Five Fascinating Health Benefits of Barley

September 15, 2012 by Trish

Barley is a whole grain high fiber member of grassfamily, also known as Hordeuom vulgare, it constitutes a major cereal grain. It can be fermented to an alcoholic drink, beer. Barley can be ingested in the form of brew, soups or barley bread. It is a healthy high fiber protein grain boasting numerous health benefits. The following are five fascinating health benefits of barley.

  • Barley help fight diabetes

The two types of diabetes (mellitus and insipidus) affect over a billion people globally. Nutritionists and health professionals have always given directions on how to prevent and treat diabetes. It involves a matter of lifestyle adjustments by making wise choices including weight loss and physical exercises. Proper and appropriate diet has been stressed by majority of experts including plenty of high fiber foods such as barley.

Barley is an excellent choice of food for those suffering from the two types of diabetes and pre-diabetes. Phytochemistry of barley reveals that barley contains a carbohydrate compound called beta-glucan. This is an insoluble fiber that promotes healthy blood sugar level by slowing down adsorption of glucose into the blood stream. Clinical trials have shown that mildly insulin resistant patients who ate muffins containing the barley beta-glucan had reduced concentration of blood sugar. This helps to boost fight against diabetes.

  • Barley grass extracts lower cholesterol level

Laboratory and clinical trials around the world give promising results regarding barleys potential in cholesterol reduction. A patient under a clinical study was subjected to a daily 20 grams dosage of grass barley and the blood cholesterol levels dropped significantly.

The chemical components of barley help it to scavenge existing on free radicals in an hydrogen exchange reaction mechanism. This was investigated using blood and the spinal fluid samples of an arthritis patient. Barley exhibits antioxidant properties. One is therefore advised to lower his/her blood cholesterol level by increasing the amount of barley they consume. With proven clinical records to lower cholesterol levels, barley can be added as a supplement in a healthy weight loss diet.

  • Cardiovascular disease risk reduction

Saturated fats pose a health hazard to the functioning of the hearth. Excess saturated fats raise the LDL cholesterol level lower the blood pressure of the affected individual. This increases the risk of cardiovascular risks. Barley limit intake of fats and cholesterol into the blood ensuring that the blood remains clean. As a result, it reduces the risk of cardiovascular heart related diseases such as low blood pressure.

  • Reduce risks of colon cancer

Barley contains soluble fiber that enhances digestion of food in the digestive tract. This reduces constipation and congestion of food along the digestive system. Barley therefore boosts efficiency of the digestive enzymes. This goes a long way to reducing the risk of colon cancer by ensuring that digestive system is healthy.

  • Breast cancer risk reduction

Laboratory investigations have revealed that Barley contains protease inhibitors that help in combating breast cancer by boosting body’s immunity. Clinical trials have confirmed this, though with limited efficiency as most patients consider other forms of treatment. However, this is a time demanding treatment procedure, this makes it riskier than it may sound.

A weekend to myself

September 8, 2012 by Tricia

As of tomorrow I will become a college student again. Hard to believe but it’s true! Ok, I’m only taking two courses and they are from home, but I am back to school.

I’m taking two distance education courses from George Brown College. They are nursing related courses. Since I’ve been off work on medical leave for some time I’m going to brush up on a few things and then in January I will be returning to my old job at the hospital if all goes well. Fingers crossed.

Hopefully nothing else happens that will hamper my progress such as my hand injury that occurred in June! That certainly put a huge delay on things! I’m still recovering from that. I don’t know if my hand will ever be the same.

I had a busy week last week. I was trying to get a lot of things done so that I could concentrate on starting my courses on Monday. As I said in my last post I was doing a lot of work on a number of my websites, upgrading and updating because I know I’m going to have less time in the near future to work on things. I also did a little research into possible inviting guest bloggers to write for some of my sites. We’ll see how that goes. I haven’t decided if I’m going to go in that direction or not. I certainly get a lot of offers as it is anyway!

Then .. I was also trying to prepare to go away this weekend. My nephew – the hockey player that I told you about earlier in the summer, is now living in Brockville and playing for the Brockville Braves. He’s playing his first professional hockey games this weekend. My husband and mother-in-law – and I, were all going to go to the Ottawa area to see him play this weekend, however I wasn’t feeling all that well by the time Friday rolled around so I nixed the trip for myself.

There was a lot of planning for the trip going on all week too. For quite a while it looked like up to 10 people were going! As in quite a few of my in-laws! I finally heard from my sister-in-law mid-week or so last week and she said that they weren’t going to see our nephew play this weekend and that they were going to go in October instead. It’s better that the family staggers visits. The poor kid is from Chicago and he’s away from home for the first time in his life so seeing family every few weeks might be a good thing.

It was nice talking with my sister-in-law though. I hadn’t talked with her for quite a while. They’d just come home from closing up their cottage. She was saying that their big thing to do this weekend was to go out and look for swimming pool pumps because they’re going to need a new one next summer for the pool at the cottage. I guess they are cheaper at this time of year.

So here I am on my own this weekend. Busy learning how to use the learning module for my online classes and still working on my sites. I am enjoying the peace and quite in the house though – there’s been too much going on this summer, too many people in the house. I like it when I have time to myself.

How is your weekend?

What’s for dinner?

August 25, 2012 by Tricia

I’m trying to decide what to make for dinner. It’s getting later and later and I still can’t decide. There’s a beautiful fillet of rainbow trout in the fridge that I should eat, but I just don’t feel like eating fish tonight. I should though because the fish will probably go bad soon if I don’t eat it.

I hate having to eat something just because it’s there .. but sometimes that’s what you have to do isn’t it! Oh well, if I don’t end up loving it my dog will get a little bit and she’ll love it.

My Lab is back to not eating very well again so anything I can do to encourage her to eat is worth doing! She’s been like this most of the summer. First it was a yeast infection in her bowel and now she’s gone into heat and I think that’s causing her to be a finicky eater again. Sigh … it seems whenever she gets sick she goes into heat. This will be her last heat let me tell ya!

Ok .. I’d better go gaze into the refrigerator and decide what we’re going to eat.

The bone scan results are in

July 31, 2012 by Tricia

I can’t believe how fast July has gone by. It seems like July only just started two weeks ago and here it is the end of the month. I’ve been so busy this month it’s just gone by so fast!

I haven’t been able to personally do much because my hand is still healing. I have no idea when my left hand will be back to normal or if it ever will. Yes it’s that bad.

The results of my bone scan are in and well .. there’s nothing definitive but there are some findings that are interesting. The hamate bone in my left wrist apparently has swollen bone marrow. Go figure. I guess that’s why the outer left side and top left side of my hand is still swollen and very tender.

The bone scan also showed that there was activity in the ulnar region of my left wrist (outer wrist) which corresponds to one of the areas I’m having pain .. but interestingly it also showed that there is a lot of activity in the joints of BOTH of my hands! So I may have early signs of arthritis or some kind of pain syndrome. Sigh. Well .. everyone in my family seems to have arthritis so that’s probably what it is .. but man .. I use my hands to make a living. This sucks!

I use my hands to write, to type, to create art, to photograph and to heal (I’m a nurse) … It’s been awful having my dominant hand useless for the better part of two months and now I’m learning that both of my hands might soon be quite painful sometime in the future. I certainly hope that the bone scan is wrong!

I saw the hand doctor last week and she thinks it’s going to be a few more weeks until that bone in my hand is healed. Hopefully healed. My thumb is still sore as well. It’s very weak and painful. So I have pain on both sides of my hand and it’s weak, crampy, achy and just not anything close to the way it should be. I wish I hadn’t fallen on that ladder!

Preparing for House Guests

July 15, 2012 by Tricia

I’m trying to get ready to have house guests again for a couple of days. My brother-in-law and nephew should be here sometime tomorrow and I think they’re staying until at least Tuesday, maybe longer.

The main purpose of the visit is to help with some renovations of our living room and dining room but of course it’s always nice to see family. They were away this weekend because my nephew was trying out for an OHL hockey team – hopefully he made the team. They’ll have to drive back to Chicago, which is where they’re from later this week.

My brother-in-law is a cigar smoker while an occasional cigar smoker. Mostly he smokes cigarettes. I think his latest brand of cigars is Rocky Patel which is one I’ve never heard of before but I guess he he brought it over from the US. Since this is now a non-smoking house he has to go outside and smoke. So far he doesn’t seem to mind that rule. I just hope it’s not pouring rain tomorrow like it has been today otherwise he may not like that very much.

Well, I suppose I should try to relax as the next few days will be quite hectic since we will have visitors and we will be doing renovations. I also have an appointment for another test on my hand. This time it’s a bone scan still trying to figure out what’s wrong with my hand. It’s a little better than it was but it still has a long way to go it seems.
