Trying to find a way to cut our expenses

Things have been getting worse and worse for my husband and I financially. I’m not earning much money these days from my websites (enough to pay some of the bills, but not ALL of them like I used to!) and we just found out that over the next few months my husbands hours at work are probably going to be cut down a bit. As if we can stand any more loss of income!

I’m going to go over all of our expenses and see where we can start making cuts. We can certainly cut down our cable bill as we have a special premium channel and HD package … but I don’t want to stop those if I can help it as it’s my only form of entertainment when I’m lying on the couch in pain from my Crohn’s. Things would be so much better for us if I weren’t sick and could go back to work!

We’ve also thought of switching over from regular Bell phone service to Rogers Home phone service as it sounds like we could save about $30 off our phone bill and have something like 500 hours of free North American long distance calls included in the price.

We’re careful with our electrical usage. We try not to have too many lights on at night, and since Toronto Hydro started their smart billing we try not to run appliances like the dryer during prime time hours (instead using them after 10:30 at night or on the weekends when it’s cheaper) … of course our washer broke in early August so I guess we’re saving electricity and water since we’re not using it. LOL We also use those compact florescent lights in all of the light fixtures in the house that can use them. We’ve been doing that for years now. I don’t know where else we can cut our electrical usage to bring the bill down.

We heat our house with oil and we’re on a payment plan. The only way we can bring that bill down more is to keep the house cooler in the winter than we already do. I don’t think we can cut it much as we already keep the house pretty cool … 68 F or less, and it’s an old house so it cools down fast!

Other than that we don’t have too many other regular bills … hmmm maybe we should check into auto insurance quotes to see if we can bring down our house and auto insurance bills. I think we’re already paying a fairly low price compared to other insurance companies, but maybe we can do better. I mean, Chris and I have both been driving since we were teenagers and neither of us have ever had a speeding ticket or a car accident – that’s gotta count for something with an insurance company right?

Lets see I’ve gone over the cable (internet, and cell phone included), telephone, heating and insurance bills … like I said that pretty much covers our utility and home related bills. The only other major expenses we have are our mortgage (we pay biweekly which helps cut the interest down) and grocery bills.

Speaking of groceries we’ve noticed that the price of food has really gone up over the last year. That sucks! We’ve switched grocery stores to one that has much lower prices than the two main grocery stores that we used to always use. I think we save about $30 off our regular grocery bill just from the grocery store switch.

Other things that we do to cut down our grocery bill is to try to buy things when they are on sale … and not just buying one or two items- we’ll buy several items when somethings on sale. We also buy things in bulk at stores like Costco or at the butchers (remember those bags of chicken breasts we buy – they last about three months and probably cost us half the price of grocery store chicken breasts!). We also try to buy cheaper brands (provided that they have similar ingredients to the brand names we like and don’t have more fat or sodium etc).

A news story this week talked about how Store Brands have become much better and how they can cut your grocery bill in half. They did taste tests comparing store brands with several name brand items ranging from pizza to salsa sauce and the testers usually picked the store brand … so that’s another way we can save some money – if we buy more store brand products.

Most of our food is home made (barring loaves of bread etc). By this I mean I make our dinners and other meals from scratch. We don’t buy many pre-made foods with the exception of the occasional frozen pizza. It takes a little more time to make home made meals, but they are usually quite a bit cheaper than store bought pre-made meals and healthier too! Also at this time of year we have some produce from the garden (tomatoes, beans, lettuce etc) so that cuts our grocery bill a bit too.

Over all I think we’re pretty good with our money and how we spend it. We’ve tried to lessen all of our bills as much as we can and the only places where we can cut more is the Cable bills and maybe by switching to our Cable companies Home Phone service. That might save us $100 a month … and we might be able to tighten up our grocery spending a bit more, maybe by $50 or so a month … but overall that’s only an extra $150 saved and we need to cut a lot more if my husband is going to lose hours at work.

I guess the main thing I need to do is to try to make more money from my sites. How I’ll do that I don’t know, but we’ve cut pretty much as much as we can so I guess we need to earn more.

The only other thing we can try is to maybe take in a border again – remember how we used to take in students from other countries who were coming here to learn English? Now that was an experience! LOL

Hopefully some of the things that we’ve done to cut our bills will help you find some ways to save on your expenses if you’re in a similar situation. If any of you have a suggestion as to how we can cut our expenses even more, by all means, speak up!

My back is bad again

Darn it! My back is bad again! It was pretty good for most of the summer, but I guess I haven’t been quite as active in the last few weeks so it’s started hurting me again!

Yesterday I went outside to do a little gardening and to water the front and back gardens and pretty much as soon as I stepped outside, before I even did any work, my back started hurting. Same thing this afternoon – my husband and I went outside to sit on the patio and I took some pictures and as soon as I started working with my camera – bending in odd ways, my back started screaming!

Earlier this year I found out that I have a slipped disc in my lower back and it’s pinching a nerve. Pretty much anytime I lean forward (especially for an extended period of time) my back starts to ache because that position pinches the nerve even more than when I’m standing straight or leaning back. My left leg, to just below my knee, has been numb since January … it will probably be more numb than usual this evening.

I’m actually still outside on the patio, typing away from the garden, but once I go inside I think I’ll have to lie down and put some heat on my back.

Do any of you have bad backs as well? What do you do to make your back feel better?

Grilled Halibut

Last Saturday evening we had Grilled Halibut for dinner. It’s very easy to make, and it’s a healthy meal!

Here’s how I prepared the halibut for grilling:

Grilled Halibut Dinner for Two

  • 2 pieces of Halibut (approx 1 inch thick, 1/2 lb per piece)

Marinade:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp lemon juice (concentrated)
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp dried dill or 1 tsp chopped fresh dill

Mix marinade ingredients together in a mixing bowl or flat dish (corning ware?) that is large enough to hold the fish.

Rinse Halibut pieces and pat dry. Place the Halibut in the marinade container, turning once or twice to make sure the fish is covered in marinade. Let sit for approximately 30 minutes prior to cooking.

When cooking fish in the oven or on the grill it’s good to keep in mind that it takes approximately 10 minutes to thoroughly cook a 1 inch piece of fish.

Prepare the grill by oiling it and once it’s reached a high temperature place your fish on the grill. Halibut usually has skin on one side so place the skin side down when you first begin to cook the fish. Turn after approximately five minutes and cook the other side for another five minutes (10 minutes in total per inch thickness of fish) or until the fish is opaque and begins to flake easily. (test with knife or fork while cooking.)

Serve the fish immediately after cooking. Asparagus and grilled vegetables are wonderful additions to this meal.

Steamed Asparagus

When preparing Asparagus I rinse the asparagus, then snap off the hard ends on the stalks. I then place the Asparagus spears in a microwave steaming dish and cook them for approximately three minutes.

Once the Asparagus spears are tender I drain any water from the microwave steamer, place the asparagus in the bottom tray with a little bit of margarine (we use canola margarine) and a few drops of lemon juice concentrate. I then toss the asparagus in the margarine and lemon juice and serve. The lemon really adds to the flavor of the asparagus. Delicious.

Grilled Vegetables

Grilled vegetables are easy to prepare and cook on the grill. You can grill just about any vegetable on the grill (onion, eggplant, zucchini, peppers, garlic, tomato etc) – just make sure that you cut your veggies large enough so that they don’t fall through the grill and or use a veggie grilling basket on your barbecue.

The other day I purchased a basket of zucchini and a basket of green peppers – what better than to grill them!

Simple marinade for grilled veggies:

  • two tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder or 1/2 tsp finely diced fresh garlic
  • sprinkle of ground pepper
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning mix

Mix marinade ingredients together in a bowl.

Prepare vegetables for grilling

  • 1 Zucchini
  • 1 pepper
  1. Cut Zucchini in half lengthwise and then quarter each half creating 8 zucchini wedges
  2. Clean and Quarter the pepper removing all seeds
  3. (prepare any other vegetables you might like to try grilling)
  4. Toss the vegetable pieces in the marinade and let sit for approximately 30 minutes before grilling.
  5. grill veggies on medium to low heat, turning often to prevent charring. Serve immediately once done.

If you enjoy grilled vegetables you should look at this grilled veggie recipe!  The recipe above is very simple, but if you want really tasty grilled vegetables or your cooking to impress this grilled vegetable recipe is the one that I’d use! Yummy!

This meal if very quick and easy to prepare and oh, it tastes so good! Give it a try and let me know how you liked it!

I think the top of my head is going to blow off – yeah it’s a migraine

I don’t know if it’s the weather or what, but the last few days I’ve been pretty much put out of commission by headaches and migraines! Friday and today were both total write offs. I’m only just beginning to feel slightly human right now … after a day of throbbing head pain.

My husband was out all day and that didn’t help. Have you ever tried to take care of a dog (ie go out for pee breaks?) when you can barely stand up because when you do it feels like the top of your head is going to blow off?

My husband didn’t help when he got home either. He got back at about 9:30 pm and he had his cousin and his cousins two sons with him (they’d been helping another cousin fix a drainage problem in her backyard all day) and even though he knew I felt like death warmed over he brought the kids in to say hi. GRRR So of course I had to stand up for hugs and then see them out the door to their car again. Not fun!

If my husband does anything else like that tonight he’d better hope that Blue Advantage gives him good coverage ’cause I felt like punching him earlier! LOL

I hope that this migraine goes away soon and stays away. It’s gotten cold here in Toronto and it was overcast all weekend. Like I said earlier maybe the weather has something to do with the headaches?

Worried about a sick relative

When we visited and helped care for my husbands uncle over the weekend (his family, all but his daughter, had gone to a wedding out of town) we were both surprised how bad he looked.

He’s lost weight. I wouldn’t be surprised it this once robust 6′ 2″ man weighed less than 110 lb! He’s also really frail and weak, sleeping most of the day. Oh and he doesn’t eat. The most his family can get into him is Boost or Ensure – only liquid foods.

If he keeps going downhill I think his family is going to have to consider either hospitalizing him or putting him in a nursing home … or at the very least trying to find out if OHIP (our Government Ontario Health insurance plan) would cover some in home nursing care. I guess the American equivalent of that kind of care might come in the form of a Medicare supplement plan. Maybe, I don’t know … but it’s a service that should be free here in Ontario to those who need it and believe me, my husbands uncle needs more care than he’s getting.

I guess we’ll talk to Chris’ uncles family to see if they’ve asked for extra help – nursing or home care wise I mean. Somehow I doubt it.

It’s hard to see someone you care about change so much. Chris’ mother and his aunt were here over the weekend too (see my last post – I’m not a fan of the in-laws visiting!) and they don’t think he’s going to be around all that long.

When Chris gets home from work this evening we might pop over to his uncles for a visit. It will give his family a break and give us some time to visit with his uncle if he’s up to visitors – that is.
