Contest to design a PAYjr Visa Buxx Card

July 26, 2007 by Tricia

If you are creative and enjoy contests you might want to try your hand at the PAYjr Visa Buxx Teen Credit Card design competition. You could win some great prizes if your design wins the competition.

The contest is for a new prepaid credit card that teens are loving and parents are thrilled to use. Parents can load the card with the money that they’d normally pay their teen for chores around the house or with whatever amount of money they think is reasonable for their teen to have access to and then there teen can use the card wherever PAYjr Visa cards are accepted.

What’s great about this credit card is not only that it’s prepaid, it’s that teens can design their own card or choose from designs that have already been created. This of course is where the contest comes in. Do you think you can create a credit card design that teens will love using?

The design contest winner will be awarded with an Apple Laptop, the second place winner will get an Apple Video iPod and the third place winner will get an iPod Nano. I know that if I entered the contest I’d be pleased to win any of those prizes.

The winning designs will be used in the PAYjr Visa Credit card gallery where teens can choose to use them for their own credit card.

Just go to the page that I’ve linked to above and follow the instructions to enter the contest and upload your design. Once you’ve submitted your design you’ll be given code that you can place on your website or myspace page which will help you gain votes for the contest. The top three highest voted designs will win the contest.

Give it a try if you want to win any of those great prizes!

Virtual dolls at the Cartoon Doll Emporium

July 24, 2007 by Tricia

When I was a little girl I used to love playing with cut out dolls. I’m not even sure if that kind of toy is still around anymore.

The closest thing that I can come up with that is similar in nature would be sites like the Cartoon Doll Emporium where you can choose a doll type and then proceed to dress it up and accessorize with a selection of items ranging from hats, pants, skirts, dresses, tops, blouses, jackets, purses, shoes, glasses and all kinds of fun items.

The Cartoon Doll Emporium calls these dolls Virtual Dolls. Virtual because they are web based and Virtual because you can make them look any way your heart desires. Or … uhm … your child can make them look whatever way they’d like.

It’s for kids, but I know adults use sites such as this to create avatar images to use on their websites or on discussion forums too. I believe I might have made my own Tricia’s Musings avatar that you see in the header on the Cartoon Doll Emporium. I probably did since it’s supposed to be the most popular dress up website.

There are over 800 different types of dolls to choose from. There are girl, boy, celebrity, character, anime, Bratz, fashion, fantasy, makeover, international, historical, geeks, seasonals, babies, video game, political and even animal dolls. One of the doll types – webkinz even has virtual pets!

You know you’ve found a great site for kids when even as an adult you can have fun with it and spend some time creating interesting doll characters.

Be sure to visit when you have some time on your hands because I have a feeling you’ll be there for a while.

I might be changing my do follow policy slightly

July 18, 2007 by Tricia

As many people who visit this site and many of my other sites knows all of my blogs are do follow. I realize that some of you still might not know what that means. Well, it means that I started using plugins that would remove the nofollow tags from comments way back in October of 2006.

I became a “do follow” blogger in order to reward my regular visitors with a proper link back to their site.

You see, most blogging platforms have nofollow tags built in to the comment area so when you leave a comment on most blogs the nofollow tag that is placed in the link that you left when you signed the comment tells search engines like Google not to follow and index the link.

To heck with that I said. I’ve had a fairly loyal following of readers for quite a while now. Why shouldn’t I give them a link for their loyalty and for leaving fantastic comments that make me think, laugh or inform me of things I hadn’t thought of yet?

In October I started my following experience by using the comment plugger plugin which gave my commenters a link right under the post. Once this post has some comments you’ll see a link to the various people that have left a comment right below the post.

Then, in April, I added the do follow plugin to my site and started the Do Follow Blogroll so that we’d all know what other blogs were also do follow blogs.

I should have actually taken out the comment plugger plugin at that time because I’m actually giving two links every time someone comments! Oops! I forgot about the comment plugger. Perhaps by the time you read this post I’ll have removed that feature.

I don’t think I’ve ever really lacked for comments, but lately, as a result of the do follow blogroll being copied on a number of sites – in some instances in order of a sites page rank! – I’ve been getting all kinds of comments from other bloggers, business owners, business websites and so on who seem only to be leaving a very basic comment in order to get a back link.

So have a number of people on the do follow blogroll. One person told me this morning that someone left a comment on her site recently praising her for being a do follow blogger and then they proceeded to leave a long list of links!

Hello! Do follow blogs are not link directories!

Wait a minute ….

Why did I become a do follow blogger? To reward my regular loyal visitors. I can’t do that properly with the do follow plugin that I’m currently using because everyone gets a link that has had the nofollow tags removed. If people are using sites just to get links well … that doesn’t work does it!

Yeah … so maybe that’s why I’ve been feeling a little used and abused lately.

Hmmmm “I wonder what other do follow type plugins are out there?” I thought to myself.

So I did a search for do follow plugins and one of the first search results was Andy Beards Ultimate list of Nofollow and Dofollow plugins. I’d seen this list in the past of course, but at that time I couldn’t think of a reason why someone would want to use a do follow plugin that didn’t necessarily make all comment links follow.

Well after my experiences of the last few weeks having the same people leaving comments on nine of my husband and I’s blogs – many of which appeared to be pretty much the same comment each time, I’ve learned my lesson and I think I’m going to go back to rewarding only those who are loyal visitors and commenters.

I’m thinking of using the LinkyLove plugin which allows you to set it up so that someone must comment a certain amount of times before their links will follow. Seems a safer bet to me.

The default amount of comments someone would have to leave is set to 10. I may or may not leave it at that if I use this plugin. I’m not going to say of course because those that want to play the system will then know what magic number they must reach.

If the do follow bloggers on my blogroll begin using this it will be a little harder for me to verify if their site follows when I’m checking their sites to add to the blogroll but in an effort to prevent abuse I think I’d better allow my members to use whichever plugin they wish to use.

If I begin using the LinkyLove plugin this will of course be the change to my do follow policy that I referred to in the title of this post.

The final straw the broke the camels back and prompted this upcoming change is due to the fact that someone has now created a search engine to help people find do follow blogs. I can see this being abused and making it even easier to abuse those who only want to be nice to their loyal readers.

The reason that I haven’t begun to use this plugin already is because I’m still having CPU resource problems with my web host. I need to make sure that this plugin isn’t constantly calling the databases and using up a lot of valuable resources on my server.

Does anyone know if this is a light of heavy CPU resource usage plugin?

Does anyone already use the LinkyLove plugin? If you do have you had any problems? Is your site still fairly fast or has it slowed?

Start sending real letters again

July 12, 2007 by Tricia

theesnail.gif Isn’t it nice when you receive cards at Christmas time, your birthday or special holidays? Some people even take the time to write a family letter during the holiday season, updating the rest of the family about all the major events that have occurred over the last year.

What’s unfortunate about this is that the occasions that I’ve listed above are about the only times that Chris or I ever receive cards or letters anymore.

My parents were winter Texans and while I missed them while they were away I always appreciated and looked forward to the weekly letters my mother would write. Sure, they had a set routine so each letter had a similar theme, but there was always some little story that made each letter unique.

I miss those letters.

I’m assuming that you don’t get as many letters as you used to either. Do you miss getting letters?

Well, if you want to give someone the feeling of getting a real letter again, but like the convenience of using your computer you could use the free service provided by http://www.esnailer.com. Just type out a letter, fill out the name and address of the person you are sending the letter to and then submit your finished letter to Esnailer.com.

Esnailer will print out your letter, place it in an envelope, put a stamp on it and mail it off to your friend or relative for you. All free of charge.

Sure, you might be saying to yourself “well I could do that myself”, but honestly, when was the last time that you did?

At least with Esnailer half the work is done by them and it’s free. Have you taken a look at the price of stamps these days? Believe me, this is a bargain!

Give it a try.

Topicscape 3D helps you get organized

June 25, 2007 by Tricia

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by all the information that you’ve stored on your computer and have desperately wanted to find a way to get organized so that you can find the files you need within minutes you might be interested in a unique software program called TopicScape Information Organizer in 3D!

That’s right. It’s a 3D information organizer. You can get an idea of what your organized information might look like by having a look at this chefs recipe information organizer software. If you were to organize your own recipes that you’ve stored on your computer according to ingredients it might look something like the example that I linked to above.

It’s simply a new way to look at information. If you are a visual person you’ll love this software.

To use the program simply drag and drop files and information on to topic areas. Connecting the various topics in your own way will individualize your 3D Topicscape organizer in a way that suits your way of thinking.

If this sounds interesting to you, you can visit the site via any of the links above or read this in depth article 3d mindmapping software article to get even more information about this unique software program.

There’s a TopicScape lite and a Topicscape pro addition for download on the site. You can also down load TopicScape skins that will help you individualize the look and feel of your TopicScape installation.

Give it a try, perhaps this will be the perfect organization system for you.
