Why I prefer contact lenses to glasses

December 12, 2006 by Tricia

If you’ve ever watched any of the videos that I’ve made and posted on this site you’ll notice that I sometimes wear glasses and other times, while it might appear that my eyes are au natual, I do indeed have contacts in. In fact I prefer to wear contacts as much as possible, especially if I’m going outside on a bright sunny day because using prescription contacts help me shield my eyes from the sun because I can wear sunglasses. I can’t and won’t wear those stupid sunglass shade like things on my eye glasses and I find prescription eye glasses that get darker in the sun are usually heavy, uncomfortable and too dark to use indoors in low light conditions.

Here I am rambling when I was just about to tell you about this Discount Contact lens site that I found. I’ve never purchased contact lenses online but given that the prices are so much lower than when I’ve purchased them through my optometrist or even a wholesale eye wear store, I think I will be making a purchase soon.

Browsing through the site I see that they have all of the major brands- and quite a variety of each brand as well. They sell single day lenses, 30 day lenses, 1 – 2 week, 1-3 month disposable lenses as well as Toric and bifocal lenses. Pretty much any type that you can get in a store that sells prescription glasses and contact lenses – but the price is a heck of a lot better!

Discount Contact Lenses often has a sale going on or offers rebates on the products they sell. Oh and I like that they won Gold Honoree in Customer Support status at BizRate.com. That’s gotta mean that they have good service.

A week of appointments

December 12, 2006 by Tricia

Starting today I’m going to go through another week of doctors appointments. I have to see the family doctor this morning. One of the reason that I need to see her is to access whether I’m ready to go back to work or not. I hate to say this but I’ve been doing horribly lately and I think if they send me back I’ll be off work again by Christmas. I hate failing- and being off work feels like failure, and then trying to go back and getting sicker and sicker as I work my shifts also feels like a major failure. I hate this. I wish my Crohns would just settle down.

Then on Wednesday I get to see my gastrointernoligist. It’s time to go over the results of all the tests he’s put me through in the last several months from gastroscopy, coloscopy, CT enteroclysis, and uhmmm rectal MRI – why they didn’t take MRI photos of my small bowel while I was lying in that horrible machine for an hour I don’t know but they only did the one area. I already know that the scopes didn’t show anything – no surprise there, my problems are in the small bowel where the scopes don’t reach, but I don’t know the results of the CT. The MRI surprisingly, because I didn’t think I had any problems down there, did show granulomas, enlarged nodes – all signs of an inflammatory process going on. We’ll see how the doctor interprets all of these lovely results.

I also need to find out from him if he thinks I should try to return to work. What I’m hoping is that some of the results he obtained from the tests will give him some ideas, and maybe he’ll try me on different Crohn’s meds. Maybe ones that actually work so that I can feel better and get back to work.

I barely go out anymore because I get so nauseated when I’m walking around, or my abdomen starts hurting more and more. Unfortunately this means I’m not getting much exercise or activity – which I hate.

The last appointment that I have is on Friday afternoon. It’s with the Occupational health doctor from my workplace. It’s for him that I need to get notes from the other doctors that I’m seeing this week. Notes that tell him whether I should return to work or not. Since I’ve been off work for a year he needs some official paperwork to back things up if I end up staying off for another month or more.

Wish me luck- either that I spontaneously get better or that I have good appointments with my doctors and we come to some decisions that work for all of us – mainly me of course – anything that will make me start to get better would be great.

Learn more about careers in Nursing

December 8, 2006 by Tricia

I wonder how many people who read my page are nurses, or have thought of becoming a nurse as a career? Even though I haven’t been able to work for a while due to my Crohns, I can tell you that I love my career choice. If you’ve been reading this page for a while you probably also know that becoming a nurse wasn’t my first career choice. It took me a while to come around to nursing. I was a make up artist first, then a Jeweller to the trade, and only when the Jewelry trade went into recession did I decide that I wanted to make a career out of helping others.

As a nurse, I can tell you that you will never come home from your shift feeling glamorous, but you will come home from your shift most of the time feeling like you’ve made a difference in someones life. Whether that feeling of accomplishment comes from making someone who’s in pain feel just a little bit better, making someone laugh, or from saving a life – you’ll know you made a difference.

If you’ve been thinking of becoming a nurse or going back to school to take some specialty courses in nursing you should take a look at the Nursing Degree Guide. You’ll find information on the site about the various types of nurses/ nursing careers from LVN/LPN, RN, specialties and advanced practice Nursing.

The Nursing Degree guide also has information regarding the various types of Nursing Degrees that are available Online and in Universities, such as Associates Degree, Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree courses. If you are interested in getting a Degree you can read up on what’s involved in the course and the specialties that you can branch out into when you achieve your degree.

I really enjoyed reading this site and getting more information on the courses available to me. I was also pleased to find that if I wanted to take more courses that there is a way for me to take them online through the University of Phoenix, Kaplan Nursing and six other Colleges and Universities that offer Online courses.

I hope that if any of my readers have ever thought of a career in nursing that they will take a look at the Nursing Degree Guide for an explanation of the types of nursing careers that are available today. There are nursing shortages all over North America. We need more nurses to join us in our work. It’s demanding, but it’s also satisfying work.

I can tell you that one of the reasons why there are long waiting times in the ER and for surgeries is because of the nursing shortage. I work in one of the busiest ER’s in Canada and while we are likely one of the best staffed units in our hospital, most days we could easily double our staff and still have people waiting to be seen.

Screwed up sleep cycle

December 8, 2006 by Tricia

I’m exhausted.

I find myself staying up all night because of my pain and then sleeping well into the day. yeah I’m sleeping but my body really wants to sleep at night.

When I do get up my head is foggy and I can’t concentrate as well these days. I need to try to turn my rotten sleep cycle around again.

I’ve thought of trying to stay up through the night and into the day and then crashing sometime in the evening, but whenever I’ve tried that I only sleep for a few hours and wake up in so much pain that I’m awake for several hours before I can get it under control and go to bed again, and often by that time it’s like 6 am. Grrr.

I’ve got to turn this around.

Helping a relative find a nursing home

December 2, 2006 by Tricia

I spent some time on the phone earlier today talking with one of my aunts She’s living in Texas and while she’s originally from Canada she’s been living in Texas for at least 30 years or so. Her husband is older than she is by about 15 years and he hasn’t been doing well lately.

Caring for him has started to take it’s toll on her, and together she and her husband have decide that he’ll likely be moving into a nursing home or perhaps as a couple they might move into a retirement home with on site nursing care. It’s a tough decision to have to make for your spouse, or loved one or I presume even for yourself as you get older and can’t do all the things you used to do in the past.

I told my aunt that I’d try to look up some retirement and or nursing homes in her area for her. She doesn’t have a computer and I can certainly find things fast for her. Well I found a site called the Dallas hospice. There’s a lot of information on the site, and easy guides to help you find the type of care or facility that you’re looking for. I was impressed with the site and the amount of information on it.

I wrote down all of the information that I think will work for my aunt and her husband I’m going to be calling her later today. I feel kind of sad that they are going through this and have to make some tough decisions but proud that she came to me asking for some help and that I was able to help her.

Have you gone through this with your relatives? Finding nursing care or nursing homes? It’s hard isn’t it?
