My best friend is …

April 8, 2007 by Tricia

Julie, over at Just Julie wrote a great post about a woman that she met after talking to her online.

The two quickly became the best of friends and Julie wrote about her in a post called Who’s your Best Friend. Her post got me thinking – Who’s my best friend?

Well, I’d have to say without a doubt that it’s the man that is sitting near me eating his breakfast, with his stinky feet on the table.

Chris and Sofie guitar lesson He’s a great guy. Other than his love for me, his next greatest passion is playing guitar. This is a photo of him fooling around with my elderly stalker … I mean neighbor Sofie. We gave a copy of that photo to her kids. They love it.

Chris and I met back when we both worked in the jewelery trade. I had my own business cutting designs on jewelry with my diamond cutting machine, making molds and gold plating jewelry and other objects. Chris worked as a jeweler for another trades person.

He noticed me first. I shared office space with my sister who was and still is an engraver, and he’d occasionally come into our office to get jewelry engraved for his companies clients. He never spoke to me when he’d visit the office, and I was busy doing my own work at the back so I can’t say that I ever really noticed him at that time. Hey, it was a busy office!

It turned out that we hung out with some of the same people in the Jewelery trade. In fact, he was taking a gem setting course at the college that was being taught by our mutual friend Paul. Paul was a partier back then, and I guess Chris and I both were too.

I had gone with Paul one evening while he taught his class and then we were going to go a party at a friends later. It turned out that Chris was also going to the party so we all went together and somehow I ended up spending the whole time at the party talking to Chris and even singing with him as he played the piano that was in the house.

Chris and I have been together ever since! He’s been with me literally through thick and thin. We’ve both gone back to school while we’ve been together, as well as started new careers. We have financial troubles and health troubles and still here we are.

He’s been very supportive of me every time I’ve gotten ill and particularly through this, perhaps the worst crohn’s flare that I’ve been through.

I know that there are many husbands and wives out that there that wouldn’t say their spouse is their best friend. Some might even think that it’s wrong to feel that way. However, Chris and I can spend days together and not get sick of each other ever. We always have a good time – whether we are simple watching TV, or working on one of our home renovation projects together. Yes, we argue every now and then but not all that much compared to some folks.

He knows my thoughts, my likes and dislikes, how to make me happy when I’m down. So that’s why Chris, my husband is also my best friend.

Who’s yours?

I need a holiday!

April 3, 2007 by Tricia

My husband and I never seem to take holidays. Well, yes we do travel to various places but it always seems to be a family related event. Remember last summer we went to Chicago? Well we stayed with Chris’ brother when we visited. We also went to Ottawa that summer and stayed at my brothers. We want to go to Vancouver sometime in the next year and oh guess what? We’ll probably stay with another brother of mine when we go there.

Believe me it’s nice to be able to stay in someone’s home when you go on a little vacation. It certainly saves money, and often we end up staying with people that we don’t see very often so it’s a good chance to get together and visit.

We never seem to get away for a real vacation. What is a real vacation anyway? I’d love to go to one of the Caribbean island resorts, or perhaps to South America – maybe Costa Rica, or perhaps a lovely European vacation?

You know what I’ve been thinking about doing? Signing up for a membership with a club that has resorts all over the world. We wouldn’t have any excuse not to plan holidays to different parts of the world each year if we had a membership with one of the holiday clubs like leisuretime holidays. All we’d have to do would be decide where exactly we’d want to go and book it through the club. Then we’d end up staying in a luxurious resort for a week or two each year.

I could certainly go for that. In fact, that might be the only way we start taking regular holidays!

How about you? Do you take regular holidays each year? Do you go the same types of places over and over again, or do you try to go somewhere different for each holiday?

Sometimes I wonder about my husband

January 23, 2007 by Tricia

Yesterday, while I was still sleeping Chris was up and about. He decided to get some errands done.

I don’t know which order he did these in, but it doesn’t matter, I wasn’t all that thrilled when I found out about them.

One of his errands was to go to our hair dresser to get his haircut. He didn’t need a haircut, and without me there to tell her not to do it she gave him a BEAN SHAVE. Ok it’s not that bad, but it’s short, short, short. I’m not enthused. Plus, we usually go together. Yeah we’re one of those couples that do most everything together.

So now, when I need to get my hair cut he won’t need a cut.

He put us out of sync!

Chris also went and got his nails done. Yes you heard me right. I said he got his nails done.

The nail thing began last April.

You see he’s a guitar player and he’s quite serious about his music. Many of the top guitar players either coat their nails to make them stronger or wear fake nails and use them when they are picking. They holding up better than real unaltered nails in most cases.

My husband actually envies my nails. They grow fast and they are rock hard. I have to be careful that I don’t accidentally tap someone with my nail or hit them as I’m walking by as it really hurts.

So … last April he finally decide to get fake nails, but only on his right hand. You can read about my reaction to his fake nails if you’d like.

I think he’s had his nails done at least four times now. I’m slowly getting used to it but I still think it looks weird. I also don’t really like it when he touches me with those nails. It just feels weird. Do guys feel that way when they are touched by a womans fake nails?

Chris is funny. Over the past year he’s been very fixated on his nails and has been trying to get them in better shape. He’s got a few little bottles of nail conditioners and clear nail polish too! Plus he’s always filing the nails to shape them (files them wrong in my opinion, maybe that’s why they feel so darn weird), or filing callus’ off his hands.

I don’t mind nice smooth hands but the nails stuff is making me crazy.

I guess I just have to face the fact that I married an odd guy. At least he keeps me amused.

No more house guests

January 5, 2007 by Tricia

My home was invaded on Monday, New Years day, by my husband’s brother and his son. They’d come up from Chicago for a family visit last Friday and they decided to stay at our house for a few days while they were in Canada.

They weren’t supposed to come over until Tuesday, and I was not feeling well on Monday when they arrived. No I didn’t party on New Years – I stayed home by myself because I wasn’t well. Anyway, we had a nice time Monday evening and made plans to go to a hockey game on Tuesday evening.

Tuesday night I was so ill that I was actually falling asleep during a hockey game. I don’t think I’ve ever fallen asleep in public let alone at a hockey game! This one had brawls every few minutes too. I have no idea why I was so sleepy but I was, and I found myself nodding off several times. Very strange.

The evening was ruined at the end. My husbands brothers 18 year old daughter was flying in from Chicago that evening. Chris went to pick her up after the hockey game. They called her on the cell phone just as she arrived to find out what terminal she was in. Toronto has three terminals so it’s important to know which one your landing in or picking someone up from. Anyway, she had no clue, so Chris asked her to ask someone and call him back when she was getting her bags.

Well, she never did ask anyone. I had to figure out which terminal she was at by looking up the airlines on the net here at home. So it was a mess of phone calls back and forth and this girl doesn’t like to wait. of course when I looked at her paperwork when she got her it did say what terminal she was landing in. She was just being too dumb or stubborn to look at it.

Now if only that was all that went wrong. It wasn’t. The airline lost her bags! So when Chris and his nephew arrived back at the house – about two hours later than they should have she was in a horrible mood. So bad in fact that she didn’t even say hello to me. That really ticked me off because I was the only person she hadn’t seen in months and she couldn’t even say hello?

It’s not that she doesn’t like me or anything. She was just in a mood. She’s a real princess that one. If she doesn’t get what she wants she whines!

The rest of their visit was ok. We went out to dinner on Wednesday night, and the guys watched some of the World Junior hockey games that we’d recorded on the DVR earlier that day. Speaking of which the Gold match is on today!

Yesterday I had yet another doctors appointment in the morning. Chris went with me and when we came back the gang was just getting up. We’d found out the night before that the airport had found my nieces bags, and they were delivered to the house around noon on Thursday. My niece was finally happy. They left a while after the bags arrived and I went back to bed for a couple of hours because I’d only slept two hours the night before.

I’m just so dragged out. I’m in pain, not feeling well, and I’m totally exhausted but I can’t sleep because of the pain. This was not the time for me to have three extra people in my house.

I have a feeling we’ll be going out of town tonight. Chris’ brother is going to drive back to Chicago on Saturday, so he’s spending Friday night at their parents house, and I think we might go there for a final visit before they go. All I can say though is that if I’m still feeling like crap I’m not going.

Turn your spouses into bloggers

December 19, 2006 by Tricia

I was exchanging emails back and forth yesterday with a Canadian blogger that I’ve recently met – well met over the Internet I mean – and when I told her how many blogs I’m working on she was surprised and replied, something to the effect that “My husband calls himself a blog widower…” because she spends so much time on her blog and visiting blogs that she enjoys.

I think my husband Chris felt that way for a long time too. I was always working on my blogs, visiting other peoples sites (which I haven’t had much time for lately, sorry!), and surfing for credits to keep my sites running through the traffic engines. I think he wanted to help out a bit but he had no idea what to do.

I slowly started to convert him over to blogging.

First I got him surfing for me while I used our other computer to write out my posts. Then, when he offered to help again, I asked him to start looking for funny strange stories for Odd Planet. He did a good job so I started showing him how to blog the stories, find good photos to go along with them and to post. Now he’s taken over Odd Planet.

He’s a musician too. An amazing guitar player. So I suggested that he start a music related blog. One where he could possibly teach others how to play guitar through video clips and the use of guitar tabs and whatever else he could think of. Well, he’s started blogging on the new site a while back and we’re just about ready to show it off to the world. He’s enjoying writing on his new site too.

So for any of you who have spouses that are starting to feel like blogging widows or widowers – tell them that if they can’t beat ’em, join ’em. That’s what Chris did and he loves it.
