My sites are using too much CPU resources? Help!

July 1, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve gone through a nightmare in the last few days!

I got a message from my web host on Thursday evening stating that my sites/ domains were using too much of the web hosts resources on the server that they were on and that they had moved my sites to a non-production server until I could either figure out what was causing the drain on resources or until I decided to upgrade to a VPS hosting plan or a dedicated servers hosting plan.

Well, both of those options are more expensive and while I know my traffic has gone up recently and continues to rise I’m certain that it’s not high enough to warrant upgrading my hosting account just yet.

So I stayed up Thursday night and worked on my sites. Looking over all the stats to see if I could figure out which files were being used too often or if there were any files or folders in my domain directories that shouldn’t be there.

I didn’t find anything abnormal but I did deactivate a few plugins that I thought might use more of the servers resources than the others. That’s all I could think to do.

I’ve also upgraded the Google Sitemap plugin that I was using to the newest beta version as that one is said to go easier on CPU resources than the last stable version.

So today … well today is Canada Day. We had a friend over for the weekend so I left my sites alone briefly last night and earlier today. We’d been supposed to go out of town, but that wasn’t going to happen when there was the possibility of me losing my sites or of them going down. You see I was still waiting to hear back from my web host. I’d written to them twice since I got their message on Thursday evening and didn’t end up hearing from them until today! Grrrr.

Unfortunately the message that I got from them today was that my sites CPU usage had increased! Aaaah! It shouldn’t have increased! What the heck????

They also told me that they’d disabled the index.php file for this site because:

We have been forced to disable your script(index.php) located in
(/home/thewe22/public_html/feverishthoughts/index.php) as they appear to have
been exploited.

Well what does that mean? Was my site hacked? Did someone try to access my site with a script?

I have no idea, but the result was that Tricia’s Musings was down for the count.

I was advised to again search for any scripts of files in my directories that didn’t belong (didn’t find any) and to upgrade my software.

So I’ve upgraded Tricia’s Musings to the most recent version of WordPress. As I said earlier I also upgraded the Google Sitemap plugin. I’ve turned off Bad Behavior (now I’ll be hit with spam!) and I’ve installed WP-Cache.

I still have a number of plugins running. I’ve turned off a number of them, but I do still have several activated.

If CPU usage is still high I’ll turn off all but Akismet and see how that goes.

If you have any ideas for me as to what else I might be able to do to limit the CPU usage on my sites I’d love to hear it.

My Comment Policy

June 27, 2007 by Tricia

In an earlier post I discussed the fact that all of our blogs, my own and my husbands, are do follow blogs. This means that you’ll get a real link when you leave a comment.

I’m doing this because I’d like to build up my readership and give a little something back to those who leave comments regularly.

Each comment takes a tiny piece of my sites Page Rank with it though so I appreciate getting decent comments. Comments that look spammy or look like someone is just advertising their own sites or products are not appreciated.

By decent comment, I mean that if you are taking the time to reply to a post on any blog please don’t say “nice post” or “Nice blog” or “Nice picture” or “Funny ha ha”. Yes, sometimes comments like this are real, but most of the time when someone leaves such a short comment they are just commenting for the sake of commenting.

Since I’m giving away free links- each one taking a tiny bit of my sites PR with it – please don’t make me regret my gift to you. I can tell when people are following the do follow blogroll or other do follow lists that are out there because these people will hit all my sites and leave similar comments on each one.

Write a comment that adds to the post. Did it touch you in some way? Do you have a similar experience to share? Have you used the site or product that I’m discussing in my post? If so what are you thoughts on it? If you haven’t used it does it sound like something worth trying?

If you really don’t have anything to say about a post don’t feel that you have to comment for the sake of commenting. Everyone loves getting comments but I enjoy getting comments that are little more than “Hey there, nice blog, come and visit mine.”. I bet you do too.

If you leave extra links in your comment do they really relate to the post or are you advertising something?

I’ve taken to removing extra links if I don’t feel that they contribute to the post or that the person is taking advantage of my dofollow policy.

I’ve also deleted comments that do not add to the conversation.

This may sound harsh, but if I feel that someone is abusing my blog to get backlinks why should I allow it. Would you?

Want a link on a PR5 website?

June 26, 2007 by Tricia

I bet you do!

Well, one way to get a link is to leave a decent comment on any of the posts on this site. This blog is a do follow blog – as are all of the blogs that my husband and run. So whenever you comment you get a link that the search engines will pick up and count towards backlinks for your site.

Cool eh?

If you want to be a do follow blogger so that you can reward those who add to your posts conversation just visit the Do Follow Blogroll page. let me know you are are a Do Follow Blogger and I’ll add you to the list (adding blogroll to your site is a requirement).

Also, if you comment often enough over the month on this blog you’ll also get a spot in the Top Commentator section – see right sidebar.

Another way to get a link on a PR5 blog is to write a post and send a trackback to Kate’s blog Electric Venom. Every Tuesday and Friday she does a Bite Me post and welcomes trackbacks to her site allowing visitors to get not one but two links to her site. See, she’s a do follow blogger so just by leaving her a comment on any of her posts you’ll get a link too.

Kate’s blog is a really good read so you won’t regret visiting her site regularly, and as I said, she gives the love back with her linkylove trackback Bite Me posts.

Spam!!!

June 25, 2007 by Tricia

Ever since I installed Bad Behavior back in early February I’ve had a marked decrease in Spam. Sometimes I go a few days before any spam makes it through and of course Akismet is still turned on so it catches whatever Bad Behavior misses.

Now before I installed bad behavior I was sometimes getting 600 + spam in my Akismet Spam area each day! Not just on this blog either! My husband and I have several blogs on the go and a few were getting extremely high amounts of spam each day, and others were only getting the lowly amount of a 100 – 200 spam messages each day.

Bad behavior put an end to all that. As I said there’s days that no spam gets through to me, and others where there’s only one or two on each blog.

However, I’ve noticed over the last week or so that spams been on the increase again, particularly for this blog. It’s up to 20 or 30 a day. Maybe more. It’s not like I’m counting, however I am regularly cleaning out 10 or 11 at a time.

So what’s going on? Have I become an even bigger target than I used to be, or has something changed with Bad Behavior and or Akismet?

I’m not really complaining. Not that much anyway. Heck, if I hadn’t installed bad behavior when I did I’d probably be getting 1000 spam each and every day on several blogs!

Is anyone else using both Bad Behavior and Akismet? Have you had an increase in spam getting caught in your Akismet Spam area lately?

BTW while we are talking about spam … if you are leaving me multiple links to add to the Do Follow Blogroll or one of the other blogrolls that I run – don’t do it, unless you’ve already added the blogroll to your site. Just send me an inquiry as I’m going to email you with the blogroll code and other helpful info anyway. You can give me the links when you reply to the email.

You see, if you put multiple links in your comment it often goes into my spam folder. Luckily I do check my spam box but if I start getting hundreds of spam comments again believe me, I won’t be checking anymore.

Also, if you sign your comment with an Alexa redirect or use a tiny url to cover the Alexa redirect that often goes into spam too. I look at my spam comments – a lot of other bloggers don’t. Your comments might be going to spam and never being read! Don’t waste your time, sign your comments properly. Please.

Promoting your blog

June 20, 2007 by Tricia

I was wondering … what kinds of things have you don’t to promote your site?

If you haven’t already, I’d recommend that you add your site to all the big search engines – Google, MSN, and Yahoo. Then get your site listed in Dmoz, Truth Laid Bear, and any a web directory that suits your sites topic.

Niche directories are great to be listed in if your website or blog is about a specific niche topic.

Another thing that I do try to try to promote my site is comment on blogs. Now, I haven’t been quite as good about this lately as I used to be, but it’s a good thing to do. Think about it. When someone is kind enough to leave a comment on your site you probably visit their blog. Especially if they’ve left a great comment. So it makes sense to visit other peoples blogs regularly and leave a comment. You should get some return traffic by doing this and if a blogger likes your site enough they might even add you to their blogroll or write a post about your site.

What else do you do to promote your site?
