I think I need a new laptop

February 4, 2011 by Tricia

I’m seriously thinking about getting a new laptop computer. I really don’t want to spend the money, but my computer is running very slow and it’s hard drive is filling up. I’m working on moving some of the files off of the computer to make more room and I’m hoping it will run faster, but still … the hard drive will fill up again. If I don’t buy a new laptop now I’ll be getting one soon.

It probably doesn’t help that I have everything on my computer from all the photographs I take, to the new videos that I’m taking each day, all of our music, my ebooks and other books and tons of blogging related stuff.

So … if I were to seriously start looking at new Laptops what do you think I should be looking for? The main thing that I use my laptop for is to work on my websites and blogs. I’m on my laptop 16 to 18 hours a day – writing, writing, and editing. When I’m not writing I’m uploading photos or video and then editing them. So I need a computer that can handle graphics, and it’s picture quality must have fairly true to life color quality.

I’m still also toying with the idea of getting a Mac. I’d love a Mac but I’ve never had one or even used one. Odd since I do some much graphics work I know.

Any suggestions?

Thinking of going back to school?

May 29, 2009 by Tricia

In recession times it’s not uncommon for those who’ve been laid off or those who’s jobs might be on shaky ground to think about returning to school. I’m sure there are many people who have recently considered returning to school either to study further in their chosen field or to make a complete career change.

In the early 90’s, during that recession, I did a complete career change and so did my husband (boyfriend at the time). We were both jewelers and the jewelery trade wasn’t doing well, so we took turns going back to school. I became a nurse and my husband became a computer technician.

If you are considering going back to school you might be interested in taking a look at the online Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership course at Lewis University.

There are five concentrations in this course which will equip you with leadership and progressive management techniques, they are organizational management, not- for -profit management, Public administration, training and development, and higher education – student services.

They also offer an online Masters of Science in Information Security. The course is highly dynamic and it provides students with the managerial and technological tools to work with government agencies and businesses in order to safeguard them from threats to their data and computer systems.

I actually like the idea of online courses. They offer flexibility in that it’s often easier to fit an online course of study into your life. Lewis University also offers competitive tuition and has generous financial aid programs.

I know that if I were thinking of making a career change and possibly going back to school I’d probably look into an online course first. Have you ever thought of furthering your career by going back to school?

I wish I could afford a new Laptop

May 21, 2009 by Tricia

I’m getting so frustrated with my Laptop lately. It seems to be getting slower and slower – especially when I run my weekly antivirus scan. Man that takes forever!

I’ve been looking at new Laptops over the last month or so each time we go to a store that sells them. I thought our 60 gig harddrive was big, but it looks like most new laptops have 300 gig harddrives now! Oh and more memory too!

I certainly can’t afford a new Laptop right now. We just had the brakes fixed on the car and bought two new front tires, plus two weeks ago our brake line had to be replaced too. So with all the money we put into the car this month, plus regular bills there’s no way we can shell out more for a new Laptop no matter how much we’d love to have a second laptop in the house.

This weekend I think we might try to buy some more laptop memory. This notebook has 1 gig of memory but if we can double that I’m sure it will help the computers performance when memory hogs like the antivirus scan.

BTW my computer is completely virus free. I’ve done all the checks and as I said scan it regularly. So it’s not a virus that’s slowing it down. It’s a too full harddrive and software that hogs memory.

My computer is too full

January 28, 2009 by Tricia

This morning when I started up my computer and opened up my email and browser programs everything started moving really slow. It took Firefox about 10 minutes just to open up and my email program waited about five minutes before it slowly started checking for mail.

At first I thought that maybe my internet connection was really slow. After all it’s been snowing here since late last night (and continues to do so now) and it made sens that the storm might be affecting my connection to some degree.

I don’t think it was my internet connection though … I think it’s my laptop. It’s so full! Even though I move files and digital photographs that I’ve uploaded from my camera off to my other computer every now and then, the hard drive is just too full … either that or I don’t have enough computer memory although at 1 GB of RAM I think that should be enough.

I think sometime in the next few days I’m going to have to go through all the files on the computer and perhaps delete old ones that I don’t need, plus programs that I don’t use too. I’ve got plugins for WordPress stored in folder, themes and so on … now that WP can update plugins so easily I don’t need to have copies of all the free plugins I use stored on my computer.

I’m certain it’s not a virus slowing down my computer. I use Norton Antivirus and regularly scan for viruses. My computer is just well … stuffed!

Have you ever run into this kind of problem? I just don’t know what to do with all my files – ie digital pictures, documents and so on. Maybe what I really need is a bigger hard drive!

My laptop is getting slower and slower

October 23, 2008 by Tricia

I’m starting to get really frustrated when I’m using my laptop. It’s so slow!

When I first start up the laptop it takes forever for the browser and my email program to start up. Once they are loaded it’s not too bad, but the computer is a lot slower than my desktop computer and it’s slower than it used to be even a few months ago.

I think I’m going to have to go over everything and start deleting things I don’t use and maybe move documents and photos over to my other computer or to my portable hard drive. I haven’t defragged the computer for a while either, maybe defragging will help.

For those of you that have both a laptop and desktop computer do you find that your desktop computer is faster?

Update- I forgot to mention that yes I use an anti-virus program (Norton Anti-Virus) and it runs a complete scan of my system once a week. I just ran it last night after posting this, so it’s unlikely that this problem is being caused by a virus.
