We got Midnight this huge bone about two weeks ago … we’ve barely seen her since as she spends quite a bit of time chewing on her bone! It looks a little different now but it’s going to take her a long time to make it disappear.

Great site to find newsletters and RSS feeds of interest

February 7, 2008 by Tricia

Since I haven’t been feeling that well over the last few days I spent some time finding pet related forums to visit. I’m new to owning a dog and I’ve still got a lot to learn. It’s good to have a few good dog related sites bookmarked so I can go and ask some questions if I’m not sure if something my puppy is doing is normal or not.

One of the sites that I came across is called the iContact Community. It’s actually a forum that archives newsletters and blog posts from small- and medium-sized organizations across the globe. Of course I headed straight to the pets forum to see what I could find!

I found a newsletter for funny dog stories that I ended up liking so much I subscribed to it’s RSS feed. There were also a few other sites with dog related articles that I ended up subscribing to as well.

You can find newsletters and RSS feeds for all kinds of topics at the iContact Community website. Topics range from Arts, Automotive, Entertainment, Business, Education, Events, health, hobbies, politics and several more categories. Have a look, perhaps you’ll find some sites of interest.

Reflections

Wordless Wednesday

Mirror boxing

Don’t you love watching animals looking at themselves in a mirror? This cat looks like it’s about to tickle it’s reflection.

When I was walking Midnight our Lab puppy this afternoon we passed by a small apartment building and she happened to stop and gaze at the glass apartment door entrance. Well she started barking her head off after she finally noticed herself in the glass.

Sometimes when she sees her reflection I think she realizes that it’s herself and other times she seems to think it’s another dog. It’s pretty funny to watch her reaction.

So did the Groundhog see it’s shadow this year?

February 2, 2008 by Tricia

Well, here in Ontario one of our most famous groundhogs, Wiarton Willie, failed to see his shadow.

wiartonwilly.jpg

Do you know what that means folks? It’s going to be an early spring. Well, if you believe this whole groundhog shadow thing I mean.

Nova Scotia’s Shubenacadie Sam also failed to see his shadow so it looks like a good portion of Canada will get an early spring. However, Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow. So which groundhog should we believe? I’m going with good ‘ol Wiarton Willie.

So what lies behind our February 2nd groundhog ritual?

It’s thought that when German settlers came to North America in the 1700’s they brought their tradition of Candelmas. February 2nd is the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox and according to legend if the weather was good on that day the rest of the winter would be cold and stormy.

I guess this is kind of like our March legend eh? If March comes in like a Lamb it goes out like a Lion or vise versa. Of course that means if March begins with nice weather it will end with bad winter storms.

Of course, like quite a few other traditions or holidays Groundhog day became commercialized. It all started when the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper editor, Clymer Freas – don’t you love that name? – came up with the idea in 1886. It became quite popular and that’s why Pennsylvania now has it’s famous Punxsutawney Phil.

The Ontario town of Wiarton came up with Wiarton Willie in 1956.

Lost is back!

January 31, 2008 by Tricia

Well, as ticked off as I was about last nights season finale LOST recap I was totally pleased with this evenings first episode of the new season!

First of all it’s just nice to have a new show to watch again amid all the reruns that are airing! Even if I didn’t like Lost all that much I’d probably watch it since I’m sick to death of seeing reruns of shows that aired just a month or two ago! At least if the networks are going to show reruns during the writers strike go back to really old reruns that we might not remember quite as well. Please?

I really enjoyed seeing all of my favorite Lost characters again. I gotta tell you when Harley yelled out “I’m one of the Oceanic Six” as he was being arrested in “future Lost” it made me spend the rest of the show trying to figure out just which 6 ended up getting off the island. I think we’re supposed to assume that the rest of them died, but for some reason I think that maybe some of the crash survivors choose to stay on the island. Maybe that’s why Jack wants to go back?

I can’t wait for next weeks episode.

BTW it would have been a much better watching experience if my puppy wasn’t chewing on her humongous beef bone for the whole show!

IMG_3162

Geez! She kept dragging her bone off her dog bed and onto the hardwood floor so that she could gnaw on it and when she does that on the floor it sounds like she’s gnawing on the wood!
