Man that was a great dinner

June 29, 2008 by Tricia

I’m pleasantly full right now. Chris and I just had a delicious dinner. Yum.

Earlier this evening we went out grocery shopping. The stores will be closed tomorrow by the time he gets home from work since the next day is Canada Day so we had to get everything we’d need for the holiday today.

I’m so glad we went shopping. Our grocery store had grilling sirloin steak on sale so I picked up some for our dinner tonight and two for our dinner on Tuesday. They also had fresh corn on the cob. Now I can’t eat corn on the cob very often thanks to my Crohn’s – I eat it maybe once or twice a year and I often pay for it dearly, but I love it and there’s nothing better than fresh corn on the cob, especially when it’s a rare treat.

I also picked up ingredients for salad – organic mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumber and some light feta cheese. Plus they had berries on sale so I picked up fresh organic raspberries, locally grown strawberries and some blueberries.

As we left the grocery store we stopped in the wine shop and got their wine of the month – a lovely Australian Shiraz. Oddly enough that’s the only thing that I’ve mentioned that we didn’t have this evening.

Once we got home I quickly marinated the steaks with Montreal Steak sauce and prepared the corn, salad and fruit for our “strawberry” shortcake.

Chris grilled the steaks on the BBQ to perfection and as I said the meal was delicious. Steak, corn on the cob, a nice salad and a light dessert of fruit over a small piece of angel food cake. Yum.

Finally finished the front yard

June 26, 2008 by Tricia

Chris and I were busy this evening.

It was a hot day and I’d wanted to finished planting some annuals that I bought a couple of weeks ago, but being such a hot day I didn’t garden during the day. Instead, I waited until it had cooled a bit and then went out.

It was still too hot when we went outside, but we pushed on.

We were outside from about 6:30 until 10 pm! Yeah when I garden I work until I’m finished. So now all the annuals are planted among the roses that are blooming their happy little heads off. We put mulch down too – red cedar – so the garden looks nice and tidy.

It was dark by the time I was done watering and as we put the last of the mulch on the beds so I can’t wait until tomorrow to take a look at our work.

Have to work up the energy to go shopping

June 19, 2008 by Tricia

If I can ever get moving today I’ve got to go out to the drug store. I saw my pain doctor yesterday and she gave me my regular prescription of pain meds. Time to find out what it really costs without a health care benefits package! Argh … I’m sure it will be at least $200 if not more.

At least if it starts to get too expensive for me I have a couple months worth of most of my meds stocked up. I don’t take as many pills as I’m prescribed each day so I built up a supply. Gosh if I did take what I was fully prescribed I’d probably be a zombie!

If I’m not up to going out to the store I’ll just send Chris. He’s pretty good about doing things like that for me. He even does most of the grocery shopping these days. I wonder if I can get him to buy wrinkle cream for me? Ok well .. anti-wrinkle cream is what it should be called. Gotta use it to prevent aging right? Thankfully I’m from a family that ages well. Even my parents when they were in their early 80’s only looked like they were in their 60’s or early 70’s and my brothers and sister all look at least 10 years younger than they really are.

Do you come from a family that looks young for their age or are you going to have to fight aging tooth and nail the whole way?

The strangest thing happened last night

June 11, 2008 by Tricia

We had a knock at the door at about 2:30 this morning …

I had fallen asleep on the couch at about 11 pm, and Chris had gone to bed sometime after that. At about 2 a.m. I woke up – too hot because we didn’t have the air conditioning on and Chris had shut all the windows.

As it turned out Chris was awake too and he came downstairs to get some water and watch TV for a few minutes before trying to sleep again.

That’s when we heard a faint knock on the door. Or at least we thought it was a knock, but I also wondered if It was our new neighbors making noise in the house next door even though they haven’t moved in yet.

Chris got up and looked out the peephole and saw a skinny little man standing outside the door. He was saying something, but no matter how many times Chris said “what?” or asked him to repeat what he’d said we still couldn’t tell what he was saying.

Finally Chris decided to open the door. Apparently this guy is the brother of one of our neighbors. His sister was apparently on Vacation and he’d been downtown delivering wine to a bar in the Docks area when his van ran out of gas. He didn’t have any money and needed some to fill the tank.

Somehow he was on a bike. Where he got it I don’t know.

Chris pulled out his wallet and gave him 20 bucks. We had more money in my wallet but he didn’t have to know that.

I still wasn’t sure if his story rang true as I’d never seen him before nor heard our neighbor taking about a brother or anything.

He left saying he’d return in the morning with some wine for us (and hopefully the 20 dollars we’d lent him, although he didn’t promise that).

As of this moment – almost 5 pm, he still hasn’t returned and I have seen our neighbor that’s supposedly his sister … so I don’t think she was on vacation.

It was just so weird. Especially since I just wrote about how we don’t let strangers into our house. Well I guess we didn’t let the guy in, but we gave him money …

I’ll send Chris over to the neighbors later this evening when he gets home from work to check out the story.

We might go to a Rush concert in July

May 6, 2008 by Tricia

When Chris’ brother was over on Sunday night he was trying to talk us into meeting him in Milwaukee in early July to go to a Rush concert. Both he and Chris are big fans of the band.

I don’t even know if Chris could get the time off in order to go to the concert. It’s in the middle of the week, July 7th I think and one of his co-workers is on holidays for the whole month of July so he’s supposed to be doing extra shifts.

If we find that we’re able to go I’ll have to look up some cheap hotels in the area for all of us to stay in. I’m sure Chris and his brother would be happy sleeping in the car for all they’d care, but if I’m traveling all that way I’m sleeping in a bed that night.

Any Rush fans out there?

Did I ever tell you that Chris used to deliver grocery products to the high end neighborhoods here in Toronto? This was like 20 years ago. He met Geddy Lee and his wife Nancy several times. Actually Geddy Lee didn’t live too far from our apartment and we’d occasionally see him and his little dog (a Maltese maybe) in the liquor store.
