Stop cyberbullying

March 30, 2007 by Tricia

Did you know that BlogHer has decided to official make this day, March 30th – Stop Cyberbullying Day”? This has come about in response to a woman, Kathy Sierra, who is being cyberbullied.

She’s been getting death threats on her blog and others, apparently A List bloggers have joined in and have posted her personal information in various places on the net. Information such as her address, social security number and so on.

I read Kathy’s blog the other day and she doesn’t know if these threats are real or if it’s just bullying. Either way, it’s changed the way that she blogs- her comments are turned off now, and how she lives too. She’s canceled speaking engagements and other plans in favor of staying home where she’s safe. She may not even blog again. That’s how deeply this cyberbullying has affected her.

This is just disgusting. I can’t believe that people would do something like that to another blogger.

I know how I feel when someone has left a nasty comment on one of my sites. This has been very rare, but it happens. It probably happens to just about everyone at some point. However, to have nasty images and posts spread across the net, and threatening comments left on her blog takes it to a new level. It’s terrible.

Policing the Internet

March 5, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve gotta rant –

I got a comment two weeks ago on a Photo Hunter post. Actually I got the same comment on two of my sites.

A likely well meaning person got it in their head to inform me of the rules of the Photo Hunter meme. Specifically, they copied and pasted the part of the rules which says that the photo I use must be my own.

Yes, I do know that that is one of the rules of the game. You don’t have to tell me. Most of the time I do in fact post my own photos. I am a photographer after all, why wouldn’t I want to show my own work whenever I can?

Unfortunately, I don’t always have photos that fit the theme. I don’t have furry pets or kids. It’s winter here. Plus I’m sick and stuck inside the house. I don’t get out much at all. Not even to shop these days. So yes, occasionally I’ll find a photo that fits the theme on a free site that I can download the photo from without causing any harm. For the last photo hunt I used a photo that a photographer friend had given me permission to use as I pleased.

It seems that I can’t win for losing these days.

I even get anonymous comments from people occasionally telling me that Wordless Wednesdays are supposed to be wordless. No way? I had no clue what Wordless Wednesday meant.

Yes I really do know, but I have a reason for writing in my Wordless Wednesday posts and I’ll probably keep doing it too.

I almost always play by the rules in everything that I do. Except it doesn’t pay since I still get told what to do, or that I did something wrong – even when I didn’t.

For example, two weeks ago I wrote a post for an advertiser. Four days later the same writing opportunity came up and my husband, who has a separate account of his own with a “blogging” company also took the writing opportunity on his site – which happens to be on a sub directory of this domain. The advertiser in question didn’t exclude any domains when he or she made their advertising opportunity. Turns out, after the fact, that the advertiser didn’t want two links from the same domain. Unfortunately the rules of the writing opportunity didn’t say that, and with my husband having his own account I can’t hang over his shoulder and tell him what he should or shouldn’t write. Somehow I was the one penalized for the action though. I followed the rules to a T and so did my husband, but guess what? It was still somehow our fault. I’m still waiting to find out how that whole saga will turn out. I was told to resubmit my rejected post a week and a half ago. I have a nagging feeling that they are going to let me leave it up for 30 days and then reject it again. Oh I’ll be so mad if they do that.

Next on the list … I’ve found three sites copying my whole posts onto their site. Giving no credit back to my site and claiming as their own. I complained to the authors and wrote about it on the blog that had the articles stolen yet I was told by at least one commenter that I didn’t have a right to be upset. Huh?

So to heck with it.

I do things right and things go wrong and I get told that I’m wrong. I do one little thing that isn’t right and never mind that a lot of people post photos that aren’t their own, or write in posts that are supposed to be wordless – I get the rules copied into my comment area. It wouldn’t bother me so much if it was the meme owner who wrote to me, but it was someone that took it upon themselves to police the internet.

After the way last month went I just feel like saying “Forget it”.

You know, I see people doing this all the time. Policing the internet I mean.

Telling people that they spelled words wrong in their posts on their blogs, mailing lists or in forums and just butting in where they have no business in the first place.

Those people just need to mind their own business. Keep it to yourself because I don’t want to hear it. If you see something on the internet that bugs you enough that you feel you must comment why not just blog about it on your own site?

Keep it off mine though.

Finding my writing focus

March 1, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve spent a few of the last posts discussing my husband and I’s various blogs. I’m going to be re-designing a few of their themes and re-organizing all of the sites topics/categories and sidebars in order to make them much more user friendly.

Now I’m trying to decide what to do with this blog.

In the past this site has been a general catch all. If I decide to write about a television show that I just watched I write about it here. If Chris and I are busy working on home renovations I write about it here. I think that’s confused the focus of this site.

I mean I could write about DIY, home renovation and home decor on my gardening blog, or simply create a new blog altogether to talk about those topics. I do talk about them often enough on this site and my gardening site that I could justify creating a new blog just for those topics.

Also, now that I have my celebrity blog I think I could get away with writing about television show episodes or documentaries that have caught my attention on that site rather than on this one.

My other two blogs, the newest of all are web design and internet technology related. Posts about cool internet related stuff will probably get posted over there more often now. Although if I find something really cool that I think you guys will like I’ll be sure to let you know about it here too. Or at least point you over to The Web Files for a read.

If I take away the Home renovation, decor, gardening, technology and entertainment related posts from this blog what does that leave? Self, health, lifestyle, home life, relationship, shopping and general stuff. I believe that for the most part those are the kinds of things I talk about most often on this blog anyway.

Does that sound like a plan? Would you still keep coming back to read this blog and perhaps visit my our other sites more often to read some of the topics that I’ve diverted to the newer blogs on their own sites?

I’d really like your input before I start making major changes to this blog or any of the others that I write on. I don’t want to lose readers. I want you to continue to return and hopefully build a larger readership as a result of each of my blogs being more focused.

Feedback please?

Time to take stalk and work on our blogs

February 27, 2007 by Tricia

I’ve been going over all of the sites that my husband and I work on and I think I’m going to re-organize and revamp some of the sites.

I think we’re going to work on a new theme for Odd Planet since the current theme is a little bit messed up. The sidebar scrolls into the bottom bars in the footer, and the comment area is messed up for first time commenter’s. I think that’s the site that needs the most immediate attention because I’m sure that with the comment area being a little screwy that some people who’d like to leave a comment have probably ended up leaving without giving the feedback that they’d intended to leave.

Celebrity Scoop and Guitar Licks are both using the same theme. I like the theme, but I haven’t done a thing to customize it. All of my long time readers know I re-work themes or make my own for our sites. I’m embarrassed that I haven’t had the time to work on the themes for those sites and give them the personality that they desperately need.

Speaking of needing more time. I have two more blogs that I’ve started! I created The Web Files on this feverishthoughts.com domain. It was meant to be a technology blog – talking about different things that website owners and bloggers could use on their sites, or news from the world of the Internet. I had also started creating a number of “How – To” files. You know – tips like how to put a blogroll in your sidebar, or how to make a drop down menu. I have about 50 posts in draft on that site.

What I think I’m going to do instead … well what I’ve already done is put the posts from the original Web Files site onto a new domain called thewebfiles.com . This new site, on a new domain will continue where I left off, and the old “Web files” will become a true web design site.

I’m still writing Watching House, but since there’s only been three new episodes of House so far this year I’m starting to have a hard time finding something to write about each day. If House doesn’t start airing new episodes regularly beginning in March I may quit writing that blog.

Why am I telling you this? Well, if you start to see changes occurring on some of the blogs I’ve listed above please feel free to give Chris and I some feedback. We’d love to know if you like the sites and their design as well.

I don’t talk about our other sites very often, but if you like them please feel free to bookmark them or add them to your blogroll. The newer sites could use a little linky love if anyone is interested in writing up an article or post about them please let me know.

I got me some swag!

January 27, 2007 by Tricia

Finally!

P Swag

P has been giving away some of the P branded items to registered members. I think it’s there way of saying thanks to all of their posties for doing a good job promoting the company. I believe that the majority of P members will eventually get some free swag.

I’m not actually sure when it arrived.

You see, we found it on our enclosed front porch on Friday evening near the door, but tucked behind a chair. The green box was post marked January 9th, and the package was coming from Florida by Global Priority mail. I have no idea if that was express delivery or regular ground delivery, but I would assume that it would normally take a week or a bit more to get to me here in Toronto. So …. I have a feeling that it might have been sitting on my front porch for most of the week.

Remember it was hidden behind a chair, and whoever delivered it (probably Canada Post?) didn’t leave any notice of a package.

I had been keeping an eye on the porch just in case it arrived. I live in a pretty good neighborhood and unless something is marked with a specific value the postman often leaves packages in our enclosed porch. Usually they aren’t hidden quite as well. As I said I had looked out there every now and then glancing at the table and the surfaces of the two chairs but I didn’t see anything. Now I know why!

Anyway, as you can see the box contained one large foam finger. Maybe I can use that in one of the photo or video at some point. There was also a T-shirt that says “spreadin’ like peanut butter” , a gigantic 13 inch pen! I tried to write with it and because it’s so big it’s kind of heavy so it wasn’t that easy to write with. My husband didn’t have any trouble though. Maybe since I’m a lefty it’s harder to use? There was also a Pingo calling card worth $2.50. We can use that to make a long distance call or two. There was also a gift card for FamilyRecRoom.com but the site isn’t loading for me right now so I’m not sure what they sell. The final object was Mighty Minty Mints which I’m sure I’ll enjoy.

Take a look at the photo above. You see the rectangular box like object that’s under the round mint container? That’s the T-Shirt. I just unwrapped it so I could see what size they sent me since it doesn’t say on the outside of the package. Well the the shirt is somehow compressed into a crinkled rectangle. LOL I decided not to open it up fully because I want to show it to my husband when he gets up this morning. I hope the shirt is a small or a medium, but it feels kind of heavy like it might be a large or even bigger. Oh well, if it’s too big it will become T-shirt pj’s.

My husband also does work for Pay/perp0st on his website too. I wonder if he’ll get some swag as well? That’d be cool.

I had added up how much money that I’ve made with Pay/perp0st since I started with them in early October, and I also added how much my husband has made since he started and do you know how much we’ve made together in just a few months? Over $3,800! That would put us at number 4 on the top earners list if we weren’t two separate people! LOL

If you’ve been reading my site you know I’m not working due to my illness and that I’ve also got an $1100 medical test to pay for that I just had this week. So we can use that money.
