Translate Tricia’s Musings!

October 18, 2007 by Tricia

I don’t know if anyone noticed one of the new features that I’ve added to Tricia’s Musings and As the Garden Grows yet, but both sites are now using the Google Translate plugin.

I decided to add this feature because I know that both sites have quite a few readers who’s first language is not English. I, of course, don’t speak most of the languages that my posts can now easily be translated into, so I’m not sure how beneficial translating my articles will be in the long run.

It’s worth a try anyway.

I know that translators work best when the author uses proper syntax, grammar and spelling. I try. I know my grammar isn’t perfect, but I do make an effort.

The Google Translator plugin can translate a site or posts into the German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Chinese languages. I wish there were also a Nordic language feature.

As I’ve mentioned many times over the last few months this site will soon have a new look. It will happen soon!

None of my husband or I’s blogs currently use widgets. That’s about to change. I haven’t been using widgets because many of the codes that I use in my sidebars just didn’t work well in Widgets. I’ve known about a plugin called PHP-Exec for a while now, but it’s never seemed to work well for me.

I’ve recently discovered a similarly named WordPress Plugin called Exec-PHP and it works! Even better – it’s easier to use than the other plugin. You don’t have to wrap PHP code in another code. You just activate the plugin and tada you can use PHP code in your posts (in code mode) or in your widgets.

I stayed up quite late last night working on widgetizing my gardening blog on a test blog site. It was necessary to use the Exec-PHP plugin in order to use widgets on that site. Later this evening I’ll work on transferring the contents of my test widgets over to my gardening blog and it will officially be the first blog of ours that is fully widgetized.

I’m sure I’ll move quickly and use widgets for all of our blogs sidebars.

The great thing about using widgets on your wordpress site is that if you want to change your theme you can do so very easily as long as you pick a theme that is widget ready as your sidebar widgets should transfer over to the new theme quite nicely.

This theme is not widget ready at all. In fact the code used to make up the sidebars is very outdated coding indeed. It uses tables instead of unordered lists. Tables … that’s partly why this site takes a little longer to load than it should! So yes, a theme change is necessary.

So watch for the changes in our blogs and in the meantime if those of you who speak one of the languages that this site can now be translated in can give the translator a try I’d appreciate it. I’d love to know if the translations make sense! The translator buttons are located in the top left sidebar.

How many of you have dated someone you met online?

October 12, 2007 by Tricia

I was just thinking about two of my friends that I haven’t seen in a very long time. Funny that both of them now live on the other side of the country in Vancouver yet they don’t even know each other.

I was thinking about them in part because I haven’t seen either of them for quite a while and also because I was reading a story about the increase in online dating and how many people are having success with it and as it turns out both of my friends ended up meeting the men they eventually married through online dating sites or communities like Meet You Later. I’m not sure if that was the one, one of them used or not. Don’t quote me!

I think they are the only friends of mine that I know of who ended up marrying a person they met online, but I know several men and women who regularly meet others online and then in real life and begin dating.

I wonder … how many of you have met someone through the internet, not necessarily a dating service, and started dating or even married?

Again I need to find a non-ajax poll to use on this site. If anyone knows of a good one that doesn’t slow down site load I’d love to hear about it.

Marketing and promoting our sites!

September 23, 2007 by Tricia

I think I spent close to two hours today adding people to the blogrolls that I run and adding a few of my sites to blogrolls run by others! I also listed our sites on a few new directories that I discovered.

Busy busy! I’d say I spent most of this week working on advertising and promoting our sites. Hopefully the time I put into this pays off in the near future.

How did you spend your Saturday?

Who would have thought blogging would be such work?

September 20, 2007 by Tricia

Wow, this blogging thing has become a real job lately! Maintaining all of my sites and my husbands takes a good portion of time each day.

When I’m not creating new posts for each of my blogs I’m answering email and some of the comments left on the blogs. The rest of the time I’m either working on securing advertising or making the advertising that I’m using on the sites work better for me or I’m trying to promote the sites.

I used to have more time to promote the websites, but I think this is the area I’ve let fall behind the most as I’ve gotten busier and busier.

I consider promoting our sites to be anything from having fun visiting my friends and others blogs and leaving comments to finding a new Blogging Directory in which to list our sites. Oh yes, social networking sites like Mybloglog, Blogcatalog and Bumpzee are one way that I promote our sites.

How do you manage your sites? Do you just blog and leave the rest to chance or do you do some background work to try to get the word out about your blog?

Please don’t stumble my posts

September 6, 2007 by Tricia

Darn!

Someone stumbled one of my recent posts.

I’m going to end up getting too much traffic on my hosting account! Remember last Thursday all my feverishthoughts.com sites were down for 9 hour? I found out it was a traffic surge that caused the cpu resources to go to high on my account.

I’ve got to switch my account or at least some of my sites over to VPS hosting, but until I do please don’t stumble or digg my posts as the resultant traffic might overload my account.

I guess I should be happy that traffic is so high that I need to think about upgrading my hosting. However, I guess if I’m going to have a traffic surge that overloads my account I’d rather it be real hits and not empty traffic that might not really be interested in the post.

Also, if you get too many hits from a site like stumble and you use Google Adsense on your site you could end up having your Google account canceled due to inflated impressions.

I suspect it was an advertiser that stumbled my post in the hopes of advertising their product to more people. Unfortunately, if my sites go down as a result that post won’t be seen by many.

How do I un-stumble a post???
