Interesting Sites

August 25, 2006 by Tricia

As I’ve been sitting here surfing I’ve come across several new sites in the past week. I’d like to share a few with you.

All links open in a new tab.

Flip Cancer the Bird:

Do you know someone that has Cancer or who is a survivor? Did someone you know pass away because they had Cancer? Well here’s your chance to flip cancer the bird. Submit your Flip Cancer the bird photo to this site and they will donate .50 cents to cancer research.

I’m going to send in a photo. Heck I can send in a ton of photos since I know several people who have had cancer or who have died because of it. Some of the photos are hilarious and some are kind of sad. Visit the site and send in your photo showing how angry you are at Cancer.

Bloggy Gossip:

This is a wonderful new site that passes along information from our Blogging world. This discuss many different topics ranging from bloggers who are trying to raise donation money for a good cause, to new blogrolls and memes that have started up, and sites that are doing interesting activities that their visitors can participate in. Check it out and feel free to tell them about your site if you have something interesting happening.

Have you come across any fantastic sites lately? Why not help them get some attention and mention them in one of your posts.

Popular Blogger Fired for Blogging

July 28, 2006 by Tricia

Unbelievable!

My dear friend Mr. Fab of Pointless Drivel has been fired for having a blog. Some IDIOT in his workplace apparently complained that his having a blog created a “Hostile Work Environment”.

Yes, he did occasionally write about his work, workplace and his co-workers. But, and big BUT it is, he never ever said anything bad about his workplace or his co-workers. He would occasionally poke fun at his co-workers but I’m sure that it would be clear to anyone reading his blog that he was joking. Heck, most of the co-workers that he wrote about ended up doing guest posts on his site from time to time.

It’s rare for people to actually love their job, or at least I think it is since I hear more complaints about peoples jobs or workplaces than compliments. However, Mr. Fab was one of those rare individuals who happened to love his job. He loved it so much that he had planned to work there until retirement.

Blogs are online journals. Many bloggers use their blogs to write about the day to day happenings in their life. For those of us that work, there’s a good chance that from time to time we are going to write about our work, our workplace or even our co-workers. Particularly if we either hate or love our job.

I haven’t worked due to illness for almost 9 months now, but I too love my job and I’ve written about it occasionally. I’m sure that when I do get back to work I’ll write about it more often. Or, at least I thought I would until I heard that this had happened to Mr. Fab on Wednesday.

Since I’m a nurse, if I were to get fired from my job for having a blog and or writing about my workplace in my blog it would probably be because I compromised a patients or the hospitals confidentiality. That, of course, will not happen, because if and when I do write about my work I plan to be very vague about the details. I don’t think I’ll let any of my co-workers know that I have a blog either.

I don’t plan to hide who I am or where I am as I think it would be easy enough for someone who knows me or who wants to find out who I am to figure it out by reading this blog and doing a bit of digging. But I’m not going to make it easy by telling my co-workers about this site either.

I’m also not going to promise myself that I won’t write about my work. I love my job, it’s part of my life and who I am and I don’t think that I could stop myself from mentioning a few things about work or my profession from time to time.

I also don’t think that Mr. Fab could have stopped himself from writing about his work occasionally either as it was part of him too. He loved his job and it sounds like he was a fantastic employee to have around. He planned fund raising events and entertained at them and other work related events. He traveled for his job too. What a great blogging opportunity! Travel and write about your experiences. How could he NOT write about it I ask.

He didn’t blog from work. He didn’t write anything bad about his workplace or co-workers. Why was he fired? Why wasn’t he given a warning rather than the axe? What he thinks happened is that someone that he might have offended in someway at work, or perhaps someone that might have something to gain if he were either reprimanded or fired went to the boss and LIED about his blogging activities. Go read his blog, obviously his boss didn’t ’cause there’s nothing there that would create a Hostile work environment. Nothing.

It just doesn’t make any sense. I’m very upset for him that this has happened. He’s in Florida, and according to the laws there they can fire you without first giving you a warning, or at least I think that is the case. Either way, I do hope that he finds some way to fight this. It’s a shame really, and I hope his former workplace realizes that they did themselves a disservice by firing him. He was a good worker, with a great attitude who loved his job. That’s rare.

I’ve worked with far too many people over the years who to them, their job is just a job, and they barely gave 50% of themselves to their work. For the most part I’m talking about nurses. Now do you want to be cared for by a nurse that is only there because it’s a job or one who loves her work and actually cares how you feel? Yeah, I thought so. Then there’s people like Mr. Fab who sounds like he gave more than 100%, that’s what I mean by rare.

Go over to Mr. Fabs site and read his last three posts for a better idea of just what happened to him and to give him a cyber hug.

Some questions for you before you go:

  1. Do you write about your work on your blog?
  2. Do you hide your identity and even perhaps where you are from?
  3. Do your co-workers, bosses or family know about your blog or visit your blog?
  4. If your co-workers, boss or family reads your blog has it ever gotten you into a situation you regret?

Come on, talk to me.

I’ve been Hacked!

July 4, 2006 by Tricia

Unbelievable! This is a week of firsts.

Sunday evening I received that lovely comment telling me how boring one of my posts was, and then on Monday, as I was going over my various sites stats I discovered that my main web site had been hacked.

This just goes to show the importance of checking your stats daily. Which I usually do, but I slacked off in the last two weeks and hadn’t checked them at all in that time.

Someone snuck into my account and added a new directory for Ringtones and added about 50 html pages into that directory. The pages automatically redirected to the hackers site where the pages were set up with various affiliate links for various products.

I informed my Host immediately when I discovered the problem. I even left the directory on my site so that my host company could have a look and trace the hacker. They’re working on it now, and I’ve since removed the directory. At this point though, my Host says that the hacker must have figured out my log in info and got in that way. I told them that I don’t even have my log in written down anywhere, but whatever, my log in info is all changed now.

I still think I’m fairly lucky. The hack could have been worse, they could have messed up my blogs or my CMS managed web site – Reptile Logic, but instead they only added a new directory into my main web site Tricia’s Chinese water dragon, reptile and amphibian care page, which has been in existence for 10.5 years. That’s the first time any of my sites have been broken into in all that time.

I do have some other news – news that I can’t tell you too much about until Thursday. Ha tease! You know those companies that exist specifically to create a Buzz about new products? Well I’ve been asked to create some buzz for one of them. I’m being given a product free of charge to use as I chose. I can write about it and even use it on my site if I want to – or not. No obligation apparently. We’ll see how that part works out. I think I will be writing about the product though as it should go well with this site and perhaps one or two of my other blogs.

Can you guess what it is that I might create some buzz about?

The Pajama Mama

March 16, 2006 by Tricia

I had a very hard time deciding who to rent my space to this week. I found all the bidders to have interesting content and I enjoyed them all. So how did I pick this weeks renter Ms Pajama Mama? With great difficulty!

My first thought was- ok, they are all great contenders, how do I pick? I wonder which blog is the youngest and could use more traffic? I mean- that’s why we are renting space on other sites and offering space to others isn’t it? Well, it turns out that all the sites that wanted to be my room-mate this week are fairly young. I think the oldest blog was 9 months old- started in May 2005, and the youngest just started up in February from all appearances.

I eventually decided on the Pajama Mama< because she is promoting a wonderful cause in her latest post. She has three children - two of which happen to be affected by Down Syndrome . March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day, and this of course is the cause that she is promoting. She discusses some of the ins and outs of caring for children with this special condition, including periods of self doubt as a mother. When I was growing up there was a much older boy with Down Syndrome on our street and he was always such a joy to be around. Very caring, funny, thoughtful. As a nurse I also know that people affected by Down Syndrome also tend to have ongoing- often serious medical problems. The Pajama mama may face some daunting times in the future, but she will also have a large amount of joy in her life by having adopted these two girls. So between her promotion of a good cause, and ongoing posts about her three children, fostering and adoption her site caught caught my eye as the one I would rent to this week. So go give my last renters site a visit and learn more about World Down Syndrome day as a result while you are there. :) As is my tradition, I'll give the other bidders a little love and mini-article: Pupsickle is a site created by a woman living in the cold cold north- Fairbanks, Alaska to be exact! Some of her posts cover events that are specific to her area- such as the world ice art championship and weird weather, moose cookies, and other posts discuss her dancing poodle and her latest post on how her dog actually performs surgery on various objects. Visit her site to see some wonderful photos and read some interesting stories. Vandelay industries - an eclectic site. Articles the latest movies and hot television shows- I'm not really big on tv show articles but I'll read his articles of shows I don't even watch because the writing is so humorous. Right now he's in mourning for Tony from the Soprano's and hoping that it just ain't true! He also writes about general topics- such as why he just bought shampoo for the first time in over 3 years. Check out his list of "20 things that I don't care about". I'm surprised he didn't get more comments for that one since I'm sure there are a number of people that either really care about or love some of the things that he doesn't care about- or who would tend to agree with him. Go visit and see if you agree with his list or not and let him know why. Taste the world - Great writing- some humorous posts that involve her latest PMS experience, adventures at the hair dressers. She's had some interesting experiences too- read about her adventures in learning to fly a plane AND a helicopter. One cool lady I tell ya. Read her Dear John letter to Yahoo Hosting (March 11th), it's hilarious. :) Gee- I'm still in her March posts and I could give praise to most of them. Go visit her site for yourself and see what I mean. Whatchu tawkin bout - A very well written site. Her latest post is about teaching a large group of 8th graders (she's a teacher of course) how to do the Hustle. Complete with the actual music if you choose. I want pictures of those lessons. Her dog has been diagnosed with cancer and she writes about that in some of her posts and about how she's trying to give her beloved pet a quality life. There are a variety of topics to choose from - troubles with her hot tub, getting to travel for teachers conferences, in-law troubles ... Find out what her "burning Itch" is by visiting her site.
