hardest month for us. Chris will get his normal pay cheques in December, but his his first pay cheque in the first week of January will be for zero dollars because he won’t have worked for the previous two weeks thanks to the lay off. That means that his first real pay in January won’t be until something like the 20th … so considering I’m still stuck at home on unpaid medical leave January is going to be a very tight month. I’m not looking forward to it.

I guess other than for bills and groceries there will be no extra money spent this month. So much for Christmas! I think my husband had better start looking for a new job and fast!

I can’t believe it’s almost December!

November 18, 2010 by Tricia

I can’t believe how fast the year has gone by. Christmas is what, less than 6 weeks away?

As usual, we haven’t started doing any of our Christmas shopping. In fact, I don’t think we’ll be doing much Christmas shopping this year. Chris came home from work last Friday with news that he’s going to be laid off for another two weeks at the end of December so we won’t be spending much money this year!

We do have a couple of friends and relatives with young kids and babies. I think we’ll concentrate on getting baby christmas presents and then see how we stand financially as to whether we can afford to get gifts for anyone else. Hey if we can’t we can’t … I know our friends and relatives will understand. We certainly don’t expect any gifts and won’t be upset if we don’t get anything.

All we really want for the holidays is for our friends and relatives (and ourselves) to be happy and healthy.
