How To Stay Safe & Secure On A Night Out

February 7, 2013 by Trish

What better way to forget the stresses of your working week than a great night out? With a little planning and common sense, you can ensure your night out is one to remember … not one you would rather forget!

  • Eat before you start drinking

It’s a great idea to have a decent meal before you begin your night out. Having a well-lined stomach will help your body better absorb alcohol and stop you getting too intoxicated, too fast.

  • Don’t go out alone

Someone by them self is an easy target, and in a group you lessen the odds of becoming a target for unsavoury attention. Travelling with friends can also make the taxi fare cheaper!Stay in well-lit, populated areas and never leave with someone you have just met, no matter how enticing they may seem.

  • Carry your phone

Ensure you have your mobile phone on you. Keep your valuables safely tucked away out of sight and on you at all times. Don’t take non-essential expensive items with you on your night out.

  • Never leave your drink unattended

Unfortunately, having your drink spiked is a common issue. Never, ever leave your drink! Keep it in your hand covered with your hand if necessary in a crowd. Remember not to accept drinks from strangers that you haven’t seen poured either.

  • Alcohol

Watch your alcohol intake. Excessive alcohol lowers your awareness and increases your vulnerability, making you more likely to make poor decisions. If you drink sensibly, alternating with glasses of water, you are more likely to stay in control – and avoid a mean hangover!

  • Taxis

Don’t drink and drive! If you don’t have a designated driver then taxis are your next best option. Make certain to have the phone number of a reputable taxi service pre-programmed into your mobile. It’s a lot simpler at the end of your night out when you might have had a few too many!

Many taxi companies offer a Call-Back service that informs you your car has arrived and even goes as far as to give you the vehicle’s details and a meeting point. Contact your local cab company to register and for more details. Another tip is to put a spare £10 in your shoe in case of emergency.

  • 0800-Reverse

This is a fantastic free service that you can use anywhere in the UK. Available on all mobile phones, home phones and even payphones. No need to subscribe to this service, you simply dial 0800 REVERSE (0800 7383773) and follow the prompts and the charges get reversed to you! Simple and easy to use. You only need to remember one phone number on your night out.

  • iPhone Users

For all you iPhone users out there, there is a free app you can install on your iPhone. Find My iPhone could be used as a great tracking tool for your partner to use at home so they know where you are at all times. This great app even gives you driving directions to where your iPhone is located!

Latin Tapas-Small Plates With New World Inspiration

December 30, 2012 by Trish

If you’re looking for interesting appetizers for a cocktail party, consider tapas.  One of the possible origins of the word, which translates to “top or cover”, is that when you are standing to eat and drink, you would need to set your small plate on top of your drink in order to handle both.  While tapas originated in Spain, fusion cuisine has allowed inventive chefs to introduce flavors from all over the world to tapas dishes.  This type of food also lends itself well to tasting menus if you want to plan a themed dinner party with many small courses, each served with a different wine.

Having spent most of my adult life in Latin American countries, I find that my cooking is always more than a little influenced by Latin flavors.  It’s nice too, that the grocery stores, which cater to Mexicans where I live in California, are stocked with seasonings and ingredients that are rarely found in most big chain grocery stores.

Freestyle Latino Cuisine

When taking liberties with traditional recipes, it’s important to take into consideration flavors that are currently trendy.  You can never go wrong with bacon.  Add bacon to something that didn’t have it before and people will stampede to try it.  Latin flavors have recently had a surge in popularity, even snack food companies have been coming up with chips that taste like cracked pepper, chili lime, chipotlé, jalapeño, and buffalo wings.  Korean flavors have also become super popular so we’re seeing an interesting fusion of Korean and Latin.  One of my favorite happy hour places offers Korean beef tacos or quesadillas that are wonderful.

The controversy over small plates in restaurants has polarized diners.  People either love them or hate them.  Some complain that it is expensive compared to ordering a normal meal, others say they never feel satisfied.  Even cartoon characters have an opinion.  Marge Simpson rants, “They’re like appetizers for a meal that never comes.”  People that love eating this way say that it is way more social, and it’s a wonderful way to try new things without committing to a full sized portion.  I think the key is to have the right dining companions.  With so many people avoiding ingredients, it can be difficult to order dishes to share.  If you have a group of friends without food issues, it is fun and enjoyable.

If you are going to serve tapas at your party, here are some of my favorite small plates.

Ceviche Shooters – serve shrimp ceviche in shot glasses, garnished with a sprig of cilantro

Patatas Criollas Bravas – crispy yellow potatoes with spicy chili sauce

Shrimp al Diablo – spicy shrimp in garlic sauce with chipotle flakes

Fried Green Tomatillos – served with whipped goat cheese blended with arugula, walnuts, and lemon

Stuffed Dates – with chorizo, wrapped in bacon

Grilled Street Corn – skewered corn with salty paprika butter and cotija cheese

Empanadas – pulled pork and caramelized onion with chipotle mayo

Mojito Shrimp Pinchos – grilled skewered shrimp with a minty rum marinade

Hamburguesita – sliders with chimichurri and crispy onions

Mexican Albóndigas – meatballs, with tomato chipotle sauce

Crab Croquetas – savory fritters with adobo tartar sauce

Sweet Corn Tamale Cakes – with Pisco Sauce

Holiday Cheer: Fun Ways to Spread that Holiday Cheer Around Your Neighborhood

December 22, 2012 by Trish

The holidays are supposed to be filled with fun and cheer, and a great way to ensure that everyone in your neighborhood is enjoying the holiday spirit, you need to make sure that you are spreading holiday cheer, and the following are fun ways to do so.

Pass out homemade cookies.

Spend a day whipping up some of your favorite holiday cookies, then put them on a nice holiday plate (but one you don’t want to get back) and start leaving them on the doorsteps of your neighbors (with a nice note of course). You’ll also want to be sure that you drop some off at local businesses, especially your police and fire stations, as this will surely get more people in the holiday mood.

Have a holiday party.

Get all of your neighbors together and invite them over for a fun holiday soiree. They’ll be super excited to enjoy each other’s company, and it can help put any Scrooges into a festive mood. Plus, this gives you a chance to see everyone now that it’s colder out and not much time is being spent outside.

Go caroling.

Grab a group of friends who are willing to sing in public and go door to door belting out your favorite holiday tunes. You may get a door or two slammed in your face, but you will also come across people who think that your caroling is truly amazing, and they will feel a sense of holiday cheer just because of you.

Donate.

The holidays are about giving, and it’s very important to use this time to teach others about the importance of giving. Make sure that you always have change on you so that you can donate it to the red buckets and any other charity that is out there. You should also use this time to go through your home and your closets to find old clothes, shoes, appliances and toys that you no longer need and donate them to a charity to help those in need. If you do this with your family, it’s a great way to teach children about the importance of giving.

Decorate your house.

You may not be Clark Griswold, but you can still put up some pretty decorations and bring cheer to those in your neighborhood. Spend a day putting lights up all over your house, both inside and out. Your decorations may just inspire one of your neighbors to do the same, and you may end up with a block of neighbors with decorated houses.

Volunteer.

There are plenty of charities and non profit organizations that are in need of volunteers, such as homeless shelters, and this is a great way to spread cheer. Not only will they be thankful at your generosity, but you will also feel better about yourself. Plus, you may inspire others to volunteer too, and this can spread more cheer around the neighborhood.

Top Things That Will Make Your 21st Live Up to the Hype

December 21, 2012 by Trish

From an individual standpoint, birthdays are the biggest and most special celebrations we have each year. While Christmas is a big day, this is a day we share with everyone else and that has little personal residence, whereas a birthday is a day that’s entirely devoted to us and that ensures we get all of that attention.

While birthdays are very special and a great excuse to celebrate with friends/ receive lots of lavish gifts though, some birthdays are even more special than others – and the 21st birthday is perhaps the most important of them all marking the point at which you truly become an adult and start living your life.

This is your big day, and it’s a big day that you will only get once in your life, and as such you’ve probably been building it up in your mind rather. Making the most of it then so that you aren’t let down and so that you don’t squander the opportunity is very important . Here are some ways to ensure your 21st is everything it’s meant to be.

Have a Huge Party

The best and most effective way to mark this special occasion is with a huge blowout that you can enjoy with all your friends and family that tops every other birthday party you’ve had up until this point. Some other things can add an edge to your 21st party too – for instance this is a great opportunity to hire a limousine, and you should order some good champagne too. And of course your parents should be willing to help you fund all this…

Make sure you make an extensive guest list, make sure that everyone is in great spirits, organize some games, find a good DJ, and make sure you look at the very best 21st birthday venues that will be big enough to house all the chaos.

Do Something Exciting

To mark your 21st birthday you should look at doing something unique and exciting that you wouldn’t normally. This doesn’t necessarily have to be on the day, as you should aim to make the whole year ‘big’ rather than just that one day, but it does need to be big enough to last in your memory whether that means going bungee jumping or going on an amazing holiday. Chances are that most of your friends will turn 21 this year too, so why don’t you all go somewhere amazing together?

Ask for Something Special

For your 21st birthday party people are likely going to be willing to spend a little more money on you than they normally might. You should make the most of this by asking for meaningful gifts that will stand the test of time rather than things you ‘need’ or impersonal gadgets. This might mean for instance asking for a nice watch, a nice piece of jewellery, keys to the house (though in this day and age you probably got your first set when you were four), a photo album or your first car/money toward it. This way you’ll have something that really marks your transition into adulthood and that will remind you of your big day for years to come.

Musical interludes

December 14, 2012 by Tricia

My husbands been playing his guitar a lot more often lately. He’s always played his guitar a lot, but as I said he’s playing more and more these days.

He has an obsession with Led Zeppelin recently. I don’t know why, but he’s been trying to figure out Kashmir on his acoustic guitar again. I know he figured it out several years ago but I think he forgot that he figured it out so he’s at it again.

I really don’t mind him playing guitar. I love it actually .. except, the only time he plays it is when I happen to be concentrating on something, like say when I’m studying for a big final exam for example. Sigh … He just had to look something up on Youtube last night in the middle of my studying and play along with it.

When he did stop playing guitar last night and I could resume studying he decided to restring his guitar. I noticed that he’s using a new brand of strings – good ernie ball strings. I’ve never seen him use that type before. He must be experimenting!

Hopefully he lets his guitar rest for a couple of days. I really have to have some peace and quite so I can concentrate, but after Sunday evening he can play some celebration songs because my exam will be done and the house can be full of all kinds of sound.
