The Beaches Jazz Festival was great

August 3, 2012 by Tricia

The Toronto Jazz Festival was on this past week. Last Saturday my husband and I went to see a couple of bands perform in Kew Gardens in the Beaches. We made some sandwiches, packed some drinks and brought some folding chairs – oh and we brought our dog Midnight along with us as well and we spent the afternoon enjoying some fantastic music. We saw a band called the Heavyweights Brass Band and then we listened to Leona Boyd perform.

After the performances in the park were over we walked down to the boardwalk with our dog and let our dog loose in the off leash area. Naturally, being a Labrador Retriever she went straight to the water and had a swim in Lake Ontario. As usual we had a terrible time getting her out of the water. She just like a little kid that doesn’t want to get out of the pool!

When we were finished spending some time at the beach we walked back up to Queen street. We were headed back towards our car, but of course we had every intention of walking on Queen for the Jazz street fest. Oh and we did .. we enjoyed several bands playing as we walked. The music was amazing and everyone there seemed to be having a great time!

I love this city. There’s so many great festivals and free events like this to attend. I love it.

Rizzoli & Isles: Burning Down the House

June 10, 2012 by Tricia

Rizzoli & Isles

Are you a fan of the TNT television show Rizzoli & Isles? I’m fairly new to the show. I missed the first season, but earlier this month I caught a season 2 marathon and I feel caught up and fairly prepared for season three. Oh .. and of course as I watched all those season two episodes I pretty much fell in love with the show and it’s characters.

Rizzoli & Isles promo

Based on characters created by best-selling crime novelist Tess Gerritsen, RIZZOLI & ISLES stars Angie Harmon as Jane Rizzoli, a tough-as-nails Boston police detective, and Sasha Alexander as Maura Isles, a smart, impeccably dressed medical examiner from a privileged background. Despite being complete opposites, the two women share an offbeat chemistry and strong working relationship that has helped them bust some of Boston’s most notorious criminals.

The Season Two finale left me with a lot of questions that I hope will be answered in the upcoming season.

The finale begins with a warehouse fire that kills a firefighter. Jane and Maura must investigate whether it was arson or an accident. As Maura starts asking questions it seems someone is becoming nervous. Maura and her mother and out walking after dinner and a car speeds down the street and hits Maura’s mother Constance (played by Jacqueline Bissett). Maura turns to Jane when her mother is injured – unknowingly interrupting a reunion of sorts of Jane and FBI agent Gabriel Dean (played by Billy Burke).

Constance Isles is quite severely injured and Maura is very upset. Jane continues the arson investigation and surprise – Paddy Doyle shows up in the hospital to make sure that Maura and her mother are ok. This is where I begin to wonder if Paddy knows Mauras mother? Paddy tries to tell Maura that he’s there to make sure she’s safe and I presume to warn her that the hit and run might have been aimed at her but she’s not really interested in talking to her criminal father. He even offered to tell her who her real mother was but she said Constance was her real mother.

As it turns out the hit and run and the warehouse fire are connected. The fire was arson and the firefighter was murdered as Jane and later Maura’s investigation begins to prove. It turns out that cough syrup was thrown at the firefighter and that caused his mask to flare up.

Jane tells Gabriel that Paddy is in town but asks him not to try to arrest him. She knows Paddy is protecting Maura. He agrees to not take any actions.

Later, when they figure out that one of the firefighters from the same unit as the dead fighter fighter was the arsonist and the driver in the hit and run attack on Maura and her mother Maura agrees to go under cover and meet him in the burned out warehouse to discuss some of her findings. Jane and frost are there to back up Maura and unbeknownst to Jane so is Agent Dean! Shortly after Maura begins to walk around the burned out warehouse the fireman shows up and says to her that she shouldn’t have come alone and he pulls out a gun. He says he was committing the fires because of budget cuts and now that she’s on to him he’s going to have to get rid of her.

That’s when the camera pans upward and we see Paddy standing on a walkway above. He pulls out a gun and shoots at the fireman. Agent Dean then shoots Paddy, Paddy shoots Dean and then Jane shoots Paddy … Paddy falls from the walkway to the ground. Is he dead? Probably not but he’s severely injured.

Maura runs to her fathers side and tries to help him. Jane tries to come near to help as well but Maura is devastated and tells Jane to get away.

Is this the end of their friendship? Can it be repaired? Will Paddy live? What is Paddy trying to tell Maura as he lies on the ground? It sounds like “hope”? Is Maura’s adoptive mother really her birth mother or does she know her birth mother? So many questions to be answered in the new season! Rizzoli & Isles returns for season 3. All new Tuesdays 9/8c on TNT. Episode one premiered on June 5th. If you missed the first episode I’m sure you can catch it On Demand at your cable company.

The sound of music

June 2, 2012 by Tricia

My husbands been practicing a particular song on his guitar almost daily in the last few weeks. He’s even bee bringing his guitar to work with him to play on his breaks and to practice with a few other people.

Why you ask? Well … Next Monday he’s playing at a special retirement dinner for the chief of surgery at our hospital. The doctor herself is going to be playing an instrument and singing and there are a few other people playing instruments and singing as well. I guess they’ve formed a “medical” band.

Chris always talks about going and playing in bars or at free Mike nights but he never seems to do that, however, he does end up playing at hospital related events every couple of months. It could be a talent show or the annual Christmas party or some special event – everyone seems to know and like Chris’ music so they ask him to play.

Since he’s been practicing so much at home I was thinking of getting him some nice headphones so that he can listen to the music as he plays even better. Headphones that will tune out outside noise. So I went searching and I found some Sennheiser studio headphones for sale so I might get him a pair of those. I’m sure he’ll like that.

I wonder what the next music project will be once this one is done?

A new trend? Men in High Heels?

April 3, 2012 by Tricia

I was watching the news the other day and they did a story about one of the latest fashion trends – high heels for …. MEN. Uh huh ..

Now I think I’ve heard of men occasionally wearing high heels in the past and I don’t mean shoes that are known as Lifts aka shoes that make short men taller – I mean boots with heels and so on … but this news story was showing men wearing mens’ dress shoes or loafers but they had 3 or 4 inch spike heels on them. It was very strange!

I really don’t think I could get used to it if this trend became common place. Even I don’t wear high heels very often. They’re uncomfortable … I can’t see men enjoying wearing them. LOL … No I think they’d prefer to stick to things like their comfortable running shoes, dress shoes, loafers, sandals, or even ariat boots.

What do you think? Do you think this trend will catch on? Have you heard of this?

My husband and his guitars

March 21, 2012 by Tricia

My husband has been playing his guitars a little bit more often in the last few months. He’s quite a talented musician and he’s played guitar since he was 9 years old, but over the last few years he really hasn’t played all that much.

I’ve always tried to encourage my husband to play his guitars. I think he feels like he’s bothering me when he plays his guitar, but we have a house with many rooms so there’s no reason why he couldn’t play almost every day if he played on one of the spare rooms or in the basement or even outside in the backyard in the summer.

Every once in a while he pulls out one of his guitars – he has five – and he talks about going to one of the bars near us that has an open mike night. An open Mike night is a night when amateur musicians take turns going up on stage and playing a song or two to entertain the audience. So far he hasn’t gone to an open Mike night. I don’t know why since he’s practiced for one several times – maybe he’s more nervous than he says?

Chris' Fender Duosonic
Chris' Fender Duosonic

I’m trying to remember exactly what kind of guitars he has. I can’t remember what kind of guitar his first acoustic guitar is, but he used to play it when he lived in student housing and he had everyone he knew sign it. It no longer holds a tune longer than a minute or so! His other acoustic is a very nice Larrivee that I bought for him five years ago.

His other three guitars are electric guitars and they are older, vintage models. One of his electric guitars is a Gibson from the early 70’s and the other two are Fender guitars. I’m not sure how old his Fenders are, but I know he loves them. Of course what he’d really like would be a 1959 Fender, but I believe those are very hard to come by and very expensive so it isn’t likely that he’ll be getting one of those anytime soon!

Lately he’s been playing his guitar to practice for a little musical concert that will take place for a doctors retirement this coming June. It’s a doctor that he works with in the hospital and he’s been asked to play at her retirement party so he’s been busy working on some songs. Everything sounds good from what I’ve heard so far. I’m sure as we get closer to the date I’ll be hearing a lot more guitar practice!
