Vibrant and Expressive African Paintings

August 28, 2007 by Tricia

Do you appreciate fine works of art? Paintings full of life, vibrant colors and art work that gives us a glimpse of another culture?

If you have an interest in African paintings and art work you might appreciate the world class fine art that is being promoted at African-Encounters.com.

Paintings and prints such as the one I’ve included above are being featured in the African-Encounters.com online gallery. You can browse through the gallery and view artwork that’s been produced by contemporary African artists. You can also read the biography of each artist and learn how their life experiences have contributed to their art work.

Paintings and prints on display in the gallery are available for purchase. If you’re interested in any of the paintings simply click the “ask us” button below each paintings description.

There are some lovely pieces of artwork on display. I’m quite taken with a painting by Wiz Kudowor that’s been named “Earth Spirits III”. It’s just stunning. Do try to take a look at this painting if you visit the gallery.

Our artists and their works are a product of this evolving culture and through their works, our clients enjoy a refreshingly unique perspective of life. In turn, we offer our artists a larger audience to whom they can express their feelings, thoughts and social commentary, as well as the means to continue their artistic expression.

Disgusting! But then it all turned out ok

August 28, 2007 by Tricia

I got so grossed out last night.

On Sunday my husband and I went grocery shopping and I decided to buy some fresh fish while in the grocery store. I selected some Orange Roughy, 2 fillets, and 1 large Rainbow Trout fillet. I also got some fresh baby asparagus to have with the meal and the makings for a nice salad.

On Sunday evening I marinated the orange roughy fillets in wine and a squirt of lemon juice. I also added some fresh dill, paprika and a little chili power to the marinade. Chris grilled the fish and we had a very nice meal together.

Yesterday my husband thought he had to work. It turned out that it was his day off. Argh. He actually woke me up when he came back in the morning from work – he’d got up at 8 am and went to work, found out he didn’t have to work that day, visited with people for two hours and then came home and … woke me up to tell me he was home! Arghhh Considering that I don’t seem to sleep anymore I didn’t appreciate being woken up once I’d finally fallen asleep.

So later in the day I got up and Chris told me that one of our good friends had just broken up with his girlfriend and that he was feeling down. I told Chris to invite him over for dinner and that we’d have the rainbow trout and some shrimp since I know our friend just loves shrimp.

Skip to yesterday evening. Our friend and my husband were outside talking while I started to marinade the shrimp in a wine, a little bit of canola oil, lime, chili pepper and cayenne pepper marinade. I then pulled out the rainbow trout that we’d purchased the day before. Ew what’s that smell.

I took a look at the fish and the center of the fillet was kind of slimy and mushy whereas the rest of the meat along the edges looked fine. The mushy slimy meat smelled really bad too. Rotting fish smell. Yuck.

I was so disgusted I didn’t know whether I even wanted to have the shrimp or other fish ever again. It was disgusting.

I went outside and told the guys and Chris decided that they’d go to the store and get some more fish. I said ok, but don’t get rainbow trout. I just didn’t think I could handle that after seeing the other fish.

Chris ended up picking up halibut. It was halibut steaks rather than fillets. Nice thick pieces of fish.

The meal actually turned out really well. I think the halibut steaks turned out to be the nicest fish we’ve ever cooked on our own at home. To think things started out so bad and I’d felt like giving up fish!

The shrimp was also delicious. We had asparagus and a nice garden salad with a homemade balsamic vinaigrette along with the fish and shrimp that we’d grilled.

Then for dessert we had short cake. You know that flat angel food cake that you can buy? I suppose it’s for making a flan or for a short strawberry short cake. Well, I’d purchased fresh peaches late last week so I cut some up and scattered them over the thin angel food cake shell, then we picked some fresh strawberries from the garden. Mmmm what a nice light refreshing dessert to follow our wonderful meal.

What did you have for dinner last night? Anything good?

Anyone interested in an Internet book exchange?

August 24, 2007 by Tricia

I enjoy reading. Each night or rather since I’ve become quite the night owl as of late each early morning I go to bed and I read a little bit of a novel.

It seems that no matter how tired I am I can’t sleep without reading a little bit. Even if it’s only a paragraph or a page. It’s like reading is my sleeping pill.

I read enough books that I should borrow them from the library, but I don’t. I like having books when they come out and you can’t always get a new book at the library as you are competing with everyone else that wants to borrow the book.

So I buy my novels and every once in a while we’ll go to a used book store and turn in our books. We get some money back for the books. No where near what I paid for them originally, but it helps.

Do you enjoy reading? If you purchase your books what do you do with them? Do you save them for garage sales, throw them out, lend them to others or turn them in to a used book store like we do?

I just had a great idea. I tend to read horror novels, detective type murder mysteries and other thriller adventure novels. Perhaps some of you might be interested in trading books back and forth? I’d send you five novels and you could send me five that I haven’t read?

I say five, but it could be any number. I figure five is worth sending when you add in the cost of postage. Certainly you wouldn’t want to ship too many at once or the cost of shipping them would be too high.

If anyone’s interested in doing something like this let me know. Maybe I could set up a book exchange group.

BTW I do realize this contradicts what I said about borrowing a book from the library. I just thought this might be a good idea.

Traveling with a pet … Iguana!

August 22, 2007 by Tricia

Have I ever told you about my pet iguana and how fun it was to travel with him? I think I have, but it’s been a while since I talked about the dear boy. Unfortunately he’s no longer with us, but I’m sure he had a good life as our pet in the 11 years that we had him.

Traveling with any kind of pet can be interesting to say the least. Some take to it well and others never get used to being in a moving vehicle. I suppose they invented dog and cat carriers for the pets that just plain don’t travel well.

When we had our iguana we traveled a lot. My parents lived in another city that was a five hour drive away. Luckily they loved our iguana, Napoleon, and we had the room that we always stayed in set up so that it was iguana friendly. Yes, our pet basically had two homes since we traveled to see my parents so often.

Getting a friend to take care of him for the weekend while we were away for the weekend or while we were on holidays just wasn’t an option.

I’m sure dog and cat owners know that even though it’s not that hard to get someone to keep an eye on your pet while you are away some people are better at it than others. Well … if we wanted to go somewhere that we couldn’t take our iguana we’d have to literally train someone to care for him. Never mind that most people were unnecessarily afraid of him. So he came with us on our trips.

Most of the time he was really good in the car. He didn’t like going under bridges and he’d freak out a bit when we went under an overpass, but otherwise he’d spend most of the car trip sitting in our cars back window looking out at the traffic and scenery that we passed.

I think that most people who saw us with our iguana probably thought that we had a seven foot iguana replica in our back window. However, some people would notice when he moved and oh my! I think we almost caused a few accidents! We’d literally have cars, trucks and buses following our car or driving along side trying to get a better look at my boy. It was scary for us at times because it was obvious the drivers weren’t paying attention to the road.

The funniest time was the bus full of passengers. We could tell that the driver got on the bus’ intercom and told everyone to look to their left at the iguana in the car beside them because everyone had their face firmly pressed to the glass.

In the wintertime we often had to put our iguana in a pet carrier to keep him warm in the car, or we’d set up heating pads in the back window area that he could lie on and keep warm. We also turned on the window defrost thingy to keep the window a bit warmer. If it was extremely cold out he was definitely in the pet carrier.

I only wish that we could have used one of those cute dog bags to keep him in or carry him around in. He was just too big for one of those though.

We did always take a pet carrier with us when we traveled. He really didn’t like it and that’s why he mostly spent his time in the back window of the car. Certainly if he wouldn’t have gotten so stressed in it we would have used it for him most of the time as I’m sure he’d have been safer in a pet carrier while traveling. As it was we always tried to drive very carefully.

It was good to have a pet carrier on hand in case he was misbehaving or say the worst thing happened such as our car breaking down or we got into an accident … without a pet carrier on hand we’d have no safe way to carry him around. Of course one of the other reasons he didn’t really like the pet carrier was because we used that for vet trips too, but that’s a whole other story!

Have you traveled with your pet? Do you have an interesting story to share?

If you do travel with your pet does your dog, cat or whatever other creature you might have roam free in your vehicle or do you use a pet carrier or some kind?

It’s time to start thinking about Halloween!

August 21, 2007 by Tricia

You may think it’s a little early to start thinking about Halloween, but it’s already the end of August and I know people who start planning what they’ll do next Halloween almost from November 1st.

It’s a big deal.

I mean really. If you celebrate Halloween it’s one of the only times of year when you can truly be someone else. Dress yourself up, even take on a slightly different personality and get out there and have a good time.

In one of my career incarnations I was a makeup artist. I suppose I still am as I have the training behind me. As a result of my skills I was always quite popular come Halloween. Friends and family would come over to have me do their makeup and add some special effects to their costumes.

I guess you can tell that Halloween is still one of my favorite celebrations. I haven’t actually started to plan this years Halloween celebration, but I suppose it’s time to start thinking about it.

zombie.jpg The Costume Cauldron has a huge variety of Halloween costumes and items to decorate your home with, in fact it’s said that they have 14,000 Halloween related items.

They have everything from Sexy Halloween Costumes, to kids costumes, costumes for couples, movie or celebrity related costumes, funny costumes and so on. Just about anything you can think of really. They even have theatrical makeup and accessories to complete your look.

I think the year that I had the most fun helping people with their costumes was the year we all dressed up as the living dead or zombies. I had a lot of fun doing the makeup for that. The Costume Cauldron has a great zombie rot costume that would let anyone look like the living dead!

outhouse.jpgMy sister always had great costume ideas.

One year she had me help her dress up as a tampon. Unfortunately it was supposed to be a used one! Another year she went as a turd. Yes you heard me right.

Now I didn’t search all that hard for one of those types of costumes but I did find an outhouse costume! Isn’t that great?

If you enjoy Halloween as much as I do visit the Costume Cauldron and see if you can find something interesting to wear this year.

I’d love to hear what you might be dressing up as!
