Do you hate popups as much as I do?

January 29, 2008 by Tricia

I mostly use firefox these days when I’m working on my sites or visiting websites on the internet. I have the popup blocker turned on and I only allow a few sites to give me popups simply because the only way to get the sites to work is to allow popups.

However, lately I’ve found a number of sites that are some how able to bypass the browsers popup blocker controls. Several sites I visited yesterday ended up automatically giving me popup ads.

I hate that!

Seriously, if you’re site works in such a way that you occasionally need to send a visitor to another page while they are doing something on one page – for example registering for the site or for a contest and the reader is supposed to agree to the terms of service or contest rules – don’t make it a popup. Let the link take the visitor to another tab or window or at least give them a choice of whether the link should popup or take them to a new tab.

As for popup ads? Get rid of them! If you want ads for your site tastefully place them in your sidebar or fit them in your post. Honestly. I never ever click on popup ads and I will not ever click on a popup ad. Ever!

I need to get back on track and get to work!

January 17, 2008 by Tricia

I think it’s time to get my act together again.

Ever since we got Midnight, our Labrador Retriever puppy, I’ve slowed down on blogging and that has unfortunately resulted in a drastically reduced income! Our spending has gone up since we got her too since we had to pay for oh, 6 vet bills since she’s been sick since the day we got her, and we also had to get doggy supplies (training crate, toys, puppy training classes, more toys) and so on.

It also doesn’t help that I feel quite ill most of the time. My Crohn’s has been acting up for close to three years and in the last few months it seems to be worse than ever.

Time to suck it up and get back to work no matter what.

I had a shocking reality check last night. I finally got on my desktop computer.

I hadn’t used that computer since around the end of December and I was probably only on it about four times that month in total. Since we got the puppy at the end of November I’ve spent most of my computer time on my laptop. The laptop is on the living room coffee table and it’s not easy to work on when the puppy is out and demanding attention, hence the big decrease in blog posts across all my sites. My husbands sites have been affected too as he’s barely making blog posts either.

Last night I got on my desktop computer to access our bank accounts in order to pay all of our bills. Yes, one or two were a little overdue. I was shocked to discover that I only had a little over $100 in my account! Ahhh! Many of our expenses are taken out of my account automatically. I knew my account was probably getting low, but I didn’t think it would be that low!

Luckily I had quite a bit of money in my Paypal account so I quickly set about transferring some funds to my bank account. Too bad the money won’t get to my account until sometime early next week! Chris and I also have accounts in another bank that we use mostly for savings and our RSPs so I accessed those accounts (not the RSP’s) and transferred some money to my main bank account. Hopefully that money will make it to my account by Friday.

I paid our bills using Chris’ bank account instead of mine as I usually do.

Sigh of relief. The bills are paid and we still have some money that we can access over the next day or two until all the funds I transferred from Paypal and my other account arrives in my main bank account. We’re ok.

We won’t be ok though if I don’t start working on my sites again like I used to! A few months ago when things were going very well and I was working hard to make money through blogging and my other sites I was making pretty good money. Enough that I was transferring money from my Paypal account weekly. I knew I’d slowed down quite a bit when the gap between money transfers went from once a week to once every three or four weeks.

I’ve got to try to get back into my old work habit. It won’t be easy with the puppy wanting my attention during all her waking hours, but I’ll try!

In the past I’d start out each day working on my desktop computer. I find that I get more work done there than when I’m using the laptop. The laptop makes me lazy. I can lie on my side on the couch or prop the computer on my legs as I watch TV. Work slows down. A lot! Now with the puppy wanting to play ball or jumping in my lap to get me to pull on her squeaky toy working on the laptop is almost impossible too. Even checking email as it comes in takes forever.

Before she arrived in my life I’d work during the day on the desktop computer. My husband was at work and I’d could get my work done in peace. I’d write up posts to be saved as drafts or to be published right away throughout the day. I’d often still have some work to do in the evenings, but I could do it at a slower more relaxed pace on the laptop while my husband and I spent some time together. If I had a bad day due to my Crohn’s that was usually ok as I had posts stored up to use on my off days.

We have a training crate for our puppy. She has a nap or two in it during the day and sleeps in it at night. I think that in order for me to get more work done she’s going to have to spend a little more time in it each day. At least until she calms a little and is more willing to play with her toys on her own.

I guess having the puppy around demanding my attention is a bit like having a toddler in the home. How do those of you with young children or perhaps puppies as well cope with getting your computer work done at home?

I think what I’ll do is take care of the puppy early in the morning – feed her, walk her and have a short play time, then I’ll put her in her crate for a couple of hours and get to work on my desktop computer. She usually has her second meal of the day between noon and 1 pm then we go for a good walk and play in the house for a while. We’ll still do that, but now when she settles down in the late afternoon for a nap I’ll be sure to put her in her crate and get back on the desktop computer for some productive work time. When Chris is home in the evening he can play with her and I’ll keep working if I need to, then I’ll switch to the laptop to keep an eye on things as the evening wears on.

Maybe that will work.

I just need a little more structure in my day no matter how guilty I feel about ignoring the puppy for a couple hours here and there. Hey I’ve got to keep working if I want to keep a roof over our heads, the bills paid and have some extra cash so we can keep on having fun right?

Avot mV allows you to watch near real time video on your mobile device

December 21, 2007 by Tricia

Mobile phones that are capable of accessing web based video are becoming more common. I’d say one of the most well known mobile phones would be the iPhone and also the iPod Touch.

Unfortunately, just like in the old days when everyone connected to the internet using slow modems web based video delivered to cell phones can be slow to download and when playing while downloading the video could go through delays or be of poor quality.

I don’t have an iPhone but I do have a mobile phone with web capabilities and I’m excited about the Avot mV video delivery platform that’s been introduced by Avot Media.

Avot mV is apparently the first solution to give mobile users unlimited access to any web-based video. The platform, once installed on your mobile device, will enable you to quickly and easily search, personalize and play videos from all over the internet.

To download Avot mV directly to your mobile phone you can just point your mobile browser to the Avot mV – Product Site. If you are using your computer you can simply visit the Corporate Site to learn more about this innovative program. You’ll also be able to download a copy of Avot mV to your desktop. At that point you’ll need to hook up your mobile device to your computer in order to upload the program to your mobile device.

I’m certain that you’ll enjoy using Avot mV. The platform features intelligent search capabilities that will incorporate your personal preferences which will make searching for videos across the internet easier and faster.

I hate typing in urls or even much text on my cell phone. I bet you do too. One feature of Avot mV that I’m sure you’ll appreciate is that you can simply point and click on videos that you’re interested in instead of having to type in urls. This is of course most beneficial to iPhone users since the iPhone is a true “touch” phone.

Once you’ve found a video that you’d like to watch the Avot mV platform transfers the content to your mobile device in as little as a few seconds. This is much faster than earlier mobile solutions. Since the video is transferred to your mobile so quickly you’ll be able to play the video in near real time and as a result you should not experience grainy video quality, delays or jitter.

You can maximize the size and clarity of the video just like you can when viewing a video on your desktop computer screen.

If you’d like to download videos and then organize them into a playlist that you can watch when you are commuting to and from work or when you are taking a break you can do so with the Avot mV platform. In fact you can create an unlimited number of playlists. I know if I was still taking the subway to and from work each day this feature would definitely be of interested to me!

You can see a list of supported web enabled devices on the Corporate site. Mobile devices such as the Apple iPhone/iPod Touch are supported.

If you are interested in the Avot mV platform visit the website to learn more about it and you can also visit the Avot Media Official Blog to keep up with the Avot mV platform news.

Dial up users need to check out Wildblue Satellite Internet service

December 8, 2007 by Tricia

I know that a few of my regular readers are still using dial up service to connect to the internet. Most of the people that I know that are still using dial up modems are in rural areas where they cannot access DSL or cable internet service providers.

I feel sorry for them.

I remember those days when dial up was the only way to connect to the internet. When a 54 baud modem was considered fast! Of course those were the days when a 256 or 386 PC computer was also considered fast and they still had floppy disks that you had to use to run big software applications like Wordperfect.

OMG I’m aging myself here I think!

Well I’m very happy to let everyone know, especially those of you who are still using dial up, that Satellite Internet is finally here!

Mybluedish.com is making their satellite internet service, Wildblue, available to those of you who live in the continental United States. If you have a clear view of the southern sky you’ll be able to receive the service.

Wildblue is faster than other Satellite Internet service providers with download speeds of up to 1.5 mb which of course is 30 times faster than dial up! Isn’t that amazing? Are you dial up users getting excited yet?

Just like DSL and Cable internet the service is always on so you’ll be able to turn on your computer and be on the internet right away. The Satellite modem plugs into a wall outlet (just like my cable modem does). All you need to do after that is plug your computer into the Ethernet port that’s located on the back of the Satellite modem. Simple. Easy. Anyone can do this.

More good news. Wildblue is the least expensive Satellite Internet service in the USA. Prices start at $49.95 per month which is comparable to what I pay for my cable service here in Canada.

You’ll need to be able install a very small satellite dish to your home to use this service. The dish is small, apparently more like a small satellite TV dish rather than one of those huge dishes that you still sometimes see on peoples homes or office buildings.

Dial up users – Don’t you hate waiting for slow downloads? Does it sometimes take several minutes for a website to load? Wouldn’t it be nice to almost instantly load websites and receive downloads from now on? You’d also be able to watch video’s without any lag or delay.

If this sounds like a service you could use go check out the Wildblue Satellite Internet service at Mybluedish.com.

Ultra Hal – make your computer talk and understand commands

October 25, 2007 by Tricia

Did you hear the news? Ultra Hal, created by Zabaware, won the grand prize for “most human” computer of the year – this means that they’ve basically created the Smartest artificial intelligence software ever. The award was given out at the 17th annual Loebner Prize Competition for Artificial Intelligence.

Their software gives your computer a personality with the ability to speak and understand the English language. Of course this means that when talk to your computer it really can talk back!

If you’d like to try the Ultra Hal Assistant 6.1 software you can download a free 30 day trial at the Zabaware website.

Zabaware’s Ultra Hal software won the “most human” computer of the year in the 17th annual Loebner Prize Competition for Artificial Intelligence (AI). The contest was held in New York City hosted by philanthropist Hugh Loebner.

The Loebner Prize is an annual competition where software programs attempt to convince human judges that they are actually people. The format of the competition is called a Turing Test. In a Turing Test a judge talks with 2 “entities” simultaneously through a text-based instant messaging system. One entity is a human and the other is a computer. It is up to the judge to decide which is which by typing questions to both entities and receiving answers.

Zabaware is an Erie, Pennsylvania based company that specializes in artificial intelligence technology. The company’s mission “giving your computer the power of thought” once considered a futuristic pipe dream is becoming a 2007 reality.

It is one thing to talk to your computer it is quite another to have a conversation where you are exchanging information and the computer learns and utilizes the information in the future. Zabaware’s Ultra Hal technology and its associated brain are currently doing just that. The software can give your computer a personality using AI technology, speech recognition technology, and real-time animation. It can be used as an entertainment program, a companion, or an office assistant. It learns from conversations and evolves and improves the more it talks with a person. In addition to chat it can perform useful functions such as remembering and reminding of appointments, keeping an address book, dialing phone numbers, launching program, and more.

Zabaware’s Ultra Hal software runs on most standard Windows computers. The artificial intelligence software is available for download at www.zabaware.com as a free 30-day trial.
