Blame the border for our desire to go to Brazil!

July 11, 2007 by Tricia

Last year we had a border from Brazil. Our previous borders had been from Vietnam so we didn’t know what to expect when he was moving in. It turned out that he was a very nice, quite guy who absolutely loved his country.

He talked about Brazil all the time, showing us photos, and talking about areas that his family would holiday in and so on.

I’d always thought of visiting Brazil, but actually talking to someone who lives in a country that I was interested in visiting gave me some insight into the country and increased my desire to take a holiday there some time.

I would imagine that it will be a year or more before we visit Brazil, perhaps we’ll even have another border from the country before we go ourselves.

I do know that I’d definitely like to see some of the historic sites, go somewhere to hear traditional Brazilian music, visit the famous Ipanema , and of course while in Rio de Janeiro we’d take a trip down to the Copacabana Beach. I’m sure we’ll have a whole list of things to do and places to see by the time we eventually visit Brazil.

Have you ever been to Brazil? Do you have any suggestions for me?

Chris and I went out on Saturday to see my nephews photo exhibit. We didn’t realize that there was a large outdoor art exhibit going on! My brother had made it sound like it was a small event, but it turned out that the Outdoor art exhibition has been going on for 40 years! There were 500 artists displaying their work.

I’m sure you can imagine how hard it was to find my nephew!

It’s a great thing that we went though. I visited each booth and in one of the booths we found an artist that created these glass fish. They were gorgeous!

When I saw them I thought that they’d be perfect for the “fake” theme for this weeks photo hunters. Yes I’m a little behind getting my post up, but I think I found a creative “fake” item.

That old TV show – Due South

July 5, 2007 by Tricia

I was watching an old TV show yesterday morning called Due South. It’s that TV show that was on 10 or 15 years ago about a Canadian Mountie working with a Chicago detective. Do you remember it?

I never watch the show when it was on, but it comes on a channel that I watch late at night and sometimes early in the morning so I’ve found myself watching it lately.

One of the strange things that I noticed in one of the scenes on the episode that I watched yesterday was that they had a Money Mart in the background. I thought Money Marts were only in Canada? Money Marts are the same thing as payday loan shops.

Was Due South filmed in Canada? I know a lot of shows are filmed in Canada but for some reason I always thought that one was filmed in the US. If I’m right about the Money Marts though, then it was filmed here in Canada.

Anyone know?

Thinking of furnishings for our basement recreation room

July 5, 2007 by Tricia

Chris and I are always talking about our home renovation projects. Yeah we’re not doing the projects so much as talking about them!

We talk about what we want to do, how we want to accomplish the reno and what we’ll do with whatever room when it’s done. I’m a full participant in our renovations – don’t be thinking Chris is a handyman … it’s me that does the planning and a good portion of the actual reno! Considering I’m sick that’s the main reason we’ve stalled on our renovations. Chris could start up on his own … but no …

Anyway. One of the big plans we have for the basement when it’s done is to make a den/ rec room out of the space. We’re going to get another HDTV for the basement and we both think it’d be cool to get home theater seating to complete the look and feel of the room.

We’ll have a regular movie night with our friends and or family. I can’t wait!

Do you have a room set up with an HDTV and home theater seating?

Make your own photo art at Photo Fiddle

July 4, 2007 by Tricia

I have to tell you about this really cool site called photo art. It’s a site where you can take one of your photos and using one of the 50 great styles they have to choose from – oil painting, collage, warhol pop art and so on – and turn it into wall art!

Obviously with my new SLR camera I’m going to be very much into photography for the next while so I can see myself playing around with some of my photos on photofiddle.com.

The site seems to be very easy to use. Just sign in or create a membership and then you can begin uploading a photo to apply a design style to. Remember there are over 50 design styles to work with so you are bound to create something unique and interesting when you work with your photo.

Here’s an example of what you can do with a scenic photo:

Once you are happy with your new design you can create a canvas or art print. According to the FAQ it takes about four days to complete your photo to photo art request, but once it’s done you’ll have some new art of your own creation to hang on your wall.

Until July 10th you can use this coupon to get 20% off your purchase price – promo code: SUMMER07 That sounds like a great deal to me!

PhotoFiddle has been discussed in PC Magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, Yahoo Tech Editor, USA Today and even made the Oprah O List.

Check it out for yourselves if this sounds interesting. I know once I upload my latest photos to my computer I might go and play with them on PhotoFiddle.com and see what I can do with them. Who knows, I might end up getting some new artwork!
